The construction and development of enzyme-free sensors made of non-precious metals that are extremely sensitive to glucose is of great importance for treatment of diabetes. A room temperature reaction method was used to grow ZIF-67@GO nanocubes on nickel foam substrates, followed by a hydrothermal method to construct Co(OH) 2 nanomaterials . From this NF/ZIF-67@GO/Co(OH) 2 enzyme-free glucose sensor with a unique structure was designed. The results and the charge transfer process of glucose's catalytic oxidation detection were systematically investigated in the composite material. The experimental results show that this sensor exhibits good electrochemical activity for glucose detection. It has a linear range of 0.1 μM-8.546 mM, a very high sensitivity of 2412.7 μA mM −1 cm −2 , and its low detection limit is 0.934 M (signal-to-noise ratio of 3). These results indicate that the sensor is capable of accurately and sensitively detecting glucose concentration and has great potential for use in practical applications. The synthesis method is simple, fast, low-cost and easy to apply to electrochemical electrodes. Besides, the material has reproducibility, stability and good selectivity .

The application of NiCo-LDHs in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is rarely reported because it is usually served as an effective electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) owing to the essential chemical and electric structure features. It still is a challenge to realize the effective HER over NiCo-LDHs unless modified with noble metals . In this work, the noble-metal-free core–shell Co(OH) 2 @P-NiCo-LDH hybrid with dodecahedral hierarchical structure is prepared by the sacrificial template method along with subsequent phosphating process, which is available for the electrocatalytic HER. The fabricated Co(Ni) δ+ -P δ- bonding states on the surface of outer shell NiCo-LDH not only provide the abundant active centers but also reduce interfacial charge transfer resistance to enhance the HER activity. Meanwhile, the unique core–shell dodecahedral structure effectively avoids the agglomeration and restacking of NiCo-LDH nanosheets to improve the electrochemical stability. This work exploits a novel noble-metal-free modification strategy to expand the application of NiCo-LDH in HER.

Capacitive deionization (CDI) is considered one of the most promising desalination technologies for obtaining fresh water from saline water. In this work, we synthesized a hollow core–shell Co-MOF@Fe/Co-LDH (Co-Fe-LDH) material by developing a strategy to simultaneously grow Co/Fe-LDH on the surface of a Co-MOF precursor in situ. Owing to the increase in the specific surface area of the hollow structure and the Faradaic process of a layered double hydroxide (LDH), the Co-Fe-LDH material exhibits high electrical double layer (EDL) capacitance and pseudocapacitance, which significantly improves the salt adsorption of the material during CDI (34.2 mg/g in a 600 mg/L NaCl solution at 1.2 V). The adsorption for NaCl in this work is approximately 2.5 times the maximum salt adsorption capacity (SAC) of LDH materials applied in nonmembrane CDI (NMCDI). This work may provide a promising model for the application of hollow LDH materials that exhibit pseudocapacitance in CDI.

As nitrate contamination causes serious environmental problems, it is necessary to develop stable and efficient electrocatalysts for efficient electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (ENRR). Here, a nonprecious Co3O4/carbon felt (CF) electrode with a 3D structure was prepared by integrating electrodeposition with calcination methods. This 3D structured Co3O4/CF electrode exhibits a high-rate constant of 1.18 × 10–4 s–1 cm–2 for the ENRR, surpassing other Co3O4 electrodes in previous literature. Moreover, it also has an excellent stability with a decrease of 6.4% after 10 cycles. Density functional theory calculations, electron spin resonance analysis, and cyclic voltammetry were performed to study the mechanism of the ENRR on the Co3O4/CF electrode, proving that atomic H* (indirect pathway) plays a prominent role in NO3– reduction and clarifying the synergistic effect of Co(III) and Co(II) in the Co(II)–Co(III)–Co(II) redox cycle for the ENRR: Co(III) prefers the adsorption of NO3– and Co(II) favors the production of H*. Based on this synergy, a relatively large amounts of Co(II) on the surface of the Co3O4/CF electrode (1.3 Co(II)/Co(III) ratio) was maintained by controlling the temperature of calcination to 200 °C with a lower energy barrier of H* formation of 0.46 eV than other ratios, which is beneficial for forming H* and enhancing the performance of the ENRR. Thus, this study suggests that building 3D structure and optimizing Co(II)/Co(III) ratio are important for designing efficient Co3O4 electrocatalyst for ENRR.

