Insights into the mechanisms of friction and wear reduction for surface-modified implants in bovine serum protein solution

Xinmeng Wu,Tao Li,Yi Ding,Xinyue Liu,Haiwei Han,Lihua Yu,Junhua Xu,Bin Zuo

In this paper, a series of NbN-Cu composite coatings were prepared using non-equilibrium magnetron sputtering. The composition, microstructure, mechanical properties, chemical stability, and tribological performance of the NbN-Cu coatings in bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution were systematically investigated using EDS, XRD, TEM, nanoindentation, a friction tester, and Raman spectroscopy. The results show that the NbN-Cu composite coatings consist of fcc-NbN, hcp-NbN, and fcc-Cu phases. As the Cu content increases, both the hardness and elastic modulus first increase and then decrease. At a Cu content of 0.89 at.%, the NbN-Cu composite coatings exhibit the highest hardness and elastic modulus, reaching 24.5 GPa and 312.6 GPa, respectively. Additionally, at the same Cu content, the NbN-Cu composite coatings demonstrate the best chemical stability, with the lowest ion release and the highest corrosion resistance, reflected by a corrosion current of 8.2 × 10 −7 A/cm 2 and a corrosion potential of −0.15 V. During friction in bovine serum protein (BSA) solution, the friction coefficient initially decreases and then stabilizes, with a minimum value of 0.155. The wear rate also first decreases and then increases, reaching a minimum of 3.75 × 10 −8 mm 3 N −1 mm −1 at a Cu content of 0.89 at.%. The tribological mechanisms of the NbN-Cu/BSA system were explored from the perspectives of lubrication state, adsorption behavior, and tribochemical products. The findings indicate that: (1) the NbN-Cu/BSA system operates under mixed lubrication conditions. (2) the introduction of Cu facilitates the formation of a robust physical and chemical adsorption layer on the surface of the NbN-Cu composite coatings, effectively separating the contact surfaces. (3) under the friction-induced catalytic action of Cu within the coatings, BSA molecules degrade, forming high molecular weight hydrocarbons with lubricating effect, with the catalytic effect becoming more pronounced as the Cu content increases.

Influence of Initial Cu/(Zn+Sn) Concentration Ratio in Cu–Zn–Sn–S Composites on Their Microstructures, Adsorption and Visible-Light-Sensitive Photocatalytic Activities

Yao Shujuan,Li Qiancheng,Kong Ningning,Li Chao,Wei Mingming,Song Ruru,Ren Xiaozhen,Pu Xipeng,Li Wenzhi

We presented facile synthesis of Cu3–x Zn x SnS4 composites (CZTSs, 0 ≤ x ≤ 3) with variety morphologies via simple one-pot hydrothermal process without hazardous chemicals, simply by varying initial precursor Cu/(Zn + Sn) concentration ratio. The influence of initial Cu/(Zn+Sn) concentration ratio on the microstructures and properties of composites was investigated. The morphological, structural, and optical properties of the samples were characterized by field-emission scanning and transmission electron microscopes, X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption–desorption, and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was studied using visible light irradiation of rhodamine B. Benefiting from the initial precursor Cu/(Zn+Sn) concentration, the as-prepared 3D hierarchical carnation-flowerlike CZTSs with high initial zinc concentration exhibit superior adsorption capability and much higher photocatalytic activity than that with low initial zinc concentration. The possible degradation mechanism of RhB was proposed.

Inducing the stable Cu0-OV-Cu+ active center at the interface of Cu/Zn catalysts via doped Cr to achieve high yields of methanol in CO2 hydrogenation

Xue Ye,Yangzhou Xu,Peipei Zhang,Dongwang Zhu,Zhicheng Chen,Yudong Xia,Fulin Yang,Xinhua Gao,Jie Li

CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol is one of the most promising pathways for emission reduction. Unlike traditional synthesis gas (CO + H 2 ) to methanol, a major challenge is that the activation of inert CO 2 at high temperature will induce the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction to generate CO, thereby reducing the methanol yield. In this research, a novel catalyst Cu 7 Zn 3 Cr 0.3 was synthesized by the carbon microsphere-assisted sol-gel method, which remarkably achieved a maximum methanol space-time yield of 345.1 g kg cat −1 h −1 under mild conditions (200 °C, 3.0 MPa, and 21600 mL g cat −1 h −1 ). Characterizations combined with theoretical simulations show that Cr doping can affect the crystal structure of ZnO, resulting in the formation of more oxygen vacancies (O V s), and induce Cu to form a stable Cu 0 -O V -Cu + active center at the interface. This active structure efficiently enhances the adsorption and activation of CO 2 , while changing the reaction path to inhibit the production of CO. The results indicate that there is a clear linear relationship between the Cu + and O V s concentration and methanol yield, which could provide experimental references for the development of high-performance catalysts for CO 2 methanol production.

