Tigecycline (TGC), a third-generation, broad-spectrum, potent antimicrobial drug based on a tetracycline structure, may pose potential hazards to ecosystems and human health due to its difficulty in natural degradation in the environment. However, the environmental degradation behavior of TGC has not been fully investigated, so it is still a major challenge to rationally design efficient, stable, environmentally friendly and cost-effective electrocatalysts for TGC degradation. In this study, Pd-ZnS NPs/CF composite electrode anchored on copper foam (CF) was synthesized by simple ultrasonic method and two-step electrodeposition. The degradation efficiency of TGC at the Pd-ZnS NPs/CF composite electrode was as high as 88.75 % within 30 min under neutral conditions, and the energy consumption was only 0.11 kWh/m³ . In addition, the overall Pd 2+ contribution was as low as 0.00005 M after the introduction of inexpensive ZnS. The Pd-ZnS NPs/CF composite electrode exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity and degradation of antibiotics under different aqueous environmental conditions. Suitable for degradation of a wide range of antibiotics with excellent cyclic stability. The TGC degradation rate was stabilized above 85.40 % after 240 min of continuous operation in a continuous flow reactor, and the composite electrode prepared once can be used for a long time. It highlights the broad application prospects of the composite electrode in the field of water treatment technology and the significant advantages of high efficiency, low energy consumption and stable long-term operation. In this study, the mechanism of action of ·OH and H* with TGC is also deeply investigated, and the dynamics of TGC degradation intermediates are probed using two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. Finally, the ecotoxicity of Pd-ZnS NPs/CF composite electrodes is investigated, which provides a simple and feasible idea for the preparation of efficiently degraded antibiotic cathodes.

Background With the rapid development of industrialization, the excessive emission of S 2− have become increasingly serious, leading to a surge in the content of S 2− in nature. Rapid and accurate detection of S 2− contamination in natural adaptogens is crucial for food safety. Annually, discarded eggshell waste, rich in organic and inorganic materials, poses environmental risks if landfilled. Utilizing waste eggshell membrane biomass for S 2− detection is cost-effective, yet designing biochar materials for sensors requires balancing catalytic enhancement and anti-interference capabilities. Improving the catalytic performance of biochar for colorimetric S 2− detection without metal ion interference presents a challenging issue. Results We first modified biochar (EBc) derived from waste eggshell membranes using a combination of thiourea and ZnS nanoparticles, fabricating ZnS-decorated, S–N co-doped biochar (ZnS-SN-EBc) nanozymes, which were applied for the colorimetric assay detection of S 2− contamination. The addition of thiourea significantly increases the proportion of pyridinic-N in biochar, enhancing the peroxidase-like activity of the nanozyme. The growth of ZnS nanoparticles on the biochar not only enhances the catalytic performance by increasing the S content but also reduces the content of oxidized S, thereby improving resistance to interference. The detection range for S 2− was expanded from 0.1 to 45 μM for EBc to 0.05–225 μM for ZnS-SN-EBc, and the limit of detection improved to 0.0397 μM. Additionally, ZnS-SN-EBc significantly enhanced metal ion interference resistance. S 2− detection in five types of adaptogenic herbs verified the accuracy and practicality of the colorimetric assay, with recovery rates comparable to national standards. Significance We innovatively repurposed waste eggshell membranes to develop a selective and catalytic peroxidase-like nanozyme, ZnS-decorated S–N co-doped biochar (ZnS-SN-EBc). The developed colorimetric assay utilizing ZnS-SN-EBc demonstrates significant potential for the detection of sulfur ions in adaptogenic herbs, thus contributing to both waste resource utilization and the advancement of food safety detection technologies.

Raspberry-like double-core shell CdS@ZnS@NiS material was prepared to use a simple one-step hydrothermal method, and then coated uniformly on carbon nanofibers (CNFs), resulting in the formation of highly efficient counter electrode (CE) for Zn-Cu-In-Se (ZCISe) quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs). The QDSSCs used CdS@ZnS@NiS/CNFs as CE reached power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.72%, which is higher than Cu 2 S/brass (8.42%). This result indicates the dual-core shell structure possesses better catalytic properties, which indicates that the raspberry-shaped double-core shell CdS@ZnS@NiS is a feasible competitor as CE material for QDSSCs.

