Nonaqueous Synthesis of Pd/PdO-Functionalized NiFe2O4 Nanoparticles Enabled Enhancing n-Butanol Detection

Hongyang Wu,Chen Chen

The efficient detection of n-butanol, which is in demand for highly sensitive materials, is essential for multiple applications. A nonaqueous method was applied to prepare NiFe2O4nanoparticles (NPs) using benzyl alcohol as a solvent, which shows a size of 7.9 ± 1.6 nm and a large surface area of 82.23 m2/g. To further improve the sensing performance for n-butanol, Pd/PdO functionalization was sensitized with NiFe2O4NPs. Gas sensing results demonstrate that the Pd/PdO-NiFe2O4exhibits an enhanced response of 36.9 to 300 ppm n-butanol and a fast response and recovery time (18.2/17.6 s) at 260 °C. Furthermore, the Pd/PdO-NiFe2O4-based sensor possesses a good linear relationship between responses and the n-butanol concentration from 1 to 1000 ppm, and great selectivity against other volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The excellent sensing enhancement is attributed to the catalytic effects of Pd/PdO, the increase of oxygen vacancies, and the formation of heterojunction between PdO and NiFe2O4. Thus, this study offers an effective route for the synthesis of Pd/PdO-functionalized NiFe2O4NPs to achieve n-butanol detection with excellent sensing performance.

Preparation of Pd nanoparticles modified hollow TiO2 dodecahedrons for highly selective hydrogen detection

Shaohua Cui,Yu Sun,Chen Chen,Hongru Hong,Jiarui Huang

It is important to develop hydrogen gas sensors with low power consumption, rapid response and high sensitivity/selectivity to monitor hydrogen leakage. Here, TiO 2 hollow dodecahedrons are successfully synthesized using ammonium tungsten phosphate hydrate dodecahedrons as hard templates. Then, Pd/TiO 2 hollow dodecahedral composites are prepared by loading Pd nanoparticles onto TiO 2 hollow dodecahedrons by liquid phase reduction method. Both TiO 2 and Pd/TiO 2 hollow dodecahedrons are fabricated into gas sensors, and their sensing performance is evaluated. The results show that the Pd/TiO 2 hollow dodecahedral sensor exhibits a highly sensitive response (3.5) to 200 ppm hydrogen at a low working temperature of 100 °C. In addition, the Pd/TiO 2 hollow dodecahedrons also show a short response/recovery time (19 s/5.5 s), a good linear relationship (R 2 =0.995), good repeatability and excellent stability for hydrogen detection. The excellent gas sensing performance of the Pd/TiO 2 hollow dodecahedrons is attributed to their hollow structure and the catalytic sensitization of Pd nanoparticles. This work demonstrates that a new preparation route of sensing material for highly selective and selective hydrogen detection.

Self-Etching Pd–Pb Nanoparticles with Controllable Tensile Strain for C2 Alcohol Oxidation

Chen Chen,Xianzhuo Lao,Junlong Li,Yidian Wang,Kuikui Wang,Dongxiang Li,Peizhi Guo

Pd-based nanocatalysts hold significant promise for application in alkaline direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs). To address the challenges of low Pd atom utilization and poor reaction kinetics in conventional Pd-based catalysts, a self-etching strategy has been developed to synthesize Pd3Pb1 nanoparticles (NPs) with tunable size and abundant tensile strain. The nanoparticles demonstrated a markedly enhanced electrocatalytic performance. Pd3Pb1 NPs-1 exhibited a current density of 2565 mA mgPd–1 for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). Following self-etching, smaller Pd3Pb1 NPs-2 were synthesized, achieving a higher current density of 2820 mA mgPd–1 for EOR. Even after prolonged cyclic voltammetry (CV) testing, the Pd3Pb1 NPs-2 exhibited excellent stability. The high mass activity is attributed to a favorable balance between active intermediates and blocking species at the catalyst interface. This work presents a promising strategy for constructing nanocatalysts with tunable alloying degrees, offering highly efficient catalysts for fuel cell applications. Moreover, this study provides a reliable approach to preparing monodisperse nanocatalysts with controllable size and morphology through self-etching techniques.