Control of dimensional stability is crucial for using electrospun membranes in biomedical and tissue engineering applications. In this study, the contraction of electrospun membranes of poly( l -lactide-co-glycolide) (PLLGA) after stretch was investigated. Then, by adding PLLGA-b-polyethylene glycol (PLLGA-PEG), the contraction of the membranes was controlled. In addition, the mechanical properties of the membranes were investigated. On the basis of the strain–stress behavior of the membranes, an elongation of 50 % was used to investigate the orientation degrees of the membrane fibers. On the basis of the morphology of the stretched membranes, the contraction was found to depend on the orientation degree of fibers after stretch. A linear relationship between the contraction and degree of orientation after stretch was confirmed. Two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (2D FFT) analysis of the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the membranes was used to quantify the orientation degree. It was surmised that the different orientation degrees were responsible for the different morphologies and thermal behaviors of the membranes.

The incorporation of nanomaterials generated from Prussian blue (PB) derivatives has emerged as a promising strategy to significantly improve the properties of energetic materials. In this study, we comprehensively investigated the influence of nanomaterials derived from PB on the thermal decomposition characteristics of energetic materials. To achieve this goal, we prepared nanomaterials using coprecipitation and heat treatment methods with PB derivatives as catalysts. Advanced techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis for specific surface area and pore size, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed to thoroughly characterize these nanomaterials. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to assess the thermal behavior of nitrocellulose (NC), and the relevant kinetic parameters were determined through thermal decomposition kinetics calculations and analysis. This work revealed the influence of catalysts on the NC decomposition process and provided comprehensive insights into the effect of integrating nanomaterials derived from PB derivatives on the thermal decomposition performance of NC. The results of this work demonstrated the possibility of using nanomaterials generated from PB derivatives as effective catalysts to enhance the thermal decomposition characteristics of NC, offering interesting opportunities for their application in the field of high-energy materials.

Oral co-delivery of nutraceuticals at colon sites has been considered the preferable strategy for targeted ulcerative colitis (UC) relief. This study aimed to develop oral colon-targeting nanoparticles (NPs) co-loaded with egg white-derived peptides (EWDP) and hydrophobic quercetin (Que) using Zein/chondroitin sulfate (CS) templates. The fabricated NPs showed excellent pH-sensitive size tunability (488.0–128.6 nm) and Que co-encapsulation efficiency (99.3%, pH 7.0), owing to the EWDP co-assembly with templates driven by three main noncovalent interactions (hydrogen bonding, electrostatic and hydrophobic interaction). Notably, the less active EWDP could act as the promising co-assembly enhancers and excipient analogs to sufficiently exert the preferable oral synergism (e.g., antioxidant and anti-inflammatory) of the two nutraceuticals, mainly through enhancing its aqueous solubility, controlled release, and transport stability of Que (>20%) under gastrointestinal conditions. Moreover, EWDP could jointly co-assembly with active targeting biopolymers (e.g., CS) to induce the superior colon-targeted accumulation of NPs, thereby dramatically repairing intestinal barriers (tight junction and mucus layer) and restoring gut microbiota balance (e.g., enriching Lachnospiraceae and eliminating Bacteroidota ). Overall, this study provides a facile and efficient orally colon-targeted nano-strategy for multiple nutraceuticals in precise UC mitigation. Meanwhile, the co-assembly profiles of EWDP could offer an insightful and widely applicable insight into the ingenious formulation of biopolymer nanoplatforms (active targeting or passive targeting) in food processing and healthcare areas.

Optimizing the electronic structure of Ru by introducing N dopants or O vacancies (V O ) into RuO 2 is expected to be a promising strategy to stimulate the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. However, it is a challenge to develop a fast and low-energy method to simultaneously achieve the construction of N dopants and V O . This work was the first to optimize the quenching technique for achieving the co-introduction of V O and N in Co-RuO 2 nanosheets (N,Co-RuO 2 -V O ). Related characterizations confirmed that V O and N dopants synergistically optimized the electronic configuration of Ru and the reaction path of alkaline HER. As expected, the mass activity of N,Co-RuO 2 -V O (2208.63 mA m g R u - 1 ) was 8.05-fold that of Pt/C at 100 mV for alkaline HER. Surprisingly, N,Co-RuO 2 -V O required only 148.6 mV to achieve an industrial-grade current density of 1 A cm −2 , which was much lower than the commercial Pt/C catalyst (312 mV). Overall, this work provides an energy-efficient new strategy for the development of Ru-based catalysts with ampere-level currents.

