Polyethylenimine grafted ZIF-8@cellulose acetate membrane for enhanced gas separation

Zhirong Hu,Haixia Zhang,Xiong-Fei Zhang,Mingmin Jia,Jianfeng Yao

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) combine the advantages of both polymers and inorganic fillers, and hold great promise for industrial gas separation. In this work, to enhance the interfacial compatibility between cellulose acetate (CA) matrix and ZIF-8 crystals, an interfacial design strategy was proposed by grafting polyethylenimine (PEI) onto ZIF-8 particles. The introduction of amine-rich PEI could regulate the surface property and maintain the pore accessibility of ZIF-8 crystals. In addition, the amine groups in PEI could interact with hydroxyl/carbonyl groups in CA chains to suppress the non-ideal voids at the ZIF-8/CA interface. With the aid of PEI, the interfacial compatibility between ZIF-8 and CA is substantially enhanced. Compared with pristine CA and ZIF-8@CA membranes, PEI grafted ZIF-8@CA (PZIF-8@CA) membrane exhibits a better gas separation performance, bearing a CO 2 permeability of 150.3 Barrer with CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 ideal selectivities of 44.2 and 53.7, respectively. The separation mechanisms are attributed to the superior interfacial property , the good dispersion of ZIF-8 particles, the amine groups in PEI, and the high CO 2 solubility of the CA matrix.

Loading and releasing behavior of carboxymethyl cellulose and chitosan complex beads

Ali A. Altam,Liping Zhu,Dafaalla Babiker,Hajo Yagoub,Shuguang Yang

The complex beads of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and chitosan (CHI) that are fabricated by interfacial complexation have a core-shell structure composed of a thin skin layer and a 3D entangled internal structure, which endows the beads with adsorption possibilities toward anionic and cationic molecules via electrostatic interaction. However, the loading and releasing behavior of such a system is essential and fundamental for their application yet has not been studied systematically. In this work, the influences of beads physical state, adsorbent dosage, agitation speed, solution pH and temperature on the loading behavior were investigated. The CMC@CHI beads demonstrated different loading efficiency to three typical dyes of methylene blue (MB), acid blue-113 (AB), and methyl orange (MO) with different charge status. The adsorption rate followed an order of MB ˃ AB ˃ MO, giving 97.4%, 73.3% and 20.2%, respectively. The releasing of three dyes from CMC@CHI beads also exhibited different rates, and MB release was found to be prolonged compared to AB and MO. The loading mechanism of dyes was further investigated via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. These CMC@CHI beads may have possible applications in mixed dye removal as well as encapsulating systems of drugs or sensitive chemicals with different charges.

In Situ Functionalization of Cellulose with Polyoxometalate for UV-Resistant Performance

Haibing Cheng,Lei Zhong,Weini Jia,Xiaoli Zhang,Qinghui Mao,Zhijie Liang

Polyoxometalate-based composite materials have recently attracted extensive attention due to their unique structural characteristics and physicochemical properties. In the present work, a flexible anti-UV blocker compatible with cotton fabric was prepared by simple covalent bond self-assembly of carboxyl group (−COOH) and phosphomolybdate. The resultant cotton fabrics were investigated and confirmed by FT-IR, PXRD and SEM-EDS, demonstrating the successful preparation of polyoxometalate-based composite fabric. The UV spectrum of as-designed composite fabric imparts excellent UV absorption capacity and the UPF value reaches 397.19, which is far superior to original cotton (7.09). Furthermore, the blocker was tested on the photosensitive material in direct UV irradiation, which proved its outstanding performance as a flexible, wearable, and visualized UV blocker. In addition, the experimental results confirmed that the prepared composite material exhibited an excellent and stable UV resistant performance (UPF: 100+) after 5 days UV aging irradiation and five times washing. The proposed fabrication strategy could promisingly endow polyoxometalate-based fiber materials with extensive applicability potential.