Microstructure regulation and photocatalytic H2 evolution mechanism of novel MCNTs-Zn0.3Cd0.7S/Pd composites

Yuan Ma,Bingzhu Wang,Haiwang Wang,Xingyuan Zhao,Yihao Zhao,Songyang Wu,Changxiang Xie

Zinc cadmium sulfide solid solution as a photocatalytic material has the advantages of narrow band gap and suitable conduction band potential, but the fast rate of photogenerated electron-hole recombination is a non-negligible problem. Inspired by the efficient transfer of bioelectric current between neuronal cells, we achieved the modulation of 1% MCNTs-Zn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S microscopic morphology by regulating the ratio of oleic acid and oleylamine during the hydrothermal process, and further constructed the photogenerated carrier transport pathway through the introduction of Pd to improve the rate of hydrogen production from photolytic water. The results showed that the addition of oleic acid and oleylamine resulted in higher crystalline aggregation and smaller peripheral size of the composite materials. The incorporation of both carbon nanotubes and Pd gives the composite's a high photoresponse as well as a low impedance. These are reflected in the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate: the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of 1% MCNTs-Zn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S/4% Pd reaches 3.889 mmol/g/h, and its photocatalytic rate is 8.89 times higher than that of Zn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S.

Enhanced electrocatalytic dechlorination of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid on in situ prepared Pd-anchored Ni(OH)2 bifunctional electrodes: synergistic effect between H* formation on Ni(OH)2 and dechlorination steps on Pd

Shuang Song,Qiuxiang Liu,Jinhui Fang,Weiting Yu

The reductive dechlorination of chlorinated organic compounds (COCs) is very important to reduce the toxicity of waste effluents produced from pharmaceutical, electronics, dyestuff, pesticide, paper, and plastics industries. Electrochemical dechlorination as a green technology under mild reaction conditions is widely used in the reductive dechlorination of COCs using Pd as the electrode. Currently, the challenges of this method are the need to use large Pd loadings and the low dechlorination efficiency. Efforts were made in this work to reduce the loading of Pd and improve the efficiency using 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) as a probe molecule for COCs in dechlorination. In this study, Pd-anchored Ni(OH)2/Ni-foam bifunctional electrodes were prepared in situ and for the first time applied in the reductive dechlorination of COCs. The results indicate that the dechlorination efficiency of 2,4-D can be enhanced on Pd-anchored Ni(OH)2/Ni-foam bifunctional electrodes even at a low Pd loading (<2 mg cm−2). A synergistic effect is found for 2,4-D dechlorination: H* formation on Ni(OH)2 and dechlorination steps on Pd. The enhanced dechlorination efficiency might be related to the shortened transport route between Ni(OH)2 and Pd active centers for H*.

Gastric cancer-derived exosomes facilitate pulmonary metastasis by activating ERK-mediated immunosuppressive macrophage polarization

Juan Gu,Xu Chu,Yujia Huo,Chaoyi Liu,Qingge Chen,Shengnan Hu,Yanyan Pei,Pu Ding,Sen Pang,Ming Wang

Gastric cancer (GC) with pulmonary metastasis is one of the deadliest diseases in the world; however, the underlying pathological mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets remain to be elucidated. As exosomes play indispensable roles in the formation of premetastatic niches (PMN) and cancer metastasis. Therefore, investigating the underlying mechanisms of exosome-mediated pulmonary metastasis of GC may shed new light on identifying novel therapeutic targets for GC treatment. GC-derived exosomes were isolated from the conditioned medium of mouse forestomach carcinoma (MFC) cell line. The effects of MFC-derived exosomes on pulmonary macrophage polarization were analyzed by reverse- transcription polymerase chain reaction and flow cytometry. Expression of PD-L1 and other proteins was evaluated by Western blot. Exosomal microRNAs (miRNAs) were analyzed by microarray. GC-derived exosomes (GC-exo) accumulated in high numbers in the lungs and were ingested by macrophages. The extracellular-signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling pathway was activated by GC-exo, inducing macrophage immunosuppressive-phenotype differentiation and increased PD-L1 expression. miRNA-sequencing identified 130 enriched miRNAs in GC-exo. Among the enriched miRNAs, miR-92a-3p plays a major role in activating ERK signaling via inhibition of PTEN expression. In addition, inhibiting ERK signaling with PD98059 significantly reduced the expression of PD-L1 in macrophages and, therefore, reversed the immunosuppressive PMN and inhibited the colonization of GC cells in the lungs. This study identified a novel mechanism of GC-exo mediated PD-L1 expression in lung macrophages that facilitates lung PMN formation and GC pulmonary metastasis, which also provided a potential therapeutic target for GC with pulmonary metastasis treatment.

