Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation (PNF) under mild conditions is a promising approach to sustainable ammonia (NH 3 ) synthesis. However, PNF normally encounters many challenges, such as inefficient charge separation, poorly exposed active sites, and sluggish multi-electron/proton-involved steps. Here, we design a step (S)-scheme WS 2-x /La 1 -WO 2.9 heterojunction through integrating rich oxygen/sulfur dual-vacancies and loading rare-earth La single atoms. The as-prepared photocatalyst achieves a high NH 3 generation rate of 124.9 μmol∙g −1 ∙h −1 , which is 4.4, 1.7 and 1.2-fold those of pristine WO 3-x , WS 2-x and WS 2-x /WO 2.9 , respectively. Further in-depth characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal a synergistic photocatalytic effect in WS 2-x /La 1 -WO 2.9 , mainly due to the regulated collaborative dual defects and a lower energy d −π* occupation orbital from the modulation of La-modified W site. This leads to significantly reducing the reaction barrier in the rate-limiting step and elucidating the key intermediate processes (-NH 2 , -NH 2 NH 2 ) of the nitrogen fixation reaction. Our study creates a comprehensive strategy, analogous to the “three birds with one stone” method, offering new insights into advancing PNF.

Integrating photocatalysis with adsorption represents an efficient approach to improving the removal performance of organic contaminants from aqueous environments. To address the issues of severe charge recombination and poor adsorption activity in TiO2photocatalysts during the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. In this study, we used macroporous resin as a carrier and prepared La/N-doped TiO2/macroporous resin composite materials (La/N/TiO2-MAR) via a hydrothermal-assisted sol–gel method. The results show that the composite material has a spherical morphology. N can be doped into the TiO2crystal, while La3+remains on the surface of TiO2without entering the crystal lattice. La/N/TiO2-MAR demonstrates a higher specific surface area and enhanced light absorption capacity, which facilitates both adsorption and photocatalytic degradation. At the La3+doping concentration of 0.05 M, La0.05/N/TiO2-MAR demonstrates optimal photocatalytic degradation performance, achieving an 85.36% removal rate of Rhodamine B after 240 min of visible-light exposure.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are a type of frequently reported emerging pollutant that affects plant growth. The harm caused by continuous exposure to low-dose REEs has rarely been studied. Quickly, accurately, and non-invasively monitoring the continuous influence of low-dose REEs on plant growth in situ is key to indicating and warning of its harm to plants and ecosystems. In this study, after continuous exposure to low-dose lanthanum [La(III), a REE] for 14 days, invisible damage occurred in leaf cells, and La accumulated continuously in the soybean plants (leaves > stems > roots > pods > seeds), causing potential human health risks. Two proteins [vitronectin-like protein (VN) and arabinogalactan proteins (AGP)] in leaf cells that bound La(III) were selected as biomarkers, and changes in these two proteins were detected by constructing dual-sensors in living leaf cells after continuous exposure to low-dose La(III) for 14 days. The results showed that the electrochemical outputs from leaf cells–the electron transfer resistance R et (VN) and R et (AGP)–were related to the damage indices such as MDA, chlorophyll content, electrolyte leakage, cell vitality, fresh and dry weight of leaves, and leaf area. Using this output, two warning intervals of visible damage were obtained: R et (VN) was 8.53 %–47.22 %, and R et (AGP) was 12.75 %–51.31 %. This study successfully demonstrated the real-time in situ detection of plant cell biomarker changes and invisible damage under low-dose La(III) exposure, providing methods for early warning monitoring of plant damage caused by low-dose continuous exposure to REEs.

To solve the problem of tendon adhesion after an operation, an anti-adhesion membrane is designed, which can inhibit the exogenous healing of tendons and promote endogenous healing. Here, poly[3(S)-methyl-morpholine-2,5-dione- co -lactic acid] P(MMD- co -LA) containing alanine units is obtained by melt ring-opening polymerization (ROP). It can effectively reduce the production of acidic degradation products that cause aseptic inflammation. Then a kind of oriented P(MMD- co -LA)/deferoxamine (DFO) anti-adhesion membrane with good mechanical properties, cell adhesion properties, and induced macrophage polarization properties is constructed by electrospinning. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that oriented fibrous membranes can down-regulate the expression of inflammatory cytokines. In addition, the fibrous membrane can up-regulate the expression of angiogenesis-related genes, namely HIF1-α, SDF-1α, and VEGF, by releasing DFO in situ, thus promoting the revascularization of tendon defects and providing nutritional support for endogenous tendon healing. This method provides a new barrier strategy to reduce tendon adhesion through anti-inflammation combined with vascularization to inhibit exogenous tendon healing while promoting tendon endogenous healing. The results provide essential insights into the corresponding regulation of the tendon healing microenvironment.

