Surface modification of bagasse fibers based on polyphenol-induced self-supplied lignin for the creation of composite SBS-modified asphalt

Ling Yang,Wenjie Luo,Yassen Muhammad,Fanyu Meng,Jiashun Li,Zhenxia Zhao,Jing Li

Agroforestry solid waste bagasse fiber (BF) possesses sustainable, carbon-neutral characteristics when used as a reinforcement material for asphalt pavements. However, the incompatibility between BF and the asphalt matrix limits its wide application. This study proposes a strategy for cost-effective and environmentally friendly modification of fiber surfaces, aiming to transform a drawback into an advantage. That is, the lignin in BF, which affects the tensile strength of fibers, is dissolved by a deep eutectic solvent (DES) system, and then the lignin is reborn on the surface of the fibers with the assistance of tannic acid . Based on the hydrophobicity and free radical trapping properties of lignin, regenerated lignin is expected to act as a natural coupling agent between BF and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) asphalt materials and as an anti-aging agent for asphalt. The experimental results showed that the modified BF realized the enhancement of asphalt interfacial compatibility and toughening of asphalt matrix. Specifically, the shear resistance, viscoelasticity and rutting resistance of the modified BF/SBS-modified asphalt were improved by 46.61%, 22.67% and 30.06%, respectively, and the UV aging susceptibility was decreased by 75.02% compared with that of the BF/SBS-modified asphalt. In conclusion, this work introduces a simple and practical strategy for enhancing the interaction between BF and asphalt, which is crucial for advancing biomass recycling and green transportation development.

Date Seed Polyphenol Pills as Renewable Raw Materials Showed Anti-Obesity Effects with High Digestible Antioxidants in 3T3-L1 Cells

Remah Sobhy,Xiaobo Zou,Osama M. Morsy,Ahmed A. Zaky,Ibrahim Khalifa

Natural polyphenol-rich plant resources, such as agricultural waste, were proven to diminish insulin resistance and weight gain in rats on a high-fat diet. To test whether date seed polyphenol pills (DSPPs) might lower adipose tissue accumulation by precisely affecting adipocytes, we explored the impacts of DSPPs on cell proliferation, differentiation, and lipolysis in 3T3-L1 cells. We utilized tablets made commercially from date seed polyphenols that were mostly composed of epicatechin (45.9 g/kg). The total polyphenol and antioxidant capacities of the digested and non-digested DSPPs were also evaluated. DSPPs at doses of 25, 50, and 100 µg/mL hindered the proliferation of both pre-confluent preadipocytes and mature post-confluent adipocytes. DSPPs decreased the quantity of viable cells in completely developed adipocytes. Treatment with 100 µg/mL of DSPPs decreased the basal lipolysis of completely differentiated adipocytes but modestly boosted epinephrine-induced lipolysis. A significant transcription factor for the adipogenic gene, the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR), was repressed by DSPPs, which significantly decreased lipid buildup. The total polyphenol and antioxidant capacities were also increased after digestion with a good bubble Pearson correlation between both. DSPPs may have anti-obesity and anti-diabetic characteristics by inhibiting adipocyte development and basal lipolysis, which could be commercially industrialized. Keywords:agricultural waste;date seed polyphenols;industrial-scale pills;3T3-L1 cells;obesity

Nanofiltration membranes fabricated by plant polyphenol-intermediated MXene and polyethyleneimine layer-by-layer self-assembly for efficient dye/salt separation

Yijing Hu,Zhihao Chen,Yidan Ding,Yanchao Xu,Hongjun Lin,Wei Yu,Jiaheng Teng,Liguo Shen,Yang Jiao,Bao-Qiang Liao

The traditional layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly method used to prepare nanofiltration (NF) membranes with polyelectrolytes often suffers from low permeability caused by the restricted free volume of the selective layer. Furthermore, substrate surfaces typically require rigorous chemical treatment with potent acids or bases to achieve the necessary charge for adsorbing the initial polyelectrolyte layer. To address these issues, a green and straightforward aqueous immersion method was utilized in this investigation to form a coating of plant polyphenol tannic acid (TA) on the substrate surface. The TA coating served as an intermediary for the LBL self-assembly of negatively charged 2-dimensional material MXene nanosheets and positively charged polyethyleneimine (PEI), resulting in a well-structured NF membrane. By utilizing a 4-bilayer number, 0.05 mg/mL MXene concentration, 1.0 mg/mL PEI concentration, and PEI molecular weight of 1800 g mol −1 , an NF membrane with an ultrahigh pure water permeance of 204.0 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and 99.9% Evans Blue rejection was produced. Furthermore, the membrane possesses an ultra-high dye/salt separation factor of 758.1, surpassing most of the previously reported data. The innovative plant polyphenol-mediated MXene and PEI LBL self-assembly strategy proposed can be applied not only in NF membrane preparation but also in inspiring the design of advanced MXene composite materials for environmental and energy applications.

