High-Performance Ppb Level NO2 Gas Sensor Based on Colloidal SnO2 Quantum Wires/Ti3C2Tx MXene Composite

Baohui Zhang,Chong Li,Min Li,Chen Fu,Ran Tao,Honglang Li,Jingting Luo

Nitrogen dioxide is one origin of air pollution from fossil fuels with the potential to cause great harm to human health in low concentrations. Therefore, low-cost, low-power-consumption sensors for low-concentration NO2detection are essential. Herein, heterojunction by SnO2quantum wires, a traditional metal oxide NO2sensing material, and Ti3C2TxMXene, a novel type of 2D layered material, was synthesized using a simple solvothermal method for enhancing gas-sensing performance and reducing operating temperature. The operating temperature was reduced to 80 °C, with a best performance of 27.8 and a fast response and recovery time (11 s and 23 s, respectively). The SnO2and Ti3C2TxMXene composite exhibits high speed and low detection limit due to the construction of the heterojunction with high conductive Ti3C2TxMXene. The selectivity and stability of gas sensors are carried out. This could enable the realization of fast response, high-sensitivity, and selective NO2sensing under low operating temperatures.Keywords:Ti3C2TxMXene;SnO2;gas sensor;NO2;nanocomposite

Highly Flexible Ti3C2Tx MXene/Waterborne Polyurethane Membranes for High-Efficiency Terahertz Modulation with Low Insertion Loss

Tangdong Feng,Yiwen Hu,Xue Chang,Wanxia Huang,Daoyuan Wang,Hongfu Zhu,Tianyu An,Wenping Li,Kun Meng,Xueguang Lu,Basanta Roul,Sujit Das,Hua Deng,Kirill I. Zaytsev,Li-Guo Zhu,Qiwu Shi

The dynamic control of terahertz (THz) wave transmission on flexible functional materials is a fundamental building block for wearable electronics and sensors in the THz range. However, achieving high-efficiency THz modulation and low insertion loss is a great challenge while maintaining the excellent flexibility and stretchability of the materials. Herein, we report a Ti3C2Tx MXene/waterborne polyurethane (WPU) membrane prepared by a vacuum-assisted filtration method, which exhibits excellent THz modulation properties across stretching. The hydrophilic Ti3C2Tx MXene and WPU enable the uniform 3D distribution of Ti3C2Tx MXene in the WPU matrix. Particularly, the stretchability with the maximum strain of the membranes can reach 200%, accompanied by dynamic tuning of THz transmittance for more than 90% and an insertion loss as low as −4.87 dB. The giant THz modulation continuously decreases with MXene content per unit area, accompanied by a lower density of the MXene interface and diminished THz absorption during stretching. Such a design opens a pathway for achieving flexible THz modulators with a high modulation depth and low insertion loss, which would be used for THz flexible and wearable devices.

Construction of Co-decorated 3D nitrogen doped-carbon nanotube/Ti3C2Tx-MXene as efficient hydrogen evolution electrocatalyst

Liping Zhang,Xiangchuan Zhao,Zhaoyun Chu,Qing Wang,Yue Cao,Jiao Li,Wu Lei,Jun Cao,Weimeng Si

Rational design of transition metal catalysts with robust and durable electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) is extremely important for renewable energy conversion and storage, as well as water splitting. Heteroatom doping has emerged as a feasible strategy for enhancing electrocatalytic activity. Here, cobalt nanoparticles (Co-NPs) were coated with nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) prepared via an in situ growth on accordion-like Ti 3 C 2 T x -MXene (Co-NCNT/Ti 3 C 2 T x ). Such an intriguing structure showed great features: abundant anchoring sites for NCNT in situ growth, intimate integration of Co-NPs and NCNTs, high-speed electron transfer between 1D NCNTs and 2D Ti 3 C 2 T x -MXenes, and a large number of effective catalytic active sites. This Co-NCNT/Ti 3 C 2 T x hybrid catalyst was demonstrated to possess excellent HER performance with low overpotential ( η 10 , 190 mV), small Tafel slope (78.4 mV dec −1 ), large electrochemically active surface area, and good long-term stability, thus outperforming many reported electrocatalysts . The present strategy provided a facile route for the design of transition metal HER catalysts with NCNT and MXene .