A novel composite double-layer film was developed using TiO 2 /La(OH) 3 :Yb 3+ /Er 3+ nanoparticles (P25/UC) and porous-hollow TiO 2 microspheres (PHTS) for highly efficient dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). P25/UC was used as the first layer and coated onto fluorine-doped tin oxide glass substrate to create a good contact and upconversion effect. The P25/UC layer can absorb and convert infrared light into visible red and green light, increasing light utilization. PHTS has a large size and a high specific surface area, was deposited onto the surface of the P25/UC film to improve the light scattering performance and dye adsorption of solar cells. The P25/UC composite double-layer film (P25/UC + PHTS) achieved the highest short-circuit current density of 20.33 mA/cm 2 and photoelectron conversion efficiency of 8.89% due to the synergistic effect of the upconversion layers and light-scattering layers, which increased by 51.26% and 38.04% compared with that of the pure P25 film photoelectrode.

Driven by the urgent demand for efficient CO elimination from fire-derived toxic smoke, CuO coupled with a redox-active CeO₂ support and La promoter has attracted attention as a robust and low-cost composite-oxide catalyst for CO oxidation under harsh conditions. In this study , the effect of La/Ce molar ratios and doping strategies on the structure and catalytic properties of metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived catalysts were systematically investigated, aiming to construct dual-metal synergistic systems with boosted CO oxidation efficiency. By precisely regulating synthesis parameters (temperature, solvent, and precursor concentration), MOF-derived catalysts with tailored crystal frameworks, hierarchical pore structures, and optimized surface chemistry were successfully fabricated. The physicochemical properties and catalytic behaviors were correlated via complementary characterizations, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were combined to reveal the intrinsic catalytic mechanisms. This integrated strategy clarified how dual-metal synergy governs CO adsorption, activation, and conversion over a broad temperature range. Ultimately, this work provides a rational design strategy for high-performance CO oxidation catalysts and highlights the potential of La-doped MOF-derived CeO₂/CuO catalysts for fire-smoke purification.

Novel linker-based La-containing Mg-MOF synthesized for phosphate removal. • Hexagonal rod-like La-containing Mg-MOF provides abundant active adsorption sites. • Ultrahigh phosphate adsorption capacity (448.59 mg g −1 ) via Langmuir model. • La-containing Mg-MOF shows high stability and strong anion resistance. • DFT and polynomial regression-based study of phosphate adsorption. A porous hexagonal rod-like La-containing Mg-MOF was rationally designed and fabricated via a controlled hydrothermal route to achieve efficient phosphate removal from aqueous media. The introduction of La 3+ and Mg 2+ generated a La-containing Mg-MOF with enhanced surface reactivity and abundant adsorption sites. Structural and surface characterization using FTIR, SEM-EDS, BET, and XPS suggested the successful formation of the La-containing Mg-MOF, its mesoporous architecture, and effective integration of both metal sites. Adsorption experiments demonstrated high phosphate uptake, strong selectivity, and stable performance over a broad pH range and in the presence of competing anions. Kinetic analysis indicated that the adsorption process followed pseudo second-order behavior, suggesting surface site-controlled adsorption. Thermodynamic evaluation revealed that phosphate adsorption was spontaneous, endothermic, and entropy-driven. Isotherm modeling showed excellent agreement with the Langmuir model, yielding adsorption capacity of 448.59 mg g −1 . Mechanistic insights derived from density functional theory calculation, FTIR and XPS analyses revealed that phosphate removal occurred through a synergistic combination of outer sphere electrostatic interactions and inner-sphere complexation involving ligand exchange and coordination with La-containing active sites. Furthermore, polynomial regression fitting models were applied to investigate the quantitative relationships between phosphate adsorption capacity and experimental parameters such as pH, initial concentration, contact time, adsorbent dosage, and solution volume, achieving R 2 values above 0.98. These results demonstrate La-containing Mg-MOF are highly promising candidates as next-generation adsorbents for efficient phosphate removal in water treatment systems. The inner walls of semiconductor processing chambers are susceptible to corrosion and failure under prolonged exposure to harsh environments. Applying protective ceramic coatings can effectively suppress plasma-induced erosion. This work focuses on high-hardness Y 3 Al 5 O 12 (YAG) ceramics. By introducing La–O bonds, the interfacial strength and corrosion resistance of the coatings are enhanced. A low‑temperature co‑precipitation method combined with liquid‑phase coating was employed to fabricate composite powders of (Y 0.7 La 0.3 ) 2 O 3 @Al 2 O 3 (YLAO) and (Y 0.7 La 0.3 ) 2 O 2 F 2 @Al 2 O 3 (YLAFO) for YAG ceramic coatings, effectively suppressing the differential interfacial reactions between Y and La. The YLAFO coatings exhibit a dense microstructure with uniform elemental distribution. Under NF 3 /O 2 /Ar mixed‑plasma etching conditions, the coating shows an etching rate of only 2.81 nm/min, representing an approximately 88% improvement in erosion resistance compared to Y 2 O 3 ‑derived (YO) YAG coatings. This work demonstrates that coating performance can be enhanced through compositional design and process control, providing a feasible solution for protecting semiconductor etching components.

