Significant efforts have recently been exerted toward construction of singlet oxygen (1O2)-dominated catalytic oxidation systems for selective removal of organic contaminants from wastewater, with peroxides serving as the chemical source. However, the relevance of 1O2 in the removal of pollutants remains ambiguous and requires elucidation. In this study, we scrupulously exclude the significant role of 1O2 in contaminant degradation in various peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation systems. Multiple experimental results indicate that the activation of PMS catalyzed by CuO, MnO2, Fe-doped g-C3N4 (Fe–CN), or N-doped graphite does not predominantly follow the 1O2 pathway. More importantly, the reactivity of 1O2 is remarkably overestimated in the literature, given its inferior capacity in degradation of a range of heterocyclic contaminants and aromatic compounds possessing electron-withdrawing groups. In addition, the strong physical quenching effect of water, coupled with the low oxidizing ability of 1O2, would notably reduce the utilization efficiency of peroxide, which is particularly apparent in the degradation of micropollutants. We reckon that this study is expected to end the long-running dispute associated with the relevance of 1O2 in pollutant removal.

Recently, the electro-Fenton (EF) process by coupling cathodic two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e - ORR) with anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has emerged as a potentially viable technology, while the sluggish OER is the main bottleneck. As promising OER catalysts, the amorphous and crystal phases of spinel oxides display high activities and electrical conductivity, respectively. Efforts to produce amorphous/crystal spinel oxides have progressed slowly, and how an amorphous/crystal structure benefits the catalytic performances remains elusive. Herein, Fe-doped NiCo 2 O 4 (Fe-NiCo 2 O 4 ) was used as a model catalyst to explore the effect mechanism of crystallinity controlled by annealing temperature on OER performance. The results display that the Fe-NiCo 2 O 4 obtained at 300 ℃ shows amorphous/crystal structure, which facilitates the active site exposure and the charge transfer, leading to superior OER activity and catalytic stability. Based on the crystallinity regulation of OER catalysts, we propose an anodic optimized strategy to upgrade the EF-related processes by effectively providing O 2 produced in the anode.

Vertical distribution of both the concentration and composition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in ten profiles in Beijing has been investigated. The results showed that PAH concentrations and compositions in topsoil from different sampling sites were different. PAH concentrations were much higher in topsoil of the investigated urban area, industrial region, and paddy field with wastewater irrigation than in other areas. Moreover, PAH concentrations in topsoil were much higher than those at greater depth, where the concentrations were relatively consistent in most soil profiles. The fingerprints of PAHs in the samples from topsoil (0–30 cm) in the same profiles were similar and were obviously different from those at greater depth, suggesting that PAH sources were consistent in topsoil samples and were discriminating between topsoil and deeper soils. PAHs in topsoil mainly arose from mixed sources of combustion of liquid fuel, coal, and/or wood, as well as wastewater irrigation, while those at greater depth were derived from soil genesis and the process of soil formation.

Sodium dehydroacetate (DHA-Na), a widely used preservative, can induce sex-differentiated coagulation disorders primarily resulting from its metabolism. However, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we identified several Cytochrome P450 (CYP450) sub-enzymes involved in sex differences related to DHA-Na metabolism, along with two related DHA-Na metabolites. CYP1A2, CYP3A2, and CYP2D1 were primarily responsible for DHA-Na metabolism, which was stronger in male rats than in female rats. Inhibition of these isoforms separately resulted in the DHA-Na metabolic capacity in male rats becoming equal to, or even weaker than, that in female rats. Furthermore, Cyp1a2, Cyp3a2, Cyp2d1 , and Cyp2c11 expression was higher in male rats than in female rats, suggesting these enzymes are related to exhibited sex differences in DHA-Na metabolism. Moreover, 3-glycoloyl-6-methy-2,3-dihydropyran-2,4-dione (C 8 H 8 O 5 ) and 3-imino-6-methyl-2,3-dihydropran-2,4dione (C 6 H 5 O 3 N) were identified as the two main DHA-Na metabolites. These findings provide crucial insights into potential mechanisms underlying sex differences in DHA-Na metabolism and its metabolites in rats.

Stretchable materials with low hysteresis and strong adhesion are needed in applications, but unifying the two contradictory mechanical properties is challenging. Herein, we propose the design principles of polymer networks that are hyperelastic yet adhesive by rationalizing mechanical heterogeneities. The heterogeneous networks comprise a viscoelastic adhesive surface and a hyperelastic non-adhesive bulk. The former has a stiffness much smaller than that of the latter. We synthesize the networks by harnessing the oxygen inhibition mechanism, construct a polymerization phase diagram by reconciling the kinetics of polymerization and radical quenching of oxygen, and establish a power law criterion for the transition from a viscoelastic adhesive network to a hyperelastic adhesive network. We illustrate the principle with heterogeneous poly(butyl acrylate- co -acrylic acid) networks, achieving hysteresis <5% and adhesion energy >300 J/m 2 . We show that the adhesion energy-thickness relation of hyperelastic adhesive polymer networks is nonlinear below a transition thickness. Hyperelastic and adhesive stretchable materials potentialize high-cycle and fatigue-resistant soft human-machine interfaces and beyond.

