Lanthanide β-Diketonate Complex Functionalized Poly(ionic liquid)s/SiO2 Microsphere as a Fluorescent Probe for the Determination of Bovine Hemoglobin

Ying Li,Hua-Xu Ling,Yu Gao,Shuo Zhang,Bing Yan

The application of the excellent luminescence properties of lanthanide β-diketonate complex in water systems is the focus of the research in this field. We introduced the lanthanide β-diketonate complex into the framework of polyionic liquid (PIL) and SiO2 to prepare a lanthanide complex hybrid material fluorescent probe SiO2@PIL-Eu(nta)4, which can be used for the detection of bovine hemoglobin in water. Hydrophilic polyionic liquid grafted with SiO2 nanoparticles was the template of the hybrid material. The lanthanide complex was introduced into the prepared spherical polyionic liquid brushes by ion exchange. The obtained products were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy, and luminescence spectroscopy. The PIL matrix improved the fluorescence lifetime and quantum efficiencies of the lanthanide complex. The as-synthesized hybrid material was employed as a fluorescent probe for the bovine hemoglobin detection in an aqueous solution and the limit of detection is 0.0803 mg/mL. The addition of H2O2 can intensify the quenching of the fluorescent probe. In addition, we analyzed and discussed the quenching mechanism of the probe. The bovine hemoglobin can quench the fluorescence of the probe with the inner filter effect. In the presence of both H2O2 and bovine hemoglobin, the structure of the probe is oxidized by the superoxide anion in the system and the fluorescence of the probe is quenched by the mechanism of static quenching.

Heterointerface and Defect Dual Engineering in a Superhydrophilic Ni2P/WO2.83 Microsphere for Boosting Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction at High Current Density

Yumin Zhou,Rongyao Li,Lihui Dong,Shibin Yin,Bingxian Chu,Zhengjun Chen,Jiaxiang Wang,Bin Li,Minguang Fan

Developing a high-performance electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) requires a comprehensive consideration of the three key factors, that is, intrinsic activity, electric conductivity, and active site number. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of a self-supported Ni2P/WO2.83 heterointerface microsphere as a highly active and low-cost catalyst for alkaline HER, which has simultaneously addressed these key issues by a joint application of heterointerface construction and defect and architecture engineering strategies. Our density functional theory calculations revealed Ni2P and WO2.83 optimized by the interface coupling effect work in concert to improve the intrinsic activity of the catalyst. Importantly, the metalloid Ni2P in an intimate combination with the oxygen-defect-rich WO2.83 species endowed the electrocatalyst with high conductivity. Furthermore, the Ni2P/WO2.83 electrocatalyst presented a superhydrophilic nanostructure, ensuring abundant active sites and their accessibility. Benefiting from these attributes, the obtained Ni2P/WO2.83 heterointerface electrocatalyst exhibited excellent activity along with favorable stability for alkaline HER, especially at high current density, surpassing the most reported non-precious catalysts.

Photoinitiated polymerization of beta-cyclodextrin-stabilized Pickering high internal phase emulsion for preparation of polymethacrylate microsphere and its adsorption towards dyes

Zhang Yipeng,Jiang Ruohai,Zhang Yujie,Huang Chaozhang,Xiong Xiaopeng

Microsphere polymer material finds a wide range of applications in fields such as adsorbent, drug carrier, catalyst and coating, and receives continuous attention. We here report a novel strategy of quick synthesis of polymethacrylate microsphere via photoinitiated polymerization of methacrylate monomer in a high internal phase emulsion (HIPE). A low cost and environmentally friendly natural product of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) has been directly used as Pickering emulsifier to stabilize the methacrylate monomer in water to prepare the HIPE. The factors to control the particle size such as the dosage of β-CD, volume fraction of monomer internal phase and amount of inert diluting solvent, have been investigated in detail. Meanwhile, the approach has been validated by using various methacrylate monomers. Our results indicate that using a diluting solvent can not only change the surface morphology but also control the inner microstructure of the microsphere. By using a poor solvent of cyclohexane as diluting agent, porous microsphere other than solid microsphere has been prepared, and it could be directly applied as adsorbent to decolor oil. Moreover, the obtained poly(glycidyl methacrylate) microsphere was post-modified to exhibit satisfactory adsorption efficiencies towards organic dye contaminates in water. Those results indicate powerful platform of the obtained microsphere with reactive groups for further modification to prepare functional materials for desired purposes. Based on the fast synthesis, high yield, low energy cost as well as no harmful waste, the preparation strategy reported in this work could be scalable, and the obtained microsphere may find promising potential applications. Magnetic and N–doped nanofibrous carbon microsphere with hierarchical porosity as a nanozyme for on-site and visual detection of glucose

