CO2-utilized synthetic marbles with enhanced radiative cooling

Xingang Xu,Lu Yang,Zhilin Xia,Shuai Nie,Zhichao Liu,Fazhou Wang,Shuguang Hu,Yuanzheng Yue

The urgent challenges posed by global warming and CO 2 greenhouse effects have spurred extensive efforts in building material development for utilizing sequestered CO 2 and mitigating building energy consumption. Inspired by the natural cooling effect of ancient white marble architectures, here we developed an engineered marble material (EMM) for highly efficient radiative cooling. EMM was synthesized by carbonation of γ-Ca 2 SiO 4 through CO 2 . This process sequestered 511 kg CO 2 per ton of γ-Ca 2 SiO 4 . EMM possessed a hierarchical porous nano structure that offered a high solar reflectivity of 95 % and a strong thermal emissivity of 97 %. The EMM coating doped with alumina and silica gel exhibited a superior cooling effect, manifested by a maximum subambient temperature drop of 8.8 ℃. The radiative cooling effect resulted in a potential annual reduction in CO 2 emission up to 54.8 kg/m 2 . The radiative cooling effect of EMM was enhanced through chemical tuning that broadened the wavelength range of its thermal emission. EMM possesses coating-ability, castability, and multifunctionalities, presenting significant potential for large-scale implementation. This work opened a new way for the application of the CO 2 -utilized materials for radiative cooling in building engineering.

CO2-Switchable microemulsion based on a pseudogemini surfactant

Dongfang Liu,Yuxin Suo,Jiang Tan,Hongsheng Lu

At present, more and more researchers around the world are paying attention to stimuli-responsive surfactants. In this paper, we have reported a microemulsion prepared from the tertiary amine TMPDA (N,N,N′,N′-tetramethyl-1,3-propanediamine) and the anionic surfactant SDS (sodium dodecyl sulphate), which has good carbon dioxide response characteristics. The molar ratio of TMPDA to SDS is 1 : 2. By introducing CO2 into the microemulsion that consists of SDS, TMPDA, n-hexane, n-butanol and water, the tertiary amine TMPDA molecules can be protonated to form quaternary ammonium species. The protonated tertiary amine TMPDA can be assembled with SDS by electrostatic interactions to form a pseudogemini surfactant (SDS–TMPDA–SDS). The pseudogemini surfactant can dissolve in the aqueous phase which makes the microemulsion break down eventually. By bubbling N2 after CO2 into the same system at 50 °C for 3 hours, the pseudogemini surfactant SDS–TMPDA–SDS disintegrates into SDS and TMPDA, respectively. At the same time, the microemulsion also recovers its initial state. Such a reversible transition could be repeated for several cycles from monophase to complete phase separation.

Optofluidic membrane microreactor for photocatalytic reduction of CO2

Xiao Cheng,Rong Chen,Xun Zhu,Qiang Liao,Xuefeng He,Shuzhe Li,Lin Li

Photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 is a promising technology to capture CO 2 and convert it into solar fuels simultaneously. However, current photoreactors usually face the problems of low specific surface area, non-uniform light distribution and poor photon transfer. To address these issues, a novel optofluidic membrane microreactor with high surface-area-to-volume ratio, enhanced photon and mass transport and uniform light distribution was proposed in this work by combining optofluidics with the membrane reactor technology for the photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 with liquid water. A TiO 2 /carbon paper composite membrane was prepared as the photocatalytic membrane via coating TiO 2 onto the carbon paper followed by hydrophobic treatment by poly-tetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) for the separation of the gas/liquid phases. The performance of the proposed optofluidic membrane microreactor was evaluated by measuring the methanol yield. The effects of the liquid water flow rate , light intensity and catalyst loading on the methanol yield were also studied. It was shown that a maximum methanol yield of 111.0 μmole/g-cat·h was achieved at a flow rate of 25 μL/min and under the light intensity of 8 mW/cm 2 , which is among the top in comparison to the reported data. Results obtained fully demonstrate the feasibility and superiority of the proposed optofluidic membrane microreactor for the photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 .

