A versatile AIE probe with mitochondria targeting for dual-channel detection of superoxide anion and viscosity

Wei Liu,Yan Wang,Tengfei Wang,Liwen Wang,Sheng Hu,Dating Tian

Abnormal viscosity and excessive superoxide anion (O 2 •- ) levels in living cells often cause a series of biological dysfunction and oxidative damage. However, a great challenge remains in quickly and conveniently detecting the viscosity and O 2 •- levels in living cells. Herein, we fabricated a versatile aggregation-induced emission (AIE) probe with mitochondria targeting, DTPB, for dual-imaging of viscosity and O 2 •- level in living cells with two different channels. The obtained DTPB contained a diphenyl phosphinic acid unit responsive to O 2 •- , a unit with twisted intramolecular charge trans (TICT) function responsive to viscosity, and a pyridine cation unit with mitochondria targeting. The results showed that DTPB exhibited a remarkable response to viscosity with a near-infrared emission peak at 671 nm and was highly sensitive to O 2 •- levels with an emission peak at 587 nm. The dual-channel probe has great application prospects in the visual diagnosis of cancer and related diseases.

Anisotropic cellulose nanocrystalline sponge sheets with ultrahigh water fluxes and oil/water selectivity

Aihua Qiao,Renliang Huang,Jiangjiexing Wu,Wei Qi,Rongxin Su

Oily sewage caused by oil spill accidents has become a severe problem in the last decades. Hence, two-dimensional sheet-like filter materials for oil/water separation have received widespread attention. Porous sponge materials were developed using cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as raw materials. They are environmentally friendly and easy to prepare, with high flux and separation efficiency. The 1,2,3,4-butane tetracarboxylic acid cross-linked anisotropic cellulose nanocrystalline sponge sheet (B-CNC) exhibited ultrahigh water fluxes driven by gravity alone, depending on the aligned structure of channels and the rigidity of CNCs. Meanwhile, the sponge gained superhydrophilic/underwater superhydrophobic wettability with an underwater oil contact angle of up to 165.7° due to its ordered micro/nanoscale structure. B-CNC sheets displayed high oil/water selectivity without additional material doping or chemical modification. For oil/water mixtures, high separation fluxes of approximately 100,000 L·m −2 ·h −1 and separation efficiencies of up to 99.99 % were obtained. For a Tween 80-stabilized toluene-in-water emulsion, the flux reached >50,000 L·m −2 ·h −1 , and the separation efficiency was above 99.7 %. B-CNC sponge sheets showed significantly higher fluxes and separation efficiencies than other bio-based two-dimensional materials. This research provides a facile and straightforward fabrication method of environmental-friendly B-CNC sponges for rapid, selective oil/water separation.

Visible-light-driven selective cleavage of CC bonds in lignin model substrates using carbon nitride-supported ruthenium single-atom catalyst

Jun Deng,Chi Zhou,Yue Yang,Bing Nan,Lin Dong,Lingchao Cai,Lina Li,Zhu-Jun Wang,Xiaofei Yang,Zupeng Chen

The selective cleavage of the C C bonds in lignin is highly pursued to obtain aromatic monomers from renewable resources but remains challenging due to their high dissociation energies and steric hindrance between bulky aromatic groups. Herein, a mesoporous carbon nitride-supported ruthenium single-atom photocatalyst (Ru 1 /MCN) is reported for efficient oxidative C α -C β bonds scissoring towards lignin β -O-4 model compounds with high activity and selectivity under visible–light irradiation and room temperature. With this strategy, a nearly total conversion of > 99% and > 98% selectivity of C C bond cleavage can be achieved upon 2–phenoxy–1–phenylethanol. In-depth investigations verify that the C β -H extraction by photogenerated holes is the critical step of the transformation, which directly generates the C β radical intermediates and thus promotes the selective C α -C β bonds breaking by coupling with superoxide radicals induced by photogenerated electrons. This work explores the potential of single-atom catalysts for photocatalytic production of aromatics from renewable biomass feedstocks.

