Steric hindrance effects of diverse substituents in spirobisindane-based polyimides for gas separation

Kuangguo Yan,Dongpeng Li,Mingzhu Xie,Liwei Wu,Fan Yang,Changtong Yu,Shunhang Wei,Dandan Li,Qian Chen,Chunhai Chen,Pengfei Yang,Yaozu Liao

Development of polymer membranes that combine high processability with superior gas permselectivity remains a critical challenge. In this work, a series of spirobisindane-based polyimides bearing diverse substituents (SPIRO-PIs) were synthesized by polymerization with 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA). Substituents including H, -CF 3 , and -CH 3 were introduced to disrupt chain packing, reduce packing efficiency and systematically tuning the fractional free volume (FFV) and gas separation properties of the resulting polyimides. The obtained SPIRO-PIs exhibited excellent solubility in common organic solvents and good processability. Gas separation measurements showed that SPIRO-CH 3 -6FDA exhibits a CO 2 permeability of 578 Barrer and a CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 17.4, while SPIRO-CF 3 -6FDA exhibits a CO 2 permeability of 428 Barrer and a CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 22.9. Furthermore, SPIRO-CH 3 -6FDA displays a high BET surface area of 629 m 2 g −1 , mainly attributed to the enhanced steric hindrance induced by methyl substituents. These SPIRO-PIs also demonstrated excellent mechanical strength and outstanding thermal stability, highlighting their potential as promising candidates for high-performance gas separation membranes.

Machine-learning-assisted Cr2O3 nanoparticle gas sensor for methamphetamine screening in complex backgrounds

Longlong Li,Pengfei Cheng,Yinglin Wang,Bowen Fang,Chen Wang,Chao Liu,Xiaochuan He,Qinghua Liu,Bo Yan,Qi Liao,Ying Jiao,Shanfu Sun

Methamphetamine (MET) is highly addictive and poses serious social hazards, with its abuse presenting severe challenges to global health and safety. This study employed a simple solution combustion method to synthesize high specific surface area (SSA) Cr 2 O 3 nanoparticles, enabling highly selective detection of trace MET vapors in complex alcohol backgrounds. Structural analysis confirms the surface is enriched with Cr 3 + Lewis acid sites and surface-adsorbed oxygen species. This Cr 2 O 3 sensor exhibits optimal sensing performance to MET at 200 °C, demonstrating fast response/recovery, excellent repeatability, moisture resistance, and long-term stability. Pyridine-infrared spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy confirm the presence and Lewis acidity of Cr 3+ centers. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further show that MET preferentially coordinates with surface Cr 3+ sites through its secondary amine group. By integrating principal component analysis (PCA) with a one-dimensional residual convolutional neural network (1D-ResNet), the Cr 2 O 3 sensor exhibited good MET discrimination capability against multiple drugs, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and environmental interfering gases (such as NO 2 , H 2 , and CO). This study demonstrates the selective detection and identification of MET in complex backgrounds using a Cr 2 O 3 sensor, providing a novel strategy for developing portable smart drug screening sensors suitable for complex field environments.

Understanding and suppressing gas evolution in lithium metal batteries with ether-based electrolytes

Hung Samantha T.,Wang Yuchun,Cai Ziman,Wang Chongzhen,Shao Zirui,Sun Juanjuan,Li Haoran,Liang Jinding,Bai Lu,Wu Erxiao,Ulissi Ulderico,Yan Xiaolin,Chen Fangyun,Zhu Falin,He Junhao,Luo Xiaonan,Liu Na,Wang Hansen,Ouyang Chuying

Understanding and suppressing gas evolution is critical to enabling high-energy-density lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Yet, comprehensive investigations in ether-based systems remain limited. Here we quantify gas generation in ether-based LMBs and elucidate the underlying mechanisms. We link CO and CO 2 production to the cathode, and CH 4 evolution to the anode. Notably, CO and CO 2 are consumed at the Li anode to form Li-containing species such as Li 2 CO 3 . Although CH 4 ultimately dominates the gaseous products, its evolution during cycling is delayed until a distinct onset point. We show that in a high-concentration ether electrolyte, anode activation improves Li deposition morphology and suppresses interfacial reactions, extending the number of cycles to gas onset and cell failure by an order of magnitude. Achieving these gains without altering the electrolyte enables the reconsideration of seemingly impractical electrolytes, highlighting a practical strategy to enhance the safety and performance of commercial LMBs.

