Amyloid fibrillation of α-synuclein is implicated in the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease and heavy metal ions such as Fe3+, Zn2+, and Cu2+are known to be involved in the process. In this work, we explored the use of FTIR spectroscopy to look into the modulation effects of Fe3+, Zn2+, and Cu2+on the amyloid fibrillation of α-synuclein. We performed a curve-fitting analysis on the FTIR amide I bands of these α-synuclein fibril systems, namely, the pristine fibril and the fibrils prepared in the presence of Fe3+, Zn2+, and Cu2+. We found that the α-synuclein fibrils under the influences of metal ions all possessed a parallel β-sheet structure, turn structure, and disordered structure, similar to that of pristine α-synuclein fibril. We also observed metal-induced increases in the proportions of the β-sheet secondary structure within the α-synuclein fibrils, with Fe3+being the most effective inducer. We performed second derivative analysis of the side chain carboxylic groups of α-synuclein fibrils and found that the side chain microenvironment of the α-synuclein fibrils was more influenced by Fe3+than Zn2+, and Cu2+. In addition, our atomic force microscopic study revealed that the morphologies of α-synuclein fibrils under the influence of Fe3+was quite different from that of the Zn2+and Cu2+systems. Our FTIR results suggested that the modulation effects of Fe3+, Zn2+, and Cu2+on α-synuclein fibrillation occurred at both secondary and quaternary structural levels. At last, we proposed a mechanistic hypothesis to interpret how metal ions could affect the morphology of α-synuclein amyloid fibril based on the conformational plasticity properties of intrinsically disordered proteins.Keywords:amyloid;FTIR;α-synuclein;fibrillation;metal ion;fibril;secondary structure

A two-dimensional (2D) water-stable Cd (II) luminescent coordination polymer ( 1 ), namely {[CdLCl 2 ]} n , was obtained through assembly of a new 2-deoxy- d -ribose derivative ligand (L) with CdCl 2 , 1 showed high stability in water. Further investigation showed that 1 can be used as luminescent probe for the organoarsenic compound Roxarsine (ROX) with high selectivity and sensitivity, high quenching constants (K SV = 2.34 × 10 4 M −1 ), low limits of detection (LOD) (0.16 μM) and good recyclability in aqueous media. In addition, this luminescent probe can detect some inorganic harmful ions (Fe 3+ , Cr 2 O 7 2− and CrO 4 2− ) with excellent versatility. The detection mechanism was proved that the quenching was caused by competitive absorption and resonance energy transfer effect between 1 and analytes. More strikingly, a simple 1 -based test strip was developed owing to the quick response and recyclability of 1 , which shows visible quenching signals under UV light even when analytes concentrations are as low as 5 μM. This work has provided an effective method for the design of multifunctional CP luminescent sensors for pollutants detections in aqueous media.

Sulfur quantum dots (SQDs), as a novel metal-free fluorescent material, are getting increasingly tremendous attention in metal ion detection, especially for Fe 3+ , due to the merits of antimicrobial potential, low toxicity, and exciting optoelectronic properties. However, sensing mechanism of SQD based fluorescent probe for Fe 3+ is not clear yet, and high sensitivity and large detection range remain a challenge. Here, we report the synthesis of hydrophilic SQDs as a fluorescent nanoprobe for Fe 3+ via a fluorescent turn-off mode. We systematically studied the quenching mechanism by ultraviolet–visible absorption spectra , steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescent spectra, and temperature-dependent quenching constants. Results unclearly evidenced the quenching behavior to both inner filter effect and static quenching. Furthermore, the nanoprobe presents a large detection range from 2.5 to 700 μM and a limit of detection low to 53.6 nM, both of which are the record performance to our knowledge. At last, it shows high selectivity toward Fe 3+ and presents no ionic strength effect in the range of investigation, which enables surprising results for Fe 3+ detection in deionized water with interference ion and real water samples.

Luminescent dye molecules have attracted enormous research interest, whereas, there are inherent drawbacks that limit their utilization across a broad variety of fields. Herein, a novel dual-luminescent carboxylic acid functionalization Eu 3+ /Hoc@UIO-66(H 3 BTC) (Hoc = 7-hydroxycoumarin) was prepared by introducing luminescent dye molecules (Hoc) into the UiO-66-type dual-ligand metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) utilize the encapsulation approach and postsynthetic modification (PSM). UIO-66(H 3 BTC) was constructed using 1,4-dicarboxybenzene (TPA) as the first ligand, which can restrict the aggregation-induced quenching of Hoc dyes and maintains the Hoc dyes stably included after preparation. 1,3,5-benzenetricar boxylic acid (H 3 BTC) was used as a second ligand to sensitize Eu 3+ ions for the antenna effect emission and provide detection sites. Eu 3+ /Hoc@UIO-66(H 3 BTC) material possesses blue luminescence from Hoc molecules as well as red luminescence from Eu 3+ when irradiated by UV lamp, which can be used for ratiometric luminescence detection of Cu 2+ /Fe 3+ through reference to the intensity ratios of two emitting peaks. Eu 3+ /Hoc@MOFs(H 3 BTC) as a luminescence sensor, displays an ultrahigh sensitivity (Cu 2+ :4.58 μM, Fe 3+ :18 μM), strong ant-interference ability, and fast response for detecting analytes. This project demonstrates that the dual-ligand Zr-based MOFs and luminescence dyes offers a novel ratiometric luminescence detection platform for heavy metal ions visible identification.