Crystal structures, proton conductivities and luminescence of two organic-inorganic hybrid materials based on Keggin-type clusters and Cu(II)/Cu(I)-bis(hydroxymethyl)-2,2′-bipyridine complexes

Yan Zhao,Xianying Duan,Guangguang Zhang,Meilin Wei

Two proton-conductive and luminescent organic-inorganic hybrid materials, {[Cu(II)(bhmbpy)(H2O)(Cl)0.5(CH3CN)]2[PW(VI)10W(V)2O39]}·4H2O(1) and {H2[Cu(I)(bhmbpy)2(Cl)Cu(I)(bhmbpy)2][PW12O40]}·7H2O (2) (where bhmbpy is bis(hydroxymethyl)-2,2′-bipyridine), were synthesized at room temperature. The two products were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray single-crystal diffraction, X-ray powder diffraction, elemental and thermogravimetric analyses. The proton conductivities and luminescence of 1 and 2 were studied by using alternating-current impedance spectroscopy and luminescence spectroscopy, respectively. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that 1 includes a decorated polyanion chain {[Cu(II)(bhmbpy)(H2O)(Cl)0.5(CH3CN)]2[PW(VI)10W(V)2O39]}n and forms a three-dimensional network structure depending on short Cl…Cl contacts and hydrogen-bonding interactions. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that 2 includes a butterfly-like bi-nuclear copper cluster unit with a Cl-bridge, [Cu(I)(bhmbpy)2(Cl)Cu(I)(bhmbpy)2]+, and forms a three-dimensional network structure depending on hydrogen-bonding interactions. [PW12O40]3– anions fill in the network based on hydrogen-bonding and electrostatic interactions. In them, the bhmbpy acts as a bidentate nitrogen donor ligand in the chelating fashion to coordinate with the Cu(II) center in 1 and the Cu(I) center in 2. The bhmbpy in 2 successfully constrains the Cu(I) within a rigid environment in a tetragonal-pyramidal geometry. The two compounds exhibit good proton conductivity (10−4 S·cm−1) at 100 °C in the relative humidity range 35–98%. Their luminescence behaviors in the solid state at room temperature have also been investigated. Upon excitation at 384 nm, 1 exhibits three emission peaks centered at 439, 507 and 566 nm. When excited at 364 nm, 2 displays three emission peaks centered at 443, 501 and 553 nm.

Cu anchored on manganese residue through mechanical activation to prepare a Fe-Cu@SiO2/starch-derived carbon composites with highly stable and active visible light photocatalytic performance

Xiunan Cai,Qingwen Huang,Zongxian Hong,Yanjuan Zhang,Huayu Hu,Zuqiang Huang,Jing Liang,Yuben Qin

To harmlessly treat and effectively utilize manganese residue (MR), a novel MR-based catalyst, mechanical activation (MA)-pretreated MR-derived Fe-Cu@SiO 2 /starch-derived carbon (MAMR-Fe-Cu@SiO 2 /SC) composite, was prepared through a facial method by reduction roasting of MA-pretreated precursors. The prepared catalysts were systematically characterized to explore the formation and catalytic activities. The results showed that the formation of CuFeO 2 anchored on the MR could be ascribed to the close contact and mutual diffusion between solid components caused by MA, and the higher specific surface area, strong interaction of Fe-Cu and more accessible reactive sites of MAMR-Fe-Cu@SiO 2 /SC contributed to the greater catalytic activity in photo-Fenton system for tetracycline (TC) degradation. The MAMR-Fe-Cu@SiO 2 /SC catalyst showed excellent degradation efficiency at pH range of 2.5–9.5, and about 100% TC removal in 40 min and 85.6% TOC removal in 120 min could be obtained. The MAMR-Fe-Cu@SiO 2 /SC exhibited the highest apparent reaction rate constant of 0.066 min –1 , being about 4.0, 2.8, and 2.2 times that for the catalyst of Cu/SC, MAMR-Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /SC and MR-Fe-Cu@SiO 2 /SC, respectively. This enhancement could be attributed to that anchored Cu could accelerate the charge transfer, and short the reaction pathway between photo and Fenton reaction. XPS results showed that the presence of Fe 2+ -Fe 3+ , Mn 2+ -Mn 3+ and Cu + -Cu 2+ cycles were responsible for the radical generation on the surface of the catalyst. This environmentally-friendly method for the preparation of composite catalysts may provide new insights for harmless fixed treatment and valorization of MR and large-scale production of catalyst.

