Green and scalable fabrication of self-adhesive PAA-GO@SF hydrogels for multifunctional physiological monitoring and human-machine interaction

Zhengdong Feng,Danlin Li,Fangyi Li,Jiang Zhao

Green one-step UV-cured self-adhesive PAA-GO@SF hydrogels without toxic reagents. • Tuning conductive-to-polymer ratio links GO dispersion to hydrogen-bonding network and electromechanical properties. • Balanced performance (GF = 3.68, >1000 cycles, >120 days) enables reliable ECG and HMI applications. Hydrogels are attractive for flexible sensors due to their softness, biocompatibility, and stretchability, but complex fabrication often limits their practical application. Here, we report a self-adhesive sensing hydrogel fabricated via a straightforward one-step ultraviolet-induced copolymerization of polyacrylic acid (PAA) and graphene oxide (GO), with silk fibroin (SF) serving as a biomolecular dispersant and crosslinker to ensure a stable, homogeneous network. The resulting PAA-GO@SF hydrogel delivers a high tensile strength of 120 kPa, a gauge factor (GF) of 3.68, and stable operation over 1000 stretching cycles. In contrast, the same formulation without SF shows a GF of only 1.36, confirming that SF plays a critical role in achieving enhanced sensitivity. The sensing hydrogel enables real-time, high-fidelity detection of physiological signals, including electrocardiogram (ECG) waveforms with clearly distinguishable P-QRS-T (P, QRS, and T waves) features. As a direct benefit for targeted applications, a conformal hydrogel-based sensor array attached to a human hand allows a robotic hand to accurately mimic complex gestures, demonstrating the hydrogel-based sensor's utility in human–machine interaction (HMI). Overall, this work presents a scalable and eco-friendly strategy for multifunctional sensing hydrogel, with clear advantages for electronic skin, motion monitoring, and intelligent robotics.

Achieving near-zero wear on the surface of DLC coatings with GO@Ce-MOF solid–liquid composite superlubrication system

Jialong Shi,Haijie Chen,Sijia Chen,Xiaolong Liu,Dapeng Feng,Zhiwen Zheng,Dan Qiao

The development of advanced lubrication technologies is essential for enhancing energy efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and improving mechanical durability. In this study, a high-performance lubrication system tailored for diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings is designed, employing graphene oxide-functionalized cerium-based metal–organic framework (GO@Ce-MOF) composites as nano-additive in an aqueous polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution. The GO@Ce-MOF hybrids were synthesized via electrostatic self-assembly, demonstrating outstanding tribological characteristics with an exceptionally low coefficient of friction (COF ≈ 0.004) and minimal wear on DLC substrates. Post-friction analysis confirmed that the structural integrity of the DLC coating remained unimpaired, with wear predominantly localized on the opposing steel balls. A bilayer tribofilm, approximately 45.5 nm thick and composed of metal oxides and amorphous carbon, formed on the steel surface, facilitating a transition to carbon/carbon friction interfaces. The rod-like architecture of the cerium-based metal–organic framework (Ce-MOF), encapsulated by layered graphene oxide (GO), synergistically contributed to reduced rolling friction and provided carbonaceous precursors for in situ tribofilm formation. This solid–liquid lubrication synergy enabled superlubricity and near-zero wear. The findings demonstrate a novel strategy for promoting in situ growth of carbonaceous tribofilms on dual friction interfaces, offering transformative potential for sustainable lubrication of advanced coating materials.

