A highly selective colorimetric detection method for putrescine on the basis of an optimized derivatization reaction was established. With the aids of o -phthalaldehyde (OPA) and thioglycolic acid (TGA), putrescine was derived to become red derivatives (PUT-RD), the form that can be detected qualitatively and quantitatively by visual inspection and UV-vis spectrophotometer at λ max of 490 nm, respectively. Key parameters affecting the experiment were investigated by one-factor-at-a-time and response surface analysis. At the optimal condition, this colorimetric method achieved good linearity at putrescine concentrations ranging from 0.8 to 200 μM with detection limit of 0.44 µM. The method also has good selectivity when common amino acids and inorganic ions, as well as ethylenediamine, 1,3-propanediamine, 1,5-pentanediamine, and 1,6-hexanediamine were used as interferences. The established colorimetric method was successfully employed for the detection of putrescine in 10 commercial fish products.

Lu-Al-Si-O-N tapes with different thickness were used to join gas pressure sintered Si 3 N 4 ceramics. The microstructure of the joints and the influences of the joint thickness and joining temperature on the bonding strength of the as-joined Si 3 N 4 ceramics have been investigated. The highest bonding strength about ~ 300 MPa of the joined specimens was achieved by using 450 µm interlayer at 1450 °C. The existence of Si 3 N 4 nanowires was beneficial for the improvement of the bonding strength by interweaving the oxynitride glass matrix in the joint region.

Copper-based compounds exhibit broad prospects in the electrocatalytic oxidation of biomass for sustainable production of high-value-added chemicals due to their passivated oxygen evolution reaction (OER) competitiveness. However, the sluggish reaction kinetics remain the main challenge in constraining their scalable application. Herein, a highly selective electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) on CuO is achieved via photoinduced surface reconstruction. The experimental results confirmed that the photogenerated hole accumulation on the surface of CuO with matched valence band position can promote the CuOOH active phase generation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and the overall relationship between structure and selectivity indicate the CuOOH species can accelerate the spontaneous dehydrogenation process of hydroxyl group . Therefore, the activated CuO electrode under illumination can effectively regulate the conversion of 5-Hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA) key intermediates and exhibits accelerated reaction kinetics, FDCA yield increased by 17.79 % compared to dark condition. Additionally, a general enhancement effect on the oxidation of benzyl alcohol and furfuryl alcohol was also revealed. This work introduces photoassistance effect for the first time in HMF oxidation, opening up prospects for the application of photoelectric synergy in biomass value-added conversion and providing insights into the activity mechanism of Cu-based catalysts in organic oxidation.

The microwave-assisted cleavage of C–O linkages in benzyl phenyl ether was investigated at 200 °C in the presence of ZrP or SBA-15 doped with or without metal catalyst (Pd/C or Ru/C). The total yield of phenol and benzyl alcohol from benzyl phenyl ether depolymerization with ZrP was 26.91%, while the yield of phenol reached 26.11% for that with Pd/C. Hybrid catalysts performed effectively for promoting the formation of phenol. A conversion of 85.70% was achieved with ZrP–Pd/C catalyst, and the selectivity to phenol reached 47.32%. The highest yield of phenol was obtained at 1 h, and repolymerization was remarkable at longer reaction time. Based on the reaction using phenol and benzyl alcohol as the reactants, benzyl phenyl ether might be decomposed into phenol and benzyl alcohol following with the repolymerization producing thermally stable polymers in the presence of Pd.

Catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) is an enzyme-free amplification method that it has been proved to be useful in signal amplification. In this work, hydroxylamine- O -sulfonic acid (HOSA) is used as an oxide for LumAuNPs chemiluminescence (CL) in mismatched catalytic hairpin assembly (MCHA) for the first time. Functionally, this system consists of two hairpin species, the biotin-labeled hairpin H1 and LumAuNPs-labeled hairpin H2, which are stable and unable to hybridize in the absence of target DNA. However, the MCHA is initiated in the presence of target DNA, which regenerates the target DNA to catalyze another new cyclic reuse and leads to the formation of numerous H1-H2 complexes. In this case, HOSA serves as an oxidizing agent reacted with LumAuNPs, which can generate strong CL. In this fascinating hairpin assembly amplification strategy, mismatched base sequences are designed in hairpin H2 to decrease nonspecific CHA products, which reduce the background signal significantly. Under the optimal experimental conditions, this approach shows high selectivity even toward single-base mismatch and improves sensitivity greatly for target DNA with a linear range of 2.5 fM–1 pM, achieving a detection limit as low as 0.8 fM. The developed method holds a great promise for further applications in early clinical diagnosis and therapy.

In this work, monodisperse giant polymersomes are fabricated by dewetting of water-in-oil-in-water double emulsion droplets which are assembled by amphiphilic block copolymer molecules in a microfluidic device. The dewetting process can be tuned by solvation between solvent and amphiphilic block copolymer to get polymersomes with controllable morphology. Good solvent (chloroform and toluene) hinders dewetting process of double emulsion droplets and gets acornlike polymersomes or patched polymersomes. On the other hand, poor solvent (hexane) accelerates the dewetting process and achieves complete separation of inner water phase from oil phase to form complete bilayer polymersomes. In addition, twin polymersomes with bilayer membrane structure are formed by this facile method. The formation mechanism for different polymersomes is discussed in detail.

When MgO+ZrO 2 were used as a sintering aid to SiC ceramics, it was found that ZrO 2 reacted with SiC and MgO to form ZrC and a magnesium silicate. This reaction may provide a new route to synthesize ZrC or prepare ZrC/SiC composites by reaction sintering using ZrO 2 , SiC, and MgO as starting materials. In the present work, formation process of the ZrC phase in the SiC–MgO–ZrO 2 system was addressed. Subsolidus phase relations at 1550 °C of the SiC–MgO–ZrO 2 system and the related SiC–SiO 2 –ZrC–ZrO 2 –MgO (Si–Zr–Mg–O–C) system were investigated.

Scope The study aimed to investigate the regioselectivity of methylation of luteolin (3′,4′,5,7-tetrahydroxyflavone) in human in vitro and in vivo. Methods and results Recombinant human catechol- O -methyltransferase (COMT) and human liver S9 were utilized to study the kinetics of meta (3′)- and para (4′)- methylation of luteolin, and urine samples from volunteers after giving a luteolin-containing formulation were collected to determine the ratio of para-/meta-production. The results showed luteolin favored a para-methylation, with a ratio of of para-/meta-production in CL int (1.43 in recombinant human COMT and 1.47 in human liver S9), which was contrary to the known substrates of COMT. However, the result of urine sample assay showed a preference of meta-methylation with a ratio of of para-/meta-production (0.460 ± 0.126). To elucidate the mechanism for different preference of methylation of luteolin in vitro and in vivo, metabolism stability of the meta- and para-methylated luteolin was evaluated in human liver microsomes and recombinant human CYP450s, which revealed that para-methylated luteolin was more easily demethylated by human CYP1A2 and CYP3A4/5 than meta-methylated luteolin. Conclusion Luteolin was a rare substrate of human COMT favoring a para-methylation, but further demethylation by human CYP1A2 and CYP3A4/5 caused a preference of accumulation in meta-methylated luteolin in vivo.

Polyurea (PU) spheres with size of 2–10 μm were derived through the polymerization of CO 2 with 1,4-butanediamine, and characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and TG analysis. It was demonstrated that the PU spheres displayed flower-like morphology with the betel thickness around 30 nm, and they had high thermal stability. The resultant PU spheres were used to immobilize metal particles, and a series of PU-supported metal nanocatalysts including Pt/PU, Au/PU, Pd/PU were prepared via just mixing the metal precursors with the PU spheres in water, followed by the reduction of metal ions by NaBH 4 . Transmission electron microscopy examination indicated that the metal nanoparticles were distributed uniformly on the surface of the PU spheres with mean particle size less than 3.0 nm, and the Pt particles existed mainly in the form of metallic state as confirmed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The performance of the Pt/PU catalyst was tested in the catalytic hydrogenation of o -chloronitrobenzene, and a high selectivity of 99.5% toward o -chloroaniline at complete conversion of o -chloronitrobenzene was obtained at room temperature.