Yue Liu,Jiajun Zhang,Taimei Cai,Rong Wang,Gan Yang,Tao Wen,Hailong Peng

Background On-site and rapid detection of glucose level in foods is important for monitoring and control glucose intake. Methods Magnetic and N–doped nanofibrous carbon microspheres (Fe@NCMs) with hierarchical porosity were designed as a novel nanozyme (Fe@NCMzyme), and the catalytic mechanism was investigated via the density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Therefore, Fe@NCMzyme sensor and point-of-care testing (POCT) platform were developed for glucose detection in food samples. Significant findings Fe@NCMzyme showed 3D porous structure, a larger surface area, and N–doped carbon material properties, resulting in an enhanced peroxidase (POD)–like activity. In Fe@NCMzyme, Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (FeNPs) act as catalytic centers and N–doped carbon nanofibers could be used as substrate binding sites. DFT results revealed that Fe–induced Fenton–like reaction was the main catalytic mechanism. The low detection limit and linear range of Fe@NCMzyme sensor was 0.247 μM and 1–900 μM, respectively. The excellent recovery ration in spiked food samples was 85.0 %–110.0 %. The applicability of Fe@NCMzyme sensor for glucose detection was verified by the commercial Glucometer. Furthermore, Fe@NCMzyme POCT platform was established and a linear detection range (10–900 μM) was obtained with low detection limit (3.125 μM). Importantly, Fe@NCMzyme POCT platform was realized visual, on–site, and rapid detection of glucose in food samples.

New Insight into the Hierarchical Microsphere Evolution of Organic Three-Dimensional Layer Double Hydroxide: The Key Role of the Surfactant Template

Ping Zhang,Tao He,Peng Li,Xianzhe Zeng,Yun Huang

Surfactants have proven a suitable template agent for the construction of organic three-dimensional layered double hydroxide (O3D-LDH) due to the excellent self-assembled property and ready operation. Although the morphology and growth of O3D-LDH are affected by various factors (initial surfactant concentration, Mg/Al molar ratio, hydrothermal temperature, urea concentration, hydrothermal time, etc.), little is known about the key role of surfactants in the growth behavior and mechanism. In this study, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was chosen to identify the behavior of the surfactant on the evolution of O3D-LDH with various factors. The as-grown procedure was investigated by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis. The results demonstrated that the ideal 3D roselike hierarchical structure was obtained at a Mg/Al/urea molar ratio of 2:1:10 and SDS concentration of 0.1 mol L–1 at 150 °C for 6 h. It is worth noting that SDS showed an extraordinary importance regarding the material growth, as it was intrinsically related to the formation of spherical micelles and functioned as an intercalating anion. Furthermore, a possible growth mechanism was proposed to explain the formation of O3D-LDH. Our finding opens a new insight into the role of SDS in the O3D-LDH fabrication and provides a theoretical foundation for other LDH material construction.