A green method for preparing mechanically robust poly(propylene carbonate) with full biodegradability via incorporating hybrid natural filler

Xuhui Zhang,Guangyao Ji,Jianing Yang,Jie Jiang,Jianzhong He,Ting Li,Jing Huang,Mingqing Chen,Weifu Dong

Strong, tough, and biodegradable polymers from renewable raw materials are of great importance in circumventing environmental issues. Poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC), a biodegradable carbon dioxide (CO 2 )/propylene oxide copolymer, has been simultaneously strengthened and toughened by incorporating a hybrid natural filler (CNF@xyl). The CNF@xyl is formed by coating cellulose nanofibril (CNF) with small xylitol (xyl) particles using evaporation-induced self-assembly. In CNF@xyl, the xyl cladding around CNF can improve the dispersion of CNF in PPC by inhibiting the contact among CNF, and can enhance the interfacial interaction by providing high-density hydrogen bonds. Meanwhile, the CNF can minimize the size of xyl particles by being a substrate for xyl spreading. Consequently, by incorporating the hybrid fillers at small fraction, PPC/(CNF0.4@xyl2.0) exhibits a Young's modulus of 1318 ± 65 MPa, a tensile strength of 19.07 ± 0.98 MPa, and a toughness of 77.64 ± 3.21 MJ/m 3 , which is 161%, 145%, and 130% of that of neat PPC, respectively. More importantly, CNF, xyl, and PPC are fully biodegradable while CNF and xyl are renewable. This work offers a novel yet green method for optimizing the mechanical properties of biodegradable polymers and provides an alternative way to circumvent environmental issues.

Encoding Coacervate Droplets with Paramagnetism for Dynamical Reconfigurability and Spatial Addressability

Yangkun Huang,Jinpeng Huang,Wenxiang Yin,Fei Xie,Benjamin Coleman,Yaoyu Cao,Satoshi Aya,Wei Zhu,Zhijie Yang,Lingxiang Jiang

It is an ongoing endeavor in chemistry and materials science to regulate coacervate droplets on a physiologically relevant spatiotemporal scale to ultimately match or even surpass living cells’ precision, complexity, and functionality. Herein, we develop a magnetic strategy orthogonal to the thermal, pH, light, or chemical counterparts that are commonly employed by biotic or artificial systems; its successful implementation thus adds a missing piece to the current arsenal of manipulative methodologies. Specifically, we paramagnetize the otherwise diamagnetic coacervate droplets by cooperatively combining paramagnetic ingredients (including organic radicals, metal ions, and Fe3O4 nanoparticles) and coacervate ingredients to obtain “MagCoa” droplets. A simple model is derived theoretically to account for migration and division of MagCoa droplets in an uneven magnetic field. Experimentally, we produce an array of compartmentalized and monodispersed droplets using microfluidics and magnetically steer them with uniformity and synchronicity. We design and fabricate spatial magnetic modulators to engineer the landscape of a magnetic field that, in turn, directs the MagCoa droplets into predesigned patterns in a reconfigurable fashion. These programmable liquid patterns can be potentially extended to dynamic assembly and information encryption. We envision that the toolbox established here is of generality and multitudes to serve as a practical guide to control droplets magnetically.

Preparation and characterization of curcumin/chitosan conjugate as an efficient photodynamic antibacterial agent

Lingyu Zhao,Xiaowei Ding,Imran Mahmood Khan,Lin Yue,Yin Zhang,Zhouping Wang

Curcumin (Cur) is a natural pigment with excellent biological activity. The poor stability and insolubility of Cur in water severely limit its application. Therefore, to overcome these dilemmas which are big hindrances in their application, a novel derivative (COCS-Cur) was prepared by the esterification reaction of carboxylated chitosan (COCS) and Cur. The structure and properties of conjugate were determined through a series of characterizations. The derivatives had excellent solubility as well as stability. In addition, antioxidant and photodynamic antibacterial experiments proved that COCS-Cur had the excellent free radical scavenging ability and photodynamic antibacterial activity . The derivatives presented a better antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) than Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). Noteworthy, the COCS-Cur derivatives showed no obvious toxicity which makes them a stronger contender and potential antimicrobial agent or functional nutrient for application in the food industry.