Inhibition of inosine metabolism of the gut microbiota decreases testosterone secretion in the testis

Lei Tang,Xizhong Yang,Mengting Zhou,Lingxin Feng,Cuijie Ji,Jie Liang,Bei Zhang,Ruowu Shen,Luoyang Wang

Growing evidence indicates that gut microbiota is involved in the regulation of the host’s sex hormone levels, such as through interfering with the sex hormone metabolism in the intestine. However, if gut microbiota or its metabolites directly influence the sex hormone biosynthesis in the gonad remains largely unknown. Our previous study showed that colistin, as a narrow-spectrum antibiotic, can significantly downregulate the serum testosterone levels and thus enhance the antitumor efficiency of anti-PD-L1 in male mice; however, the underlying mechanism for the regulation of the host’s testosterone levels remains uninvestigated. In the present study, we analyzed the impact of colistin on the immune microenvironment of the testis as well as the composition and metabolism of gut microbiota in male mice. Our results showed that colistin has an impact on the immune microenvironment of the testis and can downregulate serum testosterone levels in male mice through inhibition of Akkermansia, leading to destroyed inosine metabolism. Supplement with inosine can restore testosterone secretion probably by prompting the recovery of the intestinal mucus barrier and the serum lipopolysaccharides levels. All these findings reveal a new pathway for the regulation of the host’s sex hormone levels by gut microbiota.

Trace Pd–Functionalized SnO2 Porous Ceramic for Enhanced Catalytic Combustion of Low-Concentration Methane

Jixin Shi,Peipei Zhang,Fawang Liu,Tiantian Su,Jingsan Xu,Chao Lin,Xiaopeng Li,Wei Luo

The development of advanced catalytic technologies for the combustion of low-concentration methane is crucial for minimizing unburned CH 4 emissions, consequently improving the eco-efficiency of natural gas vehicles and power plants. The integration of effective catalysts into existing systems with minimal modifications is of paramount importance. Porous ceramic composites offer a promising alternative to traditional powder catalysts due to their high surface area, excellent thermal stability, adjustable porosity, and prolonged catalytic durability. This study introduces a trace Pd–incorporated SnO 2 porous ceramic catalyst (Pd/SnO 2 ) fabricated using the spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique. The synthesis process uses a NaCl salt template to create a porous structure and graphite to improve Pd loading and dispersion on the SnO 2 surface. An optimized 10 wt.% graphite-decorated Pd/SnO 2 porous ceramic catalyst, containing a trace Pd loading of 0.17 wt.%, achieved a low T 90 of 427°C during methane reforming tests and maintained stable catalytic performance after multiple temperature cycling and over 900 min of continuous operation. Enhanced activity stems from two synergies: first, graphite-mediated uniform PdO dispersion boosting active site accessibility and second, PdO–SnO 2 interfacial charge transfer generating oxygen-deficient sites, accelerating CH 4 dissociation and stabilizing Pd 2+ against deactivation. These findings highlight the potential of this approach for use in the development of durable and efficient ceramic composite–based catalysts for environmental applications.

Pd Nanoparticles Immobilized on Bacterial Cellulose: A Sustainable Catalyst for Selective Hydrogenation of Vanillin

Biao Zhang,Fangfang Wang,Ya Ma,Lu Yao,Xudong Liu,Zhicheng Jiang,Bi Shi

Catalyst supports critically affect the efficiency and selectivity of supported metal catalysts. In this investigation, bacterial cellulose (BC) produced through bacterial fermentation was used as a catalyst support, with Pd 2+ loaded on BC and then reduced to prepare a supported Pd catalyst (Pd/BC). Owing to its nanofibrous structure and abundant hydroxyl groups exposed on the surface of BC, BC adsorbed more Pd 2+ via electrostatic interaction and promoted the dispersion of Pd particles, resulting in their smaller particle size. The high crystallinity index of BC endowed the catalyst with high thermal stability, enabling its application in the catalytic hydrogenation of vanillin (a lignin-derived platform chemical) under mild reaction conditions. Strong hydrogen bonding interaction between C6-OH on BC surface and the aldehyde group of vanillin facilitated the hydrogenation rate of vanillin. The hydrogenation of vanillin over the 3 wt% Pd/BC catalyst at 60 °C under 1.5 MPa H 2 for 2 h resulted in 98.45% vanillin conversion and 97.85% yield of vanillyl alcohol, with high recycling stability, and good catalytic universality, effectively catalyzing the hydrogenation of different lignin-derived aldehydes. This study paves the way for the application of cellulose with polyhydroxy groups in catalysis.

