A Novel Ratiometric Fluorescent Nanosensor Based on N-CDs@UiO-66-NH2 for Sensitive and Selective Detection of Nitrite

Tong Xiang,Chongyang Zhang,Qiongqiong Ren,Jinlong Chang,Linyan Xie,Xuming Sun

Nitrite (NO2−) is a crucial environmental and food safety indicator, and excessive intake poses severe threats to human health; thus, highly sensitive and selective detection methods are urgently needed. Herein, a ratiometric fluorescent nanosensor based on N-CDs@UiO-66-NH2was constructed via a facile assembly strategy for sensitive and selective nitrite detection. The composite demonstrated dual-emission fluorescence at 456 nm and 730 nm under 365 nm excitation, originating from UiO-66-NH2and N-CDs, respectively, enabling an intrinsic self-referencing signal. The fluorescence intensity ratio exhibited a good linear response toward nitrite in the range of 10–100 μM and 100–450 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) 1.76 μM. The nanosensor showed high selectivity and anti-interference ability against various ions and molecules. Furthermore, it was successfully applied to nitrite detection in lake water samples with satisfactory recoveries (97–101%) and low relative standard deviations (<1.8%). This work provides a simple and effective approach for nitrite monitoring in environmental samples.

Optimized Synthesis and Properties of Dumbbell-Shaped NaYF4:Yb,Tm@NaGdF4:Eu@NH2-MIL-53(Fe) Core–Shell Nanocomposite

Xinyao Su,Wen Guo,Qunming Zhou,Tingting Xie,Lingyan Wu,Shangyang Wang,You Fu,Shurong Li,Wei Peng,Peijun Meng

Cancer theranostics urgently demands multifunctional nanomaterials capable of simultaneously enabling high-sensitivity imaging and multimodal synergistic therapy. In this study, a three-layer core–shell nanocomposite, NaYF4:Yb,Tm@NaGdF4:Eu@NH2-MIL-53(Fe), was designed and synthesized. The NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanoparticle core provides upconversion luminescence upon near-infrared (NIR) excitation and can serve as an excitation source for photodynamic therapy. An epitaxially grown NaGdF4:Eu intermediate shell was introduced to enhance luminescence and provide T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) capability. The outermost NH2-MIL-53(Fe) metal–organic framework shell was subsequently coated to provide potential chemodynamic therapy (CDT) capability. The effects of the Eu3+doping concentration, reaction temperature, reaction time, and oleic acid (OA)/1-octadecene (ODE) ratio on the anisotropic growth into a dumbbell-like morphology were examined to determine the optimal conditions. Under the optimal conditions (10 mol% Eu3+, 300 °C, 60 min, OA/ODE = 4:16), core–shell nanocrystals with regular morphology, uniform size, and the strongest upconversion luminescence were obtained. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-mediated surface functionalization successfully induced the in situ growth of the NH2-MIL-53(Fe) outer shell, thereby constructing a three-layer core–shell nanocomposite as a potential theranostic platform. Various characterizations confirmed that the resulting composite integrates upconversion luminescence, paramagnetism, and hydroxyl radical generation capability, suggesting potential for NIR-driven dual-modal imaging-guided synergistic therapy.

Oil-impregnated gel grafting onto UiO-66-NH2 coating engineered slippery lubricant-infused porous surface for durable corrosion protection

Jiaxuan Zhou,Lingjie Li,Kai Qi,Yubing Qiu,Xingpeng Guo

Slippery lubricant-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have attracted much attention in recent years due to their significant potential for wide applications in surface engineering. However, the depletion of lubricants severely limits the long-term durability of SLIPSs. Herein, we fabricate a durable SLIPS by covalently grafting a perfluoropolyethers (PFPE)-impregnated perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (PFDTES) gel onto a UiO-66-NH 2 metal-organic framework (MOF) membrane to create a robust lubricant reservoir. It is worth noting that a similar polarity of PFDTES gel and PFPE enables PFPE to anchor onto the gel surface and within the crosslinked gel network via intermolecular forces, facilitating durable hydrophobicity. Meanwhile, the covalent grafting of a gel layer onto UiO-66-NH 2 membrane enhances the bonding strength for long-lasting stability. The resultant UiO-66-NH 2 based SLIPS exhibits the water repellency with water contact angle of ∼121° and sliding angle of ∼4°, performing satisfactory anti-fouling, anti-icing, self-cleaning, salt-tolerance and acid-/alkali-resistance properties. Electrochemical tests reveal a significant increase in corrosion resistance after PFPE infusion. The coating maintains stable hydrophobicity and provides sustainable corrosion protection during immersion in 3.5 wt.% NaCl aqueous solution and even 5 wt.% NaCl salt spray tests for over 12 weeks. This work would offer valuable insights into the multi-functional development of MOF-based protective coatings.

