Super-reinforced photothermal stability of cellulose nanofibrils films by armour-type ordered doping Mg-Al layered double hydroxides

Lilong Zhang,Keli Chen,Liang He

A strategy to realize a reinforced photothermal stability cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) films was reported. The LDHs were dispersed homogeneously onto the active site of CNFs surface by electrostatic self-assembly and the Mg/Al LDHs armour-type nanofibrils were prepared. After simple vacuum filtration, this kind nanofibrils can fabricate highly ordered multilayer film. Suitable amount of additive can bring outstanding photo-thermal property. The visible-light transmittance of the composite films can reach to c.a 80.0% when addition was 0.1% wt. and folding strength of the films contained 0.5% wt LDHs can increased by 15 times. The strength and the light transmittancevery of composite films was also higher than the pure nanocellulose film with the photothermal radiometry for about 30 h under 60 °C drying condition. The production is simple and highly repeatable process could be a good reference for preparation of high photothermal stability and transparent CNFs-based thin films.

Mg-Based Metal–Organic Framework-Modified MXene Nanozymes as a Comprehensive Therapeutic for Rotator Cuff Tear with Osteoporosis

Douhui Guo,Jing Ye,Changxiong Cai,Ting Xiong,Xueqiang Deng,Yaqi Hua,Wenqi Duan,Chen Li,Liang Hao

Rotator cuff tears (RCT) are one of the most common causes of shoulder joint pain and mobility disorders affecting the health of middle-aged and elderly patients. Although the arthroscopic repair can effectively suture the torn rotator cuff, the retear rate is still high, especially for patients with osteoporosis. Excessive oxidative stress, uncontrolled inflammatory infiltration Bone mass reduction, muscle atrophy, and fatty infiltration would gradually aggravate during the development of RCT, which would seriously hinder the effective repair of the repaired rotator cuff after arthroscopic surgery. Herein, a novel nanozyme-based drug delivery system Nb 2 C@Mg-MOF/Pluronic F127 (NMP) consisting of niobium carbide (Nb 2 C), magnesium metal–organic framework (Mg-MOF), and a temperature-sensitive hydrogel (Pluronic F127) was developed for effective regulation of inflammation and orderly regeneration of various tissues from bone to muscle. The in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that NM (Nb 2 C@Mg-MOF) has excellent anti-inflammatory properties. It could actively promote various tissue regeneration, including osteogenesis, inhibition of osteoclastogenesis, myogenesis, inhibit fatty infiltration and angiogenesis. This nanozyme-based drug delivery system plays an effective role in promoting healing in the complex repair process of rotator cuff tears with osteoporosis, which would provide new insights and a promising strategy for treating of osteoporotic rotator cuff tears.

3D-printed shape memory scaffolds from Pickering emulsion for codelivery of exosomes and Mg²⁺ to promote bone regeneration

Jingguang Wang,Zhenze Xie,Nantian Duan,Tao Wang,Chang Du

Repairing critical-sized bone defects, particularly those with irregular geometries, remains a significant clinical challenge. Stem cell-derived exosomes have been shown to promote bone defect repair. However, effective encapsulation and delivery of exosomes are still not well solved. To address this, we developed a composite bioink by encapsulating exosomes within a Pickering emulsion system (Water in oil. Water phase: MgO/exosomes; Oil phase: hydroxyapatite/silica/Poly (D, L-lactide-co-trimethylene carbonate)). This bioink was used to fabricate an exosome-laden MgO composite scaffold (PHS/MgO-EXO) via 3D printing. The PHS/MgO-EXO scaffold featured an excellent hierarchical interconnecting porous structure, capable of sustained release of Mg²⁺ ions and exosomes, which collectively promoted cell proliferation, adhesion, and osteogenic differentiation. Notably, the scaffold exhibited an excellent shape memory effect, enabling it to achieve conformal fitting and repair of irregular defects upon external stimulation. Moreover, the PHS/MgO-EXO scaffold could promote the repair and regeneration of bone defect in rat skull defect experiment. Transcriptome analyses revealed the mechanism: the PHS/MgO-EXO scaffold regulated the osteogenic differentiation of mBMSCs through the Hippo signaling pathways, and promoted tissue regeneration by modulating the immune response through the TNF-α and IL-17 pathways. Taken together, this PHS/MgO-EXO scaffold with shape memory properties can release exosomes and sustain the release of Mg²⁺ ions, which will provide a highly promising strategy for clinical repair of irregular bone defects.