Design of CuInS2 hollow nanostructures toward CO2 electroreduction

He Chaohua,Chen Sijia,Long Ran,Song Li,Xiong Yujie

The sharp rise of CO 2 in the atmosphere has become a potential threat to global climate, which results from the massive utilization of fossil fuel since the industry revolution. CO 2 electroreduction provides us a new possibility of utilizing CO 2 as a carbon feedstock for fuel and commercial chemicals generation. In this article, a new method is developed for synthesizing CuInS2 hollow nanostructures through the Kirkendall effect. The CuInS 2 hollow nanostructures exhibit excellent catalytic activity for electrochemical reduction of CO 2 with particular high selectivity, achieving high faradaic efficiency for HCOOH of 72.8% at −0.7 V. To elucidate the mechanisms, operando electrochemical Raman spectroscopy is employed to examine the CO2 reduction process. This work provides new insights into the design of hollow nanostructures toward electrocatalytic CO2 conversion and offers us an effective and reliable way for real-time investigation of electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction processes.

Fe2O3 aided NiFe2O4 enhanced CO2 hydrogenation to CO

Jiaojiao Xie,Xinyu Zhi,Bowen Lu,Dikun Hong,Liqi Zhang

NiFe 2 O 4 has been widely applied in CO 2 hydrogenation for its excellent redox properties. However, NiFe 2 O 4 samples usually exhibited complex performance, rapid inactivation followed by slow activation, and poor hydrogenation selectivity. In this work, the complex behavior of NiFe 2 O 4 in CO 2 hydrogenation was studied, and the influence of surface oxide species(NiO and Fe 2 O 3 ) on its catalytic performance was probed on NiFe 2 O 4 -ww through magnetic water washing. NiFe 2 O 4 -ww was observed to predominantly produce CO with nearly 100% selectivity at lower temperatures and demonstrated a higher CO 2 conversion rate of 71.90% at 700 °C. However, under high-temperature reducing conditions, NiFe 2 O 4 -ww underwent rapid reduction to form Fe Ni alloy, which induced sintering and carbon deposition, thereby leading to a significant decline in catalytic activity. Surface NiO species on NiFe 2 O 4 enhanced CO 2 hydrogenation at lower temperatures but reduced the selectivity towards CO. Surface Fe 2 O 3 species enhanced the catalytic resistance to reduction, thereby improving catalyst stability by inhibiting the accumulation of carbon deposition. The effect of residual oxides on the NiFe 2 O 4 surface may give insight into understanding the deactivation behavior of Fe Ni alloy in CO 2 hydrogenation.

Surface-functionalized palladium catalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction

Rong Xia,Sheng Zhang,Xinbin Ma,Feng Jiao

Rational design and synthesis of efficient catalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction is a critical step towards practical CO2 electrolyzer systems. In this work, we report a strategy to tune the catalytic property of a metallic Pd catalyst by coating its surface with a polydiallyldimethyl ammonium (PDDA) polymer layer. The resulting PDDA-functionalized Pd/C catalysts exhibit an enhanced CO faradaic efficiency of ∼93% together with a current density of 300 mA cm−2 at −0.65 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode in comparison to non-functionalized and commercial Pd/C catalysts. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis reveals that the improvement can be attributed to the electron transfer from the quaternary ammonium groups of PDDA to Pd nanoparticles, weakening the CO binding energy on Pd. The weak CO adsorption on Pd was further confirmed by the CO temperature programmed desorption measurement and operando attenuated total reflection-Fourier-transform infrared analysis. Therefore, the incorporation of electron-donating groups could be an effective strategy to decrease the CO binding energy of a metallic catalyst for a high CO selectivity in CO2 electroreduction.