Efficient PFOA degradation using UiO-66-NH2 photocatalytic coupled persulfate activation: synergistic effect of surface radicals and photogenerated holes

Lijuan Chang,Xianli Wang,Chengbin Liu,Hang Wen,Zhijie Zhang,Chunxia Yao

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has attracted growing attention due to its widespread occurrence and harmful effects on humans. Owing to the strong C F bonds that confer inherent stability on PFOA, achieving efficient degradation via traditional photocatalysts is highly challenging. In this study, a UiO-66-NH 2 photocatalytic-persulfate (UiO-66-NH 2 /PS) integrated system was constructed to achieve high-efficiency PFOA removal, and its underlying mechanism was systematically revealed. A zirconium-based metal–organic framework, UiO-66-NH 2 , with readily tunable porosity was successfully synthesized via a solvothermal route, and its crystal structure, microstructure, and optical absorption behavior were confirmed through comprehensive characterizations. After optimization of the reaction parameters, the UiO-66-NH₂/PS system exhibited excellent PFOA degradation performance, with a markedly enhanced removal efficiency relative to the single UiO-66-NH 2 or persulfate system. The degradation efficiency of UiO-66-NH 2 /PS system in degrading PFOA was affected by ubiquitous anions and humic acid in water. Investigation of degradation pathways revealed that the cooperative action of photogenerated holes and SO₄• − /•OH radicals progressively cleaved the recalcitrant C F bonds, with short-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) including perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA, C 6 F 13 COOH), perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA, C 5 F 11 COOH), perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA, C 4 F 9 COOH), and perfluorobutyric acid (PFBA, C 3 F 7 COOH) identified as the main degradation intermediates. This study proposed a high-efficiency, economical and eco-friendly approach for the mineralization of PFOA, and meanwhile shed new light on the mechanism underlying the efficient degradation of PFOA by UiO-66-based photocatalysis combined with persulfate activation.

NH2-MIL-125-functionalized mixed-matrix membranes for efficient oil-in-water emulsion separation and light-assisted self-cleaning

Yu Shouwu,Yue Tingting,Chen Yifu,Tong Yuxia,Xiao Shujuan

The treatment of dye-containing oil-in-water emulsions remains challenging due to membrane fouling and limited operational stability. In this study, amino-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) NH 2 -MIL-125 was incorporated into polysulfone (PSF) membranes via phase inversion to fabricate mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for oil-in-water emulsion separation and light-assisted self-cleaning. The separation test was conducted at 0.2 MPa using an as-prepared sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-stabilized n-hexane-in-water emulsion containing 1.0 vol% oil. Compared with pristine PSF, the optimized PN0.5 membrane showed a decrease in water contact angle (WCA) from 67.5 ± 2.0° to 22.7 ± 2.4° and an increase in underwater oil contact angle (UWOCA) from 73.0 ± 2.3° to 140.0 ± 2.6°, confirming enhanced hydrophilicity and underwater oleophobicity. PN0.5 achieved a permeate flux of approximately 245 L·m⁻ 2 ·h⁻ 1 and a separation efficiency close to 99%. Moreover, PN0.5 maintained approximately 98% separation efficiency during a seven-day cyclic filtration test. In a separate antifouling test, the membrane exhibited a low irreversible fouling ratio of 3.79%. Under irradiation with a 300 W xenon lamp for 60 min, the NH 2 -MIL-125-containing membrane promoted methylene blue (MB) decolorization and dye-foulant removal, while the irreversible fouling ratio remained low at 3.98% for the MB-containing emulsion after light-assisted self-cleaning. These results demonstrate the potential of NH 2 -MIL-125/PSF mixed-matrix membranes for treating dye-containing oily wastewater.