Efficient and Stable Magnesium Plating/Stripping in High-Capacity Novel Mg//Ni0.6Co0.4Se2 Batteries Enabled by Interfacial Chemistry Modulation

Zhihong Cui,Peng Chen,Yuping Liu,Lu Zhang,Jingna Nie,Bo Shang,Changguo Chen,Guangsheng Huang,Dingfei Zhang,Fusheng Pan

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) are considered as a potential rechargeable for replacing or assisting lithium metal batteries (LMBs). The Mg anode is prone to experiencing a native oxide layer in most electrolytes, resulting in an inferior overpotential and irreversible Mg plating/stripping behavior. Herein, we report for the first time that a novel Mg battery can be assembled using a non-nucleophilic Mg(HMDS)2-based electrolyte with I2 in a relatively large solvent molecule diglyme. An artificial interface phase of MgI2 was constructed in Mg(HMDS)2-AlCl3 electrolyte through the reaction of oxidant I2 and reductant Mg foil. This artificial interface phase is less sensitive to the electrolyte composition. The electrolyte decomposition and the Mg side reaction are effectively inhibited by the MgI2 interphase. In-situ MgI2 interphase significantly lessens the interface impedance and overpotential of the electrochemical Mg deposition/dissolution process. More importantly, the overpotential of the cell using Mg(HMDS)2-2AlCl3- I2/G2 electrolyte is decreased to 0.10 V vs Mg2+/Mg with high Coulombic efficiency of ∼99%, which is superior to the recently reported Mg(HMDS)2-based electrolytes. Besides, the first-principles calculations demonstrate that Mg is uniformly deposited on the MgI2 surface due to reversible Mg plating/stripping, low overpotential, and long-term cycle performance. Note that the as-fabricated novel Ni0.6Co0.4Se2|Mg(HMDS)2-AlCl3- I2/G2|Mg full battery delivers an initial specific capacity of 186 mAh g–1, and retains 120 mAh g–1 with Coulombic efficiency of 100% after 100 cycles. The novel Mg battery verifies the availability of the Mg(HMDS)2-AlCl3- I2/G2 electrolyte through electrolyte additive engineering. The high capacity and stable as-assembled Mg//Ni0.6Co0.4Se2 full cell confirms the compatibility of Mg(HMDS)2 and I2 as well as the utility of modified electrolyte and diselenides cathode materials in RMBs.

Investigation on melt growth (Mg, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn)O oxide ceramics prepared by laser directed energy deposition

Dongjiang Wu,Weijie Lv,Zheng Li,Xuexin Yu,Cong Zhou,Bi Zhang,Wei Wang,Huanyue Zhang,Guangyi Ma,Fangyong Niu

High-entropy oxides (HEOs) have attracted extensive research interest due to their unique structural features, customizable elemental compositions, and tunable functional properties. Nevertheless, the complexity, low efficiency, and high cost of the existing HEO synthesis methods place limitations on them. In this study, Laser directed energy deposition (LDED) was employed to synthesize (Mg, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn)O oxides. Additionally, the novelty of applying the LDED process to multicationic systems was emphasized. The comparison between specimens fabricated from mixed powder via LDED(MP) and those fabricated from pre-sintered powder via LDED(SP) encompasses macroscopic morphology, microstructure, and performance. The results showed that SP significantly enhanced the density from 86.44 % to 96.70 % compared to MP. The macro-segregation of Cu and Cu 2 O in the phase composition was observed in MP and SP. High-temperature pre-sintering promoted the solid solution formation of Co and Ni during LDED, leading to more severe micro-segregation of Co and Ni. When employed as anodes in lithium-ion batteries, MP and SP have outstanding long-term cycle stability, according to electrochemical performance studies. At a current density of 100 mAg −1 , these specimens maintained a capacity retention rate of 100 % even after 200 cycles. The initial discharge capacities of MP and SP were respectively 477.73 mAh g −1 and 373.86 mAh g −1 . This study is expected to present a novel approach for the rapid synthesis of (Mg, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn)O oxide ceramics .

