Electrocatalytic hydrogen production from seawater holds enormous promise for clean energy generation. Nevertheless, the direct electrolysis of seawater encounters significant challenges due to poor anodic stability caused by detrimental chlorine chemistry. Herein, we present our recent discovery that the incorporation of Ce into NiFe layered double hydroxide nanosheet array on Ni foam (Ce-NiFe LDH/NF) emerges as a robust electrocatalyst for seawater oxidation. During the seawater oxidation process, CeO 2 is generated, effectively repelling Cl − and inhibiting the formation of ClO − , resulting in a notable enhancement in the oxidation activity and stability of alkaline seawater. The prepared Ce-NiFe LDH/NF requires only overpotential of 390 mV to achieve the current density of 1 A cm −2 , while maintaining long-term stability for 500 h, outperforming the performance of NiFe LDH/NF (430 mV, 150 h) by a significant margin. This study highlights the effectiveness of a Ce-doping strategy in augmenting the activity and stability of materials based on NiFe LDH in seawater electrolysis for oxygen evolution.

In the calcium looping CO 2 capture process, using CO in the flue gas to reduce NO at a high molar ratio of CO to NO (e.g., above 10:1) can achieve efficient removal of NO. However, the lots of unreacted CO causes secondary pollution. In this study, a novel Cu/Ce co-modified CaO was proposed for cyclic CO 2 capture and the catalytic NO reduction at a low CO:NO molar ratio (e.g., 2:1). The experimental findings indicate that Cu/Ce modification improves the performance of CaO in both catalytic NO reduction and carbonation. The Cu/Ce co-modified CaO contained the optimal Cu/Ce/Ca molar ratio of 1:5:100 possesses both NO removal and CO conversion efficiencies of above 99 %, along with CO 2 removal efficiency exceeding 88%. Microscopic analysis determines that the electron transfer between Cu and Ce facilitates the conversion of lattice oxygen into surface oxygen, mitigating the competition between CO 2 and CO for surface oxygen. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations demonstrate that CO/NO/CO 2 exhibits non-competitive adsorption behavior on Cu/Ce co-modified CaO. Consequently, Cu/Ce-modified CaO possesses superior catalysis for efficient NO reduction by CO at low CO:NO molar ratio in calcium looping process.

Metal halide perovskites have triggered numerous studies in the application of optoelectronic devices. In this work, we incorporated Ce3+ ions into the MAPbBr3 perovskite to extend the photoluminescence spectrum from the green light region to red light region, which can be attributed to the dopant-induced self-trapped exciton (STE) emission. Furthermore, the non-equivalent substitution of Ce3+ ions for the Pb2+ ions can result in extra electrons, thus can change the type of dominant carriers and improve the carrier mobility. The MAPbBr3:Ce based photodetector exhibited a broadband photodetection capability over a wide range from 340 nm to 650 nm. In addition, after doping Ce3+ ions, the maximum device responsivity, detectivity and external quantum efficiency were efficiently improved. These results provide a new approach to highly-efficient and broadband-detecting photoconductive photodetectors.

Herein, a nanocomposite of Cu,Ce-containing phosphotungstates (Cu,Ce-PTs) with outstanding laccase-like activity was fabricated via a one-pot microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. Notably, it was discovered that both Fe 3+ and Cr 6+ could significantly enhance the electron transfer rates of Ce 3+ and Ce 4+ , along with generous Cu 2+ with high catalytic activity, thereby promoting the laccase-like activity of Cu,Ce-PTs. The proposed system can be used for the detection of Fe 3+ and Cr 6+ in a range of 0.667–333.33 μg/mL and 0.033–33.33 μg/mL with a low detection limit of 0.135 μg/mL and 0.0288 μg/mL, respectively. The proposed assay exhibits excellent reusability and selectivity and can be used in traditional Chinese medicine samples analysis.

Synthesizing stable MOF materials with good adsorption capability in a relatively green way is well worth investigating. In this work, a stable Ce-UiO-66-NH2 MOF was constructed from Ce(IV) salts and a bifunctional ligand, 2-amino terephthalic acid, in a mixture of water and ethanol at room temperature. The MOF solid was fully characterized and its adsorption properties for methylene blue were investigated in detail. Ce-UiO-66-NH2 showed excellent removal ability of MB over a wide pH range, the adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the isothermal adsorption data fit well with a Langmuir model with a maximum capacity of 427 mg g−1. Moreover, a spontaneous heat adsorption process was concluded from thermodynamic study, and this MOF sorbent can be reused for several cycles with its structural stability maintained. A possible mechanism for MB adsorption was also proposed.