Mechanically robust Ti3C2Tx MXene/Carbon fiber fabric/Thermoplastic polyurethane composite for efficient electromagnetic interference shielding applications

Ningmin Duan,Zhenyu Shi,Zhaohui Wang,Bin Zou,Chengpeng Zhang,Jilai Wang,Jianren Xi,Xiaoshuai Zhang,Xianzhi Zhang,Guilong Wang

It is a challenge to design Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene-based electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding composites with excellent mechanical properties. Herein, a highly robust, flexible and durable Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/carbon fiber fabric/thermoplastic polyurethanes (Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/CFf/TPU) composite was fabricated through simple electrohydrodynamic atomization deposition, layer-by-layer stacking and hot pressing technology. The synergistic strengthening effect of van der Waals forces and covalent bonds can improve the tensile strength of the composite up to170.2 MPa, which is far greater than that of other MXene-based composites previously reported. In addition, the EMI shielding performance of the Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/CFf/TPU composite also improved with increasing MXene mass fraction, reaching 40.4 dB, which can be attributed to the dielectric loss provided by conductive fillers and the enhanced absorption within the sandwich structure. More interestingly, the composite retained excellent resistance stability, EMI-SE stability and flexibility, even after multiple bending and releasing cycles. This work provides a facile and environmentally-friendly method for preparing composites with excellent EMI shielding properties and mechanical properties, which may provide more possibilities for applications in intelligent wear and electronic wireless communication equipment.

Ni-MOF/Ti3C2Tx derived multidimensional hierarchical Ni/TiO2/C nanocomposites with lightweight and efficient microwave absorption

Meng Wang,Panpan Zhou,Tong Feng,Zhi Song,Qingguo Ren,Huidong Gu,Xueqing Shi,Qitu Zhang,Lixi Wang

Benefiting from its large specific surface area, abundant defects and functional groups, two-dimensional (2D) laminated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene is a kind of electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorber with great potential. However, the impedance mismatch caused by the excessive conductivity, inappropriate permittivity and lack of magnetic loss seriously hinders the application of MXene to EMW absorption. Herein, multidimensional hierarchical Ni/TiO 2 /C nanocomposites composed of three-dimensional (3D) hydrangea-like Ni/C microspheres and well-arranged 2D carbon sheets embedded with TiO 2 nanoparticles were successfully fabricated from a Ni-based trimellitic acid framework (Ni-BTC) and Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene via facile in-situ solvothermal assembly and annealing processes. As expected, excellent EMW absorption properties were obtained only by changing the annealing temperature. The minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) value of -45.6 dB and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 3.40 GHz (14.6–18.0 GHz) with a layer thickness of only 1.5 mm is obtained by annealing the sample at 700 °C. The outstanding ternary multilayer structure and the optimization of magnetoelectric synergy in impedance matching jointly create its remarkable EMW absorption performance. This work is expected to provide a simple and effective method to design MXene-based EMW absorbing materials possessing high absorption intensity, light weight, wide EAB and thin thickness.

C60 intercalating Ti3C2Tx MXenes assisted by γ-cyclodextrin for electromagnetic interference shielding films with high stability

Kunpeng Qian,Shuang Li,Jianhui Fang,Yuhuan Yang,Shaomei Cao,Miao Miao,Xin Feng

Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes with excellent metallic conductivity and flexibility have shown a promising prospect as electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. Ultrathin, hierarchical hybrid films were fabricated by using C 60 intercalating Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes with the assistance of water-soluble γ -cyclodextrin (CD). The C 60 /CD complex was obtained by high-speed vibration milling using hydrophilic CD as dispersing agent. After thermal annealing treatment, the obtained hybrid film exhibited excellent EMI shielding (53.52±0.43 dB), hydrophobicity (water contact angle: 93.7°) and mechanical stability (over 0.9 million bending times). Taking advantage of the antioxidant of C 60 , the chemical durability of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes based hybrid films was also improved as expected. These results indicate that the well-designed hierarchical hybrid films with the intercalation of C 60 have promising potential for high-performance EMI shielding applications.