Heavy metal contamination is widely present in the spinning field. Some heavy metal ions such as Fe 3+ may accumulate in the coagulation bath using ionic liquids (ILs) as green solvents to prepare regenerated cellulose fibers (RCFs), which seriously affect the performance of RCFs and the subsequent regeneration of ILs. This study proposed a new strategy to selectively adsorb Fe 3+ from ILs aqueous solution using carboxyl-functionalized wood microchannel (CW). The CW was optimized by citric acid concentration, reaction time, and temperature using carboxyl group contents as an indicator. The physic-chemical properties of CW were characterized, and its adsorption performance for Fe 3+ was also evaluated in a water system. Furthermore, the adsorption selectivity of CW for Fe 3+ and ILs was investigated. The results demonstrate that the CW had a high adsorption ratio for Fe 3+ (94.73%), while that for ILs was 4.20%. The selective adsorption mechanism, in which the Fe 3+ is mainly separated from ILs aqueous solution by complexation with carboxyl group, was confirmed by FTIR, XPS, MIP, and DFT calculation. Accordingly, this paper may provide a new strategy to selectively adsorb Fe 3+ from ILs aqueous solution, thus offering an economical and efficient method for ILs recovery and water purification .

Quantitative and accurate determination of iron ions play a vital role in maintaining environment and human health, but very few polymeric chemosensors were available for the detection of Fe3+ in aqueous solutions. Herein, a water-soluble rhodamine-poly (ethylene glycol) conjugate (DRF-PEG), as a dual responsive colorimetric and fluorescent polymeric sensor for Fe3+ detection with high biocompatibility, was first synthesized through Schiff base reaction between rhodamine 6G hydrazide and benzaldehyde-functionalized polyethylene glycol. As expected, the introduction of PEG segment in DRF-PEG significantly improved the water solubility of rhodamine derivatives and resulted in a good biosensing performance. The detection limit of DRF-PEG for Fe3+ in pure water is 1.00 μM as a fluorescent sensor and 3.16 μM as a colorimetric sensor at pH 6.5. The specific sensing mechanism of DRF-PEG toward Fe3+ is proposed based on the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) mechanism, in which the O and N atoms in rhodamine moiety, together with the benzene groups from benzaldehyde-modified PEG segment, participate in coordination with Fe3+. Furthermore, DRF-PEG was applied for the ratiometric imaging of Fe3+ in HeLa cells and showed the potential for quantitative determination of Fe3+ in fetal bovine serum samples. This work provides insights for the design of water-soluble chemosensors, which can be implemented in iron-related biological sensing and clinical diagnosis.

Flexible strain sensors are attracting enormous attention due to their high stretchability and sensitivity that are required for wearable devices and electronic skin. However, diverse application environments require materials whose hardness can be adjusted to satisfy different demands. Herein, we developed a synergistic dual network hydrogel PANI-P(AAm-co-AA)@Fe3+ composed of an iron-coordinated poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) network and a conductive polyaniline network with adjustable mechanical properties and high sensitivity. Through controlling the degree of protonation, the cross-linking density will be changed and the mechanical properties of PANI-P(AAm-co-AA)@Fe3+ can be regulated in a wide range (ultimate tensile stress: 0.0710–0.3054 MPa) (fracture strain: 145–880%). Besides, the host–guest interaction between β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and polyaniline improves the compatibility of polyaniline in a hydrogel substance and leads to the formation of homogenous interpenetrating networks, which provide PANI-P(AAm-co-AA)@Fe3+ with outstanding and steady conductivity (2.03–3.67 S m−1). Furthermore, PANI-P(AAm-co-AA)@Fe3+ exhibits highly linear sensitivity, a wide working region (gauge factor = 0.48 at 0–400% strain) and excellent durability (300 cycles). A strain sensor based on this hydrogel can detect not only large movements such as bending fingers and wrists but also delicate movements such as swallowing and a pulse, indicating its enormous potential in wearable devices, human health monitoring, electronic skin, human–machine interactions and so on.

