Smart manufacturing of ZIF-8 photonic crystals: Catalytic formaldehyde degradation and colorful eco-friendly coatings

Da Teng,Wenxiang Zheng,Lei Wu,Ghulam Murtaza,Zihui Meng,Lili Qiu

Formaldehyde and other harmful gases cause environmental pollution and threaten human health. Environment-friendly coatings is an effective strategy to address these environmental and health concerns. In this study, a large-scale amorphous photonic crystals (APC) based on modified ZIF-8 (H xh -ZIF-8) with photocatalytic degradation of formaldehyde and tunable structural color were designed for eco-friendly coatings by programmable smart manufacturing. As APC unit, H xh -ZIF-8 nanoparticles with controllable diameters were synthesized utilizing solvothermal method and the −N = C = O group was introduced with thermal oxidation. The results of photocatalytic degradation revealed that H 5h -ZIF-8, through thermal oxidation, exhibited a formaldehyde degradation rate 9.8 times than that of ZIF-8. The main reactive components in photocatalysis were holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals ( · O 2 – ), showcasing both stability and reproducibility. The color and brightness of the APC were adjusted by tuning the H xh -ZIF-8 diameter. The angle-independent APC ranging from red to purple were fabricated with 177, 165 and 235 nm H xh -ZIF-8 nanoparticles in various proportions with programmable smart manufacturing. In this study, a large-scale ZIF-8-based APC was designed with programmable smart manufacturing for environment-friendly coating, which combined environmental protection technology with structural color, and paved a new strategy for the development of multifunctional materials in air quality management.

Residual ZnNx moieties in ZIF-8 derived catalysts: Protective and synergistic effects for oxygen reduction

Yun-Fei Xia,Bo Liu,Pan Guo,Feng-Di Tu,Li-Xiao Shen,Miao Ma,Yun-Kun Dai,Jing Liu,Bin Xu,Yun-Long Zhang,Lei Zhao,Yan Wang,Zhen-Bo Wang

ZIF-8 derived carbons demonstrate admirable application prospects in electrocatalytic fields, while ZnN x remaining in those materials are overlooked, crippling the validity of theoretic studies in researches. Herein, the residual Zn in ZIF-8 derived carbons are found could exceed 10 wt% even at carbonization temperatures over 900℃, and Zn-NCs with various Zn contents are adopted as supports to synthesize low-platinum ORR catalysts. Substantial characterizations manifest that ZnN x in Zn-NC can not only provide Zn source for L1 0 -PtZn intermetallic, but act as ‘spatial barriers’ to prevent the formation of inactive PtN x , elevating the active Pt proportion in catalyst by ∼104%. The resultant Zn-NC-Ar-PtZn exhibits a mass activity of 0.557 mA/g Pt and a peak density of 1.485 W/cm 2 . DFT calculations show the strong thermodynamic tendency of forming PtN 4 without the protection of ZnN 4 , and the superior durability and activity of Zn-NC-Ar-PtZn should be attributed to its Zn-derived ligand effects and the SMSI.

Size-controlled synthesis of ZIF-8 nanoparticles by high gravity technology for enhanced tetracycline adsorption

Xin-Ran Shi,Yan Wei,Miao Chang,Hua Zou,Jie-Xin Wang

ZIF-8 as a typical metal–organic framework (MOF) is regarded as a promising adsorbent owing to its ultra-high specific surface area and well-defined porous architecture. Smaller-sized MOFs with more exposed active sites are conducive to the rapid and efficient adsorption of molecules. However, achieving precise nanoscale control of MOF particle sizes remains a challenge. Herein, we report a facile method to prepare uniform ZIF-8 nanoparticles with controllable sizes of 20–120 nm by high gravity technology in the rotating packed bed (RPB) reactor. Compared with the conventional stirred tank reactor (STR), the products prepared by RPB showed narrower size distribution and smaller particle size, with an average reduction of 30 %. The as-synthesized ZIF-8 nanoparticles demonstrated a pronounced size-dependent adsorption behavior for tetracycline in aqueous solutions. Particularly, 20 nm ZIF-8 nanoparticles exhibited the highest adsorption capacity of about 217 mg g −1 , surpassing both micro-sized ZIF-8 (189 mg g −1 ) and previously reported ZIF-8 and its composites. Moreover, the effects of adsorbent dosage, pH, temperature and coexisting ions on the adsorption performance were also investigated. A rational adsorption mechanism of TC adsorption over ZIF-8 nanoparticles was proposed. These findings are of great significance for selecting nano-absorbents with the appropriate size to achieve optimal adsorption in real-world use.