Amine-impregnated porous nanofiber membranes for CO2 capture

Ghazala Zainab,Aijaz Ahmed Babar,Nousheen Iqbal,Xianfeng Wang,Jianyong Yu,Bin Ding

Global warming is a worldwide issue, mainly caused by excessive emission of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), thus, demands the development of robust and flexible sorbents with consider CO 2 capturing capacity. Herein, we report an easy and facile two-step fabrication of hierarchically structured and highly porous polystyrene (PS)/polyurethane (PU) electrospun nanofiber membrane impregnated with various amines for post-combustion CO 2 capture. Synthesized porous nanofiber membranes have highly flexible and strong mechanical characteristics . The comparative analysis of porous membranes functionalized with three functional amines shows that low molecular weight polyethyleneimine (PEI L ) impregnated porous nanofiber membranes offer relatively higher CO 2 adsorption (1.64 mmol/g) at 40 °C. In addition, optimized samples exhibit excellent regenerability, (≥ 90% of their original value) even after 19 adsorption-desorption cycles showing a stable and durable CO 2 capture performance. This work paves the way for developing electrospun nanofiber membranes capable of efficient CO 2 adsorption.

Atmospheric Pressure Ammonia Synthesis via CO2-Coupled Hydrogenation

Feng Kai,Qian Shuairen,Liu Xiaozhi,Shen Yang,Li Zhengwen,Chen Yuxin,Tian Jiaming,He Le,Zhang Xiaohong,Cheng Yi,Su Dong,Yan Binhang

The Haber–Bosch ammonia synthesis is a cornerstone of global agriculture and the chemical industry, yet it is fundamentally constrained by intrinsic scaling relations, necessitating energy-intensive conditions associated with a significant carbon footprint. Herein, we report a surface redox-mediated chemical looping strategy that utilizes the CO 2 hydrogenation reaction as a chemical trigger to drive ammonia synthesis at atmospheric pressure over a cobalt–molybdenum bimetallic nitride (Co 3 Mo 3 N) nitrogen carrier. Mechanistic investigations reveal that CO 2 induces a dynamic surface oxidation that weakens the intrinsic Mo–N bonds and facilitates the hydrogenation and release of lattice nitrogen as NH 3 . The cycle is closed by a subsequent nitridation step that removes surface oxygen and regenerates the nitride lattice. This redox-mediated mechanism enables an unprecedented NH 3 peak concentration of ∼2.3% and a release rate of 12.4 mmol·g cat –1 ·h –1 at 500 ° C under atmospheric pressure, circumventing the thermodynamic limitations that historically hinder low-pressure ammonia synthesis. Our findings demonstrate how dynamic surface engineering can decouple kinetic limitations from thermodynamic constraints, offering a novel paradigm for sustainable nitrogen fixation coupled with carbon utilization.

Polyamine biosynthesis-driven CO2 capture for sustainable applications

Chouqiang Li,Yunying Zhao,Guohui Li,Yu Deng

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is a major greenhouse gas, with significant emissions from fossil fuel combustion and biological activities. CO₂ emissions from biological processes are particularly dispersed and variable, making capture and carbon utilization challenging. In this study, by coupling the engineered biosynthesis of polyamine with self-driven in situ CO₂ capture, we successfully achieved efficient CO₂ fixation. In particular, an acid-resistant cadaverine-producing lysine decarboxylase (CadA) was transformed using surface engineering to yield the effective alkali-resistant mutant CadA-M2, which exhibited the lowest K m and highest k cat /K m in the range of pH 7.0 to 10.0. Then 297.0 g/L of cadaverine was achieved in a 5 L single-batch bioreactor, the highest reported titer to date, while 85% of released CO₂ was converted to bicarbonate and utilized to synthesize C 3 compound malonic acid, yielding diamines and dicarboxylic acids of the two key nylon precursors. This integrated approach seamlessly combined cadaverine production with efficient CO₂ capture and conversion, providing a groundbreaking pathway for utilizing CO₂ from biological processes in sustainable chemical manufacturing and advanced carbon management technologies.

