Solar photocatalysis has long relied on the rational design of semiconductor photocatalysts. Herein, a ternary meso-TiO2@ZnIn2S4/Ti3C2 MXene photocatalyst is prepared and demonstrated with a core–shell structure accompanied by few-layered Ti3C2 Mxene on the ZnIn2S4 shell. The success of the synthesis depends on a two-step method consisting of hydrothermal and electrostatic self-assembly procedures. The ternary heterojunction exhibits a good behavior for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. A mechanism study of the photocatalytic reaction indicates that the photogenerated charges transfer in a Z-scheme pathway. Moreover, the construction of the Schottky junction between metallic Ti3C2 and TiO2@ZnIn2S4 is extremely effective for the reduction reaction. Consequently, the photocatalytic rates toward CO and CH4 production are up to 30.5 and 34.0 μmol/g within 3 h of illumination by simulated sunlight, respectively, while the CH4 selectivity reaches 52.7%. This work provides a good strategy to achieve highly efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Enhance the concentration of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) to ameliorate the photocatalytic performance is a promising strategy. Therefore, Z-scheme Mo 2 S 3 /BiOCl heterostructure with rational oxygen vacancies (OVs) was successfully synthesized by in-situ template method to tackle these issues. Characterization results reveal that the OVs were efficiently passivated by forming Mo–O bond at the interface of Mo 2 S 3 and BiOCl. Moreover, the photocatalytic mechanism research reflects that the interfacial electric field not only enhance the spatial separation and migration efficiency of the photo-induced carriers but also benefit producing abundant 1 O 2 , and thus TC-HCl was purified 90.8% in 90 min. Meanwhile, the contribution of the reactive oxygen species to the photocatalytic activity and the formation path of 1 O 2 were comprehensively studied for the first time. This work provides a new avenue to study the formation path of 1 O 2 and offer a polishing strategy to mend the photocatalytic activity by modulate the concentration of 1 O 2 .

A ternary biochar/vanadium pentoxide/graphite like carbon nitride (BC/V2O5/g-C3N4 denoted BC/VO/CN) composite was prepared by a simple hydrothermal method and its photocatalytic performance was investigated under simulated solar irradiation. The BC/VO/CN was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Within the BC/VO/CN composites VO nanoparticles were highly crystalline and intertwined with the lamellas of CN, resulting in the formation of well-defined Z-type heterostructures. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated using Rhodamine B as a model pollutant. Under simulated solar (230–780 nm) irradiation the as-prepared BC/VO/CN hybrid materials demonstrated highly improved photocatalytic activity compared to CN, VO and VO/CN. The cause of the solar enhancement could be ascribed to the formation of Z-type heterojunctions between VO and CN, which promoted faster electron–hole separation and more efficient charge transfer. BC, as an electron transfer medium, accelerated the transfer of photogenerated charge carriers and inhibited their recombination.

Constructing Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst with strong redox ability to make for enhanced photocatalytic performance and efficient charge separation is extremely attractive but still underdeveloped. Herein, a Z-scheme heterojunction structured La(OH) 3 @In 2 S 3 composite (labeled by “LIS”) with photocatalytic for the methylene orange (MO) degradation under simulated light irradiation has been developed. The as-prepared LIS, together with commercial La(OH) 3 and pure In 2 S 3 fabricated with the identical processing method and starting materials as those of LIS, was characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectra and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results show the heterojunction of La(OH) 3 /In 2 S 3 has prolonged the lifetime of the photo-generated carriers. The photocatalytic activity test shows that over only a small amount (0.02 g in 100 ml MO) of LIS, the photodegradation rate of 95% toward MO can be obtained in 90 min, which is about 3.4 times higher than that over pure In 2 S 3 . The active species trapping experiments indicate that there were four active species playing roles in photodegradation as the following order: e – = ∙OH < h + < ∙O 2 – . A mechanism of Z-scheme heterojunction was proposed and well explained the enhanced photocatalytic performance. This work provides a new cost-effective photocatalyst with high photocatalytic properties.