Preparation and catalytic properties of Pd nanoparticles supported on micro-crystal DUT-67 MOFs

Gui-lin Zhuang,Jia-qi Bai,Li Tan,Hong-liang Huang,Yi-fen Gao,Xing Zhong,Chong-li Zhong,Jian-guo Wang

Zr-based MOFs usually feature exceptionally high thermal and chemical stability, which suggests that composites of noble metals and Zr-based MOFs could have wide industrial applications. In this work, we report the synthesis and characterization of Pd nanoparticles (of three different loadings: 0.3%, 0.5% and 1.0%) supported on micro-crystal DUT-67 MOFs. Via SEM, TEM and XPS characterization methods, it was found that the Pd nanoparticles were well dispersed on the interface of the MOF micro-crystals, with a diameter of 3.5 nm, and both the dangling organic groups and the cavities of the MOFs play important roles. Furthermore, PXRD, IR, TGA and N2 adsorption measurements confirmed that the composites are very robust. Studies on the catalytic properties indicated that they have good catalytic performance with a conversion of 99% and selectivity of 89% in the Suzuki coupling reaction. By a series of explorations, we found the best catalytic conditions are an ethanol–water mixed solvent as the medium, K2CO3 as the base and a temperature of 70 °C. Moreover, good catalytic properties were also shown for the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene, where the optimum temperature was 60 °C, and a conversion of 99% and selectivity of 99% were achieved.

Fast room-temperature hydrogenation of nitroaromatics on Pd nanocrystal-boron cluster/graphene oxide nanosheets

Yuwen Wang,Zenghui Bi,Xue Zhao,Abdukader Abdukayum,Shuxing Zhou,Haibo Zhang,Jianbing Chen,Fang Tan,Anran Chen,Thomas Wågberg,Guangzhi Hu

The reduction of nitroaromatics to aminoaromatics is essential for fine chemical production and effective sewage treatment. However, the activity of an external catalyst is essential for the reaction. In this study, Pd nanocrystals were anchored in situ on two-dimensional graphene oxide (GO), which acted as a catalyst support with high specific surface area. The oxygen-containing groups on the surface of GO bonded to the functionally rich boron clusters through hydrogen bonding interactions. A mildly reducible closed-dodecahydrododecaboric acid anion cluster ( closo‑ [B 12 H 12 ] 2– ) was employed as the target site. The mild reducibility of closo‑ [B 12 H 12 ] 2– resulted in a wide dispersion of ultrafine Pd nanocrystals on GO. Under ambient conditions, Pd/BGO rapidly hydrogenated nitroaromatics, such as 4-nitrophenol, to aminoaromatics with approximately 100% efficiency. Moreover, Pd/BGO retained its high catalytic activity for the hydrogenation/reduction of 4-nitrophenol after five catalytic cycles. Therefore, Pd/BGO could be a promising and economically viable candidate for various practical applications. The proposed innovative preparation strategy and highly efficient catalytic activity suggested the effective performance of closo‑ [B 12 H 12 ] 2– as nanometal nucleation target sites. In addition to providing an alternate route for preparing supported nanometals, this study presents a stable and efficient catalyst for the hydrogenation of nitroaromatics.

Enhanced acetone-sensing properties to ppb detection level using Au/Pd-doped ZnO nanorod

Jinyu Huang,Jiaxi Zhou,Zhenhua Liu,Xuejin Li,Youfu Geng,Xiaoqing Tian,Yu Du,Zhengfang Qian

ZnO nanorods doped by different amount of Au and Pd were successfully synthesized via one-step microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The structure, morphology and composition of the as-synthesized products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Gas sensors based on ZnO and Au/Pd-doped ZnO nanorods were fabricated and their gas sensing properties were tested for various gases. The results indicate that the incorporation of Au and Pd elements can greatly enhance the gas sensing properties of ZnO sensors. Specifically, the sensor based on 2.0 wt% Au-doped ZnO exhibits the highest response, quickest response and recovery characteristics, best selectivity, low operating temperature, as well as good long-term stability towards acetone. After incorporation of Au (2.0 wt%), the detection limit of Au-doped ZnO sensor decreases to 5 ppb and the response increases to 17 under 1 ppm acetone at 150℃, which is more than triple the responses of ZnO sensor. The results demonstrate that the developed Au-doped ZnO sensor has great potential for ppb-level acetone detection in human breath for diagnosing diabetes.