Bo Kong,Xiang Yang,Huiqian Dai,Yu Wu,Hong-Bing Lu,Wei Liu,Xiaoying Liu

In this work, an electrochemical sensor was developed based on the delaminated titanium carbide nanosheet (d-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) and fullerene (C 60 ) composite modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The composite materials d-Ti 3 C 2 T x /C 60 were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The prepared modified electrode (d-Ti 3 C 2 T x /C 60 /GCE) exhibited commendable electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of baicalein. Under the optimum detection conditions, the detection of baicalin showed a wide linear range of 0.015–4.0 μM with a detection limit of 0.005 μM. In addition, the d-Ti 3 C 2 T x /C 60 /GCE showed good reproducibility, stability and anti-interference. It was also successfully used for the determination of baicalin in the commercially available Shuanghuanglian oral liquid with satisfactory results.

Electrostatic Self-Assembly of Ti3C2Tx MXene/Cellulose Nanofiber Composite Films for Wearable Supercapacitor and Joule Heater

Guoqiang Zhou,Xiao Wang,Ting Wan,Chaozheng Liu,Weimin Chen,Shaohua Jiang,Jingquan Han,Youguo Yan,Meichun Li,Changtong Mei

The titanium carbide nanosheets (MXene) hold great potential for fabricating high-performance electronics due to their two-dimensional layered structure, high electrical conductivity, and versatile surface chemistry. However, assembling the small MXene nanosheets into flexible macroscopic films for wearable electronics still remains a challenge. Herein, we report the hierarchical assembling of MXene nanosheets and cellulose nanofibers into high-performance composite films via an electrostatic self-assembly strategy induced by polyethyleneimine. Benefited from the nacre-like microstructure of MXene “bricks” and cellulose nanofibers “mortars” interlocked by polyethyleneimine via hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction, composite films possess integrated superior flexibility, high tensile strength, and stable electrical conductivity, which are advantageous for wearable electronic applications. To provide a proof-of-concept design, a symmetric quasi-solid-state supercapacitor with the as-prepared composite film as electrode is fabricated, which exhibits a specific capacitance of 93.9 mF cm −2 at a current density of 0.1 mA cm −2 and almost constant capacitive behavior under different bending states. In addition, the composite film possesses capacities of electrothermal conversion and complete degradation in a hydrogen peroxide solution. These results demonstrate that the electrostatically self-assembled composite films hold great promise in the development of highly flexible, mechanically robust, and environmentally friendly energy storage and conversion devices.

Multifunctional nacre-mimetic Ti3C2Tx films with tunable conductivity and mechanical properties by controlling interlay supramolecular interactions

Zongxu Liu,Wenyan Wang,Jin Liu,Baolei Zhu,Guoxian Zhang,Jinxin Wang,Hepeng Zhang,Qiuyu Zhang

Nacre-mimetic strategy provides an enlightening approach to design high-performance bioinspired nanocomposites. Yet, it is still a big challenge to integrate excellent mechanical properties and tunable multifunctionality into artificial nacre materials. Herein, we develop a pioneering strategy to simultaneously modulate the electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of nacre-mimetic nanocomposite films by controlling interlay supramolecular interactions. A series of novel waterborne polyurethanes with 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinone (UPy) quadruple hydrogen bonding motifs in the side-chains were elaborately designed and synthesized, and further assembled with Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets to construct lamellar nacre-mimetic nanocomposite films with highly ordered nanostructure. This research revealed for the first time that merely varying the content of UPy groups on polyurethane realize significant modulation of mechanical properties, electrical conductivity, and even the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of nacre-mimetic nanocomposites. Strikingly, the tensile strength of the nanocomposites can be improved from 87.91 to 136.96 MPa and the electrical conductivity from 3214.0 to 4136.1 S cm −1 when the UPy content is increased from 0 to 15%. Additionally, the nacre-mimetic nanocomposite film is capable of fast responsive Joule heating performance at low trigger voltage. This work would open up a new avenue for fabricating multifunctional and mechanically robust biomimetic nanocomposites.