A Z-scheme MoS2/CuO photocatalyst is successfully developed using a hydrothermal and calcination method, which has excellent activity (96%) in the degradation of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) under visible light irradiation. The reaction rate constants of MBT degradation on the MoS2/CuO heterojunction are 8 and 6 times higher than those of pure MoS2 and the original CuO, respectively. The as-prepared photocatalyst was characterized using XRD, SEM, XPS and electrochemistry measurement. From the experimental results, the significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity is mainly ascribed to the formation of a Z-scheme heterostructure between MoS2 nanosheets and flower spherical CuO, effectively improving the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. What is remarkable is that the Z-scheme electron transfer process leads to a large accumulation of photogenerated electrons and holes, improving the oxidation and reduction properties of CuO and MoS2. Moreover, an intensive study of the mechanism has proved that holes, superoxide radicals and hydroxyl radicals are all active substances in the degradation process. This study opens up a new way to devise novel and highly efficient MoS2-based photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants.

With high redox ability of electrons and holes, Z-scheme heterojunction is a promising composite structure in the photocatalysis. However, it is challenging to inhibit the recombination of carriers by Z-scheme transfer. Herein, a novel Ag 3 PO 4 /AgBr/Ti 3 C 2 Tx hybrid with dual channel carrier transfer structure was fabricated. Ti 3 C 2 Tx not only serves as a template for growth of Z-scheme Ag 3 PO 4 /AgBr, but also can be used to accommodate holes transferred from Ag 3 PO 4 and AgBr. The first channel is consisted of Z-scheme transfer of carriers in Ag 3 PO 4 /AgBr. And the hole transfer from the AgBr valence band to Ti 3 C 2 Tx constitutes the second channel, which avoids directly carrier recombination in AgBr valence band. Dual channel carrier transfer pathway was proved by in situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ISI-XPS). After Ti 3 C 2 Tx was introduced, the quantum efficiency of Ag 3 PO 4 /AgBr increased from 10.59% to 12.50% with reducing Cr(VI), indicating an increase in carrier utilization. The improvement of the degradation efficiency of rhodamine B from 80.77% to 94.72% is benefited from the enhanced quantum efficiency. The dual channel carrier transfer heterojunctions design provides a new idea for constructing an efficient composite photocatalytic structure.

In this work, a series of Z-scheme Ag/Ag 2 WO 4 /g-C 3 N 4 (AAC) photocatalysts were successfully constructed by the deposition–precipitation method at room temperature. The phase, structure, morphology and optical property of the as-prepared photocatalysts were well characterized. Interestingly, all AAC exhibited prominent photocatalytic activity for Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation under visible light illumination. Especially, AAC-3 possessed the higher RhB degradation rate ( k = 0.1855 min −1 ). More remarkably, when H 2 O 2 (1 mL 0.0977 mol/L) was dissolved into reaction system, the degradation rate of RhB was further improved ( k = 0.7899 min −1 ), which could be mainly attributed to the high separation rate of photogenic carriers and more active species. Meanwhile, a feasible photocatalytic reaction mechanism was proposed and discussed in detail.

In this study, a simple hydrothermal method was used to prepare a Z-scheme CdS/Fe 3 O 4 /TiO 2 nanocomposite photocatalyst for the degradation of ibuprofen under visible light. The fabricated photocatalyst has been comprehensively characterized. It has a uniformly distributed spherical shape, excellent long-wavelength light absorption ability, rapid electron separation and Z-scheme electron transfer. Fe 3 O 4 in the photocatalyst promotes light absorption and the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction as an electron mediator. Under the optimal atomic ratio, 94.2% of ibuprofen can be decomposed after visible light irradiation for 180 min in the presence of CdS/Fe 3 O 4 /TiO 2 nanocomposite photocatalyst. The dominant reactive species accounting for ibuprofen degradation are holes (h + ) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH). After reaction, the photocatalyst can be easily recollected through magnetic separation. Although the photocatalytic efficiency of reused CdS/Fe 3 O 4 /TiO 2 nanocomposite photocatalyst decreased, it kept stable good performance (around 75%) after reused for more than 3 cycles. Overall, this study provides an easy method to synthesize a novel magnetic photocatalyst for the photocatalytic degradation of emerging contaminates under visible light.