GO-induced in-situ polymerization of aniline on hydrogel electrolyte into one-body flexible supercapacitor for motion-sensing application

Binggang Li,Jiliu Li,Xuehao Bi,Ankang Tie,Jiale Li,Mingxu Sun,Ziyi Li,Ben Xu

Flexible supercapacitors often face challenges due to the dissociation between electrodes and hydrogel electrolytes. To address this issue and enhance performance, we propose an in-situ growth strategy for integrating electrode materials with hydrogel electrolytes into a unified supercapacitor structure. In this work, we demonstrate the in-situ polymerization of aniline under slow reaction kinetics on a polyvinyl acetate/sodium alginate-based hydrogel modified with GO. The GO plays a dual role: (1) its π-π interaction with the aromatic rings of PANI and hydrogen bonding with amino groups facilitate the formation of a continuous porous PANI structure, while (2) the controlled polymerization kinetics improve crystallinity. The resulting PANI-LT-GO device delivers an optimized areal specific capacitance of 102.51 mF cm -2 at 0.3 mA cm -2 , with excellent mechanical stability, rate capability, and cycling performance—showing no degradation after deformation. Furthermore, by embedding a piezoelectric PVDF-TrFE(poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene)) thin film within the hydrogel electrolyte, the flexible device achieves self-charging functionality and can serve as a stress sensor for human motion monitoring. These properties, including biocompatibility and the ability to generate voltage, highlight the promise of device for enabling self-powered wearable electronics.

A high-sensitivity CO₂ sensor based on a ZIF-8/GO hybrid membrane-modified cascaded dual-sphere fiber interferometer

Hui Jia,Bo Dong,Senpeng Zhang,Zhuojun Wang,Yulong Wang,Yankuan Li

Accurate detection of carbon dioxide (CO₂) is important in environmental monitoring and industrial process control. Optical fiber sensors have attracted considerable attention for CO₂ detection owing to their compact size, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and capability for remote sensing. However, achieving high sensitivity and adsorption affinity within practical CO₂ concentration ranges remains challenging. In this work, we propose a fiber interferometric CO₂ sensor based on a cascaded dual-sphere intermodal interferometer (IMI) functionalized with a ZIF-8/graphene oxide (GO) hybrid membrane. The dual-sphere interferometric structure enhances the interaction between cladding modes and the surrounding environment, while the ZIF-8/GO hybrid membrane provides a hierarchical adsorption–diffusion interface that improves CO₂ adsorption affinity and gas transport efficiency. Experimental results show that the sensor exhibits a high sensitivity of −286 pm/% CO₂ within the concentration range of 0.5–4.0%, together with excellent linearity (R² = 0.998), good repeatability, and negligible interference from temperature and humidity variations. Furthermore, the hierarchical micro-mesoporous architecture facilitates efficient gas diffusion, endowing the sensor with favorable response and recovery kinetics for continuous monitoring applications. These results indicate that the proposed sensing strategy provides an effective approach for high-performance optical fiber CO₂ sensing through the integration of an optimized interferometric structure and a hybrid MOF/2D sensing membrane.

Ultraflexible, High-Strength All-in-One Supercapacitors With GO/PVA Xerogel Electrolyte for Completely Dry and Extremely Cold Environments

Yanzhi Cai,Yunge Jiang,Laifei Cheng,Fanfan Wei,Xiaohang Chen,Xinyu Qian,Hui Ding,Mingshu Bai

Flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors using liquid or hydrogel electrolytes face liquid leakage, volatilization, and freezing issues that disrupt ion conduction. This work pioneers a graphene oxide/polyvinyl alcohol (GO/PVA) xerogel electrolyte to overcome these challenges. The three-dimensional GO/PVA network features abundant hydrogen-bonded structures, enabling liquid-free proton conduction within this network. The device is fabricated via in situ growth of polyaniline on both sides of a GO/PVA hydrogel, followed by pressurized drying, which generates a well-integrated electrode–electrolyte interface. This monolithic structure facilitates proton transport via the Grotthuss mechanism. Under completely open conditions (no encapsulation), it retains 93.7% of initial capacitance after 768 h storage and 92.6% after 6 months. At 1 mA cm −2 (a fivefold increase from 0.2 mA cm −2 ), 98.5% capacitance is retained. Benefiting from its liquid-free nature, it achieves 715 mF cm −2 at 1 mA cm −2 and −30 °C after 6 months of storage under these open conditions, preserving 88.7% of its room-temperature capacitance. Pristine and boric acid-modified devices show tensile strengths of 2.8 MPa (221% strain) and 8.8 MPa (164% strain). Importantly, tensile behavior and flexibility remain unchanged even at −30 °C compared to room temperature, positioning this material as a promising candidate for flexible energy-storage devices operating in harsh environments. Graphical A flexible all-solid-state supercapacitor is developed using a GO/PVA xerogel electrolyte with a dense hydrogen-bonding network for liquid-free proton conduction via the Grotthuss mechanism. The in situ grown PANI electrodes and pressurized drying create a monolithic electrode–electrolyte interface. The device retains 92.6% capacitance after 6 months under open conditions and delivers 715 mF cm −2 at −30 °C, with unchanged flexibility.