Guanidyl-incorporated nanofiltration membrane with high performance in Mg/Li separation by in situ nanobubble cooperation with polymerization

Tong Zhang,Qiaoying Wang,Bingbing Zhang,Zhichao Wu,Zhiwei Wang

Inspired by the simultaneous increase of permeability and selectivity by introducing nanobubbles by physical methods, this study firstly proposed a in situ chemical nanobubbles controlled guanidyl-incorporated double layer nanofiltration (NF) membrane for Mg/Li separation in salt-lake brine. As a bridge, 1,3-diaminoguanidine released nanobubbles rapidly and uniformly by pH control while polymerizing with trimesoyl chloride (TMC) during interfacial polymerization, followed by polyethyleneimine (PEI) secondary reaction, which effectively changed the solute transportation to obtain the shortest pathways in horizontal and normal directions. Compared with conventional PEI-TMC membrane, the water flux of guanidyl-incorporated PEI (G-PEI) membrane was obviously increased by 54.28% while separation factor of Li/Mg ( S Li/Mg ) enhanced by 63.27% in the initial 1 h, indicating chemical nanobubble interlayer effectively broke Trade-off effect by increasing the effective filtration area. In the long-term operation, G-PEI-NF membrane exhibited an excellent S Li/Mg of >60, low mass rate of Mg 2+ and Li + (MLR) of 0.31 and Li + purity of >75% with the stable flux of 19–20 L/(m 2 ·h). This study expected to provide a novel chemical nanobubble interlayer NF membrane with high filtration performance for Mg/Li separation in salt-lake brine.

Enhanced mechanical and microwave dielectric performances of Mg(Al0.5Ga0.5Ti0.5Zn0.25Mg0.25)O4 high-entropy ceramic for C-band antenna applications

Kaibin Li,Jie Li,Ning Zhang,Xiaolong Gu,Ying Tang,Liang Fang

High-entropy Mg(Mg 0.25 Zn 0.25 Ga 0.5 Ti 0.5 Al 0.5 )O 4 ceramics with disordered spinel structure were prepared at 1420-1500 °C. When sintered at 1480 °C, Mg(Mg 0.25 Zn 0.25 Ga 0.5 Ti 0.5 Al 0.5 )O 4 ceramics exhibited extremely high Q×f of 105,800 ± 300 GHz, improved τ f of –45.3 ± 0.01 ppm/°C, and low ε r of 11.5 ± 0.1, with favorable H v and flexural strength of 11.43 ± 0.01 GPa and 128.1 ± 0.1 MPa, respectively, which were 23.3% and 31.7% higher than those of MgAl 2 O 4 . The measured ε r of Mg(Mg 0.25 Zn 0.25 Ga 0.5 Ti 0.5 Al 0.5 )O 4 ceramics was substantially higher than the calculated εᵣ (C-M) (9.9), due to the underestimated Ti 4+ polarizability and rattling effect. The improved τ f was caused by the decreased τ ε and increased Gibbs free energy. The 1.5 times increase in Q × f stemmed from the increased packing fraction and lattice energy, lowered σ AC , enhanced E a and covalency factor. A cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna was designed with Mg(Mg 0.25 Zn 0.25 Ga 0.5 Ti 0.5 Al 0.5 )O 4 high-entropy ceramic, which can fulfill the communication demands of high-frequency and high-power applications.

A self-supplying NO coating coupled with HA@CS nanoparticles on ZE21B Mg alloy for accelerating re-endothelialization

Zhaoqi Zhang,Qian Ji,Hongfei Zhang,Heng Liu,Lei Zhao,Mengna Zhang,Lu Chen,Qian Li,Shaokang Guan

