A novel type of UV-curing silicone rubber was prepared via thiol-ene click reaction by using high-molecular-weight polydimethylsiloxane containing vinyl groups as the gum, polymercaptopropylmethylsiloxane as crosslinker, TS-530 SiO 2 as reinforcing filler and 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone as photoinitiator. The obtained UV-curing silicone rubbers were transparent. The thermomechanical properties of resulting silicone rubbers were studied using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Meanwhile, the mechanical property and thermal stability of the silicone rubber were also determined. Experimental results showed that the thiol-ene click reaction can be used as the alternative curing system to prepare the silicone rubber.

Bisphenol A-based epoxy acrylate (BABEA), a commercial ultraviolet (UV)-curable material, was introduced as a new manufacturing material for facile fabrication of epoxy-functionalized micro-zone plates through UV-initiated copolymerization using glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) as the functional monomer. The poly (BABEA- co -GMA) was highly transparent in visible range while highly opaque when the wavelength is less than 295 nm, and of high replication fidelity. X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS) results indicated the existence of epoxy groups on the surface of the poly (BABEA- co -GMA), which allowed for binding protein through an epoxy-amino group reaction. A fabrication procedure was proposed for manufacturing BABEA based epoxy-functionalized micro-zone plates. The fabrication procedure was very simple; obviating the need of micromachining equipments, wet etching or imprinting techniques. To evaluate the BABEA-based epoxy-functionalized micro-zone plates, α-fetoprotein (AFP) was immobilized onto the capture zone for chemiluminescent (CL) detection in a noncompetitive immune response format. The proposed AFP immunoaffinity micro-zone plate was demonstrated as a low cost, flexible, homogeneous, and stable assay for α-fetoprotein (AFP). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. In this study, UV-curable epoxy acrylate film was reinforced with benzyl triphenyl phosphorus chloride-intercalated vermiculite (BTPC-VMT). BTPC-VMT was prepared by intercalating benzyl triphenyl phosphorus chloride (BTPC) into vermiculite (VMT) and was used as reinforcing filler. Then, X-ray diffraction and Scanning electronic microscope results of hybrid films indicated that BTPC-VMT was well dispersed in the matrix. The hybrid films displayed enhanced tensile strength, impact strength, and pencil hardness without sacrificing elongation at break. Moreover, the thermal property of hybrid films was generally improved. The resulting hybrid films are promising for a number of applications, e.g. for metal and wood for their surface protection.

The decay of radon gas in soil and buildings produces alpha radiation, which is the second leading cause of lung cancer in humans. Therefore, by conveniently detecting radon gas in the environment, potential sources of danger can be identified early, and necessary measures can be taken to protect human health. Solid-state nuclear track detectors prepared from polyallyl diglycol carbonate (PADC) resin are the most sensitive detectors for alpha radiation released by radon gas. The traditional method of preparing PADC resin involves free radical thermal polymerization, which suffers from issues such as low polymerization efficiency, long processing time, and the occurrence of defects in the product. In this study, PADC resin was efficiently prepared using a UV initiator. Starting from the polymerization mechanism, experiments were designed using a controlled variable approach, and a rational polymerization apparatus was devised. By comparing the double bond conversion rate, transparency, hardness, and yellowness index of the polymers, the optimal initiator for PADC resin, 2-hydroxy-2-methyl-1-phenyl-1-propanone (1173), was selected. The influence of irradiation intensity, irradiation time, and UV initiator dosage was investigated. The performance of the polymers, including double bond conversion rate, optical properties, dynamic mechanical properties, etching rate, and track detection efficiency, was analyzed. The experimental conditions for preparing PADC resin were optimized: irradiation intensity of 12 mW/cm2, irradiation time of 25 min, and UV initiator dosage of 5 parts. The resulting resin polymer had a double bond conversion rate of 93.2% and a track detection efficiency of 0.714.

Ofloxacin (OFX), commonly employed in the treatment of infectious diseases, is frequently detected in aquatic environments and poses potential ecological risks. UV/H 2 O 2 oxidation has been recognized as an efficient approach for removing antibiotics. In this study, Cu-doped waste-tire carbon was prepared and used as a UV/H 2 O 2 catalyst for the degradation of OFX. The results showed that the OFX removal was 89.3% within 90 min under the optimal reaction conditions. It was found that ZnO, used in the tire manufacturing to promote rubber vulcanization for enhanced stability and durability, played an important role in UV/H₂O₂ oxidation for OFX degradation. Toxicity experiments conducted with a microbial degradation respirometer demonstrated that the treated water exhibited low toxicity. This study introduces a sustainable catalyst derived from waste tires, and facilitating the development of metal-carbon catalysts for the effective removal of antibiotics from wastewater.