Bioinspired Stabilization of Amorphous Calcium Carbonate by Carboxylated Nanocellulose Enables Mechanically Robust, Healable, and Sensing Biocomposites

Wanlin Wu,Zhixing Lu,Canhui Lu,Xunwen Sun,Bing Ni,Helmut Cölfen,Rui Xiong

Nature builds numerous structurally complex composites with fascinating mechanical robustness and functionalities by harnessing biopolymers and amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC). The key to successfully mimicking these natural designs is efficiently stabilizing ACC, but developing highly efficient, biodegradable, biocompatible, and sustainable stabilizing agents remains a grand challenge since anhydrous ACC is inherently unstable toward crystallization in the wet state. Inspired by the stabilized ACC in crustacean cuticles, we report the efficient stabilization ability of the most abundant biopolymer–cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) for ACC. Through the cooperative stabilizing effect of surface carboxyl groups and a rigid segregated network, the CNFs exhibit long-term stability (more than one month) and achieved a stabilization efficiency of 3.6 and 4.4 times that of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and alginate, respectively, even higher than poly(acrylic acid). The resulting CNF/ACC dispersions can be constructed into transparent composite films with the high strength of 286 MPa and toughness up to 28.5 MJ/m3, which surpass those of the so far reported synthetic biopolymer-calcium carbonate/phosphate composites. The dynamic interfacial interaction between nanocomponents also provides the composite films with good self-healing properties. Owing to their good wet stability, the composite films present high humidity sensitivity for monitoring respiration and finger contact.

Catalytic degradation of dyes on N-doped bioresource char and its radical and nonradical mechanism

Hongyu Liu,Xin Wen,Meng Hu,Huan Zhang,Junfu Wei

BACKGROUND Biochar has received much attention for disposal of aqueous organic contaminants because of its great potential in adsorption and catalysis. N-doped rice husk biochar (N-BC) was synthesized in this work and used to activate potassium peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to remove different types of dyes. The influence of preparation conditions of N-BC and reactive conditions on removal rate was discussed in detail. Free radical quenching experiment and electron spin resonance were used to analyze the active species and mechanism in the reaction. RESULTS N-BC with abundant graphitic-N, which is the main form of N to activate PMS, can be obtained by N-doping with carbamide at 900 °C. The removal rate for new coccine can reach nearly 100% in 30 min. Furthermore, the removal rate can still be maintained at 77.21% after reusing four times only washing with water, and it can be further promoted to 98.78% after annealing treatment at 900 °C. N-BC has excellent applicability to different types of dyes. CONCLUSION Consequently, the mechanism is the combination of radical (O 2 •− ) and nonradical ( 1 O 2 ) oxidation. First, the preparation method in this work is relatively simple. Second, the material can adapt to a very wide pH range. Third, the material shows high efficiency at room temperature (the removal rate can reach nearly 100% in 30 min). Fourth, the material shows high efficiency with only a small amount. This study provides a new path of rapid dye water purification using biochar, with simple synthesis, wide pH range adaptability, and high efficiency with only a small amount. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Mechanically strong nanopapers based on lignin containing cellulose micro- and nano-hybrid fibrils: Lignin content-fibrils morphology-strengthening mechanism

Jiran Dong,Jinsong Zeng,Pengfei Li,Jinpeng Li,Bin Wang,Jun Xu,Wenhua Gao,Kefu Chen

Lignin-containing cellulose nanopapers are emerging multifunctional materials in the fields of coatings, films, and packaging. However, the forming mechanism and properties of nanopapers with various lignin content have not been thoroughly studied. In this work, a mechanically strong nanopaper was fabricated based on lignin-containing cellulose micro- and nano-hybrid fibrils (LCNFs). The influence of lignin content and fibrils morphology on the formation process of nanopapers was investigated to understand the strengthening mechanism of nanopapers. LCNFs with high lignin content provided nanopapers with intertwined micro- and nano-hybrid fibrils layers with small layer spacing, while LCNFs with low lignin content offered nanopapers interlaced nanofibrils layers with large layer spacing. Although lignin was expected to interfere with hydrogen bonds between fibrils, the uniformly distributed lignin contributed to the stress transfer between fibrils. Due to the good coordination between microfibrils, nanofibrils and lignin (as network skeleton, filler and natural binder, respectively), the well-designed LCNFs nanopapers with lignin content of 14.5 % showed excellent mechanical properties, including tensile strength (183.8 MPa), Young's modulus (5.6 GPa) and elongation (9.2 %). This work deeply reveals the relationship between lignin content, morphology and strengthening mechanism of nanopapers, and providing theoretical guidance for employing LCNFs as structural and reinforcing materials to design robust composites.