NH2–Ag@CuNWs with self-catalytically enhanced electrochemiluminescence as a luminophore for the ultrasensitive evaluation of liver cancer markers

Yuwei Wang,Ziyu Zhu,Shan Nan,Chen Hu,Axin Liang,Jiangjiang Zhang,Aiqin Luo

Exploring novel luminophores and co-reactant accelerators to enhance electrochemiluminescence (ECL) performance represents a cutting-edge academic research. In this study, a new of ECL system based on copper nanowires (CuNWs) was proposed, which successfully achieved enhanced ECL performance of CuNWs. Specifically, NH 2 –Ag-coated copper nanowires (NH 2 –Ag@CuNWs) were fabricated as a quasi-three-dimensional luminescent composite that integrated both a luminophore and a co-reactant accelerator, distinguished by a low trigger potential of −0.7 V. The NH 2 –Ag@CuNWs composite lumophore not only protect the excellent luminescent properties of CuNWs, but also leverages NH 2 –Ag as an accelerator for the CuNWs/K 2 S 2 O 8 system, shortening the distance required for redox reaction. The dual catalytic effect of the amino groups and Ag promoted the generation of intermediate free radicals from sulfate anions, accelerating electron transfer kinetics and redox reaction rates, while effectively enhancing and stabilizing the luminescent response. Combining the high affinity and selectivity of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), a molecularly imprinted electrochemiluminescence sensing (MIECLS) platform was further developed for ultra-sensitive detection of alpha-fetoprotein(AFP). Under optimized experimental conditions, the detection range of the MIECLS was 10 fg mL −1 to 100 ng mL −1 , and the limit of detection was 1.10 fg mL −1 . This work not only provides a promising strategy for precise detection of AFP in complex matrices, but also proposes new strategies for improving the performance of CuNWs, expanding its applications.

Room-temperature synthesis of defect-rich UiO-66-NH2 for effective removal of low-concentration arsenate from natural waters

Yan Wang,Ranwen Ou,Le Zhang,Neng Yan,Wei Zhang

The development of highly efficient and sustainable adsorbents for arsenic removal is crucial for public health. Herein, we report a room-temperature, trifluoroacetic acid (TFA)-modulated approach for synthesizing defective UiO-66-NH 2 (denoted as UiO-66-NH 2 -X, where X is the TFA dosage) to achieve deep removal of arsenate [As(V)] from water. Optimizing the TFA dosage significantly improved the crystallinity, defect density, and textural properties of UiO-66-NH 2 -X, thereby enhancing its As(V) sorption performance. Among the UiO-66-NH 2 -X variants, UiO-66-NH 2 –8 effectively reduced As(V) concentrations (50–5000 μg·L −1 ) to below the safe drinking standard of 10 μg·L −1 with minimal secondary pollution. It exhibited rapid kinetics (> 99 % removal in 60 min), a broad working pH range (2−10), resistance to coexisting ions and humic acid interference, and good reusability (> 90 % over 6 cycles). According to Langmuir model, UiO-66-NH 2 –8 exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 151.51 mg·g −1 , surpassing many previously reported adsorbents. However, high-concentration As(V) induced substantial release of ATA from UiO-66-NH 2 –8, with concentrations ranging from 0.26 to 73.72 mg·L −1 , mirroring the trend of As(V) uptake. Linear regression analyses indicate a strong correlation ( R 2  = 0.97) between adsorbed As(V) and released linkers at concentrations ranging from 10 to 200 mg·L −1 . Mechanistic studies reveal that As(V) is primarily adsorbed through coordination with defect sites and electrostatic interactions below 5000 μg·L −1 . As the defect sites become saturated, the sorption mechanism shifts to ligand exchange at concentrations above 10 mg·L −1 . EXAFS analysis confirmed the formation of bidentate binuclear As Zr complexes on UiO-66-NH 2 –8. Practical application was demonstrated through fixed-bed column tests, where 100 mg of UiO-66-NH 2 –8 successfully treated ∼2.58 L of As(V)-spiked Yangtze River water to safe levels. This work provides a sustainable approach for designing defect-rich MOFs and demonstrates their strong potential fro practical arsenic remediation in natural water bodies.

