Quaternary semiconductor film consists of ZnO, ZnSe, CdSe and MoS 2 was designed to establish a core-shell structure to achieve the photoelectrochemical oxidation of amoxicillin . The hybrid photoelectrode was fabricated on a FTO substrate from bath deposition methods . The hierarchical ZnSe/CdSe/MoS 2 shell was covered uniformly on ZnO nanorod core which provided a direct pathway for electron transfer , large surface area to enhance light absorption and increase active sites. The quaternary photoelectrode exhibited a photocurrent density of 26.86 mA/cm 2 at 0 V vs. Ag/AgCl under UV–visible light illumination, which was 31.9 times, 16.7 times and 1.6 times of that of the bare ZnO nanorods, binary ZnO/ZnSe and ternary ZnO/ZnSe/CdSe photoelectrodes, respectively. 10 ppm of amoxicillin was completely degraded in 30 min by the quaternary working electrode with an applied bias of 0.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl. The reusability and stability of quaternary electrode was demonstrated by 3-run recycling experiments. The enhanced photoelectrochemical performance of quaternary photoelectrode can be attributed to the enhancement of light absorption and increased active sites from the coverage of visible-active layers, the accelerated charge separation from the formation of p-n junction and reduced photocorrosion of CdSe from the protection of MoS 2 on the surface.

Constructing regularly catalytic arrays is essential for electrochemical catalysis, especially for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, two-dimensional zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) arrays were chosen as templates to construct few-layer MoS2-decorated hollow CoP. By coupling MoS2 nanosheets arrays and two-dimensional ZIF-67 derived CoP, the advantages of the active sites of MoS2 nanosheets edges and CoP are combined for efficient HER, which can drive a current density of 100 mA/cm2 in both acid (91 mV) and alkaline (135 mV) solutions for 10 h. Furthermore, the prepared catalyst can reach a current density of 10 mA/cm2 with overpotentials of only 53 and 77 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1 M KOH, respectively. Most importantly, we believe replacing ZIF-67 powders with 2D ZIF-67 arrays can boost the electrochemical activities for HER and this method can provide us a guideline for the future application of two-dimensional ZIF-67 arrays to construct efficient electrocatalysts.

Two-dimensional (2D) layered transitional metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) materials have been theoretically and experimentally proven to possess a good potential in thermoelectric (TE) energy harvesting. As a member of TMDCs, molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) was severely hindered by poor electrical conductivity for better TE performance. Herein, noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) was employed to optimize the electrical conductivity of MoS 2 films by spontaneous decoration. As a result, the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of MoS 2 films with a little Ag NPs load were simultaneously enhanced, which may result from the formation of more electrically conductive path and the stronger energy filtering effect generated by Ag NPs decoration. These results indicate that the conflict between thermoelectric factors can effectively resolve by spontaneous Ag NPs decoration. This technique may shed light on a new way for optimizing the TE energy harvesting efficiency for 2D TMDCs materials.

Developing highly efficient noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has attracted increasing attentions. Here, we report a simple strategy to synthesize the hierarchical “nanoroll” like MoS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x hybrid by combining liquid nitrogen-freezing and subsequent annealing. The quick freezing of the Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets and ammonium tetrathiomolybdate mixture causes a sudden change in the strain of Ti 3 C 2 T x , which leads to an interesting “nanoroll” like hierarchical structure. After annealing at H 2 /Ar atmosphere, vertically aligned molybdenum sulfide (MoS 2 ) crystallites are in situ formed in and on the nanoroll like Ti 3 C 2 T x . Notably, this hierarchical MoS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x hybrid exhibits excellent HER catalytic activity with a small onset overpotential of 30 mV, and a more than 25-fold increase in the exchange current density compared with MoS 2 was observed.

A method is described for the fluorometric determination of hypochlorite. It is making use of molybdenum disulfide quantum dots (MoS 2 QDs) as a fluorescent probe. The QDs are prepared by hydrothermal reaction of sodium molybdate with glutathione. They possess diameters typically ranging from 1.4 to 3.8 nm, excellent stability in water, and blue photoluminescence (with excitation/emission peaks located at 315/412 nm and a quantum yield of 3.7%). The fluorescence of the QDs is statically quenched by hypochlorite, and the Stern-Volmer plot is linear. Hypochlorite can be detected in the 5–500 μM concentration range with a 0.5 μM detection limit. The method has been successfully applied to the determination of hypochlorite in spiked samples of tap water, lake water, and commercial disinfectants.

For the first time, Cu nanoparticles were evenly decorated on MoS 2 nanosheet by chemical reduction. The as-prepared Cu-MoS 2 hybrid was characterized by atomic force microscope (AFM), Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and then used to fabricate a non-enzymatic glucose sensor. The performance of our sensor was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and amperometric measurement in alkaline media. Electrochemical tests showed that Cu-MoS 2 hybrid exhibited synergistic electrocatalytic activity on the oxidation of glucose with a high sensitivity of 1055 μA mM −1 cm −2 and a linear range up to 4 mM.

A novel hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and nitric oxide (NO) biosensor was fabricated by immobilizing hemoglobin (Hb) on a gold nanoparticle-decorated MoS2 nanosheet (AuNPs@MoS2) nanocomposite film modified glass carbon electrode. The AuNPs@MoS2 nanocomposite not only made the immobilized Hb keep its native biological activity but also facilitated the electron transfer between electrode and the electroactive center of Hb due to its excellent conductivity and biocompatibility. The direct electrochemistry and bioelectrocatalytic activity of Hb were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The modified electrode showed good electrocatalytic ability toward the reduction of H2O2 and NO. Under optimal conditions, the current response was linear with the concentration of H2O2 and NO in the range from 10 to 300 μM and 10 to 1100 μM with a detection limit of 4 and 5 μM, respectively. This MoS2-based biosensor was sensitive, reproducible and stable, indicating that AuNPs@MoS2 nanocomposite maybe a promising platform to construct electrochemical sensors for chemical and biological molecules detection.