A nanostructured Fe 2 O 3 /CdZnS/ZnS composite film was constructed on EH40 steel using anodization, hydrothermal, and successive ionic layer absorption and reaction method. The film can inhibit the diffusion of dissolved oxygen to the substrate steel in aerobic seawater, and anodic dissolution of the substrate steel in D. vulgaris containing anaerobic seawater, respectively. The film can inactivate bacteria by producing active chlorine under light, which improves its anti-adhesion efficiency. The film prepared by 50 times of ZnS deposition reaches the highest anti-adhesion efficiency of 71.0 % and 63.3 % toward P. aeruginosa and D. vulgaris under dark, and 98.5 % and 96.0 % under light, respectively.

The combination of two-dimensional (2D) materials with non-2D materials (quantum dots, nanowires and bulk materials), i.e. mixed-dimensional van der Waals (md-vdW) heterostructures endow 2D materials with remarkable electronics properties. However, it remains a big challenge to synthesize md-vdW heterostructures because of the difference of crystal symmetry between 2D and non-2D materials. Meanwhile, it is difficult to initiate the nucleation due to the lack of chemical active sites on chemical inert surfaces of 2D materials. Herein, we design a general chemical vapor deposition method for synthesizing a broad class of md-vdW heterostructures with well-aligned hexagonal symmetry including MoS2/FeS, MoS2/CoS, MoS2/MnS, MoS2/ZnS, Mo(SxSe1–x)2/ZnSxSe1–x, Mo(SxSe1–x)2/CdSxSe1–x. Combining with DFT calculation, we find that the hexagonal symmetry and the centered clusters of MoS2 and Mo(SxSe1–x)2 nanoflakes are two crucial factors to launch the hexagonally oriented growth and nucleation of non-2D materials on 2D materials. Our discovery opens an opportunity for the versatile hetero-integration of 2D materials and allows systematic investigation of physical properties in a wide variety of md-vdW heterostructures.

An open wound is significantly vulnerable to polymicrobial infections leading to higher level of inflammatory responses. For rapid healing processes, a wound greatly needs a biologically compatible wound dressing with unique properties including hydrophilicity, mechanical strength, anti-microbial, anti-oxidant abilities. In this present research investigation, biodegradable gelatine methacryloyl (GelMH) hydrogel loaded with zinc sulphide nanoparticles (ZnS NPs) was developed for improving the wound healing efficiency. The synthesized materials were carefully characterized by UV–vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy to confirm formation of ZnS NPs. Then it was tested for swelling, degradation, In vitro drug release, DPPH Free Radical Scavenging and in viv o wound care potential. The free radical scavenging assays clearly revealed that the GelMH loaded ZnS NPs patches could efficiently inactivate experimentally produced free radicals. In vitro drug release also reveals that the GelMH loaded ZnS NPs patches is constantly released on PBS for at least 15 days until incubation. The wound healing study indicated that GelMH loaded ZnS NPs patches could effectively promote the wound healing. From the overall analysis, it is observed that GelMH loaded ZnS NPs patches is highly excellent promising materials for the therapeutic potential of wound care management.

Quantum dots (QDs) have received considerable attention in information displays owing to their high quantum yield, high colour purity and low-cost fabrication. However, light emission for ultra-thin QD films with low mass percentage of QDs still need to be improved because the blue light can directly transmit the films, leading to insufficient energy to excite the QDs. In this study, we report QD films based on a poly(zinc methacrylate) coating with alloyed green-emitting CdZnSeS/ZnS quantum dots (QDs@PZnMA) together with high refractive-index BaTiO3 nanoparticles to enhance the scattering coefficient of the QD films. Results demonstrate a 7.5-fold increase in the absorption coefficient, 11.3-fold increase in the scattering coefficient, 8.5-fold increase in the optical density (OD) and 8.6-fold increase in the green-light emission of QD films, compared with films that have the same mass percentage of pristine QDs. This approach provides a promising strategy for developing QD optical films with high scattering and enhanced light emission for flexible displays.