In this work, Bi spheres were deposited on bulk WO 3 ·0.33H 2 O and TiO 2 (P25) nanoparticles to form Z-scheme Bi/TiO 2 /WO 3 ·0.33H 2 O heterojunction material for the first time by a simple hydrothermal method. The as-prepared materials were comprehensively characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, UV–Vis DRS, BET surface area, EIS, and Mott-Schottky analysis. The ternary Bi/TiO 2 /WO 3 ·0.33H 2 O composites exhibited superior degradation efficiency for RhB than pure WO 3 ·0.33H 2 O, TiO 2 (P25), and their binary composites. The degradation rate reached 99.84% after 30 min under simulated sunlight. The enhancement of photocatalytic activity could be attributed to the Z-scheme heterojunction system with metal Bi as an electronic medium, which greatly enhanced the efficiency of charge separation. This report demonstrated that Z-scheme Bi/TiO 2 /WO 3 ·0.33H 2 O heterojunction photocatalytic material has potential application value in dye wastewater treatment.

A dual Z-scheme fe 2 O 3 @MnO 2 core/shell nanocube supported C 3 N 4 ternary composite is rationally designed and successfully fabricated as a photocatalyst for water splitting. The as-prepared Fe 2 O 3 @MnO 2 /C 3 N 4 ternary composite exhibits an enhanced visible light-induced absorbance capacity and superior photocatalytic activity for direct water splitting than that of pure g-C 3 N 4 . The photocatalytic efficiency is investigated by varying amounts of Fe 2 O 3 @MnO 2 core/shell nanocubes in the ternary composite (10%wt, 20%wt and 30%wt). When the mass fraction of Fe 2 O 3 @MnO 2 is determined to be 20%, the hydrogen evolution rate would achieve the maximum with a value of 124 μmol*h −1 . The improved photocatalytic performance of Fe 2 O 3 @MnO 2 /C 3 N 4 ternary composite can be mainly attributed to improved visible light absorption range and construction of an effective dual Z-scheme interfacial heterojunction with a rapid separation and transfer of electron-hole pairs.

The fabrication of a Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst can effectively modulate the electron transfer and separation of photoinduced charge carriers to enhance photocatalytic performance. Here, we demonstrate a direct Z-scheme BiOCl–phosphotungstic acid (BiOCl–HPW) heterojunction, fabricated via a one-step hydrothermal synthesis, as a highly active and stable photocatalyst for the photodegradation of tetracycline. BiOCl–HPWs result in a dramatic improvement in visible-light utilization and photogenerated e− and h+ separation, as well as a decrease in the electrical resistance by the addition of HPW. Notably, the BiOCl–HPW heterojunction with optimized phosphotungstic acid (HPW) content achieved an outstanding photodegradation rate of tetracycline (0.0195 min−1). A reasonable Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism based on the analysis of band structure and monitoring of active radicals is proposed. This study highlights the potential implications of the BiOCl–HPW heterojunctions in the photodegradation of other toxic chemicals and photocatalytic studies.

The rational fabrication of direct Z-scheme heterostructures photocatalysts is a pivotal strategy to boost the interfacial charge migration and separation. Herein, direct Z-scheme Bi2WO6/WO3composites were rationally fabricated for the degradation of bisphenol A combined with the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The tight interface contact between Bi2WO6and WO3was successfully formed by the in situ epitaxial growth of ultrathin Bi2WO6nanosheets at the surface of WO3nanorods. The Bi2WO6/WO3composite presented highly efficient catalytic performance toward degradation of BPA with PMS activation as compared to the WO3and Bi2WO6. PMS can dramatically boost the photocatalytic activity of the composites. Moreover, the results of active radical scavenging experiments revealed thath+, •O2−, and •SO4−are critical active species in the photodegradation reaction. Finally, the photocatalytic mechanism for the degradation of BPA is also discussed in detail. The great improvement of photocatalytic performance should be ascribed to the effective formation of the direct Z-scheme heterojunctions between Bi2WO6and WO3, resulting in improved light absorption, an efficient transfer and separation of photoinduced charge carriers, and a considerable amount of the electrons and holes with strong reduction and oxidation abilities. The study might provide new inspirations to design and construct heterostructured nanomaterials with outstanding photoactivity for environmental remediation. Keywords:bisphenol A;peroxymonosulfate;photocatalysis;composites;Z-scheme