Electronic charge modulation in Bi2O3/SnO2 heterostructures for enhanced NO2 gas-sensing performance

Muhammad Javed Liaqat,Shahid Hussain,Adil Shafi Ganie,Mohammed Mujahid Alam,Rajesh Kumar Manavalan,Abdullah G. Al-Sehemi,Guanjun Qiao,Guiwu Liu

Environmental monitoring has become essential for recognizing and mitigating the effects of the increased release of hazardous gases on ecosystems and human health. NO 2 is harmful air pollutant, mainly emitted by combustion sources and is associated with respiratory problems and photochemical smog. The present investigation utilized a simple hydrothermal approach to synthesis Bi 2 O 3 /SnO 2 heterostructures designed for the detection of NO 2 gas at low concentrations. The Bi/Sn-2 heterostructure exhibited a remarkable response (R g /R a ) of 105.4 upon exposure to 50 ppm of NO 2 gas. Furthermore, the Bi/Sn-2 heterostructure exhibited significant repeatability in its performance for 8 continuous cycles while ensuring long stability for 30 days. The exceptional responsiveness and selectivity towards NO 2 gas have been attributed to the formation of a p-n junction, augmented by the combined effect of increased surface area and unique morphological characteristics. This study demonstrates a viable approach to develop metal oxides heterojunctions that can detect low concentrations of NO 2 gas.

Waste asphalt derived hierarchically porous carbon for high-performance electrocatalytic hydrogen gas capacitors

Ahmad Touqeer,Zhu Zhengxin,Sajid Muhammad,Wang Weiping,Ma Yirui,Ali Mohsin,Khan Nawab Ali,Liu Shuang,Zhang Zuodong,Chen Wei

Along with the surging demand for energy storage devices, the cost and availability of the materials remain dominant factors in slowing down their industrial application. The repurposing of waste asphalt into high-performance electrode materials is of significant interest, as it holds the potential to circumvent energy and environmental issues. Here, we report the controllable synthesis of asphalt-derived mesoporous carbon as an active material for electrocatalytic hydrogen gas capacitor (EHGC). The hierarchically porous carbon (HPC) with a high surface area of 1943.4 m 2 ·g −1 can operate in pH universal aqueous electrolytes in EHGC. It displays a specific energy and power density of 57 Wh·kg −1 and 554 W·kg −1 in neutral electrolyte as well as 52 Wh·kg −1 and 657 W·kg −1 in acidic electrolyte. Additionally, the charge storage mechanism of HPC–EHGC is studied with the help of Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Furthermore, the assembled HPC–EHGC device displays a discharge capacitance of 170 F·g −1 with an excellent capacitance retention rate of 100% up to 20000 cycles at 10 A·g −1 in acidic electrolyte. This work introduces a novel approach to converting waste asphalt into high-performance carbon for EHGC, achieving superior performance over commercial materials. By simultaneously addressing environmental waste issues and advancing energy storage technology, this study makes a significant contribution to sustainable materials science and next-generation battery development.

GSH-Triggered Nitric Oxide-Releasing Polycarbonate Nanoplatform for Synergistic Gas-Sonodynamic Antitumor Therapy

Hao Liao,Yuyue Xiong,Jinghang Li,Dongdong Wang,Jinglong Yang,Dong Xie,Lesan Yan

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) emerges as a promising noninvasive modality for deep tumors but is hindered by the hypoxic tumor microenvironment and glutathione (GSH)-mediated reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging. Herein, we report a GSH-responsive nanoplatform fabricated from an mPEG-b-PMNC copolymer, enabling spatiotemporal codelivery of nitric oxide (NO) donors and the sonosensitizer chlorin e6 (Ce6) via self-assembled micelles. Upon exposure to elevated intracellular GSH, the micelles disintegrate to release NO and Ce6 selectively. The released NO attenuates hypoxia through downregulation of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and synergizes with ultrasound-triggered Ce6-generated ROS to yield highly cytotoxic peroxynitrite (ONOO–). This integrated synergy substantially potentiates SDT outcomes, as evidenced by an IC50 of 1.935 μg/mL for mPEG-b-PMNC@Ce6 micelles under ultrasound, outperforming free Ce6 (4.808 μg/mL) and control mPEG-b-PCL@Ce6 (2.736 μg/mL). This polycarbonate-based strategy provides a novel approach for synergistic gas-sonosensitizer delivery, overcoming key limitations of conventional SDT for treating hypoxic tumors.