A dual-emission CdTe@ZIF-8/CDs@MIPs nanocomposite for visual and ratiometric lysozyme sensing

Xiqing Liu,Tao Wang,Yongqing Wang

Fluorescence technology enabled highly sensitive, real-time and multi-scenario detection of lysozyme (Lys). However, fluorescent nanomaterials suffer from aggregation-induced quenching, environmental interference and lack of selective recognition capability. In this work, the ZIF-8 was used as a framework to support red and blue fluorescence quantum dots for constructing ratiometric fluorescence sensor. At the same time, combined with molecular imprinting technology, a Molecular Imprinting Polymers (MIPs)-based ratiometric fluorescence sensor was designed for improving the sensitive and selective. The MIPs-based ratiometric fluorescence sensor exhibited highly sensitively and selectively for the detection of lysozyme. Benefited from ratiometric design, the sensor could realize the effect of visual detection of Lys and the limit of detection (LOD) was reached 0.048 mg/L. The HPLC method was used to further confirm the sensor has the potential for practical application. Furthermore, to the demand of an affordable and portable strategy for visual detection Lys, a dexterous and inexpensive test paper was made in this work.

Emodin regulates nucleation and crystal growth of ZIF-8 for developing the size-dependent nanotherapeutics

Taotao Huo,Xiaoyu Shan,Ziyi Wang,Jiaqi Song,Liang Shao,Yuquan Bai,Xianyi Yu,Qingyuan Yang,Guangying Li,Rongqin Huang

The particle size of ZIF-8 significantly influences its benefits in drug delivery and release, thereby determining therapeutic efficacy. Here, we investigate the correlations between drugs and ZIF-8 crystallization and discover that emodin can function as a binding template for zinc ions to accelerate nucleation processes via reducing the Gibbs free energy, while also serving as a capping agent on the {100} facets to regulate crystal growth. These dual roles, based on hydroxyl-substituted anthraquinone structure of emodin, can govern ZIF-8 crystallization, enabling the precise control over both size and morphology of emodin-loaded ZIF-8 (E@Z). Consequently, by regulating the feed ratio of emodin, E@Z ranging in size from 900 nm to 80 nm are successfully prepared. The therapeutic outcomes demonstrate that, in addition to enhancing the antibacterial effect of emodin, size-dependent degradation properties of E@Z enable a controlled release of emodin within tumor, ultimately amplifying its anti-tumor efficacy. Additionally, other natural anthraquinones compounds with structures similar to emodin also possess this ability to regulate ZIF-8 size. Our study provides a fundamental framework for the advancement of anthraquinone drugs and their potential applications in the field of ZIF-8-based size-dependent nanotherapeutics.

ZIF-8-Based Composites for Enhanced Biofilm Penetration and Synergistic Antibacterial Therapy against Periodontal Pathogens

Yuanshu Weng,Jiannan Li,Dongna Xie,Song Peng,Ying Wen,Jiale Wan,Dong Ma,Guowei Li,Wu Zhang

Periodontitis is initiated by bacterial biofilms, and the removal of plaque is critical in preventing the onset and progression of periodontal diseases, including gingival inflammation, periodontitis, and even alveolar bone resorption. Clinically, mechanical methods are commonly used to remove plaque and calculus. However, conventional methods struggle to access certain regions, such as deep periodontal pockets, root furcations, and dentinal tubules. In these cases, antimicrobial agents are required to eradicate residual pathogenic microorganisms. This study designed a dextran-coated ZIF-8-based composite material (Ce6@ZIF-8/Dex) to enhance biofilm penetration and photodynamic antibacterial efficacy against periodontal pathogens. The photosensitizer, chlorin e6 (Ce6), synergizes with zinc ions (Zn2+) from the zeolitic imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF-8) to achieve a combined antibacterial effect and reduce bacterial resistance to single antimicrobial agents. Dextran modification further improves the biofilm penetration capability of the ZIF-8 composite, enhancing its overall antibacterial efficiency. In vivo, Ce6@ZIF-8/Dex demonstrated excellent biocompatibility and antibacterial activity against Porphyromonas gingivalis and Streptococcus mutans. This study presents a promising antibacterial strategy for the prevention and treatment of periodontitis.