Prometryn is one of the commonly used triazine herbicides and is also widely used for algae removal in aquaculture. This study investigated the degradation kinetics of prometryn via UV/persulfate (PS) oxidation and confirmed its adherence to pseudo-first-order kinetics, with a calculated rate constant (k obs ) of 0.2358 min −1 . The impact of PS concentration, water matrix (including background ions of Cl − and Br − and natural organic matter (NOM)), and solution pH on prometryn degradation were assessed. Results indicated an increase in prometryn degradation with raising concentrations of PS, Cl − , and Br − , especially evident at a PS concentration of 400 μm where complete degradation was achieved. Conversely, degradation decreased with increasing NOM concentration and pH. Radical scavenging experiments affirmed the promotion of prometryn degradation in UV/PS by both HO• and SO 4 − •, with SO 4 − • contributing over 70 % of the total free radical contribution. Evaluation of disinfection by-product (DBP) formation revealed trichloromethane (TCM) as the predominant DBP in non‑bromine water and tribromomethane (TBM) in bromine water. Thus, this study offers a theoretical foundation for UV/PS degradation of triazine herbicides in aqueous environments. The obtained results hold significance for controlling DBPs in subsequent water treatment processes, ensuring the provision of safe drinking water to the public and meeting the sustainable development goal 6.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a promising biodegradable and biocompatible polymer material. However, the large number of hydrogen bonds in PVA leads to a contradiction between strengthening and plasticization, which limits its widespread application. To address this challenge, the most abundant aromatic biopolymer, lignin, was adopted as a biobased reinforcing agent for PVA. The simultaneous reinforcement and toughening of PVA by lignin were achieved through the construction of interfacial coordination bonds and hydrogen bonds. The tensile strength and Young's modulus of coordination-reinforced lignin/vanillin-modified PVA (VPVA) composites reached 101 MPa and 1694 MPa, respectively. The thermal processing window of the composites increased from 25.5 °C to 100.5 °C, which provided a potential in thermal processing. Besides, dense hydrogen bonds and coordination bonds conferred good self-healing and water recovery properties onto the composites. Interestingly, the incorporation of lignin also endowed the composites with good photothermal conversion capabilities, making the composites suitable for indoor thermal management. Under simulated solar irradiation of 200 mW/cm 2 , the composites could reduce the indoor temperature rise by 8 °C. This work presents a novel approach for effectively enhancing the comprehensive performance of lignin/PVA composites by coordination bonds, and also presents a pioneering investigation for the high-value utilization of lignin.

2 The bioplastic film polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) /chitosan (CS), i.e., PC, formed by blending PVA with CS, exhibits excellent antioxidant properties and biodegradability. However, it lacks ultraviolet (UV) blocking ability, limiting its capacity to protect adipose-rich foods from photo-oxidation. Lignin possesses remarkable UV shielding ability that inhibits food photo-oxidation and extends shelf-life. However, the dark brown color of lignin negatively impacts the film color and transparency. To address these restrictions, this study incorporated acetylated lignin (ALG) loaded with halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) into conventional PC films (PC-HALG), resulting in a significant reduction in the color intensity of the film by almost 255.3 %, i.e., almost being colorless. The UV-A and UV-B shielding capacities of the PC films were increased by 1347 % and 617 %, respectively. Thus, ALG provided the PC films with excellent UV shielding capacity while reducing their color intensity and maintaining high transparency. Additionally, the loading of HNTS reduced lignin agglomeration, contributing to the improvement in transparency and enhancement of UV shielding effects in PC films. Furthermore, the PC-HALG film retained and even enhanced the biodegradability of the PC film, which exhibited degradability within one week. Freshness preservation experiments confirmed that the oxidation of pecan oil covered with the PC-HALG film under UV irradiation was reduced by 81.3 %–92.2 %. These findings suggest that this bioplastic film can be used in visually displaying food products while preventing their photo-oxidation. Mechanical properties, thermal stability, barrier properties, and antioxidant properties of the developed PC-HALG film were also characterized.