Poly(TA-Arg) coating with self-supplying NO fabricated via ethanol-water system. • Poly(TA-Arg) sample possesses a low degradation rate. • HA@CS nanoparticles synthesized with optimal HA:CS ratio. • HA@CS sample promotes endothelialization via PI3K-Akt-eNOS and Nrf2 pathways. Rapid degradation and inadequate re-endothelialization hinder the clinical application of biodegradable magnesium (Mg) alloy stents, while thrombosis and bacterial colonization further compromise early implant performance. To address these challenges, a hierarchical bilayer coating, consisting of an inner poly(α-thioctic acid)-L-arginine (Poly(TA-Arg)) layer and an outer hyaluronic acid/chitosan (HA@CS) nanoparticle layer (particle size, ∼240 nm), was fabricated on a fluorinated ZE21B Mg alloy. The Poly(TA-Arg) layer supported endothelial cell (EC)-mediated endogenous nitric oxide (NO) production. It also provided strong interfacial adhesion and corrosion protection, reducing the corrosion current density to 5.60 × 10 −8 A cm −2 . The HA@CS layer exhibited antioxidant activity, prolonged clotting time, low hemolysis, and > 99% antibacterial efficacy, as determined by plate counting. The bilayer coating promoted EC proliferation while inhibiting smooth muscle cell growth. RNA sequencing suggested that the pro-endothelialization effect was associated with PI3K-Akt- endothelial nitric oxide synthase-related signaling and an Nrf2-related antioxidant response. In a rat abdominal aorta model, the coated wire was surrounded by a thin, well-organized neointima with endothelial coverage, minimal inflammation, and no evident thrombosis. No obvious histopathological abnormalities were observed in major organs, and hematological parameters remained within normal ranges. This multifunctional coating provides a potential strategy for improving the vascular compatibility of biodegradable Mg stents. Milk of lime precipitation of Mg-rich nickel laterite leachate for reactive MgO preparation and potential internal reuse

Yanjuan Zhang,Yadong Ning,Yu Wang,Zhanhe Zhang,Zhengyan Liu,Zhihui Yu,Jingkui Qu

Continuous Mg 2+ accumulation during hydrochloric acid leaching of nickel laterite ore causes magnesium loss and increases the burden of saline wastewater treatment. In this study, magnesium was recovered from Mg-rich leachate as reactive MgO by precipitation using milk of lime followed by calcination. Simulated MgCl 2 -rich solutions revealed the concentration-dependent precipitation behavior. At low Mg 2+ concentrations, Mg(OH) 2 formed mainly through direct precipitation and produced dense lamellar precursors. At Mg 2+ concentrations of 30 g/L and above, CaMg 2 Cl 6 ·12 H 2 O was detected as a transient chloride-containing double salt during the early precipitation stage, and honeycomb-like porous Mg(OH) 2 precursors were obtained after washing. Calcination of the precursor produced MgO with improved citric acid activity (CAA). The optimized process was validated using purified Mg-rich leachate, achieving a stoichiometry-based Mg precipitation efficiency of 95.47% and producing MgO with approximately 98 wt% purity. The synthesized MgO showed CAA of 22.52 ± 1.19 s, a specific surface area of 60.75 m 2 /g, and Fe removal performance comparable to commercial MgO, supporting its potential internal reuse as a pH adjustment reagent in hydrochloric acid leaching processes.

Structural evolution and dielectric properties of (Ce, Mg, Ca)-co-doped BaTiO3 ceramics for potential X8R capacitor applications

Baoyong Huang,Xiuyun Zhang,Jianwei Song,Yijie Zeng,Yuyang Tang,Yiqi Sang,Yunyun Zhao,Guisheng Zhu,Laijun liu,Huarui Xu

The microstructure engineering of BaTiO 3 -based ceramic systems serves as an essential prerequisite to attain superior dielectric stability and reliability in modern multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). In this study, the effects of Ca doping on phase composition, microstructure, defect evolution, and dielectric temperature stability were systematically investigated in a novel BaTiO 3 -1 at%CeO 2 -3 at%MgO- x at%CaCO 3 ( x = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8) ceramic system. The results show that Ca doping promotes the tetragonality of the structure to increase first and then decrease. The addition of Ca 2+ changed the original defect composition of the ceramics: Ca 2+ promotes the conversion of Ce 3+ to Ce 4+ , reduces the reduction of Ti 4+ , and regulates the concentration of oxygen vacancies. The addition of Ca 2+ reduces the grain boundary activation energy ( 1.86 eV to 1.33 eV ), and reduces the carrier concentration to improve the ceramic resistivity. Ca 2+ promotes the enrichment of doped ions at the grain boundary to form a ' core-shell ' structure, which is characterized by broadened and suppressed dielectric peaks. When x = 6 at %, the ceramics meet the X8R specification (|( C T - C 25°C )/ C 25°C ×100%| ≤ 15%, T ∈ [-55°C, 150°C]), the dielectric constant at room temperature is 2802, and the dielectric loss is less than 0.02. This study reveals the Ca 2+ induced multi-ion synergistic regulation mechanism, which provides an experimental basis for the development of high stability and low loss lead-free MLCC dielectric materials that meet the X8R standard.