Flexible Reflective Electrochromic Devices Based on V2O5-Methyl Cellulose Composite Films

Shuokun Sun,Shichuang Cui,Fei Wang,Mingrui Gao,Wei Wei,Jinxiu Dong,Xiaoyan Xia,Quanyao Zhu,Jinyong Zhang

Electrochromic devices show great potential for color switchability and ease of manipulation for reflection tuning. However, the devices’ color fit and cycle stability make it difficult to meet the requirements of functional reflective product applications. Herein, a vanadium pentoxide (V2O5)–cellulose composite electrochromic film with remarkable cycling stability and a wide range of color options is presented. Flexible reflective electrochromic devices realizing free switching between yellow and blue were successfully assembled by the prepared composite films; in the test, the device possesses a low drive voltage (±1 V) and a rapid switching response time (≤5.6 s) and excellent working status after 1000 cycles. Besides, the assembled devices demonstrated an exceptional range of optical reflection modulation upon excitation. This study presents a direction for the selection of suitable devices in the field of flexible functional materials and broadens the scope of electrochromic applications.

Bamboo cellulose fibers prepared by different drying methods: Structure-property relationships

Shaodi Zhang,Qiuqin Lin,Xueyuan Wang,Yanglun Yu,Wenji Yu,Yuxiang Huang

Bamboo cellulose fibers (BCFs) has attracted increasing attention in many fields due to its high mechanical strength and interconnected porous structure. Drying is a key factor that determines the final structure and properties of BCFs. In this work, three kinds of BCFs, i.e., conventional-dried (CD-BCFs), freeze-dried (FD-BCFs), and supercritical CO 2 -dried (SD-BCFs), were prepared via different drying methods. The effects of drying methods on their supramolecular structure , porosity, and mechanical properties were studied, and the structure-property relationships were proposed. The CD-BCFs composed of well-aligned crystalline nanofibrils with a dense structure exhibited the best mechanical properties (tensile strength of 854.54 MPa). The SD-BCFs featured with interconnected 3D microfibril networks give a highly porous structure and the highest surface area of 9.162 m 2 /g. The FD-BCFs showed medium mechanical properties and surface area owing to the stacked lamellar microfibril network. This work provides guidelines for designing BCFs with proper structure for various end-use applications.

Cai Chenchen,Luo Bin,Liu Tao,Gao Cong,Zhang Wanglin,Chi Mingchao,Meng Xiangjiang,Nie Shuangxi

A variety of liquid energy exists in papermaking engineering and has not yet been developed and utilized. In addition, for the papermaking industry, the presence of slime can seriously affect the quality of the finished paper and can lead to paper breaking. The current slime control strategies cannot completely solve the problem and also have some low toxicity. In this study, a method of self-powered sterilization of cellulose fibers by using triboelectric pulsed direct current is reported. A liquid–solid triboelectric nanogenerator (L–S TENG) was used to convert the liquid energy of nanocellulose suspension into electrical energy and convert this electrical energy into pulsed direct current for self-powered sterilization of cellulose fiber. A hydrophobic coating material is used as solid triboelectric material and electrode for sterilization. Driven by L–S TENG, the electrodes exhibited an excellent sterilization rate against four microorganisms including Escherichia coli , Aspergillus niger , Candida albicans, and Klebsiella pneumoniae , which from slime in the papermaking industry. This study could provide a basic research theory for liquid energy harvesting in the papermaking industry, and also provide a new strategy for pulp sterilization. Graphical abstract

Preparation and properties of down feather fibers reinforced cellulose composite aerogel