Cu/C composite electrode for efficient reduction of nitrate in wastewater

Pengchong Wen,Jiawang Xu,Luxin Liang,Zheng Ge

Nitrate pollution in aquatic environments, primarily caused by the excessive use of nitrogen fertilizers in agriculture and the unregulated discharge of nitrogen-containing compounds from industrial activities, has become a global environmental challenge. Electrochemical technologies offer a promising solution due to their controllability, environmental compatibility, and avoidance of secondary pollution. In this study, a Cu/C composite electrode was fabricated, and the effects of various preparation parameters on its electrochemical properties and nitrate reduction performance were systematically investigated. The optimized Cu/C electrode, supported on a carbon paper substrate, exhibited superior performance with a nitrate removal efficiency of 59.15 % in simulated wastewater and 86.74 % in real wastewater. Mechanistic analysis indicates that nitrate is first reduced to intermediate nitrogen species (NO₂⁻, NHₓ) on Cu active sites and subsequently converted into NH₄⁺ or N₂, while Cl⁻ plays a dual role by enhancing interfacial ion transport and generating ClO⁻ at the Pt anode to further oxidize NH₄⁺ to N₂. Compared with previously reported Cu/C systems, this study highlights the synergistic regulation of the carbon substrate and Cl⁻, which significantly improves both selectivity and stability. These findings demonstrate that Cu/C electrodes provide an efficient, stable, and environmentally friendly electrochemical strategy for treating nitrate-contaminated wastewater, highlighting strong potential for practical applications.

Efficient Recovery of Cu from Wasted CPU Sockets by Slurry Electrolysis

Wenjing Chen,Manning Li,Jiancheng Tang

In order to maximize the reuse of used electronic component resources, while reducing environmental pollution, Cu metal was recycled from wasted CPU sockets by the reformative slurry electrolysis method. However, the influences on the regulation of the Cu recovery rate and purity from waste CPU slots, by slurry electrolysis, has not been systematically elucidated in previous studies. In this work, the effects of H2SO4concentration, slurry density, NH4Cl concentration, current density, and reaction time, on the recovery rate and purity of Cu in slurry electrolysis, were researched by systematic experimental methods. The results showed that the recycled metal elements were mainly present as powders from the cathode, rather than in the electrolyte. Moreover, the metallic elements in the cathode powder consisted of mostly Cu and small amounts of Sn and Ni. The recovery rate and purity of Cu were up to 96.19% and 93.72%, respectively, with the optimum conditions being: an H2SO4concentration of 2 mol/L, slurry density of 30 g/L, NH4Cl concentration of 90 g/L, current density of 80 mA/cm2, and reaction time of 7 h. Compared with previous studies, the Cu recovered in this experiment was present in the cathode powder, which was more convenient for the subsequent processing. Meanwhile, the recovery rate of Cu was effectively improved. This is an important guideline for the subsequent application of slurry electrolysis for Cu recovery. Keywords:wasted CPU socket;slurry electrolysis;recovery rate of Cu;purity of Cu;current density;slurry density

Cu-MOF derivative-modified porous biochar composites for enhanced adsorption desulfurization

Xiaomei Qin,Chengchao Liu,Xiaoyun Qin,Jianbo Zhao,Huishi Guo,Yanghai Gui,Jingfei Xiao,Zhen Zhang

In this study, activated biochar (ABC) sourced from solid biowaste was prepared using wheat straw as the carbon source. The ABC was then used as a carrier for the in-situ growth of Cu-MOF-74, which was subsequently pyrolyzed at high temperatures to prepare Cu-MOF derivative-modified porous biochar composites Cu/ABC-T (T = 700–1000 °C) with a uniform distribution of Cu species on the biochar surface. The effect of pyrolysis temperature on the as-prepared Cu/ABC was investigated. The experimental results showed that Cu/ABC-900 exhibited the optimal adsorption performance for DBT, confirming that the uniform distribution of Cu on the biomass carbon surface after high-temperature pyrolysis effectively enhanced the desulfurization performance. Specifically, the as-prepared Cu/ABC-900 achieved an adsorption efficiency of nearly 90 % for 1000 ppm DBT, with an adsorption equilibrium time of only 5 min and a maximum adsorption capacity of 19.70 mg S·g −1 . The adsorption process of DBT by Cu/ABC followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption model. The adsorption performance of Cu/ABC-900 for different sulfides followed the order: DBT > BT > TH. Furthermore, the adsorption efficiency of Cu/ABC-900 for DBT did not exhibit any significant decline after five regeneration cycles, indicating the excellent regenerability and great potential for practical applications. This work provides a new approach to utilizing carbon-based adsorbents for deep desulfurization, which is beneficial for cost-effective fuel cleaning.

