Flat Na 2 S 2 O 8 @PVDF-g-PDMAEMA/PVDF inorganic–organic composite membrane was prepared by sequential use of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), non-solvent induced phase inversion separation (NIPS) and post-dipping treatment. The membrane was tested in a membrane chemical reactor (MCR) system for concurrent advanced oxidation and ultrafiltration of ofloxacin (OFLX) under UV irradiation. Results indicated that the production of sulfate radicals (SO 4 − ) from persulfate can achieve 54% removal efficiency of OFLX, outperforming single advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) or ultrafiltration treatment. The best performance, was secondary to the combination of high redox potential of the SO 4 − , hydrophilicity of N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and molecular cutoff of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane. This study also identified factors related to successfully preparing composite membranes with concurrent positive charges and hydrophilicity. Characterization using XRD, FTIR and EDS showed that introducing PDMAEMA into the polymer mixture and post-dipping were both required to obtain a multifunctional membrane, which can electrostatically attract negative S 2 O 8 2− species. Judging from SEM results, the formation mechanisms of the composite membrane structure were derived from instantaneous liquid–liquid demixing.

This study involves the development of a series of primary and secondary crosslinked anion exchange membranes (AEMs) within PVDF semi-interpenetrating networks, establishing a stable ion exchange structure. The optimal AEM, identified as DAEM-3, exhibits an ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 0.92 mmol·g −1 , a solute diffusion rate of 0.0076 mmol/(cm 2 ·h·mol/L). Remarkably, the desalination rate could reach 95.66 % within 180 min at a current density of 15 mA·cm −2 , with the current efficiency of 81.12 %, surpassing the performance of the commercial membrane (AMX). Furthermore, the concentration rate reaches 17.00 % during a 390-minute process at a current density of 50 mA·cm −2 , highlighting the ability of secondary cross-linking to simultaneously regulate IEC and the degree of cross-linking for improved densification and ion exchange performance. Moreover, the relatively tight cross-linked structure could be found to reduce water permeability and slow down the rate of spontaneous solute diffusion, making it a promising advancement in ED desalination and concentration technologies applied in zero liquid discharge.

As the candidate for electrolyte in lithium metal batteries , quasi-solid electrolytes have been affected by the growth of lithium dendrites and the continuous reaction between lithium and electrolyte. Herein, we introduce a quasi-solid electrolyte, ZIF-67@ZIF-8/PVDF-HFP (PHMx), with multi-stage ion transport channels. Additionally, we have developed Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs) materials that possess a “cage” structure, which is defined as dual-MC nanoparticles . PVDF-HFP in PHMx serves as mechanical backbone, with dual-MC nanoparticles densely and uniformly distributed within the PVDF-HFP. The synergistic effect of the microporous structure of the PVDF-HFP and that of the dual-MC nanoparticles is utilized to construct multi-stage ion transport channels. PHM9 achieves uniform Li + deposition and inhibits the continuous reaction between lithium and electrolyte. Therefore, PHM9, not only achieves high ionic conductivity of 3.2 × 10 −3 S cm −1 but also remains stable for 1600 h during Lithium-symmetric cycling. Lithium metal battery, assembled with LiFePO 4 as the cathode material , exhibited stable cycling for 400 cycles at a rate of 0.2 C, demonstrating a capacity retention rate of 86.6 %. Similarly, the lithium metal battery utilizing LiCoO 2 as the cathode material demonstrated stable cycling for 200 cycles at a rate of 0.2 C, exhibiting an impressive capacity retention rate of 96.7 %.