Sun Weihao,Fang Yinchun,Wu Lingshuang

The application of cellulose aerogel is restricted by its weak mechanical property and dimensional stability due to the hydrophilic effect of the hydroxyl groups on the molecular chains, which are prone to structural crumpling during solvent exchange and drying processes. In this paper, down feather fibers (DFF) was dispersed into hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) matrix to prepare DFF reinforced cellulose composite aerogel anticipating to improve the mechanical and insulating properties. The basic physical and mechanical properties of HEC/DFF composite aerogels were characterized. And their acoustic and thermal insulation properties were also investigated. The results showed that HEC/DFF composite aerogels had low density (0.045 ~ 0.080 g/cm 3 ) and high porosity (90.09% ~ 94.42%). The mechanical properties of HEC/DFF were obviously improved by increasing the compressive stresses at the 80% compressive strain about 135%, and the compression modulus increased from 46.37 kPa of pure HEC aerogel to 128.65 kPa. The reinforcement of DFF for HEC aerogels was arisen from the combination of physical and chemical strengthening action. HEC/DFF composite aerogel has sound absorption coefficient of 0.938, and the thermal conductivity of 0.06773 W/m·K, showing excellent sound absorption and good heat insulation properties. Therefore, this study provides a new method to reinforce cellulose composite aerogels with excellent insulation properties by using bio-based down feather fibers.

Pickering emulsions synergistically stabilized by cellulose nanocrystals and peanut protein isolate

Chunling Nie,Xianpan Bu,Sihong Ma,Jiahui Zhang,Qin Ma,Weilong Li,Xiaowan Zhang,Hao Wu,Shuqian Hu,Guangsen Fan,Jianguo Wang

This study investigated the stability of Pickering emulsions using cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and peanut protein isolate (PPI) complexes as emulsifier. CNCs were prepared by cotton linter cellulose using ammonium persulfate oxidation method; the size was determined to be 145.7 ± 2.6 nm with by a dynamic light scattering particle sizer. Transmission electron microscopy showed that CNCs exhibited a needle-like rigid structure. The prepared CNCs were complexed with PPI at pH 3.5, and CNCs/PPI complexes were used as emulsifiers to prepare Pickering emulsions. Stability analysis, including of storage stability and oxidative stability, revealed that Pickering emulsions with CNCs/PPI complexes were much more stable than those of pure CNCs or PPI. Pickering emulsions exhibited good stability with low creaming index after 30 d of storage. Compared with pure rapeseed oil, Pickering emulsions showed good oxidative stability with lower content of primary products (peroxide values, POVs) and secondary products (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, TBARS) of lipid oxidation following dark auto-oxidation at 37 °C for 14 d. This study demonstrates CNCs/PPI complexes exhibit better emulsifying properties than pure CNCs or PPI. Pickering emulsions stabilized by CNCs/PPI complexes is stable, edible, and surfactant-free, and is expected to have applications in oil-water separation and lipophilic nutrient delivery.

Bimetal-organic framework-derived nanotube@cellulose aerogels for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation

Yuhang Wu,Yuwen Li,Tao Zhao,Xue Wang,Vera I. Isaeva,Leoid M. Kustov,Juming Yao,Junkuo Gao

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derived powder catalysts are prone to agglomerate and difficult to recycle in water, thus resulting in their low utilization and secondary pollution in water treatment. Herein, a composite aerogel (CoFe0.8@NCNT@CA) loaded with bimetallic MOF-derived carbon nanotubes on cellulose aerogel was developed for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade tetracycline (TC). The CoFe0.8@NCNT@CA/PMS system exhibits an excellent TC removal rate (97.1 % TC removal within 20 min). The outstanding performance of the composite catalyst is closely related to the synergistic effect of bimetallic catalytic sites, graphitic N structure, and porous network. Interestingly, carbon nanotubes and cellulose in the composite catalyst form a semi-coated porous structure, which can effectively enhance the adhesion of carbon nanotubes and expose abundant active sites while ensuring mass transfer. This study provides a strategy for synthesizing novel composite aerogel with an excellent structure and physicochemical properties for water treatment.