Nature Plant Polyphenol Coating Silicon Submicroparticle Conjugated with Polyacrylic Acid for Achieving a High-Performance Anode of Lithium-Ion Battery

Meng Tian,Peiyi Wu

Silicon as an anode material of a Li-ion battery has attracted many researchers widespread attention for proper lithium intercalation potential and superhigh theoretical capacity. However, a Si-based anode possesses so poor a cycle life that it cannot be commercialized on account of the drastic volume expansion of silicon particles in the process of charge/discharge. Herein, we present a simple, green, and inexpensive way to improve cycle life of silicon-based electrodes by modifying active materials (more cheap and fragile Si submicroparticles (SiSMPs) than silicon nanoparticles) using tannic acid (TA) (a biocompatible nature plant polyphenol) and then interacting it with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) binder. The tannic acid conformal coating can protect SiSMPs from side reactions with the electrolyte and can conjugate with the PAA binder and conductive materials, which keeps the electrode structure integrity during cycling. Furthermore, the TA coating makes the PAA binder form a 3D cross-linked network, which can enhance the binding strength compared with linear PAA chains, and the wet adhesion of the TA mussel-inspired coating can ensure good adhesion between SiSMPs and other components in electrolytes. Therefore, the combination between moderate amounts of TA coating and PAA can improve cycle performance and rate performance of low-cost submicrosized Si particle-based Li-ion battery anodes.

Fabrication of 3D porous superhydrophobic sponges using plant polyphenol-Fe3+ complexes as adhesive and their applications in oil/water separation

Xiaoxia Ye,Yiwen Cui,Le Ke,Kaiyang Gao,Xin Huang,Bi Shi

A robust and 3D superhydrophobic composite sponge was facilely prepared by stable coating of multiple walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) onto melamine sponge (MS) using polyphenol-Fe 3+ complexes as the low-cost and efficient adhesives. The as-prepared superhydrophobic composite sponges featured ultra-low density, large porosity, high robustness and elasticity, as well as flame resistance. The loading of MWCNTs influenced the superhydrophobicity of sponge, and the optimized loading of MWCNTs was determined to be 3.0%, with a water contact angle of 159.8°. The 3D superhydrophobic sponge exhibited high absorption capacity to a wide range of oils and organic solvents , up to 38–127 times of its own weight dependent on the variety of oil and organic solvent. After 10 recycles of repeative absorption, the loss of absorption capacity was as low as 0.9% per cycle. The 3D superhydrophobic sponge was also applied for continuous separation of spilled oil from water with a separation efficiency of 97%. Our approach could also be extended for coating other carbon materials on MS, including graphene and activated carbon. The resultant sponges were still superhydrophobic and exhibited high separation ability for immiscible oil/water mixture.

Reversal Effects of Bound Polyphenol from Foxtail Millet Bran on Multidrug Resistance in Human HCT-8/Fu Colorectal Cancer Cell

Yang Lu,Shuhua Shan,Hanqing Li,Jiangying Shi,Xiaoli Zhang,Zhuoyu Li

Foxtail millet is the second-most widely planted species of millet and the most important cereal food in China. Our previous study showed that bound polyphenol of inner shell (BPIS) from foxtail millet bran displayed effective antitumor activities in vitro and in vivo. The present research further implied that BPIS has the ability to reverse the multidrug resistance of colorectal cancer in human HCT-8/Fu cells, the IC50 values of 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu), oxaliplatin (L–OHP), and vincristine (VCR) were decreased form 6593 ± 53.8, 799 ± 48.9, and 247 ± 10.3 μM to 5350 ± 22.3 (3261 ± 56.9), 416 ± 16.6 (252 ± 15.6), and 144 ± 8.30 (83.8 ± 5.60) μM when HCT-8/Fu cells were pretreated with 0.5 (1.0) mg/mL BPIS for 12 h. The 12 phenolic acid compounds of BPIS were identified by ultraperformance liquid chromatography-triple-time of flight/mass spectrometry (UPLC-Triple-TOF/MS) method. Especially, the fraction of molecular weight (MW) < 200 of BPIS reversed the multidrug resistance in HCT-8/Fu cells, and ferulic acid and p-coumaric acid were the main active components, the IC50 values were 1.23 ± 0.195 and 2.68 ± 0.163 mg/mL, respectively. The present data implied that BPIS significantly enhanced the sensitivity of chemotherapeutic drugs through inhibiting cell proliferation, promoting cell apoptosis, and increasing the accumulation of rhodamine-123 (Rh-123) in HCT-8/Fu cells. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blot data indicated that BPIS also decreased the expression levels of multidrug resistance protein 1 (MRP1), P-glycoprotein (P-gp), and breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP). Collectively, these results show that BPIS has potential ability to be used as a new drug-resistance reversal agent in colorectal cancer.