GO/PVP modified solid polymer electrolyte with fast lithium-ion transport for stable and dendrite-free lithium metal batteries

Lin Liyang,Shi Benrun,Wang Tingbo,Wang Yan,He Yituan,Wei Zhen

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are highly attractive for lithium metal batteries, yet their practical viability is fundamentally plagued by sluggish Li + transport, heterogeneous Li deposition, and the severe agglomeration of nanofillers. Herein, we propose a facile “dual-filler synergistic” strategy to architect high-performance SPEs by simultaneously integrating graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and non-ionic polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) into the PEO-LiTFSI matrix. The hydrophobic groups of PVP are anchored onto GO surfaces to construct a polymeric steric layer, synergistically suppressing PEO crystallinity and accelerating lithium salt dissociation. Benefiting from the dual modulation, the GO/PVP-modified PEO electrolyte (GPP SPE) exhibits an ionic conductivity of 4.1 × 10 −4 S cm −1 and a Li + transference number of 0.57 at 60 o C, coupled with a broadened electrochemical stability window of 4.75 V. Consequently, GPP SPE exhibits superior dendrite suppression, enabling symmetric Li||Li cell to cycle stably for over 1000 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 without short-circuiting. Furthermore, the assembled LiFePO 4 ||Li all-solid-state cells exhibit a high initial discharge capacity of 151.1 mAh g −1 at 0.5C and retain 80.44% capacity after 200 cycles. This study elucidates a scalable and robust paradigm for designing high-safety, high-performance solid-state electrolytes for next-generation energy storage.

Lamellar CoO@MXene/GO membrane switches non-radical pathway from electron transfer to singlet oxygen for ultrafast water decontamination

Yunlong Wang,Xin Guo,Kechen Gu,Chengming Xiao,Wenbo Yang,Chuyan Deng,Junwen Qi,Yujun Zhou,Zhigao Zhu,Yue Yang,Jiansheng Li

Spatial confinement switches non-radical pathways from ETP to a ¹O₂-dominant mechanism. • A 2D CoO@MX/GO membrane creates confined nanochannels for this transition. • Pathway shift confirmed by EPR, fluorescence, and DFT calculations. • Membrane achieves 10,000 × faster degradation kinetics than powder catalysts. • Size exclusion/confined oxidation resist NOM/ions for stable single-pass removal. Spatial confinement within a lamellar catalytic membrane is demonstrated to switch non-radical peroxymonosulfate activation from an electron-transfer process (ETP) to a singlet-oxygen ( 1 O 2 )-dominated pathway. This was achieved by intercalating cobalt oxide-decorated MXene nanosheets (CoO@MX) into graphene oxide (GO) laminates to construct a two-dimensional confined catalytic membrane. The membrane enabled four-orders-of-magnitude faster degradation of phenolic compounds than powder catalysts, with apparent rate constants of 0.093–0.127 ms –1 , achieved complete sulfamethoxazole removal within an ultrashort hydraulic residence time of 68 ms, retained approximately 95% removal under humic-acid interference, and maintained 100% removal efficiency over 50 h of continuous operation. The pathway transition toward singlet-oxygen-dominated oxidation, confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance, in situ fluorescence, and density functional theory calculations, mitigates catalyst fouling and facilitates pollutant mineralization. This work provides a nanoconfinement strategy for steering non-radical oxidation pathways and offers a design principle for efficient, selective, and durable advanced oxidation systems for complex water treatment. Seaweed-derived synthesis of Na3.12Fe2.44(P2O7)2/r-GO aerogels as air stable cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries

Bohan Liu,Yihui Zou,Shuai Chen,Huawei Zhang,Jin Sun,Xilin She,Dongjiang Yang

Due to the high theoretical capacity and open frameworks, the low-cost sodium iron pyrophosphate Na 3.12 Fe 2.44 (P 2 O 7 ) 2 has become a promising candidate for cathode materials of the sodium ion batteries (SIBs). However, NFPO is very sensitive to moisture and CO 2 , which causes serious surface oxidation reaction and results in degraded high-rate charge/discharge performance and cyclic stability. Herein, we developed a seaweed-derived synthesis strategy to prepare air stable NFPO/r-GO aerogels by using sodium alginate (SA) and reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) as precursors. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) proved that there were no residual Na species on the surface of prepared NFPO/r-GO aerogels and no any oxidized impurities after exposing in air for 100 days. When evaluating the NFPO/r-GO aerogels as cathode materials for SIBs, the sample exhibits excellent reversible capacity of 116.1 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C, 88.82% capacity retention after 5000 cycles and superior rate capacity of 72.3 mAh g −1 at 20 C. The superior electrochemical performances are mainly attributed the delicate structure, which can not only increase the electronic conductivity, but also improve air stability of NFPO by suppressing surface side reactions with moisture and CO 2 .

Fabrication and characterization of CL-20/PEI/GO composites with enhanced thermal stability and desensitization via electrostatic self-assembly

Xiaomin Song,Qi Huang,Bo Jin,Rufang Peng

To improve the encapsulation of GO to CL-20, PEI was utilized as a linker bridge to self-assemble into composite CL-20/PEI/GO in this study. The self-assembly was in-depth characterized, including Zeta potential, SEM, DLS, XPS, Raman spectra, HPLC and power-XRD. The possible self-assembled mechanism was also proposed, which indicates the electrostatic interaction introduced by PEI should be responsible for the self-assembly. The performance of a self-assembled composite was characterized by BAM and DSC analysis. And the results indicate the enhanced interaction promotes GO more efficiently encapsulate CL-20 and improve the safety of the energetic material. Therefore, this work demonstrates a novel and facile method to solve the deprived interaction and corresponding weak desensitization between desensitizer and energetic material.

GAC@Fe3O4, LDHs@Fe3O4 and GO@Fe3O4 applied for tetracycline hydrochloride removal in three-dimensional heterogeneous electro-Fenton process

Dandan Lv,Yan Wang,Hui-qiang Li

Tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) was harmful to human as well as ecology due to its persistence. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), granular activated carbon (GAC) and graphene oxide (GO) were selected as the catalyst supporting materials for the three-dimensional heterogeneous electro-Fenton (3D-EF) process. The three materials were then used to prepare catalyst particles of GAC@Fe 3 O 4 , LDHs@Fe 3 O 4 and GO@Fe 3 O 4 to degrade TC-HCl. The characterizations of the LDHs@Fe 3 O 4 (8:2) particles were done by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Brunauer– Emmett–Teller. At pH of 3, the proper ratio of supporting materials (LDHs, GO, GAC) to Fe 3 O 4 improved the removal efficiency of TC-HCl. GAC@Fe 3 O 4 (8:2), LDHs@Fe 3 O 4 (8:2) and GO@Fe 3 O 4 (2:8) obtained better performance, LDHs and GO used as supporting material had better performance than GAC. Further study on the effect of different pH values showed that the LDHs@Fe 3 O 4 (8:2) acquired the highest chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency (63.03%) at pH of 7. LDHs@Fe 3 O 4 (8:2) and GO@Fe 3 O 4 (2, 8) obtained similar COD removal efficiencies at pH of 3. The percentage of Fe 2+ leaching to solution was 2% for the LDHs@Fe 3 O 4 , which was 2.9% for the GAC@Fe 3 O 4 and 5.46% for the GO@Fe 3 O 4 . Experimental results showed that more H 2 O 2 and • OH were produced on the surface of the LDHs with pH of 7. Finally, GC-MS was used to determine the degradation pathway of TC-HCl. The LDHs had obvious advantages as catalyst supporting materials for the 3D-EF process.