Depletion stabilization of emulsions based on bacterial cellulose/carboxymethyl chitosan complexes

Yamei Zhang,Shujuan Yang,Haiyun Tang,Sihui Wan,Wenqi Qin,Qu Zeng,Junhao Huang,Gaobo Yu,Yuhong Feng,Jiacheng Li

The regulation of the magnitude of the depletion effect is necessary for accurately predicting and explaining the emulsion stabilization mechanism. Herein, the bacterial cellulose/carboxymethyl chitosan (BC/CCS) complexes with tunable assembled behaviors were prepared and designed via electrostatic interaction . Specially, the emulsions stabilized by BC/CCS complexes exhibited excellent stability as compared with that stabilized by BC polymers alone. At pH 9.6, BC/CCS complexes in the continuous phase induced long-range depletion-stabilization effect to stabilize emulsions. Additionally, the magnitude of depletion effect of BC/CCS complexes could be improved by increasing BC concentration, and effectively stabilized emulsions. Furthermore, with the decrease to pH 7.0, the interfacial adsorption layers at the oil-water interface prevented oil droplets from agglomerating, but did not show better emulsion stability. These results clarified that the magnitude of the depletion effect could be controlled by altering BC-based complexes particles, which would be useful for the applications of emulsions in numerous fields.

Catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose with sulfonated carbon catalyst to produce levoglucosenone

Haiping Yang,Shuaishuai Lei,Kun Xu,Yang Fang,Xu Chen,Yingquan Chen,Xianhua Wang,Hanping Chen

In this study, a new method for the efficient preparation of levoglucosenone (LGO) by biomass catalytic pyrolysis with sulfonated carbon catalyst was proposed. The influence of pyrolysis temperature and the mass ratio of catalyst to glucose or cellulose on the formation of LGO was systematically studied. The results show that when the mass ratio of glucose to sulfonated carbon is 1:1 and the pyrolysis temperature increases from 300 °C to 500 °C, the LGO selectivity first increased and then decreased, reaching a maximum value of 46.4% at 400 °C. Meanwhile, the yield of LGO increased steadily with the increase in pyrolysis temperature, and the yield of LGO was reached a maximum value of 2.48 wt% at 500 °C. However, with the increasing amount of catalyst, the selectivity of LGO increased steadily, while the yield of LGO increased at first and then decreased. Overall, the optimum pyrolysis temperature and mass ratio of the glucose/sulfonated carbon catalyst for LGO production were 400 °C and 1:1, respectively. Density functional theory calculations showed that the catalytic action of sulfonated carbon changed the reaction pathway of glucose pyrolysis, making glucose more inclined to form LGO through a 1,2 dehydration mechanism.

Flame Retardant Cellulose-Based Hybrid Hydrogels for Firefighting and Fire Prevention

Nabipour Hafezeh,Shi Hu,Wang Xin,Hu Xiangming,Song Lei,Hu Yuan

Wildfires have been recognized as a natural incident in some forests, however, fire season is now more severe and extensive, even in tropical rainforests in which fire could have damaging impacts. A hydrogel is a 3-D polymeric structure encompassing cross-linked and hydrophilic macromolecules. In comparison with water, hydrogels have shown some superiorities in terms of water-binding, cooling, and sealing, which make them be applied in forest fire prevention programs for improving fire-extinguishing performance. In this study, an environmentally friendly phosphorus-modified methylcellulose/silica hybrid hydrogel was prepared based on the modified methylcellulose by 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide–itaconic acid (DOPO-ITA) and silica nanoparticles. In the fire prevention experiments, the grass treated with the methylcellulose@DOPO-ITA@silica hybrid hydrogel shows self-extinguishing behavior, whereas those treated with ordinary water or methylcellulose hydrogel can be easily ignited after one week. In the firefighting experiments, the methylcellulose@DOPO-ITA@silica hybrid hydrogel displays a much shorter extinguishing time and lower consumption volume than ordinary water and the methylcellulose@DOPO-ITA hydrogel. This work presents an environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and biodegradable cellulose-based hybrid hydrogel for the fire prevention and firefighting of wildfires.