In early drug development, amorphous spray-dried dispersions (SDDs) applied to enhance the bioavailability of poorly water-soluble compounds are typically administered to preclinical species via oral gavage in the form of suspensions. The liquid formulations are usually prepared on the same day of dosing to minimize the exposure of the amorphous material to the aqueous vehicle, thereby reducing the risk of crystallization. Dose-ability (e.g. syringe-ability) of the suspensions is also a critical factor for the administration, particularly when high doses, thus concentrations, are required for toxicology studies. As a result, it is standard practice during early formulation screening to assess the stability and the maximum feasible concentration of SDDs in various vehicles. In this study, we evaluated the impact of different vehicles on the performance of a model SDD in-vitro and in-vivo settings, to mitigate the risks associated with its administration in liquid form. A poorly water-soluble compound (GEN-A) was selected to screen various SDDs and generate the SDD model at 30 % drug load with HPMCAS-MF polymer carrier. The SDD was suspended in selected aqueous vehicles after a careful vehicle components screening, that included suspending agents (HPC-SL), solubilizers (PEG400, Propylene glycol), surfactants (Vitamin E TPGS, SLS, Tween 80, Poloxamer 188), and complexing agents (HP-β-CD, SBE-β-CD). The suspensions were characterized for stability, dose-ability and dissolution in biorelevant media, prior administration in pre-clinical species. The SDD dissolution profile revealed that the drug's supersaturation level was positively impacted by the presence of a surfactant (SLS) and a complexing agent (SBE-β-CD) with respect to a suspending agents (HPC-SL) in the vehicle. Similarly, the pharmacokinetics profiles of the drug following the administration of the SDD in a vehicle with a complexing agent (SBE-β-CD) achieved greater exposure compare to the SDD in a vehicle with a suspending agent (HPC-SL). These findings confirm a synergistic effect between the SDD and the vehicles, suggesting that this combination could be leveraged to maximize the advantages of the amorphous approach.

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are regarded as one of the most promising clean and highly efficient power generation technologies. However, obtaining proton exchange membranes with superior performance remains a challenge for the development of PEMFCs. In this work, we synthesized a porous polyhydroxyl polymer, known as BTA, and successfully introduced almost equimolar phosphate and sulfonic acid groups (−SO3H and −PO4H2) into its framework through the simple postmodification process, resulting in BTA-P and BTA-S, respectively. The studies showed that the −SO3H group in BTA-S can ionize a large number of available protons, and its ion exchange capacity (IEC) reaches 1.65 mmol g–1, which is twice higher than that of BTA-P. The available protons can greatly enhance the proton transport efficiency, resulting in a 3 orders of magnitude increase in proton conductivity of BTA-S compared to BTA-P, reaching up to 3.97 × 10–1 S cm–1 at 80 °C and 95% relative humidity (RH). When a 5% BTA-S/Nafion composite is prepared as a proton exchange membrane for an H2/O2 fuel cell, the maximum power density reaches 952.6 mW cm–2, which is 61.9% higher than that of the recast Nafion membrane at 80 °C and 100% RH. This study reveals that the available proton density plays the most important role in proton conducting polymers.

In situ detection of contamination in liquid food production by intelligent sensing equipment in a factory is of great significance to ensure food safety, quality control, process optimization, and cost reduction. Current technologies require samples to be extracted and analyzed using bulky, expensive, and large instruments, which are time-consuming, complex, and cannot be realized in situ detection. In this work, a high-density array Triboelectric Nanogenerator (TENG) probe is fabricated by combining triboelectrification and charge transfer at liquid–solid interface, and interface charge transfer mapping (ICTM) is applied to the identification and safety detection of liquid foods. When a liquid food droplet slides across an insulated surface, the electrometer connected with the metal electrode array will record the electric signals, and the electric signals at each electrode will generate an ICTM. The ICTMs are sensitive to the compositions of various liquid food and additives, thus can be used to in situ detect contamination in liquid food production. Ten different liquid foods are successfully identified by ICTMs, as well as food additives and heavy metals in 5° white vinegar. The detection limit of Pb 2+ in 5° white vinegar is as low as 10 µg L −1 (in line with FDA standards), and the linear range is 0–10 µg L −1 . Finally, through the detection of 20 random samples, the detection accuracy of lead acetate in 5° white vinegar is 95%, and the detection accuracy of potassium sorbate is 90%. The array TENG probe and the generated ICTM open an approach for in situ and rapid food production and safety testing relying on cheap, portable, low-tech instrumentation.