Fabrication of ultrafine W-Cu composite powders and its sintering behavior

Jun-Kai Liu,Kai-Fei Wang,Kuo-Chih Chou,Guo-Hua Zhang

Ultrafine W-Cu composite powders with various copper (Cu) contents (5, 20 and 40 wt.%) have been fabricated by a method consisting of a carbothermic pre-reduction step and a subsequent hydrogen reduction step. After roasting the mixture of ammonium tungstate ((NH 4 ) 10 [H 2 W 12 O 42 ]· x H 2 O) and copper nitrate trihydrate (Cu(NO 3 ) 2 ·3H 2 O), the mixture of CuWO 4 and CuO (or WO 3 ) was obtained. Subsequently, this mixture was pre-reduced by insufficient carbon black to generate the products containing W, Cu and a small amount of WO 2 which was further reduced to W in the following hydrogen reduction process. Thus, the ultrafine W-Cu composite powders were successfully produced. After sintering the green compacts made of these powders at 1100 ℃, 1150 ℃, 1200 ℃ and 1250 ℃, respectively, the microstructure, relative densities, electric conductivity and thermal conductivity of the sintered alloys were measured. The experimental results indicated that the higher the sintering temperature is, the better the performance of alloys will be.

Decomplexation of Cu(II)/Ni(II)-EDTA by ozone-oxidation process

Xu Suyun,Yan Ning,Cui Minghao,Liu Hongbo

In this study, ozone-oxidation was used to treat synthetic chemical plating solution containing Cu(II)/Ni(II)-EDTA solution to realize the purpose of decomplexation. The effects of solution pH, initial concentration of Cu(II)/Ni(II)-EDTA, the molar ratio of EDTA to Cu(II)/Ni(II), and the coexistence of Cu(II)/Ni(II) on their removal efficiencies were investigated. The degradation of EDTA-Cu(II) and EDTA-Ni(II) were mainly attributed to OH oxidation, and the removal rates of Cu(II)/Ni(II) depend on the complete decomplexation. The removal rates of Cu(II) and Ni(II) was affected by the pH of solution, and the optimal pH was found to be 7–9; nevertheless, their removal rates can still be up to 90% even in acidic pHs of 3~5. When the molar ratio of EDTA to Cu(II)/Ni(II) increased from 1:1 to 3:1, the kinetics of metal ion removal rate declined from 0.0788 and 0.1139 min -1 to 0.0250 and 0.0271 min -1 . The synergistic effect was found in the Cu(II)/Ni(II) blended system due to the higher catalytic capability and the lower complexation affinity toward EDTA for Ni(II). In summary, ozone oxidation can be considered as an effective technology to realize the complete decomplexation of Cu(II)/Ni(II)-EDTA that contained in chemical plating industry wastewater. Synergistic Cu/CeO2/Halloysite Nanotube Catalysts for Temperature-Programmable Biomass Valorization

Shiyu Huang,Yinze Yang,Yan Du,Pengxiao Wei,Yafei Zhao,Huishan Shang,Dan Wang,Dongyang Li,Bing Zhang

A bifunctional Cu/CeO2/halloysite catalyst was rationally constructed via strong electrostatic adsorption to enable switchable conversion of furfural into either furfuryl alcohol or isopropyl furfuryl ether. Highly dispersed Cu nanoparticles are anchored on CeO2 nanoislands supported by acid-etched halloysite nanotubes, creating a unique “support–adjuvant–active site” synergy. This architecture facilitates H2 activation and tandem hydrogenation–etherification, allowing precise temperature-controlled pathway selection. Under mild conditions, furfural hydrogenation to furfuryl alcohol proceeds via a low-energy barrier (0.9 eV) with a stable intermediate, whereas etherification requires overcoming a significant barrier (1.6 eV), becoming favorable only at elevated temperatures. In situ FTIR, kinetic studies, and DFT calculations reveal the mechanistic origin of this selectivity. The catalyst displays high activity, tunable selectivity, and robust recyclability, providing a versatile strategy for controlling reaction pathways in the valorization of biomass-derived platform molecules.