In this work, new high-entropy RE 2 (Ce 0.2 Zr 0.2 Hf 0.2 Sn 0.2 Ti 0.2 ) 2 O 7 (RE 2 HE 2 O 7 , RE = La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy) ceramics were successfully prepared. RE 2 HE 2 O 7 ceramics exhibited a pyrochlore–fluorite dual-phase structure. For Sm 2 HE 2 O 7 ceramic, Ce 4+ with larger ionic radius was enriched in the fluorite phase, Sn 4+ and Ti 4+ with smaller ionic radii were enriched in the pyrochlore phase, while Zr 4+ and Hf 4+ with medium ionic radii existed in both phases. Compared with YSZ materials, RE 2 HE 2 O 7 ceramics exhibited a much lower glass-like thermal conductivity (1.19–1.68 W m −1 K −1 , 100–900 °C) and comparable thermal expansion coefficients (8.67–10.85 × 10 −6 K −1 , 1200 °C). Furthermore, due to grain refinement caused by the competition of two phases, the Vickers hardness (10.29–13.85 GPa) of RE 2 HE 2 O 7 ceramics is improved. The results indicate that dual-phase high-entropy RE 2 HE 2 O 7 ceramics are promising candidate materials for the next generation of thermal barrier coatings.

In this study, La(OH) 3 -modified magnetic sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (La-MC) was prepared as adsorbents for phosphate, which exhibited excellent adsorption performance up to 62.98 mg P/g and magnetic property for easy recovery. The recovered adsorbents after phosphate sorption were subsequently used for photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) and possessed good photocatalytic activity. This work provided an excellent reference for developing a new way of extending life cycle of adsorbents by combining phosphate adsorption with photocatalysis for sequential removal of pollutants from water in the future.

Phosphate and fluoride are primary culprits of water eutrophication and skeleton fluorosis, respectively, severely threatening the security of aquatic lives and public health. To deal with the aqueous phosphate and fluoride pollution, PC@La nanocomposites were tailor-designed based on low-cost periclase and lanthanum salt via a facile urea hydrothermal method. Results from SEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS analysis revealed the PC@La-1.0 was constructed by Mg-La bimetal carbonated hydroxides with the three-dimensional needle-like nanostructure. Highly effective adsorption capacities for both phosphate (107.34 mg/g) and fluoride (63.11 mg/g) were achieved by PC@La-1.0. The adsorption was pH-dependent, and the optimal pH values for adsorption was 4.0–6.0. Over 80% of initial adsorption capacities remained after four adsorption–desorption cycles, indicating its satisfactory reusability. Superior adsorption selectivity for phosphate and fluoride was proven when co-existing with common ions and organics in solutions and real sewage. Mechanism analysis revealed that the unique structure of Mg-La bimetal carbonate hydroxide structure of PC@La-1.0 promoted an accumulative anion adsorption performance. Mg and La cations on PC@La-1.0 formed strong inner-sphere complexation with target phosphate and fluoride while the internal carbonate and hydroxyl groups contributed to adsorption via ion exchange. This study highlights the novel low-cost method to prepare promising candidates for efficient dephosphorization and defluorination from water.

In this work, two novel CaASbWO 8 (A = Gd, La; named CGSWO and CLSWO) microwave dielectric ceramics were synthesized by a classical solid-state method. Remarkably, the outstanding microwave dielectric properties ( ε r = 12.97, Q×f = 45,034 GHz, and τ f = −16.29 ppm/°C) were achieved for CGSWO ceramics sintered at 1440 °C, and CLSWO ceramics sintered at 1300 °C possessed the excellent microwave dielectric properties of ε r = 9.89, Q×f = 61,326 GHz, and τ f = 0.55 ppm/°C. Bond valence, ionic polarizability, Raman spectroscopy and Phillips–Vechten–Levine (P-V-L) theory were used to study the internal lattice vibration and chemical bonds in detail, and the dielectric properties were explored from the internal factors. In comparison to the ε r , the ε theo of CGSWO was found to be consistently underestimated, whereas CLSWO exhibited a contrasting pattern. This discrepancy was primarily attributed to the rattling and compressed effects of A-site cation. According to the analysis of P-V-L theory, W-O bond played an important role in regulating the Q×f value. Moreover, the τ f values of CGSWO and CLSWO ceramics were opposite, which provided an opportunity to manufacture microwave ceramic devices with good temperature stability.