Dithienyl benzothiadiazole derivatives: A new type of stationary phases for capillary gas chromatography

Tao Sun,Liu Tian,Jianmei Li,Meiling Qi,Ruonong Fu,Xuebin Huang

Dithienyl benzothiadiazole (TBT) derivatives are characteristic of specific molecular structures and excellent thermal stability, offering the great potential for their use as stationary phases for capillary gas chromatography (GC). However, no related publications are available to date. Here we first report the exploration of two TBT derivatives, namely, 4,7-bis(5-dodecylthiophen-2-yl) benzothiadiazole (TBT-C12, a new derivative), and 4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl) benzothiadiazole (TBT), for the purpose. First, TBT-C12 and TBT were synthesized and statically coated onto capillary columns. Both of the as-prepared columns were characterized as nonpolar nature by the determined McReynolds constants. The results showed that both TBT-C12 and TBT columns achieved excellent separations for n -alkanes, esters and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and the TBT-C12 column exhibited better thermal stability (up to 280   °C) than the TBT column. Moreover, a comparative study between the TBT-type columns and a commercial column was also made, suggesting the better selectivity of the TBT-type stationary phases toward n -alkanes and PAHs than that of the commercial one. Additionally, thermodynamic parameters suggested that the retention behaviors of n -alkanes and PAHs on the TBT-C12 column was mainly controlled by entropy change (Δ S ). In conclusion, this work demonstrates the excellent chromatographic performance of TBT derivatives as a new type of GC stationary phases and their potential in separation science .

A chiral emissive porous organic cage used for high-resolution gas chromatography separations

Zhen Wang,Wei Wang,Bo Tang,Liquan Sun,Fulai Zhang,Aiqin Luo

Herein, we report a chiral and porous tubular organic molecular cage (3P-1) that was obtained through a [3+6] imine condensation reaction between ETTBA (4,4′,4′′,4′′′-(ethene-1,1,2,2-tetrayl)-tetrabenzaldehyde) and (R, R)-CHDA ((R, R)-diaminocyclohexane), as the stationary phase for preparing a 3P-1-coated capillary column by the static coating method. Because the chirality of (R, R)-CHDA was transferred from the point to the chiral face of TPE (tetraphenylethylene) during the formation of the 3P-1 cage, it provides a chiral and porous environment within it. The prepared 3P-1 chiral porous cage is verified by a variety of characterizations. Achiral mixtures, including halogenated benzenes, alkylbenzenes, esters, n-alcohols, n-alkanes, Grob reagent and isomers, have been separated on the 3P-1-coated column. In addition, the separation performance for various racemates, including ethers, esters, alcohols, epoxides, and amino acid derivatives, on the 3P-1-coated column was evaluated. Nine racemates including butyl glycidyl ether, γ-heptalactone, 2-hexanol, 2,3-butanediol, epichlorohydrin, epibromohydrin, 3-buten-2-ol, DL-threonine, and DL-isoleucine have been resolved on this column, and it showed good chiral resolution capacity for them. The 3P-1-coated column exhibited good enantioseparation complementarity for separating some racemates compared with the β-DEX 120 commercial column, and it could even separate some racemates that the β-DEX 120 commercial column could not separate well. Furthermore, the prepared 3P-1-coated column presents good reproducibility after multiple injections of the same analytes and good thermal stability. In summary, all of the studies in this work demonstrate the good application potential of the 3P-1-coated capillary for GC separations.

Hydrate-Based Mild Separation of Lean-CH4/CO2 Binary Gas at Constant Pressure

Shuanshi Fan,Hong Huang,Chi Yu,Yanhong Wang,Xuemei Lang,Shenglong Wang,Gang Li,Wangyang Yu

The product gas of natural gas hydrate production by CO2 replacement is the lean-CH4/CO2 binary gas which contains 85–95% CO2. In this work, the lean-CH4/CO2 (10 mol % CH4/90 mol % CO2) binary mixture was used to simulate the product gas of natural gas hydrate production via CO2 replacement, and a promising and mild (low pressure) hydrate-based gas separation (HBGS) technology was employed. This work innovatively proposes to inject the reaction liquid to maintain the constant pressure of the whole process, which makes hydrates form continuously to increase the gas consumption. First, the hydrate phase equilibrium of 10 mol % CH4/90 mol % CO2 + 5 wt % tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB, aq) was measured in the range of 280–287 K and 0.5–4 MPa. After that, hydrate-based mild separation of the lean-CH4/CO2 binary gas was conducted with the help of TBAB at a constant pressure in the range of 1–4 MPa. The results show that after HBGS in addition with 5 wt % TBAB(aq) at 1 MPa and 278 K, the CH4 concentration could be increased from 17.2 to 66.2 mol % under constant pressure operation, while it was just slightly increased to 17.2 mol % under nonconstant pressure operation. HBGS with 5 wt % TBAB under constant pressure had the best separation performance. Subcooling has a greater effect on the separation kinetics. HBGS of 10 mol % CH4/90 mol % CO2 under a constant pressure operation of 2 MPa, subcooling of 6 K, and 5 wt % TBAB has the highest separation factor above 37. It is suggested that hydrate-based lean-CH4/CO2 separation experiments are carried out at a mild pressure with low G/L and, more importantly, in a short time. This work proposed a mild HBGS of lean-CH4/CO2 separation, which could benefit the separation of gas produced by natural gas hydrate replacement exploitation. This work also simultaneously provides insights into other HBGS for other gas mixtures (flue gas, coalbed methane, biogas, and shift gas) to achieve low energy consumption, high gas consumption, and high efficiency.