Mengmeng Zhang,Kun Yang,Junshuo Cui,Haibiao Yu,Yuejiao Wang,Weijun Shan,Zhenning Lou,Ying Xiong

With the ever-increasing of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) in various high technology applications, efficient recovery of REEs from liquid sources is becoming significantly important. In this work, ZIF-8 and UiO-66-NH 2 (U6N) are combined to form a 3D-agaric like core-shell structure hybrid material (U6N@ZIF-8-20), which exhibits good performance in REEs extraction. Due to the abundant adsorption sites of ZIF-8 and the excellent water stability of UiO-66-NH 2 , 3D-agaric like U6N@ZIF-8-20 showed quick adsorption rate (only 10 min to reach equilibrium), high adsorption capacity and selectivity for REEs from water compared to other reported adsorbents. Maximum adsorption capacities of U6N@ZIF-8-20 for neodymium (Nd(III)), europium (Eu(III)), gadolinium (Gd(III)) and erbium (Er(III)) achieved to 249.90, 295.28, 316.22 and 340.95 mg g -1 , respectively. U6N@ZIF-8-20 has superiority in selective adsorption of REEs from Cd(II), Zn(II), Cu(II), Mn(II) and Co(II) coexistence solution. The order of adsorption capacities for REEs is in agreement with the order of their electronegativity, ionic radius and charge density. Moreover, U6N@ZIF-8-20 showed better water stability and recyclability than single MOF. Overall, MOF@MOF hybrid material has efficiency in REEs separation from solutions, and has great advantage in the application of wastewater treating.

Heterojunction engineering in titanium dioxide/NH2-MIL-125(titanium)/polyaniline cathodes enhances visible light-driven Photoelectrocatalytic rhodamine B degradation

Yanhua Liu,Yunpeng Luo,Geoffrey I.N. Waterhouse,Zhiming Zhang,Liangmin Yu

The rational design of charge-transfer interfaces is essential for high-performance photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) wastewater remediation. Herein, a novel ternary n-n-p heterojunction electrode, titanium dioxide/NH 2 -MIL-125(titanium)/polyaniline (TiO 2 /Ti-MOF/PANI), was successfully fabricated via a two-step hydrothermal and chemical polymerization strategy, followed by electrophoretic deposition. The optimized electrode exhibited a superior Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation efficiency of 96.1% and a total organic carbon mineralization rate of 67.19% within 70 min under visible light with a −0.8 V bias, significantly outperforming the individual photocatalytic and electrocatalytic processes. The superior performance originates from the synergistic integration of the ternary components. Ti-MOF and PANI broaden the visible-light response, promoting the generation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs under visible-light irradiation. Within this heterostructure, PANI functions as a narrow-band-gap sensitizer and p-type hole-transport layer, while n-type Ti-MOF provides a continuous pathway for rapid interfacial charge transfer. Meanwhile, n-type TiO 2 serves as a robust electron-transport backbone and offers stable surface active sites for subsequent redox reactions. The resulting n-n-p heterojunction establishes an internal electric field that, in conjunction with the applied negative bias, accelerates charge-carrier migration and accumulation at the electrode surface, thereby facilitating RhB degradation. Furthermore, PANI acts as an efficient conductive bridge, shortening electron-transport distances and reducing interfacial resistance. Mechanistic insights from radical trapping and electron spin resonance analysis confirm that •O 2 − and •OH are the predominant reactive species driving the oxidative cleavage of the xanthene chromophore. Overall, this work provides valuable design principles for multi-component PEC electrodes, offering insights into efficient environmental remediation.

UiO-66-NH2: An easily attainable and label-free turn-on probe for facile fluorescence sensing of alkaline phosphatase

