Xu Ting,Wang Yaxuan,Liu Kun,Zhao Qingshuang,Liang Qidi,Zhang Meng,Si Chuanling

With the depletion of fossil resources and the gradual intensification of environmental pollution, green and sustainable electrochemical devices have aroused intensive attraction. The supercapacitor, demonstrating fast charging rate, high power densities, and long cycling life, has great application prospects in high power output and backup power supply. Herein, an ultralight and robust MXene/carbon nanotube aerogel is constructed by facile directional freezing and subsequent freeze-drying. Benefiting from the strongly π-π interactions between MXene nanosheets and carbon nanotube, the assembled MXene/carbon nanotube composite aerogel exhibits abundant pore structures, superior conductivity, and good mechanical properties. The electrical conductivity of MXene/carbon nanotube aerogel is up to 1600 S m −1 . The MXene/carbon nanotube aerogel can be subjected to 70% compressive strain and retain 85% initial strain over 1000 compress-release cycles. The as-prepared all-solid-state supercapacitor with MXene/carbon nanotube aerogel shows outstanding electrochemical performance (410.7 mF cm −2 at the current density of 0.8 mA cm −2 ). The supercapacitor is flexible and can be bent from 0 to 90° as the cyclic voltammetry curves are almost consistent. Furthermore, the LED can be lighted by four devices in series.

Jiawang Hu,Dong Liu,Xuanjie Xia,Bin Wang,Donglei Pan,Yifan Cheng,Yuan Lu

Human identification is crucial in many fields. However, it is challenging to achieve instant and accurate human identification through body odors. In this work, an in-situ growth strategy was utilized to establish a gas-sensitive nanocomposite material library with MXene and perovskite . A plug-and-play bionic sensor array module based on the material library was manufactured and assembled into an instant detection platform (IDP). Machine learning (ML) algorithms were introduced to assist IDP in identifying human odors. Due to its unique Schottky Barrier structure, the material library exhibited higher performance and responded 37 % ∼ 70 % higher than initial MXene. IDP was applied to detect the odors of volunteers’ breaths and clothes with an accuracy rate of 69.2 % and 51.1 %, respectively, with the assistance of ML. In all, an instant, convenient, and accurate human identification prototype machine was fabricated, providing a general solution for more complex application scenarios.

Yanxiang Liu,Yuanlin Li,Aijun Li,Yu Gao,Xiao-Feng Wang,Ritsuko Fujii,Shin-ichi Sasaki

MXenes, a new family of 2D nanostructured materials , have been widely studied in the field of artificial photosynthesis due to their outstanding physicochemical properties. In this work, a series of 2,4-bis[4-( N , N -dibutylamino)phenyl] squaraine ( SQ ) derivatives with different number of hydroxyl groups were hybridized with Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets , and the organic–inorganic hybrid photocatalysts were applied for water-splitting hydrogen evolution . The mass ratios of SQ @Ti 3 C 2 T x were optimized to 4 wt% for each SQ , and the best hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) rate of 28.6 μmol h −1 g −1 was achieved by SQ-3 with four OH groups. The photocatalytic ability of the hybrid comes from the outstanding light harvesting of SQ dye, sufficient active sites of Ti 3 C 2 T x , and efficient separation and transfer of the photogenerated charges via heterojunction between SQ aggregates and Ti 3 C 2 T x . This work firstly demonstrates an example of SQ sensitizer combined with MXene for hydrogen generation, which provides a new insight to further explore the MXene-based hybrid nanomaterials for water splitting hydrogen evolution.

Xiaotong Mu,Lihua Chen,Nannan Qu,Jiale Yu,Xiaoqian Jiang,Chaohu Xiao,Xingping Luo,Qimeige Hasi

The application of photothermal materials in seawater desalination, wastewater treatment have been widely studied, however, there are relatively few studies that combine photothermal effects and solar-driven photocatalysis and exhibit efficient solar-driven water evaporation performance and excellent photocatalytic ability. Form the perspective of practical application, it is of great significance to combine photothermal effect with solar-driven photocatalysis to develop environment-friendly evaporator with low cost, simple preparation process and ability of seawater desalination, wastewater treatment and photodegradation of organic dyes. In this paper, a novel multifunctional MXene/polypyrrole (PPy) coated melamine foam (MF) named as MF-MXene/PPy was successfully prepared by simple impregnation and in-situ polymerization. The MF-MXene/PPy has rich porosity (89.13 %), abundant water molecule transport channels, excellent light absorption capacity (about 94 %), low thermal conductivity (0.1047 W m −1 K −1 ), and exhibits excellent performance in solar desalination, wastewater purification and photodegradation of organic dyes. Under 1 kW m −2 illuminate, the solar energy conversion rate and efficiency of MF-MXene/PPy reaches up to 1.5174 kg m -2 h −1 and 91.24 %. Moreover, due to the regular pore size of MF-MXene/PPy, good salinity tolerance was shown even after continuous evaporation in 20 wt% NaCl for 8 h. After continuous evaporation in 70 mL of 20 wt% NaCl for 8 h, the amount of salt collected could reach 0.2 g. In addition, MF-MXene/PPy also possessed excellent visible light degradation ability for organic dyes, and the degradation rate of methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RHB) and methyl orange (MO) were 92.38 %, 88.92 % and 91.75 %, respectively. As a fundamental research, this research will open a novel way to the development of new evaporator.