Enhanced permeability of rGO/S-GO layered membranes with tunable inter-structure for effective rejection of salts and dyes

Peng Zhang,Ji-Lai Gong,Guang-Ming Zeng,Biao Song,Siyuan Fang,Mi Zhang,Hong-Yu Liu,Shuang-Yan Huan,Ping Peng,Qiu-Ya Niu,Dong-Bo Wang,Jun Ye

In this work, a novel rGO/S-GO laminated membrane was prepared by a pressure-assembly stacked method, followed with a thermal deoxygenation process. The neighboring interlayer spacing ( d ) between the composite layers are tunable due to the incorporation of S-GO. The nano-filtration performances of the rGO/S-GO laminated membranes were evaluated at a low-pressure condition. Molecule dynamics (MD) simulation was used to further investigate the size distribution of spacing between GO, rGO and S-GO sheets. The results of filtration experiments indicated that the obtained rGO/S-GO membrane showed a satisfied rejection performance for the removal of dyes and salts with a pressure of two bar. The rejection rates of MB, CR, RB and MO were 99.5%, 99.9%, 97.3% and 98.6%, while the rejection rates of Na 2 SO 4 , MgSO 4 , MgCl 2 and NaCl were 86.3%, 40.9%, 35.7% and 60.5%, respectively. Compared to the pristine rGO membrane, the water permeation of rGO/S-GO laminated membrane was significantly improved from ∼0.98 to ∼3.78 L/(m 2 ·h·bar) due to the enlarged ‘gateway’ for transport of water molecules. The results of classical MD simulation showed that the neighboring layer spacing of rGO, GO and S-GO was ∼8.4, ∼10.2, and ∼14.3 Å, respectively. Their neighboring layer spacing was dependent on the chemical functional groups on the edges of GO sheets. It was further confirmed that the introduction of chemical groups on the GO caused the expansion of the interlayer ‘gap’ between neighboring sheets, which was responsible for the enhanced permeability. These findings would contribute to the development of GO-based nanofiltration membranes with high permeability and understanding the transport mechanism of water molecule.

Nano-sized architectural design of multi-activity graphene oxide (GO) by chemical post-decoration for efficient uranium(VI) extraction

Peipei Yang,Hongsen Zhang,Qi Liu,Jingyuan Liu,Rongrong Chen,Jing Yu,Jindi Hou,Xuefeng Bai,Jun Wang

The introduction of organic groups onto graphene oxide (GO) platelets can supply additional active sites for adsorption of uranium(VI) (U(VI)) to improve the adsorption capacity. However, as a result of the existence of stabilizing π-conjugation system, a facile and effective modification method remains a challenge. Therefore, a novel strategy is exploited by nano-sized architectural design of multi-activity GO through post-decoration with amidoxime functionalized diaminomaleonitrile (DM-AO). The post-modification of DM-AO successfully activated the inert sites in GO platelets. Meanwhile, the amidoxime group in DM-AO can improve the adsorption selectivity. Adsorption amount of U(VI) on the as prepared GO-DM-AO reached at 935 mg g −1 , which is increased by 209% increment compared with that of pristine GO at the same concentration. The adsorption efficiency of GO-DM-AO is greatly improved, and the time to reach the adsorption equilibrium is half of that of GO. Excitingly, the excellent removal efficiency could still maintained even after 5 cycles of adsorption-desorption. The outstanding adsorption amount, short adsorption equilibrium time, and excellent removal efficiency can provide a theoretical guidance for further immobilization of U(VI) from seawater.