The application of competitive immunoassay brings many advantages to the detection of trace biomolecules and has the potential to be applied to urine-based clinical practice. However, this type of detection method has strict requirements for secondary antibody incubation processes and analysis equipment, leading to strong demands for convenient, rapid, and inexpensive detection platforms. In this study, a mechanical competitive immunosensor (MCI) was proposed for the detection of human serum albumin (HSA) based on goat anti-rabbit @Fe2O3 magnetic beads with magnetic sensitization. With the doping of Fe2O3, the conversion layer of MCI responds more accurately and rapidly to stress. In addition, goat anti-rabbit conjugated with animated Fe2O3 nanoparticles were introduced as secondary antibodies for signal amplification. Under the synergistic effect of the magnetic force of magnetic beads and the stress caused by the specific binding of antigen and antibody, the deformation of the film was amplified, which can effectively change the conductive pathway formed by doped carbon nanotubes, resulting in a larger output electric signal. Through competitive immunoassay for HSA, a limit of detection (LOD) of 68 ng/mL was achieved, which was an order of magnitude lower than direct detection methods. With high reproducibility and stability, MCI demonstrated effectiveness in the detection of HSA at a clinically significant concentration range (0.1–
$50 \; \mu $
g/mL). Moreover, MCI showed excellent specificity and selectivity, which held promise to offer an alternative tool for clinical diagnosis of urine HSA levels in nephrotic patients.

Thiocyanate (SCN − ) is an anionic contaminant and is a biomarker of environmental cyanide exposure. Therefore, it is particularly necessary to develop a simple, fast and sensitive method for SCN − assay. Herein, a fluorescent assay method was developed to determine SCN − based on Cu 2+ -triggered oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (OPD). Without SCN − , OPD was oxidized by Cu 2+ and the resultant product (i.e., OPD oxide) exhibited a high fluorescence. However, in the presence of SCN − , Cu 2+ reacted with SCN − ; and thus, the oxidation ability of Cu 2+ toward OPD was reduced, resulting in a weak fluorescence. Several important parameters such as the concentrations of Cu 2+ and OPD, pH and the reaction time were optimized. Under the optimized conditions, the linear range was 5–80 μM and the limit of detection was 5 μM for SCN − assay. In addition, the high selectivity and the satisfactory recoveries in tap water and artificial saliva were achieved for SCN − detection due to the strong chelation between SCN − and Cu 2+ . The whole detection process was simple and fast without using complex nanoparticles. More importantly, the developed assay method will have promising applications in monitoring of SCN − for the assessment of water safety and human health. Graphical abstract

Ruthenium dioxide (RuO 2 ) is one of the most promising acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts to replace the expensive and prevalent iridium (Ir)-based materials. However, the lattice oxygen oxidation induced Ru dissolution during OER compromises the activity and stability. Amorphous materials have been identified as a viable strategy to promote the stability of RuO 2 in acidic OER applications. This study reported a nanoporous amorphous-rich RuMnO x (A-RuMnO x ) aerogel for efficient and stable acidic OER. Compared with highly crystalline RuMnO x , the weakened Ru–O covalency of A-RuMnO x by forming amorphous structure is favorable to inhibiting the oxidation of lattice oxygen. Meanwhile, this also optimizes the electronic structure of Ru sites from overoxidation and reduces the reaction energy barrier of the rate-determining step. As a result, A-RuMnO x aerogel exhibits an ultra-low overpotential of 145 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and durability exceeding 100 h, as well as high mass activity up to 153 mA mg −1 Ru at 1.5 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). This work provides valuable guidance for preparing highly active and stable Ru-based catalysts for acidic OER.