Two-dimensional MXene/nano-hydroxyapatite nanocomposite promotes osteogenesis by photothermal conversion

Jiebing Zhang,Shuang Tang,Ning Ding,Ping Ma,Zutai Zhang

Bone defects are a common problem that poses a serious threat to human health, causing mortality and disability worldwide. Photothermal therapy has become a promising strategy to address this problem by inducing osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) through the application of mild heat stress. To improve the current photothermal therapy for bone regeneration, the objective of this study was to develop a new photothermal therapeutic agent with improved osteogenic activity and photothermal properties. To achieve this objective, an MXene/nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) nanocomposite was synthesised and characterised. The proposed nanocomposite demonstrated excellent photothermal properties under 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. This nanocomposite was found to be biocompatible and promoted cell proliferation and adhesion, making it a suitable candidate for photothermal therapy. The results of this study suggest that the MXene/nHA nanocomposite can promote osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs. In addition, when exposed to 808 nm NIR irradiation, the MXene/nHA nanocomposite generates mild thermal stimulation via photothermal conversion, thereby enhancing its osteo-inductive potential. In summary, this study presents a novel strategy for the application of photothermal therapy in bone regeneration.

Sponge-inspired MXene@CeO2 detector for ultra-sensitive detection of glucose

S. Jiang,H. Zhang,Z. Li,L. Chen,L. Yin,X. Liu

Non-invasive sweat detectors can monitor the glucose level of diabetes in a painless way. However, most detectors need to collect enough sweat through external exercise or active stimulation, which increases the inconvenience of the user and reduces the applicable population. In this study, we propose an ultra-sensitive biomimetic glucose detector to detect the sweat produced by thermoregulation without additional exercise and stimulation. Inspired by the predator process of sponge in the sea, the sensing material of MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) @CeO 2 hydrogels employed the “laminae-trestle-laminae” (L-T-L) structure of sponge to adsorb and transport glucose molecules in sweat. CeO 2 grafted onto the MXene surface can detect glucose by the catalytic activity of CeO 2 . The glucose detector with an ultra-low limit of detection (LOD = 0.004 μM), excellent sensitivity (801.27 μA⋅μM − 1 ⋅cm − 2 ), and a broad linear detection range (LDR = 0.01–2.5 μM) can satisfy detection requirements in human sweat after dilution. In real applications, the detector can detect glucose in the sweat of diabetic patients for five consecutive days and detect the glucose content in the daily drinks of patients. Our findings demonstrate the high potential of sponge-inspired MXene@CeO 2 glucose detector for routine medical testing.

Preparation of AuNPs/MXene nanocomposite for the electrochemical determination of dopamine

Zejun Zhang,Yunxiu Sun,Baoli Wang,Yijing Ai,Fan Shi,Yucen Yao,Xueliang Niu,Wei Sun

A novel sensing system was constructed by using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and MXene-Ti 3 C 2 T x nanocomposite decorated glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for dopamine (DA) determination. The AuNPs/MXene nanocomposite was prepared via a drop coating method, which could appreciably enlarge the electrochemically active surface area of as-prepared sensor and promote electron transfer with the enhanced electrochemical signals. Applying AuNPs/MXene/GCE in the optimum conditions, differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) current responses vs. DA concentrations are linear in the wider range of 2.0-500.0 μmol/L along with low detection limit of 0.67 μmol/L (S/N=3). Moreover, the proposed AuNPs/MXene modified GCE exhibited excellent stability, selectivity and reproducibility. Finally, this sensor had been utilized to detect DA successfully in DA hydrochloride injection with satisfactory recoveries, providing a promising application for further sensing analysis.