Reinforced anticorrosion performance of waterborne epoxy coating with eco-friendly L-cysteine modified Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets

Sihao Li,Haowei Huang,Fan Chen,Xiaoling He,Yanqi Ma,Li Zhang,Xinxin Sheng,Ying Chen,Elena Shchukina,Dmitry Shchukin

In this study, MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) nanosheets were modified by an amino acid (L-Cysteine) to fabricate functionalized MXene (fMX) hybrid material . Results derived from FTIR, XRD , EDS and XPS confirm that L-Cysteine has succeeded in covalently functionalizing MXene's surface. Later, fMX was introduced into the waterborne epoxy (WEP) coating as fillers, and its anti-corrosion performance was studied through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization tests. After being immersed in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 30 days, fMX/WEP still maintains a higher impedance modulus at lowest frequency (1.21 × 10 9  Ω·cm 2 ) and a lower corrosion rate (7.95 × 10 −6 mpy) compared to blank WEP. It is resulted from the well dispersion of fMX nanosheets in WEP matrix as well as the enhanced barrier properties offered by fMX. Our research provides a promising strategy for green modified MXene to improve the corrosion resistance of the coating.

Ultralight, Conductive Ti3C2Tx MXene/PEDOT:PSS Hybrid Aerogels for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Dominated by the Absorption Mechanism

Guo-Yu Yang,Shao-Zhe Wang,Hong-Tai Sun,Xu-Ming Yao,Chuan-Bing Li,Yu-Jun Li,Jian-Jun Jiang

MXene aerogels with a porous microstructure are a promising electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material due to its low density and excellent electrical conductivity, which has attracted widespread attention. Compared with traditional EMI shielding materials that rely on reflection as the primary mechanism, MXene aerogels with absorption as the dominant mechanism have greater potential for development as a novel EMI shielding material because of its ability to reduce environmental contamination from reflected electromagnetic (EM) waves from materials. In this study, a novel Ti3C2Tx MXene/PEDOT:PSS hybrid aerogel was presented by freeze-drying and thermal annealing using few-layered Ti3C2Tx MXene and the conductive polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). PEDOT:PSS not only improved the gelling ability of Ti3C2Tx but also successfully established a conductive bridge between MXene nanosheets. The experimental results demonstrated that the hybrid aerogel exhibited an obvious porous microstructure, which was beneficial for the multiple scattering of EM waves within the materials. The EMI shielding effectiveness and specific shielding effectiveness reached up to 59 dB and 10,841 dB·cm2·g–1, respectively, while the SER/SET ratio value was only 0.05, indicating superior wave absorption performance. Furthermore, the good impedance matching, due to the electrical conductance loss and polarization loss effect of the composites, plays a critical role in their excellent wave absorption and EMI shielding performance. Therefore, this work provides a practical approach for designing and fabricating lightweight absorption-dominated EMI shielding materials.

Electrostatic self-assembled NiFe2O4/Ti3C2Tx MXene nanocomposites for efficient electromagnetic wave absorption at ultralow loading level

Guo Yan,Wang Dedong,Bai Tiantian,Liu Hu,Zheng Yanjun,Liu Chuntai,Shen Changyu

Two-dimensional Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets with excellent electrical conductivity and layered structure have shown great promising in electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. Here, MXene nanosheets with homogeneously anchored NiFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles (NiFe 2 O 4 /MXene) were prepared using facial electrostatic self-assembling and freeze-drying technique. Interestingly, the minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of paraffin wax-based composites with only 3% NiFe 2 O 4 /MXene reached as low as − 41.83 dB, showing much stronger EMW absorption property than that of MXene nanosheets ( RL min  =  − 5.03 dB) at the same loading level. This can be mainly ascribed to the existence of NiFe 2 O 4 nanoparticle that can effectively prevent the self-stacking of MXene nanosheets, causing improved conduction loss. Besides, large amounts of heterogeneous interfaces between NiFe 2 O 4 nanoparticle and MXene can also produce additional interface polarization loss. More importantly, magnetic loss arising from the magnetic NiFe 2 O 4 nanoparticle is beneficial for good impedance matching, enabling more EMW to enter into the interior of composites to be dissipated. Furthermore, effective absorption bandwidth in the frequency range of 3.44–18 GHz can be achieved by adjusting the matching thickness of composites with 5% NiFe 2 O 4 /MXene. This study paves a way for preparing high-performance MXene-based EMW absorber at ultralow loading level. Graphical abstract Electrostatic self-assembled NiFe2O4/MXene nanocomposites exhibit excellent electromagnetic wave absorption performance based on the synergistic effect of bifillers