Zn 2+ and H 2 S are essential to maintain normal prostate function, and sometimes can evolve into weapons to attack and destroy prostate cancer (PCa) cells. Nevertheless, how to achieve the targeted and effective release of Zn 2+ and H 2 S, and reverse the concentration distribution within PCa tumor cells still highly challenging. Herein, combined with these pathological characteristics of prostate, we proposed a tumor microenvironment (TME) responsive Zn 2+ -interference and H 2 S-mediated gas synergistic therapy strategy based on a nanoplatform of tannic acid (TA) modified zinc sulfide nanoparticles ( [email protected] ) for the specific treatment of PCa. Once the constructed pH-responsive [email protected] internalized by cancer cells, it would instantaneously decomposed in acidic TME, and explosively release excess Zn 2+ and H 2 S exceeding the cell self-regulation threshold. Meanwhile, the in situ produced Zn 2+ and H 2 S synergistic enhancement of cell apoptosis, which is evidenced to increase levels of Bax and Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, release of Cytochrome c in cancer cells, contributing to inhibit the growth of tumor. Moreover, the TA in cooperation with Zn 2+ specifically limits the migration and invasion of PCa cells. Both in vitro and in vivo results demonstrate that the Zn 2+ -interference in combination with H 2 S-mediated gas therapy achieves an excellent anti-tumor performance. Overall, this nanotheranostic synergistic therapy provides a promising direction for exploring new strategies for cancer treatment based on specific tumor pathological characteristics, and provides a new vision for promoting practical cancer therapy.

We report highly-efficient red-emitting InP/ZnS-based quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QD-LEDs) fabricated via an all-solution-processed technique, in which colloidal ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) with tailoring compositions act as the electron transport layers (ETLs). The optical band gap, energy level and charge injection capability of ETLs can be manipulated by incorporation of various metal dopants with different valence states and ionic radii into ZnO NPs, and the QD-LEDs with ZnO:Mg NPs as the ETL exhibit a superior device performance over other counterparts. By rational passivation of Cl ions on the surface of ZnO:Mg NPs, a record external quantum efficiency (ηEQE) of 4.24% is successfully realized in the all-solution-processed red-emitting InP/ZnS-based QD-LEDs. The maximum luminance reaches a record 5595 cd m−2. The Cl@ZnO:Mg NPs not only provide a well-matched charge balance but also prevent interfacial exciton dissociation, boosting the enhancement of device performance. This work shows an effective composition-modulated interfacial engineering strategy for improving the performance of all-solution-processed QD-LEDs.

Based on the room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) peculiarity of Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs), a bifenthrin sensor was fabricated by coupling molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) on the surface of silane modified QDs via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The stepwise synthesis was realized with ZnS QDs-NH2-Br as the initiator, methacrylic acid (MAA) as the functional monomer, divinylbenzene (DVB) as the cross-linker, CuBr as the catalyst and 2,2′-bipyridine as the complexant. The smart RTP probe for bifenthrin was gained by surface molecular imprinting technology (SMIT) that can not only produce the stable RTP intensity of Mn-doped ZnS QDs, but can also enable more efficient recognition of the target molecule. The results presented show that the detection limit of the probe was 16.7 μg L−1. The RTP stability, selectivity and sensitivity of the bifenthrin sensor were evaluated by using a spectrophotometer. The high sensitivity was due to an electron-transfer mechanism between the target and the QDs, and the particular selectivity was due to SMIT. Therefore, this novel strategy combines RTP of Mn-doped ZnS QDs with ATRP to use the best aspects of both. It offers the advantages of straightforward preparation and processing, fast response, low toxicity and optical stability, so it is very promising for the detection of bifenthrin.