Introduction: Aeromonas hydrophila (AH) is a pathogenic bacterium commonly found in aquatic organisms, particularly in fish products. Baicalein, a bioactive flavonoid derived from traditional Chinese herbal medicine, possesses a wide range of pharmacological properties, including anticancer, antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and anti-inflammatory effects. Methods: In vitro, the Oxford cup method was employed to assess the antibacterial activity of baicalein, while the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined using the microtiter broth dilution technique. Biofilm formation and bacterial motility were evaluated through the crystal violet assay and swimming assay, respectively. The impact of baicalein on bacterial membrane permeability and morphology was observed using the Live/Dead BacLight kit and transmission electron microscopy. In vivo, grass carp were used as the model organism to evaluate the effect of baicalein on AH proliferation, while the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and antioxidant factors was quantified by qRT-PCR.Results: This study demonstrated the antibacterial activity of baicalein against AH infection. Baicalein exhibited bacteriostatic effects in vitro, with an MIC of 40 μg/mL and an MBC of 80 μg/mL. Time-kill assays confirmed its bactericidal properties. Additionally, baicalein inhibited biofilm formation and reduced bacterial motility. The antibacterial mechanism of baicalein involved increased membrane permeability and structural disruption of AH cells. In vivo studies in grass carp revealed a dose-dependent reduction in AH burden following baicalein administration. Moreover, baicalein suppressed the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-8 (IL-8), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), while enhancing the expression of antioxidant-related genes, such as catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR), and superoxide dismutase (SOD). These findings indicate that the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects of baicalein contribute to its protective role against AH infection in vivo.Discussion: Baicalein effectively inhibits the proliferation of AH both in vitro and in vivo, highlighting its potential as a promising pharmacotherapeutic agent for the prevention of AH infections in fish.

Precise construction of proton transfer pathways and modulation of proton carrier microenvironments are crucial for achieving high proton conduction in proton exchange membranes (PEMs). Despite extensive efforts to tailor these microenvironments, the underlying regulation of electron cloud density around proton carriers, intrinsically linked to proton conduction, remains largely overlooked. Herein, MIL-53-SO 3 H-X (X = –F, –Br, –H, –CH 3 ) nanosheets are synthesized via solvothermal coordination of Cr 3+ ions with functionalized terephthalic acid (BDC-X) ligands, followed by post-synthetic sulfonation at unsaturated Cr 3+ sites to anchor –SO 3 H groups. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results reveal that electron-withdrawing –F groups enhance the electron cloud density around –SO 3 H sites, shortening transfer distance, aligning water molecules, and lowering the proton transfer barrier. Conversely, electron-donating –CH 3 groups deplete the electron cloud density in the –SO 3 H region, disrupting proton transport pathways. The MIL-53-SO 3 H-F nanosheet achieves an intrinsic proton conductivity of 298.3 mS cm −1 at 80 °C and 98% RH, a 4.5-fold increase over MIL-53-SO 3 H-CH 3 nanosheets (65.5 mS cm −1 ), as measured by the comb electrode. The corresponding lamellar membrane delivers a high peak power density of 734.8 mW cm −2 and remains stable for over 100 h in H 2 /O 2 PEM fuel cells (PEMFCs).

Photo-assisted flexible supercapacitors have emerged as transformative power solutions by integrating with solar photoirradiation-enhanced capacity (PIEC) to improve energy storage performance. However, the photogenerated carrier recombination and structural instability of existing metal oxides and carbon-based photoelectrodes hinder enhancement of PIEC performance in flexible supercapacitors for wearable electronics. Herein, we propose a dynamic bonding strategy to construct a core-shell covalent organic framework/MXene heterostructure (COF-316-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) with engineered heterointerfaces for flexible photo-enhanced micro-supercapacitors (FPMSCs). This method facilitates the oriented growth of covalent organic framework-316 (COF-316) on a Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheet to form a core-shell heterostructure by anchoring monomers. Theoretical calculations and experiments reveal that the built-in electric field modulation accelerates photogenerated electron transfer and suppresses charge recombination (carrier lifetime is doubled). The core-shell heterostructure endows the realization of FPMSCs with enhanced mechano-electrochemical stability, including 180° bending stability and 97.5% of capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles.

Myocardial ischemia (MI), caused by insufficient blood supply, is a pathological condition where cardiomyocytes lack oxygen and energy supply. Herein, we developed a natural photosynthetic system (HCU) consisting of chlorella pyrenoidosa ( C. pyre ), hyaluronic acid methacryloyl (HAMA) and degradable upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs, NaCeF 4 :Yb,Tm,Zr). Upon near-infrared irradiation, HCU was photo-crosslinked in situ, thereby facilitating C. pyre photosynthetic oxygen generation within the myocardium. Concurrently, cytochrome c oxidase (CCO) in mitochondria was activated to enhance electron transport along the respiratory chain, synergistically boosting cardiac energy metabolism. Consequently, the ATP levels were elevated, and the hypoxic microenvironment was mitigated. In MI mouse models, echocardiography readings returned to normal levels, and the infarct size was significantly reduced following a 7-day treatment with HCU. Based on the photosynthetic system, this study proposes an in situ oxygen and energy metabolic regulation strategy for MI, holding certain inspiration for other ischemia diseases.