Flexible nanocomposite dielectrics with inorganic nanofillers exhibit great potential for energy storage devices in advanced microelectronics applications. However, high loading of inorganic nanofillers in the matrix results in an inhomogeneous electric field distribution, thereby hindering the improvement of the energy storage density (Ue) of the dielectrics. Herein, we proposed a strategy that utilized (00l)-oriented barium titanate (BT) single-crystal platelets to fabricate trilayered nanocomposite dielectrics for energy storage applications. The trilayered nanocomposites consisted of two high-permittivity layers of (Ta2O5, Al2O3) codoped TiO2 nanoparticles (Ta-Al@TiO2 nps) dispersed in a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix to facilitate large electric displacement and a middle layer of (00l)-oriented BT single-crystal platelets to provide high breakdown strength. Hence, the trilayered PVDF/Ta-Al@TiO2 nps/BT single-crystal platelet nanocomposite film attains an outstanding Ue of 16.9 J cm–3 at 370 kV mm–1, which is ∼625% higher than that of the single-layer PVDF/Ta-Al@TiO2 nps film. Finite element simulation further clarified that the successive inner layer of highly (00l)-oriented BT single-crystal platelets could effectively restrain the propagation of electrical treeing in trilayered nanocomposites. This research offers an effective approach for developing flexible dielectric capacitors with an excellent energy storage performance.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymers are considered as promising high energy density capacitor dielectrics because of their high dielectric constants and melt processability. However, their industrialization and practicalization suffer from low breakdown strengths and high leakage conduction losses. Hence, it is of great necessity to develop dielectrics with a high energy storage capability. Herein, we fabricated biaxially oriented nanocomposite PVDF films decorated with ultralow contents of surface-functionalized boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) by combining melt blending and biaxial orientation technology. The functionalized BNNSs exhibited an ideal horizontal distribution. Both experimental characterization and phase-field simulation validate that the horizontally distributed BNNSs effectively inhibit the propagation of the dielectric breakdown phase and reduce the leakage conduction loss of the composite films. The breakdown field strength of the nanocomposite film doped with only 0.1 wt % functionalized BNNSs reached up to 755.94 MV/m, which is 16.8% higher than that of the pristine biaxially oriented PVDF film. Meanwhile, a maximum discharge energy density of 15.66 J/cm3 was attained, which was 1.57 times that of the pristine counterpart (9.98 J/cm3). This study sheds light on the fundamental understanding of dielectric breakdown behavior of polymer nanocomposites and provides a promising strategy for the scaled-up fabrication of dielectric capacitors with high insulating and low loss properties.

In recent years, research on piezoelectric pressure sensing has attracted worldwide attention, as eagerly demanded by the development of wearable electronics. However, the current piezoelectric pressure sensors are unable to detect forces along different bending directions with a high resolution, thus limiting their applications in some typical scenarios. To address this issue, this study designed a novel composite structure with ZnO nanorods loaded with Ag nanoparticles (ZnONRs@Ag) and then embedded in highly oriented polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fibers. Due to its unique orientation, the pressure sensor exhibits anisotropy, accurately identifying forces along distinct bending directions (such as perpendicular, parallel, or twisting). The optimized PVDF/ZnONRs@Ag device presents the peak power density of 308.1 nW cm–2 and a sensitivity as high as 0.52 V N–1 and remains stable after 7000 cycles at 1.4 Hz. The highly oriented piezoelectric devices are utilized to monitor various human movements and harvest energy from them. This research provides a viable method for manufacturing self-powered directional pressure sensors, contributing to the advancement of wearable technology and energy harvesting applications.

Au BPs/MXene mixtures were composited with PVDF membranes by vacuum filtration, which enabled the sensitive detection. It combined electromagnetic mechanism and chemical mechanism to achieve a synergistic enhancement of the detection, resulting in a good stability of the SERS substrate. With fluorescent dyes including rhodamine 6G and methylene blue as templates for the SERS sensor, the SERS substrate possessed high sensitivity and reproducibility on account of the strong interactions between the dye molecules and the Au BPs/MXene. In addition, the photochemical performance of the composite membrane material for rhodamine 6G and methylene blue was investigated, which demonstrated the potential of AuBPs/MXene@PVDF membrane for photochemical applications. The study of the SERS detection and photochemical degradation performance of the composite membrane material in different water sources demonstrated that the excellent testing capability of the AuBPs/MXene@PVDF membrane material can be used for reliable and highly sensitive monitoring and application in water environment analysis.

In polymer dielectric energy storage, even polymers with high glass transition temperatures suffer significant degradation in energy storage performance as temperature increases, primarily due to a sharp rise in electrical conduction loss. In this study, we employ atomic layer deposition to coat the surface of a PEI/PVDF blend film with an Al 2 O 3 inorganic layer to enhance its energy storage performance at high temperatures. The influence of the inorganic layer's thickness on high-temperature energy storage performance is thoroughly analyzed. Experimental results and finite element simulations demonstrate that an ultra-thin Al 2 O 3 inorganic layer with the thickness of 50 nm effectively reduces leakage current density and mitigates space charge accumulation within the PEI/PVDF blends, thereby improving the high-temperature energy storage performance of the blends. Notably, under an applied electric field of 500 MV/m at 150 °C, the PEI/PVDF blend film with 50 nm Al 2 O 3 layer achieved a discharge energy density of 5.45 J/cm 3 and a charge-discharge efficiency of 97.75 %.