Fujian Xu,Jinyi Zhang,Xiaoliang Zeng,Zhou Long,Xiandeng Hou

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is now a well acknowledged indicator for diverse clinical diseases correlated with its abnormal expression. Compared to the assays by traditional and lately emerging methods, the fluorescent (FL) sensing, especially in the turn-on mode, has become more favored due to its simplicity, low cost, and high sensitivity and precision. However, the feasible FL probes are still limited and suffering from poor biological compatibility, complex preparation, additional modification or function-alization. Herein, we found that one common metal–organic framework, UiO-66-NH 2 at nanoscale, could act as a new and label-free FL probe for facile sensing of ALP in the turn-on mode, based on the simple aid by phenyl phosphate which could be hydro-lyzed by ALP, with the product of phosphate ion enhancing the FL emission of UiO-66-NH 2 via simple adsorption. Unlike many other FL probes in the turn-on mode, it was unnecessary to quench the FL of the probes in advance, greatly simplifying the sensor design. Moreover, by use of a new method based on dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), the UiO-66-NH 2 could be prepared in 10 min, much shorter than that (usually hours) for preparing most other FL probes for ALP assay. The limit of detection was 0.4 U L -1 , superior or at least rivalrous to the previously reported ones, and the ALP assay was also accomplished for real serum samples, with the analytical results highly consistent with those obtained by the clinical procedures, revealing its high practical utility.

In situ construction of MXene@UiO-66-NH2 composite membranes with optimized catalytic sites for enhanced phenol electrocatalytic degradation

Yinghe Ma,Guodong Yin,Zhongqi Li,Wenyi Wang,Ao Shen,Meiqi Ye,Yuxia Jia,Jinsong Suo

To tackle the critical challenge of efficient treatment for phenolic industrial wastewater, MXene@UiO-66-NH 2 composite powder was synthesized via a self-assembly approach. The powder was then immobilized on the surface of a PEI-modified PES substrate through vacuum filtration, thus successfully fabricating MXene@UiO-66-NH 2 /PES composite membranes. Characterizations including SEM, XRD and XPS confirmed that hydrogen bonds and weak coordination bonds formed between MXene and UiO-66-NH 2 . These interactions effectively suppressed the stacking of MXene and agglomeration of UiO-66-NH 2 , and constructed continuous electron transport pathways and ordered porous diffusion channels. The optimal performance was achieved when the UiO-66-NH 2 loading of 75 mg: cyclic voltammetry tests revealed high current density and favorable reversible redox behavior, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results indicated minimal charge transfer and diffusion resistance. In phenol degradation experiments, the degradation efficiency remained consistently above 90% within 5 h, and the composite membrane maintained excellent stability even after 72 h of cyclic operation. Active species quenching experiments verified that the core degradation mechanism of the composite membrane relies on the synergistic effect of superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH): ·O 2 − initiated the initial activation of the benzene ring, while ·OH drove the subsequent deep oxidation and mineralization processes. This work realizes the integration of membrane separation and electrocatalytic degradation functions, breaks through the performance trade-off bottleneck of MXene-MOF composite membranes, and provides a novel and scalable preparation strategy for high-performance catalytic membranes, as well as technical support and a theoretical paradigm for the advanced treatment of phenolic industrial wastewater.

Design and Performance Evaluation of Amino Acid-Decorated UiO-66-NH2/Pebax Mixed Matrix Membranes for Efficient CO2 Separation

Jing Xiaochun,Zhao Wei,Bei Pengzhi,Liu Hongjing,Dai Yan,Zhao Xu,Zhang Chengpeng,Shi Meiling,Zhang Ying

To advance CO 2 separation technologies, lysine-decorated UiO-66-NH 2 (LYS-UiO-66-NH 2 ) fillers were synthesized via a lysine modification and integrated into a Pebax-1657 matrix, yielding high-performance mixed matrix membranes. The carboxyl groups of the amino acids provide nucleophilic sites, promoting stronger interactions between LYS-UiO-66-NH 2 and CO 2 molecules. Moreover, the N–H and C = O bonds present in LYS-UiO-66-NH 2 facilitate hydrogen bonding with complementary C = O and N–H functional groups in the Pebax polymer backbone. These interactions significantly improve filler–polymer compatibility, enhancing interfacial adhesion and achieving uniform filler dispersion within the membrane matrix. Characterizations conducted via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed successful synthesis of the LYS-UiO-66-NH 2 filler particles, exhibiting high crystallinity, uniform distribution within the polymer matrix, superior thermal stability, and absence of discernible interfacial defects. Compared to pristine Pebax membranes, the LYS-UiO-66-NH 2 /Pebax MMM containing 3 wt% filler exhibited a CO 2 permeability of 104.62 Barrer and a CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 85.75 at 30℃ and 0.1 MPa, corresponding to increases of 74.16% and 75.61%, respectively, thereby surpassing the 2008 Robeson upper bound. This work demonstrates the considerable potential of the designed MMMs for highly efficient CO 2 separation.