Aerogel composite materials consisting of MoS 2 and reduced graphite oxide (rGO) are synthesized by a facile general hydrothermal method, where GO is utilized as a template and provides a novel substrate for the nucleation and subsequent growth of MoS 2 . These MoS 2 /rGO hybrid nanostructures exhibit three-dimensional (3D) leaf-like morphology, and show excellent electrocatalytic activities of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), with a low overpotential of approximately 105 mV, a small Tafel slope of 51 mV/dec and a large exchange current density ( j 0 ) of 3.28 × 10 −5 A/cm 2 . The superior electrochemical performance should be attributed to the 3D porous MoS 2 /rGO hybrid architecture, which enhances the conductivity from graphene to MoS 2 as well as the HER activity.

In this work, we synthesized the three differently structured MoS 2 including flower-like, sphere and porous as electrocatalysts for hydrogen production. Based on the experiment results, we proposed reasonable formation mechanisms for the differently structured MoS 2 . Since the final obtained flower-like MoS 2 possessed a mass of active sites with densely stacked MoS 2 multi-slices, it could deliver the optimal HER (hydrogen evolution reaction) activity. In order to give a theoretical explanation for the inherent mechanism, the first-principles investigation based on density functional theory (DFT) was further performed to survey the adsorption characteristic of H atom in MoS 2 at different sites. In short, the corresponding calculations gave the theoretical explanation for the different HER performance and provided valuable references for the future studies.

In this work, we report a facile strategy to prepare PEGylated MoS 2 nanosheets through the combination of mussel inspired chemistry and Michael addition reaction. The MoS 2 nanosheets were obtained from lithium intercalation and exfoliation method. Meanwhile, the amino-contained poly((polyethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) (PPEGMA) were obtained via chain transfer free radical polymerization using cysteamine hydrochloride as the chain transfer agents and PEGMA as the monomer. To introduce PPEGMA on MoS 2 nanosheets, polydopamine (PDA) thin films were first coated on the surface of MoS 2 nanosheets through self polymerization of dopamine as the ad-layers, which can react with amino-terminated PPEGMA through Michael addition reaction. The structure, morphology and chemical compositions of MoS 2 nanosheets and MoS 2 -PDA-PPEGMA have been characterized by various characterization techniques. The results demonstrated that the amino-terminated PPEGMA can be successfully immobilized on MoS 2 nanosheets via PDA thin films as the ad-layers. More importantly, the strategy described in this work could also be utilized for surface immobilization of various polymers on many other materials and surfaces because of the universal adhesion of PDA and the good monomer applicability of chain transfer free radical polymerization. Taken together, we developed a facile and versatile method to fabricate multifunctional MoS 2 based polymer nanocomposites with designable properties and applications via combination of mussel inspired and chain transfer free radical polymerization. The resultant composites are expected to be potentially used for drug delivery and photothermal cancer treatment.

Developing two dimensional (2D) materials based ink is an advanced method for fabricating printable and flexible electronic devices. 2D few-layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) reveals a great potential for capacitive energy storage because of its layered structure (for ion intercalation), high surface area (provide active sites) and multi-valence state of Mo (introduce pseudocapacitive reactions). These unique properties could intensively improve the potential of MoS 2 for supercapacitors. However, MoS 2 is a semiconductor with low conductivity, which limits its performance in electrochemistry. In the meantime, MoS 2 based ink for flexible energy storage application has been barely investigated. In this work, we design a MoS 2 and carbon nanotube (MoS 2 /CNT) hybrid ink that uses exfoliated MoS 2 nanosheet and CNT to fabricate a paper-based supercapacitor. A strong synergistic effect between MoS 2 and CNT in capacitive performance was observed due to the good conductivity of CNT and high capacitance of MoS 2 . Paper-based solid-state device is also fabricated which reveals good flexibility and high capacitive performance. This hybrid ink represents a new road for flexible paper-based devices.

Graphical Will it bend? A novel 3D porous network MoS 2 @CNT/RGO membrane was designed, fabricated, and assembled into a symmetric flexible supercapacitor. The supercapacitor exhibits a high rate capability, stable cycling life at high rates, and high power density. The study may provide opportunities for expanding the potential of self-supporting electrode materials in portable/wearable electronics. Two-dimensional atomically thick materials, reduced graphene oxide (RGO), and layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) have been investigated as potential novel energy storage materials because of their distinct physicochemical properties. These materials suffer, however, from rapid capacity decay and low rate capability. This study describes a facile, binder-free approach to fabricate large-scale, 3D network structured MoS 2 @carbon nanotube (CNT)/RGO composites for application in flexible supercapacitor devices. The as-obtained composites possess a hierarchical porosity, and an interconnected framework. The electrochemical supercapacitive measurements of the MoS 2 @CNT/RGO electrode show a high specific capacitance of 129 mF cm −2 at 0.1 mA cm −2 . The symmetric supercapacitor devices based on the as-obtained composites exhibit a long lifetime (94.7 % capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles), and a high electrochemical performance (29.7 mF cm −2 ). The present experimental findings will lead to scalable, binder-free synthesis of MoS 2 @CNT/RGO hybrid electrodes, with enhanced, flexible, supercapacitive performance, in portable and wearable energy storage devices.