A Novel Gas Sensor for Detecting Pork Freshness Based on PANI/AgNWs/Silk

Yahui Li,Yanxiao Li,Jiyong Shi,Zhihua Li,Xin Wang,Xuetao Hu,Yunyun Gong,Xiaobo Zou

A novel, operational, reliable, flexible gas sensor based on silk fibroin fibers (SFFs) as a substrate was proposed for detecting the freshness of pork. Silk is one of the earliest animal fibers utilized by humans, and SFFs exposed many biological micromolecules on the surface. Thus, the gas sensor was fabricated through polyaniline (PANI) and silver nanowires (AgNWs) and deposited on SFFs by in-suit polymerization. With trimethylamine (TMA) as a model gas, the sensing properties of the PANI/AgNWs/silk composites were examined at room temperature, and the linear correlativity was very prominent between these sensing measures and the TMA measures in the range of 3.33 μg/L–1200 μg/L. When the pork sample is detected by the sensor, it can be classified into fresh or stale pork with the total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) as an index. The result indicated that the gas sensor was effective and showed great potential for applications to detect the freshness of pork. Keywords:polyaniline;silver nanowires;silk;trimethylamine;gas sensor;pork freshness

Integrated intelligent sensing system with WO3/CNTs sensor for on-site gas detection

Mingyang Gao,Wen Zhang,Jun Guo,Licun Fu

Gas sensors integrated with intelligent systems are of great importance for real-time environmental monitoring and personal exposure assessment. In particular, nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), a toxic byproduct of combustion and industrial processes, poses severe risks to human health even at trace levels, highlighting the urgent need for sensitive and portable monitoring technologies. Here, we present a tungsten trioxide (WO 3 )/carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-based flexible sensor coupled with an Integrated Intelligent Sensing System (IISS) capable of on-site NO 2 detection, signal processing, and wireless mobile display. The optimized WO 3 /CNTs sensor exhibits outstanding sensing performance, delivering a high response of 425.1 % toward 1 ppm NO 2 . Distinctively, by integrating the sensor into the IISS platform, real-time NO 2 concentrations can be acquired, processed, and displayed on a mobile device, enabling direct and user-friendly exposure monitoring. These results highlight the novelty of combining a high-performance WO 3 /CNTs sensor with a miniaturized IISS, offering a practical strategy for intelligent, wearable, and portable gas detection applications.

Room-temperature highly sensitive CO gas sensor based on Au-modified SnO₂/ZnO

Zhang Yuexing,Feng Wenlin,Ullah Arif

To address the need for high-sensitivity carbon monoxide (CO) gas sensing at room temperature, a CO gas sensor based on Au-modified tin oxide/zinc oxide (SnO₂/ZnO) nanocomposites is fabricated. SnO₂ nanoparticles, ZnO nanosheets, and Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) were synthesized using sacrificial template, hydrothermal, and chemical reduction methods, respectively. The resulting nanocomposite was then drop-casted onto interdigitated electrodes and dried to obtain the CO gas sensor. The performance of the sensor was evaluated using a custom airtight chamber and a semiconductor parameter analyzer. The n–n heterojunction between SnO₂ and ZnO significantly increased oxygen vacancy in the composite material, enhancing surface chemisorption of oxygen. Moreover, the catalytic sensitization effect of AuNPs facilitated electron migration, while their inherent spillover effect promoted the activation of gas molecule interactions. Consequently, the sensor exhibited a high response (22.11%) to 70 ppm CO at room temperature, along with excellent stability, selectivity, and anti-interference capabilities. This work offers a promising approach for developing highly sensitive room-temperature gas sensors.