Triphase Enzyme Electrode Based on ZIF-8 with Enhanced Oxidase Catalytic Kinetics and Bioassay Performance

Yimeng Sun,Yifan Zhou,Liping Chen,Dandan Wang,Haiyan Liu,Weihai Ni,Xinjian Feng

Oxidase enzyme-based electrochemical bioassays have garnered considerable interest due to their specificity and high efficiency. However, in traditional solid–liquid diphase enzyme electrode systems, the low solubility of oxygen and its slow mass transfer rate limit the oxidase catalytic reaction kinetics, thereby affecting the bioassay performance, including the detection accuracy, sensitivity, and linear dynamic range. ZIF-8 nanoparticles (NPs) possess hydrophobic and high-porosity characteristics, enabling them to serve as oxygen nanocarriers. In this work, we constructed a solid–liquid–air triphase enzyme electrode by encapsulating ZIF-8 NPs within an oxidase network. Hydrophobic ZIF-8 NPs can provide a rapid and sufficient supply of oxygen for the oxidase-catalyzed reactions, which enhances and stabilizes the kinetics of oxidase-catalyzed reactions. This approach eliminates the issue of “oxygen deficiency” at the traditional solid–liquid diphase interface. Consequently, the triphase enzyme electrode exhibits a 12-fold higher linear detection range than the diphase system and possesses good detection accuracy in electrolytes even with fluctuating oxygen levels. This work proposes a novel approach to construct triphase reaction systems for addressing the gas deficiency problem in heterogeneous catalysis.

ZIF-8 membranes for efficient C3H6 recovery from the Hydrogen Peroxide to propylene oxide process

Changhai Fan,Zhengwang Xia,Haiqian Lian,Luogang Wu,Eryue Song,Jingxian Hua,Li Shen,Rujing Hou,Yichang Pan,Weihong Xing

The ZIF-8 membrane has emerged as a promising candidate for C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation. However, the feasibility of ZIF-8 membranes for applications has rarely been investigated with gas provided directly by the industry sector. Herein, the C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 mixture collected from the backend of the Hydrogen Peroxide to Propylene Oxide (HPPO) process was applied as feed gas to examine the separation performance of tubular ZIF-8 membranes. The membranes exhibited excellent separation performance and long-term stability under 9 bar and 50 °C. Noticeably, upon scaling up to a membrane area of 452.16 cm 2 by connecting six three-channel modules in series (multi-step membrane), its separation performance satisfied the C 3 H 6 circulation requirements during the HPPO process (purity ≥97.5 % and recovery rate ≥85 %). Furthermore, a simulation of membrane operation under industrial working conditions (22 bar and 56.3 °C) was performed. By fixing the separation factor at 15, a minimum membrane area of 800 m 2 met the requirements at the cost of membrane permeance with 120 GPU. The corresponding economic calculation indicated a maximum of 91.8 % annual capital cost saving compared with the distillation process, paving the way for the practical application of membranes.

Polyamide membranes with tannic acid-ZIF-8 for highly permeable and selective ion-ion separation

Xing Lai,Hongxiang Zhang,Weiye Xu,Jian You,Huaiyin Chen,Yongzhao Li,Weihe Yu,Jianying Huang,Changfa Xiao,Yuekun Lai,Weilong Cai

Highly permeable polyamide (PA) membranes with precise ion selection can be used for many energy-efficient chemical separations but are limited by membrane inefficiencies. Herein, polyphenol-mediated ZIF-8 nanoparticles with hydroxyl-rich hollow structure were synthesized by tannic acid tailored regulation. PA-based membranes with fast penetration, high retention, and precise Cl − /SO 4 2− selection were then synthesized through spatially and temporally controlling interfacial polymerization with modified ZIF-8 nanoparticles (tZIF-8) as aqueous phase additives or as interlayers. The effects of the embedding position of tZIF-8 on the structure, morphology, physicochemical properties, and performance of PA-based membranes were explored through a sequence of characterization techniques. The results revealed that the PA-based membrane with tZIF-8 embedded in the PA layer could achieve a high water permeance of 24.8 L m −2  h −1 bar −1 with a high retention of 99.4 % Na 2 SO 4 and a Cl − /SO 4 2− selectivity of 141, which was superior to most state-of-the-art PA-based membranes. Comparatively, the Cl − /SO 4 2− selection of the PA-based membrane with tZIF-8 embedded between the PA layer and the substrate was 136, while the water permeance was slightly enhanced to 28.2 L m −2  h −1 bar −1 . Excitingly, the resulting membranes all exhibit superior antifouling properties and stability. Our facile strategy for tuning membrane microstructures provides new ideals into the development of highly permeable and excellently selective PA-based membranes for precise ion sieving.