CO2 adsorption performance of CuBTC/graphene aerogel composites

Ren Wen,Wei Zhenzhen,Xia Xiaoxiao,Hong Zhiwei,Li Song

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been recognized as promising adsorbents for carbon capture due to their ultrahigh surface areas and tunable properties. However, a majority of MOFs have strict requirements for preparation and high mass transfer resistance that limits the gas separation time. In order to improve the applicability of MOFs to practical applications, herein, we reported an experimental approach to prepare structured CuBTC/graphene aerogel (GA) composites using ionic liquid (IL) additives (CuBTC/GA-IL) at room temperature for CO 2 capture. The material was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), specific surface area analysis, and CO 2 adsorption tests. It was demonstrated that CuBTC/GA-IL exhibited the higher CO 2 uptake than CuBTC/GA prepared without IL additives. Besides, the breakthrough experiments have shown that CuBTC/GA-IL exhibited the lower mass transfer resistance compared with CuBTC-IL and good cyclability. The effective approach of fabricating CuBTC into GA using IL additives to improve CO 2 adsorption in this study may be extensively applied for other MOF-based composites. Graphical abstract

Nickel Single Atom Density-Dependent CO2 Efficient Electroreduction

Fengwei Zhang,Han Zhang,Zhenhe Jia,Shuai Chen,Siming Li,Jijie Li,Wen-Yan Zan,Qiang Wang,Yawei Li

The transition metal–nitrogen–carbon (M─N─C) with MNx sites has shown great potential in CO 2 electroreduction (CO 2 RR) for producing high value-added C 1 products. However, a comprehensive and profound understanding of the intrinsic relationship between the density of metal single atoms and the CO 2 RR performance is still lacking. Herein, a series of Ni single-atom catalysts is deliberately designed and prepared, anchored on layered N-doped graphene-like carbon (x Ni 1 @NG-900, where x represents the Ni loading, 900 refers to the temperature). By modulating the precursor, the density of Ni single atoms ( D Ni ) can be finely tuned from 0.01 to 1.19 atoms nm −2 . The CO 2 RR results demonstrate that the CO faradaic efficiency (FE CO ) predominantly increases from 13.4% to 96.2% as the D Ni increased from 0 to 0.068 atoms nm −2 . Then the FE CO showed a slow increase from 96.2% to 98.2% at −0.82 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) when D Ni increased from 0.068 to 1.19 atoms nm −2 . The theoretical calculations are in good agreement with experimental results, indicating a trade-off relationship between D Ni and CO 2 RR performance. These findings reveal the crucial role of the density of Ni single atoms in determining the CO 2 RR performance of M─N─C catalysts.

Efficient electrochemical CO2 reduction via CuAg doped CeO2

Mei Luo,Xiangmin Fu,Shuo Geng,Ziwei Li,Min Li

CO 2 electrocatalysis reduction (CO 2 RR) is considered to be one of the most efficient methods to achieve carbon neutralization and realize renewable energy conversion. Unfortunately, at present, CO 2 electrocatalysts confront the challenges of high overpotential, low selectivity, and poor stability. Ag based electrocatalysts are considered to be the most promising catalysts for CO production via CO 2 RR on a large scale, due to their relatively higher catalytic performance and more abundant reserves compared with other noble metals. Whereas, they still suffer from high cost. In this paper, we design bimetallic CuAg/CeO 2 -6 catalysts by the simple impregnation method for CO 2 RR, exhibiting the highest FE CO of 84% at –1.1 V vs. RHE compared with other bimetallic catalysts with different Cu/Ag ratio and monometal catalysts. XPS results demonstrate the electron delocalization effect not only between Cu and Ag bimetals but also among CeO 2 support. This effect results in the electronic structure change and the formation of the highest concentration of oxygen vacancies, promoting the CO 2 adsorption and activation as well as facilitating the formation of COOH* intermediates as evidenced by the in situ ATR-SEIRAS measurements. Additionally, the highest active surface for CO 2 RR and the smallest charge resistance of CuAg/CeO 2 -6 also contributes to its good CO 2 RR performance. This work sheds light on the design of other efficient CO 2 RR catalysts through electronic structure tuning by bimetallic strategy.