A novel electrochemical immunosensor for the sensitive detection of monensin (MON) was developed. The sensor platform utilized anti-MON monoclonal antibodies and a nanocomposite (Ce-MOF@AgAuNPs), composed of cerium-based metal-organic frameworks decorated with silver-gold nanoparticles. The physicochemical properties of the Ce-MOF@AgAuNPs nanocomposite were investigated using transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, UV–Vis spectrophotometry, and fourier transform infrared techniques. The stepwise fabrication process and electrochemical performance of the immunosensor were investigated through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The sensor exhibited excellent analytical performance for MON detection, with a wide linear response range from 0.05 to 250 ng mL −1 and a low LOD of 0.008 ng mL −1 . Additionally, the immunosensor exhibited high accuracy, with recovery rates ranging from 97.4% to 103.2% in chicken liver and 96.0%–104.7% in milk. This developed immunosensor shows great potential for food safety applications, demonstrating high specificity, stability, and reproducibility in the detection of MON.

High temperature material with low infrared emissivity in 3–5 μm waveband plays a crucial role in the infrared stealth capability of hot-end aircraft components. In this study, 3 mol% Ce doped ZnO ceramic powders were annealed at various temperatures to reduce their infrared emissivity. The effects of the annealing temperature on the lattice structure, microscopic morphology, and elemental valence variation in the ZnO ceramic powders were systematically investigated. Additionally, a conductivity–dielectric–lattice vibration synergy theory was proposed to provide insights about the changes in the infrared emissivity of the ZnO ceramic powders. The infrared emissivity of the sample powder gradually decreased to its lowest value (0.092 at 500 °C) as the annealing temperature increased to 1100 °C, exhibiting a U-shaped curve from room temperature to 800 °C. Furthermore, the obtained powder was used as a filler to prepare a low infrared emissivity coating, which exhibited an infrared emissivity of 0.213 in 3–5 μm waveband at 500 °C. An infrared thermographic analysis of the coating indicated that it significantly suppressed infrared radiation at 500 °C, demonstrating an excellent high temperature infrared stealth performance.

Phosphates within tumors function as key biomolecules, playing a significant role in sustaining the viability of tumors. To disturb the homeostasis of cancer cells, regulating phosphate within the organism proves to be an effective strategy. Herein, we report single-atom Ce-doped Pt hydrides (Ce/Pt–H) with high phosphatase-like activity for phosphate hydrolysis. The resultant Ce/Pt–H exhibits a 26.90- and 6.25-fold increase in phosphatase-like activity in comparison to Ce/Pt and Pt–H, respectively. Mechanism investigations elucidate that the Ce Lewis acid site facilitates the coordination with phosphate groups, while the surface hydrides enhance the electron density of Pt for promoting catalytic ability in H2O cleavage and subsequent nucleophilic attack of hydroxyl groups. Finally, by leveraging its phosphatase-like activity, Ce/Pt–H can effectively regulate intracellular phosphates to disrupt redox homeostasis and amplify oxidative stress within cancer cells, ultimately leading to tumor apoptosis. This work provides fresh insights into noble-metal-based phosphatase mimics for inducing tumor apoptosis.

The direct synthesis of methyl methacrylate from isobutene is of great importance in the chemical industry. The direct oxidation of isobutylene to methacrylic acid is one of the key steps, but the selectivity of methacrylic acid is low in the products of one-step oxidation of isobutylene. The efficient one-step oxidation of isobutylene to methacrylic acid was achieved by preparing a Mo-V-P-Ce/KCsWPAV two-component composite catalyst combining asymmetric lattice oxygen with appropriate acidic heteropolyacid catalysts. The catalyst was characterized using XRD, FT-IR, BET, SEM, and others to analyze its structural properties, dimensional characteristics, and more. Results indicated that the composite catalyst accelerated the crystallization rate, with Ce enhancing the oxidation of the active molybdenum species and promoting oxygen activation to form lattice oxygen, thereby improving the oxidation of isobutylene. The heteropoly acids increased the percentage of medium strong acidic sites, enhancing the selectivity of methacrylic acid. Under optimized conditions, with an atmosphere to isobutylene molar feed ratio of ≥25:1 and a temperature of 400 °C, the Mo-V-P-Ce/KCsWPAV catalyst achieved a remarkable 91 % conversion of isobutylene with a 70 % selectivity towards methacrylic acid. The catalyst shows promise for practical applications in the one-step oxidation of isobutylene to produce methacrylic acid, providing a suitable solution to the problem of isobutylene overcapacity.