Aramid fibers (AFs) are widely applied as structural material, cordage, and versatile protection in many harsh environments, including space and deep sea. However, intense ultraviolet (UV)/ irradiation, high/low temperatures, and/or chemical solvent with strong acid/alkali/corrosion feature seriously affect their mechanical properties, thus severely shorten the life cycle of AF-based products. Inspiration by the principle of multiple refractions and partly reflections, an innovative strategy by depositing of laminated Al 2 O 3 /TiO 2 composite onto the surface of poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) via atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique was presented. The tenacity of ALD-coated PMIA only decreases by ∼ 8 %, and the yellowness index (YI) only increasing to 129.24 %, far lower than 321.63 % of pristine PMIA fabric under the combination of intense UV irradiation (4260 W/m 2 ) and high temperature (200 °C + ) for 6 h, which equals to continuous strong sunlight exposure for approximately 7.5 years. Meanwhile, ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) value increased to 126.4, which is double that of the pristine PMIA fabric, exhibiting an impressive UV-resistance property. Furthermore, the ALD-coated PMIAs also shows a significant enhancement in both chemical and thermal stabilities. In all, this work not only forge a new route for the functionalization of fibrous materials, but also exhibits great promise for next generation advanced composite material and cutting-edge equipment in harsh environment.

Polyacrylate was widely used in textiles, leather, and functional coatings due to its excellent film formation and flexibility. However, its durability was compromised by mechanical damage and poor water resistance. This study aimed to design a UV-induced self-healing polyacrylate coating (PXD) using vinyl-modified coumarin and acrylate monomers based on photoreversible covalent and hydrophobic interactions. The effect of the coumarin structure on the mechanical and self-healing properties was systematically examined. Results showed that increasing polymer chain flexibility, extending the distance between coumarin structures and the main chain, and raising the healing temperature enhanced self-healing efficiency. The PXD samples achieved over 84% healing efficiency after 8 h of 365 nm UV irradiation at 60°C, with scratches approximately 15 μm wide nearly fully healed within 2 h. Molecular dynamics simulations confirmed the influence of monomer structure on polymer flexibility, and the PXD self-healing mechanism was clarified. PXD-5 also exhibited improved hydrophobicity and water resistance, particularly under UV light, significantly enhancing leather durability. This development of UV-induced self-healing polyacrylate coatings represents a significant advancement in functional coating materials.

The shrinkage phenomenon of UV-NIL resists during photocuring is still regarded as an important problem hindering the wide application of UV-NIL technology. Herein, we designed four degradable UV-NIL resists with low volume shrinkage rate based on acrylic anhydride. Acrylate provided quick UV curing ability, and the resists were completely cured under a 365 nm UV light for 10 seconds. The anhydride group provided a degradation ability, causing the cured resists to be completely dissolved in an alkaline developer. Introducing rings in the molecular structure could compensate for volume shrinkage by ring-opening, and the volume shrinkage rate of the resists was below 4%. The cured resists showed good thermal stability with a decomposition temperature higher than 150 °C. The UV-NIL resists demonstrated good pattern replication ability, and distinct patterns with 100 nm resolution were obtained. The prepared UV-NIL resists are expected to play a role in the manufacturing of semiconductors, solar cells, displays, sensors, and other devices in the future.

Chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) are hazardous to the environment and human health. Although the catalysis technology can effectively degrade CVOCs, there are problems of catalyst poisoning and harmful byproducts. In this study, the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) coupled wet ultraviolet (UV) system (DBD + UV/H 2 O) without catalysts was proposed for the removal of a typical CVOC chlorobenzene (CB). The CB removal rate of the DBD + UV/H 2 O system was as high as 91.8 %, and the CB mineralization rate reached 76.1 %. Furthermore, the CB removal performance of the DBD + UV/H 2 O system was stable and the CB removal rate was approximately 91 % even after 15 h of reaction. In the UV/H 2 O reactor, O 3 generated by DBD was converted to ∙OH and ∙O 2 - , which played a key role in deep CB oxidation. Based on organic intermediates and density functional theory calculations (DFT), CB was degraded mainly through the hydrodechlorination pathway in the DBD reactor, while undegraded CB and organic intermediates were deeply oxidized by UV, ∙OH, and ∙O 2 - in the UV/H 2 O reactor. This study demonstrated that DBD + UV/H 2 O system can efficiently, and deeply remove CVOCs under catalyst-free conditions.