Preparation of magnetic ZIF-8/reduced graphene oxide composite aerogels for efficient removal of ofloxacin

Zhangxu Chen,Fanli Meng,Qihong Cai,Minglian Fu,Danchen Zhu

To solve the problem of ofloxacin pollution in contaminated water, Fe3O4 and ZIF-8 were prepared by a solvothermal method and stirring at normal temperature, respectively. Furthermore, a series of magnetic ZIF-8/reduced graphene oxide (Fe3O4/ZIF-8/rGO) composite aerogels with different mass ratios were synthesized by reduction and freeze-drying methods. The products were characterized using a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, an X-ray diffractometer, a field emission scanning electron microscope, and a thermogravimetric analyzer. Taking ofloxacin (OFL) as the target pollutant, an orthogonal test was carried out to explore the optimum conditions for removing ofloxacin with the composite aerogel: under the conditions of an illumination time of 8.0 h, a mass ratio of 10 : 15 : 20 for Fe3O4/ZIF-8/rGO, a composite aerogel dosage of 8 mg, and an initial concentration of ofloxacin of 50 mg L−1, the removal rate of ofloxacin reached 98.87%. After being recycled five times, the removal rate remained at 90.23%. The prepared Fe3O4/ZIF-8/rGO composite aerogel and the developed ofloxacin removal procedure could provide a reference for the treatment of quinolone antibiotics and PPCPs in polluted water. Moreover, they can be expected to alleviate the energy crisis and enhance the application of solar energy to deal with environmental remediation in the future.

In-situ Cyanide Functionalization of ZIF-8 by γ-Irradiation for Photochemical removal of Uranium

Yukun Zhang,Chong Chen,Changjiang Hu,Jianfeng Zhao,Jun Ma

Photoreduction conversion of soluble U(VI) to insoluble U(IV) is regarded as an ideal strategy for removing uranium from water. The Cyanide-based photocatalysts shows promises for efficient uranium removal but their green synthesis remain significant challenges. Herein, we develop a γ-irradiation-induced strategy for in-situ -CN generation via imidazole ring opening in ZIF-8 MOFs for uranium photoreduction, circumventing the use of toxic cyanide sources. In-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and in-situ X-rays coupled diffraction infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) reveal morphological evolution via imidazole ring cleavage and -CN formation kinetics during irradiation. Research indicated that -CN-functionalized ZIF-8 displayed superior uranium photoreduction activity through -CN-UO22+ complexation and promotion of photo-induced electron transfer. Impressively, the uranium extraction capacity reached a value of 1532.4 mg/g, higher than most existing MOF-type photocatalysts. In-situ DRIFT spectroscopy revealed the intermediates of the photoreduction uranium reaction and their adsorption mode with the catalyst, providing a comprehensive mechanistic explanation. This work provides a sustainable pathway for uranium photoreduction and guidance for the green design of MOF-type photocatalysts.

Post-functionalized ZIF-8 for high-performance synergistic isolation of extracellular vesicles via co-precipitation

Mengxi Chen,Fang Xu,Shenyue Zhou,Yuanyuan Yu,Jiayu Xu,Lei Gan,Mengmeng Wang,Yuxia Sun,Haiyang Zhang,Weipeng Wang

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) and their cargos are increasingly being recognized as noninvasive diagnostic markers. The isolation of EVs from complex biological samples is crucial for subsequent analysis. Herein, a distearoyl phospholipid ethanolamine-functionalized zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8-DSPE) was developed, which combines the surface charge interaction of ZIF-8 with the synergistic effect of DSPE insertion into the phospholipid membrane of EVs to improve the EV isolating selectivity. Benefitting from this feature, it could be well compatible with the analysis of RNA and proteins in EVs. Furthermore, the ZIF-8-DSPE was utilized to isolate EVs from clinical plasma of primary colorectal cancer (CRC) patients, CRC patients with liver metastases (CRCLM) and healthy donors (HD). Proteomics results illustrated that 11 proteins were up-regulated in the CRCLM group compared to the CRC group, and 59 proteins were upregulated in the CRC group compared to the HD group. Furthermore, some proteins such as PRDX2, TFP1, FGG and F13A1 were found to be closely related to CRC progression and metastasis, and have the potential to be biomarkers for CRC. These findings proposed that it is a promising strategy to identify biomarkers from plasma EVs for early detection and disease monitoring of CRC.