Commercial Polymer Microsphere Grafted TBD-Based Ionic Liquids as Efficient and Low-Cost Catalyst for the Cycloaddition of CO2 with Epoxides

Dai Weili,Mao Jie,Liu Ying,Mao Pei,Luo Xubiao,Zou Jianping

Development of efficient, cheap and recyclable catalysts for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from CO 2 and epoxides is still a very attractive topic. Herein, the polymer grafted TBD-based ionic liquids (ILs) were fabricated from commercially available polystyrene (PS) and ingredients of the ILs, and used as heterogeneous catalysts for the conversion of CO 2 into cyclic carbonates in the absence of solvent and co-catalyst. To improve the catalytic performance, various substitutes (such as –COOH, –OH and –NH 2 ) were functionalized on the TBD cation. Among the as-obtained catalysts, carboxyl-containing catalyst (PS–[CETBD]Br) showed superior activity than others, which may be attributed to the stronger polarization capability of –COOH on the C–O bond of epoxide through the formed hydrogen bonding. Additionally, the combined synergistic effect of the nucleophilic attack by the halide anions also account for the facile ring-opening of epoxide. It is noted that CO 2 can be activated by the formation of carbamate between CO 2 and alkaline nitrogen of the TBD cations, thus facilitating the formation of cyclic carbonates. Moreover, the catalyst shows good chemical stability and catalytic reusability, which is very important for the practical conversion of CO 2 in chemical industry. Graphical Abstract

Synthesis of a novel porous silicon microsphere@carbon core-shell composite via in situ MOF coating for lithium ion battery anodes

Kai Wang,Shien Pei,Zhishun He,Liang-ai Huang,Shasha Zhu,Jianfeng Guo,Haibo Shao,Jianming Wang

Nanostructured silicon/carbon composites with enhanced lithium storage are especially attractive for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The SiAl/Al-MOF core-shell precursor is prepared by the self-corrosion reaction of SiAl alloy with an organic acid in the hydrothermal condition, and the following rational annealing and etching treatments lead to the formation of the porous silicon microsphere@C (pSiMS@C) core-shell composite. The pSiMS@C composite is composed of an amorphous carbon shell and the porous silicon microsphere core consisting of interconnected nanowires, manifesting a novel core-shell structure. The as-prepared pSiMS@C electrode delivers a reversible capacity of 1027.8 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g −1 , with a good capacity retention of 79%. The carbon shell may markedly improve the electronic conductivity, and the porous silicon microsphere core may promote the kinetics for Faradic reaction and diffusion process and alleviate the huge volume change during the charge/discharge cycling, responsible for the excellent lithium storage performance of the pSiMS@C core-shell composite.

Hydrophilic Nb5+-immobilized magnetic core–shell microsphere – A novel immobilized metal ion affinity chromatography material for highly selective enrichment of phosphopeptides

Xueni Sun,Xiaodan Liu,Jianan Feng,Yan Li,Chunhui Deng,Gengli Duan

Rapid and selective enrichment of phosphopeptides from complex biological samples is essential and challenging in phosphorylated proteomics. In this work, for the first time, niobium ions were directly immobilized on the surface of polydopamine-coated magnetic microspheres through a facile and effective synthetic route. The Fe 3 O 4 @polydopamine-Nb 5+ (denoted as Fe 3 O 4 @PD-Nb 5+ ) microspheres possess merits of high hydrophilicity and good biological compatibility, and demonstrated low limit of detection (2   fmol). The selectivity was also basically satisfactory (β-casein:BSA   =   1:500) to capture phosphopeptides. They were also successfully applied for enrichment of phosphopeptides from real biological samples such as human serum and nonfat milk. Compared with Fe 3 O 4 @PD-Ti 4+ microspheres, the Fe 3 O 4 @PD-Nb 5+ microspheres exhibit superior selectivity to multi-phosphorylated peptides, and thus may be complementary to the conventional IMAC materials.

Ultrasonic spray pyrolysis assembly of a TiO2–WO3–Pt multi-heterojunction microsphere photocatalyst using highly crystalline WO3 nanosheets: less is better