Despite SO 2 being recognized as a catalyst poisoning substance, a trace amount can enhance the acidity of the NH 3 -SCR (selective catalytic reduction) catalyst, which facilitates NH 3 adsorption and accelerates the reaction rate according to the Eley-Rideal mechanism. In this study, monoatomically dispersed Ce atoms were doped into the MoTiO x lattice to regulate the quantity and distribution of sulfate. This regulation was achieved by leveraging the stronger affinity of SO 2 to Ce, thus maximizing the acidifying effect of SO 2 to boost the NH 3 -SCR performance of the catalyst. The catalyst demonstrated the ability to maintain over 80 % NO x conversion for at least 144 hours in the presence of high concentration SO 2 (250 ppm). A detailed examination of the surface dynamics after SO 2 introduction revealed that NH 4 (SO 4 ) 2 , formed on the surface, converted to NH 4 HSO 4 . The decomposition of NH 4 HSO 4 extracted lattice oxygen from the catalyst, leading to an increase in oxygen vacancies on the catalyst surface as the duration of SO 2 exposure increased. The surface-adsorbed oxygen, brought about by these oxygen vacancies, was readily activated, which promoted the dehydrogenation process of NH 3 and the progression of NH 3 -SCR. Further, based on the discovery of the unique phenomenon and mechanism of NH 4 HSO 4 decomposition that generates oxygen vacancies, gases containing poisonous SO 2 were utilized for the pretreatment of the catalyst to optimize its surface and enhance its sulfur resistance (fighting poison with poison). The results demonstrated that the pretreated catalyst rapidly achieved optimal NO x conversion and maintained catalytic stability for over 240 h even in the presence of 250 ppm SO 2 without any decrease in activity. This research innovatively leveraged the poisonous SO 2 to optimize the catalyst's surface, thereby achieving higher catalytic performance and sulfur resistance, which offers valuable insights into the design of novel sulfur-resistant catalysts.

We demonstrate a method for the detection of Ziram in water by using the adsorption properties of UiO-66(Ce) metal-organic framework (MOF) combined with the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate of precious metal nanoparticles. The traditional UiO-66 is based on Zr as the metal center. After replacing the Zr metal center with Ce, the synthesized UiO-66(Ce) has short aging, high efficiency, low energy consumption, and energy saving. Furthermore, by adding P123, UiO-66 is modified to have a structure similar to the durian shell spine, which can provide more composite sites for metal nanoparticles. Thus, more SERS hot spots are generated. The combination of AuNPs with UiO-66(Ce) has been confirmed by XRD, XPS, and other characterization and analysis techniques. The Raman probe molecule R6G was used as an evaluation tool to evaluate the performance of this SERS substrate. The results showed that the relative standard deviation (RSD) of the substrate was as low as 8.96 % at a concentration of 10 –6 M of the R6G solution, and the substrate demonstrated high stability. Finally, the substrate was applied for the detection of ziram in lake water, achieving a detection concentration of 10 –8 M, an enhancement factor of 2.57 × 10 5 , and a detection limit as low as 5.21 × 10 –9 M, demonstrating excellent sensitivity and enabling efficient trace pollutant detection in complex water environments.

The development of metal-organic framework (MOF)-based composite systems for visible-light-driven organic photocatalysis under mild conditions, offering an effective approach for sustainable and efficient chemical synthesis. Herein, we synthesized Z-scheme photocatalysts CdS/Ce-UiO-66 by combining the representative photocatalyst CdS and Ce-UiO-66, demonstrating excellent photocatalytic performance for imines synthesis in air. The CdS/Ce-UiO-66 composites demonstrated significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity for the oxidative coupling of amines under visible-light irradiation in air, outperforming their individual components. Remarkably, the composite achieved conversion of benzylamine with exclusive formation of imines as the sole product and efficiency up to 84 % at least four cycles. Furthermore, the photocatalytic system exhibited excellent substrate adaptability, demonstrating broad applicability across various amine substrates. The enhanced photocatalytic performance of CdS/Ce-UiO-66 composites can be primarily attributed to the uniform dispersion of CdS nanoparticles and the unique heterostructure system that effectively modulates the band gap, extends the light absorption range, and promotes charge carrier separation. This study not only presents an efficient photocatalytic strategy for the direct synthesis of imines through oxidative coupling of amines but also demonstrates the significant potential of photoactive CdS/MOF hybrid systems in sustainable chemical synthesis.