In order to fully utilize the advantages of expandable graphite (large specific surface area and porous structure), a solvent-free method was used to provide a supporting skeleton for expandable graphite through melting, bonding and solidification of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). Based on its porous structure and enhanced mechanical stability, the formed PVDF/expandable graphite composite foam, amounts of functional groups were introduced throughout the foam (outside on the surface and inner side in the expandable graphite) by deposition of tannic acid (TA) and dopamine (DA), endowing it selective adsorption characteristics. The functioned foam exhibited excellent dynamic dye adsorption capacity by capturing dye molecules firmly through π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding, and charge attraction between the functional groups and dyes. Furthermore, with low zeta potential (-24.9 mV), the functional groups showed selective adsorption properties resulting in rapid separation of cationic dyes and anionic dyes. The functionalized PVDF/expandable graphite composite foam contact these two materials together in order to complement each other's advantages, showing a new research orientation for the treatment of different types of dyestuff wastewater.

In this paper, the effect of the composition of a nonsolvent bath on the physicochemical properties of the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membranes were comprehensively investigated using the nonsolvent-induced phase separation method. Three additives (ethanol, glycerol, or NaCl) were added to the water coagulation bath respectively to obtain different membranes. It was found that the microstructure of the membranes changed from finger-like structure to the sponge-like structure with the increase of additives concentration, which successfully improved the retention and mechanical properties of the membranes. In addition, the membrane surface became smoother and more hydrophilic. The membrane fabricated in 30 wt% glycerol bath exhibited outstanding comprehensive properties of retention and anti-fouling, with a water flux of 243.5 L/(m 2 h), a bovine serum albumin rejection of more than 90%, and a flux recovery rate of 97%. From mechanism analysis, the addition of ethanol, glycerol, or NaCl to the coagulation bath altered the thermodynamic stability of the polymer system, and slowed down the rate of solvent and nonsolvent diffusion from a kinetic perspective. This research provides important clues for optimizing the membrane properties, such as flux, rejection, and strength.

The development of lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) with high energy density and safety is considered a top priority for the next generation of rechargeable batteries. However, the mitigation of the inevitable reaction between lithium and the liquid electrolyte (LE), as well as the subsequent formation of Li dendrites, poses a crucial challenge that needs to be addressed. Upgrading traditional LEs serves as a pivotal strategy in achieving this objective. Here, we report a ZIF-8@SiO 2 /PVDF-HFP (ZSPH) quasi-solid electrolyte (QSE) with ultra-multistage pore crosslinked network structure. The interconnected micro-stage pore structure in a honeycomb-like morphology of polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) and the rich multistage pore structure of nanoscale SiO 2 “armored” zeolite imidazolium ester backbone-8 (ZIF-8@SiO 2 ) collectively establish a multi-stage ion transport channel. This unique structure facilitates appreciable ionic conductivity (2.21 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at 30 °C) and provides a wide and stable electrochemical window (approximately 5.0 V). The Li/ZSPH9-LiPF 6 /Li quasi-solid-state cell demonstrates an impressive longevity of over 1800 h at a current density of 0.2 mA cm −2 . The high compatibility of the interface between electrode and ZSPH QSE and effective inhibition of Li dendrites growth create synergistic effects, which make it possible to realize high energy density and safe LMBs.

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are routinely regarded as potential candidates to replace conventional lithium-ion liquid electrolytes due to their high safety and energy density. Poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(vinylidene fluoride)/lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (PVDF/PEO/LiTFSi) SPEs were prepared by a one-step electrospinning process and utilized in lithium metal batteries in this study. The electrospinning process enhanced the compatibility between PEO and PVDF, and induced the α to β -phase crystalline transition of PVDF. Consequently, the continuity of the conductive phase, the solubility and the migration ability of lithium ions within the polymer matrix were improved. Compared to PEO/PVDF/LiTFSi SPE prepared by a solution casting method, the electrospun SPE exhibited superior electrochemical performances at the same composition, achieving a lithium-ion transference number of 0.64 at room temperature and 0.60 at 60 °C. The assembled LiFePO 4 /SPE/Li cell shows a stable capacity of 112 mAh g −1 with a retaining capacity of 105 mAh g −1 after 400 cycles at the current density of 1 C at 60 °C, and the Coulombic efficiency is 100%.