Fe/Mg co-doped MoS2 nanoflowers with synergistically enhanced piezo-Fenton performance for ultrasonic degradation of organic pollutants

Rui Li,Xinyi Wang,Ying Gao,Yongchao Liu,Li Li,Shiliu Yang,Min Guo

Fe/Mg co-doped MoS 2 nanoflowers were prepared by a hydrothermal method. • Mg doping enlarged the MoS 2 interlayer spacing and enhanced piezo-response. • Mg enhanced H 2 O 2 adsorption on Fe sites and strengthened Fenton activity. • ·OH was confirmed as the dominant species for tetracycline degradation. • 5% Fe 3 Mg 1 -MoS 2 achieved 97.8% TC removal and 95.1% after six cycles. Pristine MoS 2 shows promise for piezo-Fenton degradation of organic pollutants, yet its weak piezoelectric response and sluggish surface reaction kinetics severely limit catalytic efficiency. Herein, Fe/Mg co-doped MoS 2 nanoflowers were prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method, and the Fe/Mg ratio was adjusted to construct a catalyst with both piezoelectric response and Fenton activity. Among the samples, 5% Fe 3 Mg 1 -MoS 2 exhibited the best performance. Under ultrasound alone, it degraded 71.9% of tetracycline within 60 min, with an apparent rate constant of 0.0213 min −1 . In the ultrasound/H 2 O 2 system, the degradation efficiency increased to 97.8%, and the rate constant reached 0.0620 min −1 , about 4.0 times that of p-MoS 2 . Structural and surface chemical analyses showed that Mg enlarged the MoS 2 interlayer spacing, induced local lattice distortion, and promoted fewer-layer structures, providing favorable structural conditions for the piezoelectric response under ultrasound. Fe species provided Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox sites and promoted H 2 O 2 activation. Radical scavenging and fluorescence tests indicated that ·OH was the dominant reactive species in the ultrasound/H 2 O 2 system, while ·O 2 - and h + also participated in degradation. DFT calculations further showed that Mg neighboring Fe sites enhanced H 2 O 2 adsorption on Fe sites and regulated the local charge distribution. This study demonstrates that Fe/Mg co-doping improves the piezo-Fenton catalytic performance of MoS 2 through structural regulation and electronic coupling, offering guidance for efficient MoS 2 -based catalysts. Download: Download high-res image (350KB) Download: Download full-size image Fe/Mg co-doped MoS 2 nanoflowers were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method and achieved 97.8% tetracycline degradation within 60 min, with a rate constant 4.0 times that of p-MoS 2 .

Transition metal-mediated mechanochemical synthesis of size-tunable Mg nanograins with optimized thermodynamics and kinetics for hydrogen storage

Yulong Li,Zhijie Xie,Hai-Wen Li,Yongtao Li

Magnesium-based hydrides offer high hydrogen capacity but are often limited by sluggish sorption kinetics and high thermodynamic stability. Herein, transition metal-mediated reactive ball milling (RBM) was adopted to prepare Mg nanograins, with the synergistic size and strain effects for improving kinetics and thermodynamics. Mn, Ti, and Zr were evaluated as milling additives under identical RBM conditions. Mn induces the most pronounced grain refinement where the obtained Mg nanograins exhibit an estimated average characteristic size of ∼45 nm uniformly dispersed within a Mn matrix. The optimized Mg 0.25 Mn 0.75 composites show a better dehydrogenation with onset temperature of 170 °C, accompanied by an apparent activation energy of 110.25 kJ mol −1 and a desorption enthalpy of 73.40 kJ mol −1 H 2 . It reaches a Mg-normalized H 2 absorption capacity of 5.97 wt% at 25 °C and 4.0 MPa in just 11 min, with maintaining capacity of 93% after 50 cycles.