Photocatalytic CO2 cycloaddition over highly efficient W18O49-based composites: An economic and ecofriendly choice

Ruolin Cheng,Anhu Wang,Shuxun Sang,Huagen Liang,Shiqi Liu,Panagiotis Tsiakaras

The CO 2 cycloaddition of epoxides is a highly attractive long-term carbon fixation strategy, but harsh reaction conditions and expensive catalytic materials limit its industrial application. Herein, low-cost and highly efficient W 18 O 49 -based composites were constructed by in-situ solvothermal synthesis. It is found that W 18 O 49 /g-C 3 N 4 composites exhibit the highest yield of 74% (271 mmol g −1 h −1 ) in the probing reaction of styrene carbonate production. The physicochemical characterizations indicate that the photocatalysis plays a fundamental role in this reaction by promoting the activation of CO 2 and styrene oxide. The crucial role of photogenerated electrons and Lewis acid-base sites is confirmed. In this work, a novel catalyst selection to produce cyclic carbonate under ambient conditions is presented.

All-Tunicate Cellulose Film with Good Light Management Properties for High-Efficiency Organic Solar Cells

Chen Jiang,Meiyan Wu,Fang Zhang,Chao Liu,Mingliang Sun,Bin Li

Tunicate nanocellulose with its unique properties, such as excellent mechanical strength, high crystallinity, and good biodegradability, has potential to be used for the preparation of light management film with tunable transmittance and haze. Herein, we prepared a whole tunicate cellulose film with tunable haze levels, by mixing tunicate microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) and tunicate cellulose nanofibrils (CNF). Then, the obtained whole tunicate cellulose film with updated light management was used to modify the organic solar cell (OSC) substrate, aiming to improve the light utilization efficiency of OSC. Results showed that the dosage of MFC based on the weight of CNF was an important factor to adjust the haze and light transmittance of the prepared cellulose film. When the dosage of MFC was 3 wt.%, the haze of the obtained film increased 74.2% compared to the pure CNF film (39.2%). Moreover, the optimized tunicate cellulose film exhibited excellent mechanical properties (e.g., tensile strength of 168 MPa, toughness of 5.7 MJ/m3) and high thermal stability, which will be beneficial to the workability and durability of OSC. More interestingly, we applied the obtained whole tunicate cellulose film with a high haze (68.3%) and high light transmittance (85.0%) as an additional layer to be adhered to the glass substrate of OSC, and a notable improvement (6.5%) of the power conversion efficiency was achieved. With the use of biodegradable tunicate cellulose, this work provides a simple strategy to enhance light management of the transparent substrate of OSC for improving power conversion efficiency. Keywords:cellulose composite films;cellulose nanofibrils;micro-fibrillated cellulose;tunicate;organic solar cells

A novel sol-gel strategy for constructing wood fibers and aramid nanofiber nanocomposite with strong, tough and recyclable properties

Tao Liu,Zheng Liu,Zhezhe Zhou,Sheldon Q. Shi,John Tosin Aladejana,Shanshan Gong,Zhen Fang,Jianzhang Li

Recently, biomass-based materials derived from wood processing residues have been developed to resolve the white pollution. However, the poor mechanical strength , weak water resistance, and non-recyclability still limit their practical applications. Aramid nanofiber (ANF) is a promising reinforcement due to the unique structural characteristics and exceptional mechanical properties . Here, a high-performance wood fibers-based nanocomposite was assembled based on chemically-modified wood fiber (CWF) and ANF via a sol-gel strategy with the solvent exchange. The dynamic noncovalent cross-linking with 3D reticular networks between CWF and ANF endow the as-prepared film with high tensile strength of 591.96 ± 11.05 MPa, high toughness of 38.68 ± 2.15 MJ/m 3 , and excellent solvent resistance . Moreover, the CWF-ANF gel can effectively repair the fractured CWF-ANF film under heating and maintain competitive mechanical properties after several dissolution-reconstruction, which shows the fascinating sustainability potential. Simultaneously, the as-prepared film is considered as a strong substrate to advance excellently conductive and anti-counterfeiting composite with double-layered structures. This effective strategy provides a novel pathway to reuse plant waste resources with competitive mechanical properties and high value-added utilization.