Han Zheng,Changhua Wang,Xintong Zhang,Lina Kong,Yingying Li,Yunyu Liu,Yichun Liu

Multi-heterojunctions are more promising than single-heterojunctions in photocatalysis due to the availability of more interfaces between each component. However, photocatalytic activity is highly dependent on the contact mode of individual components. In this work, we assemble TiO2–WO3–Pt multi-heterojunction microspheres using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis and focus on their contact mode governed photocatalytic activity. The results reveal that using highly crystalline WO3 nanosheets as building blocks could particularly enhance the photocatalytic activity of a TiO2/WO3 system toward the degradation of gaseous acetaldehyde and isopropyl alcohol. Furthermore, loading Pt nanoparticles onto WO3 nanosheets could facilitate a more prominent enhancement of activity than that of TiO2/Pt, benefiting from the two-electron reduction of oxygen at the interface of WO3/Pt. Meanwhile, the high crystallinity of WO3 nanosheets allows for a loading amount of Pt as low as 0.04 wt% in the TiO2–WO3–Pt system, which reduces the catalyst cost in comparison with that of the conventional amount of 1 wt%.

Polyoxometalate–Surfactant Hybrids Directed Assembly of Ni3S2 into Hollow Microsphere as Pt-Comparable Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Medium

Bin Tian,Jinlong Lei,Jiahai Wang

A large surface area of catalytic sites and low electric resistance are desirable properties for electrocatalysts that lower the overpotential required for electrochemical reactions, such as the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), in this study. In the presence of polyoxometalate (POM) and triblock copolymer pluronic (P123) as a hybrid soft template, the hydrothermal sulfurization of nickel foam leads to the formation of a hollow microsphere, assembled from the Ni3S2 motif. Sonication for preparing POM+P123 hybrids, while adjusting the POM content, is an effective strategy for synthesizing a Pt-like electrocatalyst with excellent hydrogen evolution efficiency. The reason is that both sonication and optimal POM content can simultaneously enhance the electroactive surface area and electron transfer of the Ni3S2 electrocatalyst. Adopting the optimal conditions, the three-dimensional porous network, composed of Ni3S2 hollow microspheres on the nickel foam, shows that the HER in an alkaline medium requires only 77 mV overpotential for a current density of 10 mA cm–2, with a robust long-term stability during a 25 h test. The performance at a large current density outperforms the current benchmark electrocatalyst (Pt) for HER.

Preparation of a novel microsphere adsorbent of prussian blue capsulated in carboxymethyl cellulose sodium for Cs(I) removal from contaminated water

Zong Youli,Zhang Yongde,Lin Xiaoyan,Ye Dong,Luo Xuegang,Wang Jing

A novel microsphere adsorbent based upon carboxymethyl cellulose sodium/prussian blue composite loaded with Lanthanum(III) (CMC/PB-La) was successfully synthesized via electrostatic ejection device for removal of cesium from contaminated water, and characterized by FT-IR, SEM, EDX and XPS. Influencing factors to adsorption cesium were investigated, including solution pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial concentration, temperature and competing ions. Linear Freundlich isotherm was fitted satisfactorily to the adsorption data, and the adsorption kinetic data was fitted well with pseudo-second-order model. Moreover, the results of γ-irradiation experiments indicate that CMC/PB-La has good radiation stability.

Fabrication of gold nanoparticles supported on hollow microsphere of nanosized TS-1 for the epoxidation of propylene with H2 and O2

Leilei Hou,Siyang Yan,Liping Liu,Jiaxu Liu,Guang Xiong

The TS-1 microsphere was facilely prepared via a direct spray drying of the mixture containing the nanocrystal TS-1 and mother liquor. The calcined TS-1 zeolites possess a hollow structure and numerous intercrystalline mesopores, which may facilitate the diffusion properties. Au nanoparticles were loaded on TS-1 support by utilizing a deposition–precipitation process to prepare the Au/TS-1-M catalysts for propylene epoxidation in the presence of H 2 and O 2 conditions. The effects of the Ti and Au loadings on the structure, porosity, morphology, and catalytic performances of the Au/TS-1 catalysts have been investigated by various techniques. Under the optimized synthesis conditions (Si/Ti molar ratio = 57, 0.49 wt% Au), a propylene conversion of 6.1 % and a PO selectivity of 91.7 % were obtained on the Au/TS-1 catalyst. A PO formation rate of 186.8 g PO ·kg cat. −1 ·h −1 was achieved at the 20th hour.