An approach to the detection of F−ions in food samples was developed based on a “switch-off-on” fluorescence probe of silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs). The fluorescence of the synthetic SiNPs was gradually quenched in the presence of Fe3+ion and slightly recovered with the addition of F−ion owing to the formation of a stable and colorless ferric fluoride. The fluorescence recovery exhibited a good linear relationship (R2= 0.9992) as the concentration of F−ion increased from 0 to 100 μmol·L−1. The detection limit of the established method of F−ion was 0.05 μmol·L−1. The recovery experiments confirmed the accuracy and reliability of the proposed method. The ultraviolet–visible spectra, fluorescence decays, and zeta potentials evidenced the fluorescence quenching mechanism involving the electron transfer between the SiNPs and Fe3+ion, while the fluorescence recovery resulted from the formation of ferric fluoride. Finally, SiNPs were successfully applied to detect F−ions in tap water, Antarctic krill, and Antarctic krill powder.Keywords:determination;Fe3+ion;F−ion;fluorescence switch-off-on;silicon nanoparticles;Antarctic krill

Structural delamination of bulk layered metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) remains a great challenge, largely owing to a lack of general synthetic strategies. Here, we reported a simple solvent-free intercalation strategy for the delamination of rare-earth-based MOF (RE-MOF) with a topology structure of MIL-78 by tuning the chain length of quaternary ammonium salts. Four types of quaternary ammonium salts, involving tetraethylammonium bromide (TEAB), tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPAB), tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB), and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) were introduced to investigate their intercalation capabilities. It is evident in our case that the interruption/intercalation behavior of quaternary ammonium salts differs with their steric structures, and the chain-like CTAB can induce obvious delamination of MIL-78 crystals. Particularly, the CTAB-intercalated ultrathin Eu-based MIL-78 nanosheets exhibited unique selective photoelectrochemical sensing property toward trace amounts of Fe3+ ions in aqueous solution with a detection limit of 0.0899 μM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. These results demonstrated a green bottom-up strategy to obtain high-quality RE-MOF nanosheets for potential photocurrent response applications.

Fe 3+ -mediated coal-assisted water electrolysis (CAWE) for hydrogen production is an effective way to utilize coal resources. Low-rank coal, which has a high abundance, is rich in mineral matter and oxygen-containing functional groups (OGs). To promote the development of Fe 3+ -mediated CAWE of low-rank coal, the roles of mineral matter and OGs in Fe 3+ -mediated CAWE are investigated in this study. Besides, to understand the reaction mechanism of coal electrolysis and provide guidance for the effective use of electrolyzed coal, the microstructural, surface structure, and microcrystalline changes of the coal are analyzed via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The results show that minerals and OGs have a positive and negative influence on the Fe 3+ -mediated CAWE, respectively. The hydrogen yields of demineralized coal and oxidized coal are 33.15% and 68.47% lower than that of raw coal owing to the influence of minerals and OGs, respectively. After electrolysis, the degree of aromatic ring condensation increases whereas coal rank decreases; the content of –OH on the coal surface increases and the composition of organic sulfur on the coal surface is altered; and the crystallite diameter of the coal changes.

Herein, a new double-enzymes-modulated fluorescent assay based on the quenching of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) by Fe 3+ was constructed for sensitive determination of OPs. OPs can inhibit the activity of acetylcholinesterase to reduce the production of choline and further lead to the lack of H 2 O 2 in the presence of choline oxidase. Therefore, Fe 2+ cannot be converted into Fe 3+ , resulting in “turn-on” fluorescence of UCNPs. Under optimal conditions, an excellent linear correlation between the inhibition efficiency and the logarithm of the chlorpyrifos concentration was achieved with a detection limit (LOD) of 6.7 ng/mL in the range of 20–2000 ng/mL. The recovery for chlorpyrifos in apples and cucumbers was 89.5–97.1%. The results were consistent with those obtained by GC–MS. Overall, the integration of UCNPs into the double-enzymes-mediated Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ conversion endows this method with desirable rapidity, sensitivity, selectivity, stability, operational simplicity, and strong anti-interference capability, holding great potential in the application of food safety.

The novel nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) with high fluorescence quantum yield of 23.2% were successfully prepared via a simple hydrothermal reaction with citric acid and 2,2'-dipicolylamine. The as-prepared blue fluorescent N-CQDs had excellent water dispersibility, and showed pH and excitation-dependent emission behaviors. Noticeably, owing to the strong interaction between the residual 2,2'-dipicolylamine group on the surface of N-CQDs and Fe3+, the N-CQDs could be used as a turn off fluorescence probe for Fe3+ sensing through an electron transfer process. Moreover, the photoluminescent N-CQDs/poly(vinyl alcohol) film was further applied for latent fingermark imaging.