Atomically dispersed metal catalysts coordinated with nitrogen coordination and anchored to carbon substrates (M-N-C) have become highly effective alternatives to platinum-group catalysts for oxygen electrocatalysis. However, the catalytic efficacy of M-N-C systems remains constrained by the suboptimal performance associated with the symmetric charge distribution around the active metal centers. The synergistic co-design of asymmetric metal single-atom catalytic centers with heteroatom doping significantly enhances the bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic activity and durability, advancing the capabilities of next-generation flexible zinc-air batteries. Herein, we developed a pyrolysis-secondary coordination strategy to generate a bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst, characterized by single Co atoms integrated within an asymmetrical Co-N5S1 moiety, along with nanocluster complexes embedded in N,P,S-codoped carbon frameworks, labeled CoSA+NC/NPSC. In the CoSA+NC/NPSC catalyst, the Co-N5S1 active sites exhibit an optimized electronic configuration, achieved through the synergistic coordination of heteroatom doping and nanocluster integration. Theoretically, this configuration significantly lowers the energy barriers and adjusts the d-band center, ensuring a more balanced binding strength between active sites and the oxygen-containing intermediates and contributing to the promoted bifunctional oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reaction efficiency. The experimentally analytical results reveal that the CoSA+NC/NPSC demonstrates an impressive oxygen evolution reaction activity (Ej=10 = 1.58 V) and a narrow bifunctional potential gap (ΔE = 0.75 V), remarkably superior to the counterparts with symmetric Co-S coordination or phosphorus-free doping. When assembled as an air electrode, the CoSA+NC/NPSC-based flexible zinc-air battery exhibits ultralong charge-discharge life (> 105 h) and impressive initial round-trip efficiency of 72.42% even at 0 °C.

In order to explore the functional application of coal and realize the high-value application of low-quality coal. Therefore, low-cost coal as a carbon source into environmental protection, high-value coal-based carbon quantum dots (CQDs). This study employed high-sulfur coal as the carbon source and urea as the nitrogen source to successfully synthesize nitrogen and sulfur co-doped coal-based carbon quantum dots (NSCQDs) via a one-pot hydrothermal method. These NSCQDs were utilized as co-catalysts to assist the photocatalytic water splitting and hydrogen evolution of metal phosphides (Co-P and Fe-P). The obtained catalysts were subjected to systematic structural and property analyses, and the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity and stability were investigated, along with an analysis of the photocatalytic mechanism. The results revealed that the novel composite photocatalyst exhibited high hydrogen evolution activity, with a maximum hydrogen evolution rate of 28.41 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 at pH 10. Under a wavelength of 520 nm, the apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) reached 4.93%, and the solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency reached 0.46%. The semiconductor type (n-type) of the monophasic catalyst was determined through Mott-Schottky analysis, and the band structure was analyzed accordingly. The conduction and valence band positions for Co-P were determined to be -0.44 eV and 1.31 eV, respectively, while those for Fe-P were found to be -0.51 eV and 1.17 eV, respectively. Based on these results, it is inferred that an S-type heterojunction is formed between Co-P and Fe-P, and NSCQDs enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution as an auxiliary catalyst. This research advances the synthesis of coal-based carbon quantum dots and provides the key information for the photocatalytic decomposition of water and hydrogen evolution using coal-based CQDs.

Constructing a Co─N C─V covalent bridge as an electron highway. • Achieving ultrafast charge separation and 5 times higher hydrogen evolution. • Integrating Schottky junction and molecular wire for directed charge flow. We introduce an “electron highway” concept to overcome stochastic charge loss in heterojunctions, realized by a Co─N C─V covalent bridge at the Ni‑Co PBA/V 2 C MXene interface. This molecular‑scale wiring, combined with a Schottky contact, creates a directed and atomically precise charge transfer pathway from the photoactive PBA to the conductive MXene. The resultant photocatalyst shows a remarkable H₂ production of 13697 μmol h −1 g −1 under visible light, a 5‑fold increase, enabled by picosecond‑scale electron injection and minimized recombination, as evidenced by in‑situ XPS and TRPL. The robust interfacial bond ensures sustained activity over 25 h cycling. This work provides a generalizable, molecular‑scale strategy for designing high‑efficiency interfaces for photocatalysis and beyond. A key challenge for direct methanol fuel cells is the sluggish reaction kinetics, poor anti-CO poisoning ability, and insufficient Pt utilization of platinum-based catalysts during methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Herein, we report a facile approach for PtCuNi electrocatalysts with adjustable inner and surface configurations. By judiciously controlling the nucleation/growth kinetics, PtCuNi core–shell alloy nanoparticles (PtCuNi-CS NPs) fortified with a Cu-rich core and a Pt-rich shell are obtained. Especially, PtCuNi-CS NPs show the highest mass activity and specific activity toward MOR, 5.7 and 5.1 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the PtCuNi-CS NPs with a suitable d-band center possess excellent electro-oxidation activity. Additionally, the doping of Cu and Ni atoms endows the PtCuNi-CS NPs with enhanced OH* adsorption. This work provides an effective design strategy to develop Pt-based trimetallic electrocatalysts as efficient anode materials for fuel cell applications.