Kangqi Chang,Jian Meng,Minhao Guo,Le Li,Tianxi Liu,Yunpeng Huang

The potential applications of wearable pressure sensors in portable electronics and artificial intelligence have generated tremendous research attention. However, developing pressure sensors with high sensitivity, rapid response, superb stability, and great dressing comfort remains a significant challenge. Herein, a flexible and breathable pressure sensor is developed on a cotton/spandex fabric via a simple sonication-assisted assembly of MXene and subsequent device packaging. Obtained MXene/cotton/spandex fabric (MCSF) pressure sensor achieves a high sensitivity of 0.1891 kPa −1 , a low-pressure detection limit of 500 Pa, a wide working range of 0–100 kPa, rapid response/recovery times of 50/90 ms, as well as an outstanding durability of 5000 cycles. Furthermore, the inherent porosity of the fabric substrates allows free transmission of air and moisture from the skin, ensuring long-term wearing comfort of the sensor. More importantly, the MCSF sensor also demonstrates real-time monitoring capability for various human motion signals including wrist pulse, phonation, and joint motions. And a step further, an integrated sensory array is successfully applied for recognizing different tactile stimuli. It is anticipated that this fabric pressure sensor will find applications in wearable motion monitoring electronics and human–computer interaction devices.

3D magnetic MXene as promising adsorbent materials for Ag(I) removal

Wenjuan Zhang,Yuheng Li,Yaxian Wang,Youliang Wang,Miao Kou,Xiangyue Yang,Qianqian Chu,Kun Zhao

An efficient route is proposed to synthesize a novel three-dimensional (3D) magnetic MXene aerogel (3D MXene/Fe 3 O 4 ). 3D MXene were synthesized by self-assembly of 2D MXene Ti 3 C 2 T x using ethylenediamine (EDA) as crosslinking inducer, then Fe 3 O 4 was in situ coprecipitation onto 3D MXene. 3D MXene/Fe 3 O 4 was applied as an adsorbent for Ag(I) removal from aqueous solutions. 3D MXene/Fe 3 O 4 exhibits a cross-linked 3D porous network with magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles uniformly dispersed on its surface and edges. The maximum adsorption capacity of 3D MXene/Fe 3 O 4 for Ag(I) was 2385 mg g −1 . The kinetics and isothermal process during adsorption were described accurately by the pseudo-second-order model and the Freundlich isotherm model, and the adsorption process was driven by chemisorption and multilayer adsorption, where the diffusion mechanism involved surface diffusion and intraparticle diffusion. Furthermore, the 3D MXene/Fe 3 O 4 are recyclable, retaining 71% of the initial removal rate after 5 adsorption/desorption cycles.

Readily prepared and processed multifunctional MXene nanocomposite hydrogels for smart electronics

Jiahui Huang,Xianwu Huang,Peiyi Wu

Booming sophisticated robotics and prosthetics put forward high requirements on soft conductive materials that can bridge electronics and biology, those soft conductive materials should imitate the mechanical properties of biological tissues and build information transmission networks. Until now, it remains a great challenge to handle the trade-off among ease of preparation, high conductivity, processability, mechanical adaptability, and external stimuli responsiveness. Herein, a kind of readily prepared and processed multifunctional MXene nanocomposite hydrogel is reported, which is prepared via the fast gelation of cationic monomer initiated by delaminated MXene sheets. The gelation time can be adjusted (several seconds to minutes) based on the MXene loadings. By adjusting the MXene ratio, the resulting nanocomposites are ultrastretchable (>5000%), three-dimensional (3D) printable, and show outstanding mechanical and electrical self-healing. As expected, the integration of multifunctional systems onto various substrates (e.g., gloves and masks) is further demonstrated via 3D printing and could achieve diverse sensory capabilities toward strain, pressure, and temperature, showing great prospects as smart flexible electronics.

Synchronously Enhanced Removal Ability and Stability of MXene through Biomimetic Modification

Qing Qing,Xian-ying Shi,Shao-zhong Hu,Liang Li,Ting Huang,Nan Zhang,Yong Wang

Increasing environmental problems intensify the demand for high-performance environmental purification materials. MXene is a typical transition-metal carbide/nitride material with a two-dimensional geometric feature and a good deal of functional groups, and it is considered as an efficient adsorbent for removing pollutants from wastewater. However, the easy oxidation and relatively low adsorption capacity greatly restrict its application. In this study, the MXene/polydopamine (PDA) composite particles were fabricated through the biomimetic modification method of inducing the self-polymerization of dopamine in an MXene aqueous solution. Microstructure characterizations demonstrate that PDA facilitates the exfoliation of MXene. Adsorption measurements show that MXene and PDA exhibit an apparent synergistic effect in removing chromium hexavalent Cr(VI) from aqueous solution, and more PDA content leads to a larger synergistic effect. Consequently, the composite particles exhibit an ultrahigh adsorption capacity (862.3 mg/g). Specifically, even if the composite particles were stored in aqueous solution for 2 months, they still exhibit high adsorption ability with only a 3.3% loss in adsorption capacity, indirectly confirming the enhanced stability of MXene induced by PDA. Furthermore, the composite particles also show reduction ability to Cr(VI) and about 54.3% Cr(VI) can be reduced to harmless chromium trivalent Cr(III). This study provides a new method for the preparation of MXene-based adsorbents with excellent adsorption capacity and high stability, which has broad application prospects in the field of wastewater treatment.