Co-encapsulation of probiotic Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and polyphenol within novel polyvinyl alcohol/fucoidan electrospun nanofibers with improved viability and antioxidation

Jiage Ma,Zhongmei Tan,Mengguo Wu,Zihao Tian,Cong Xu,Jing Zhang,Yue Ma,Zhibiao Feng,Wei Yu,Bailiang Li,Yuchang Yao,Zhanmei Jiang,Juncai Hou

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/fucoidan (FUC) blend nanofibers were systematically fabricated to co-encapsulate probiotic Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 69–2 (LP69–2) and four kinds of polyphenols by electrospinning for the first time. Scanning electron microscopy showed that some areas of PVA/FUC nanofibers encapsulated with LP69–2 were locally broadened. Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction suggested that LP69–2 and polyphenol were successfully encapsulated in PVA/FUC electrospun nanofibers. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the addition of LP69–2 and polyphenol enhanced the thermal stability of nanofibers. Moreover, the incorporation of FUC and polyphenol significantly increased the ABTS + and DPPH radical scavenging ability of PVA nanofibers ( P  < 0.05). Notably, PVA/FUC/LP69–2/DMY nanofibers displayed the highest DPPH radical scavenging ability. After 21 d, these nanofibers loaded with polyphenols could maintain viability of LP69–2 over 7 lg CFU/g at 4 °C and the viability of LP69–2 in PVA/FUC/DMY nanofibers was the highest. Overall, the co -encapsulation of probiotic and polyphenol within PVA/FUC electrospun nanofibers increased the viability of probiotics and enhanced antioxidant activity of nanofibers. This study provided unique insights for protecting probiotics and developing novel functional foods with higher probiotics.

A green synthesis method of a mussel-inspired polyphenol-functionalized silica-based material and its highly efficient adsorption of gallium

Shiying Fan,Yao Liu,Zetao Zhang,Mengnan Huang,Yuejiao Wang,Jing Gao,Ying Xiong

Three-dimensional mesoporous silica is a distinctive nanomaterial celebrated for its unique structure, substantial specific surface area, enhanced utilization of active surfaces, and improved adsorption and catalytic reaction capabilities. Nevertheless, its limited surface functional groups often impede its effective ion adsorption capacity. Here, inspired by the mussel-adhesive phenomenon, in this study, we introduced a straightforward layer-by-layer assembly approach to fabricate a new series of KIT-6@x-catechol/polyethyleneimine composites, the catechol/polyethyleneimine is the shell and KIT-6 is the core. Importantly, catechol(CA) and polyethyleneimine(PEI) polymers as selective layers with dense structures and abundant cation exchange groups, resulting in outstanding adsorption performance for our material. At a pH of 3.0, Ga(III) exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 88.65 mg g −1 on the adsorbent. Furthermore, the adsorbent demonstrated selective adsorption capabilities for Ga(III) over Ge(IV), Al(III), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Co(II). The primary adsorption mechanism of KIT-6@x-CA/PEI is chelation that occurs through coordination between the O atom on the phenolic hydroxyl group of CA and Ga 3+ , Ga(OH) 2+ , Ga(OH) 2 + under pH 3.0 conditions. In summary, the synthesized KIT-6@x-CA/PEI exhibits significant potential for water treatment containing Ga(III) through adsorption processes.

Effects of Lignin-Diverted Reductant with Polyphenol Oxidases on Cellulose Degradation by Wild and Mutant Types of Lytic Polysaccharide Monooxygenase

Kai Li,Yuan Wang,Xiao Guo,Bo Wang

Establishing a multi-enzyme synergistic lignocellulosic biodegradation system using lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase (LPMO) and polyphenol oxidases is vital for efficiently utilizing plant biomass waste, ultimately benefiting the carbon cycle and promoting environmental protection. Single-residue mutations of LPMO can improve the efficiency of lignocellulosic biomass degradation. However, the activity of mutant-type LPMO in relation to lignin-diverted reducing agents has not been sufficiently explored. In this study, laccase and tyrosinase were initially investigated and their optimal conditions and impressive thermal stability were revealed, indicating their potential synergistic abilities with LPMO in lignocellulose biodegradation. When utilizing gallic acid as a reducing agent, the activities of LPMOs were increased by over 10%, which was particularly evident in mutant-type LPMOs after the addition of polyphenol oxidases. In particular, the combination of tyrosinase with either 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylacetone orp-coumaric acid was shown to enhance the efficacy of LPMOs. Furthermore, the highest activity levels of wild-type LPMOs were observed with the addition of laccase and 3-methylcatechol. The similarities between wild and mutant LPMOs regarding their activities in lignin-diverted phenolic compounds and reducing agents are almost identical, suggesting that the single-residue mutation of LPMO does not have a detrimental effect on its performance. Above all, this study indicates that understanding the performance of both wild and mutant types of LPMOs in the presence of polyphenol oxidases and various reducing agents constitutes a key link in the industrialization of the multi-enzyme degradation of lignocellulose.

Different polysaccharide-enhanced probiotic and polyphenol dual-functional factor co-encapsulated microcapsules demonstrate acute colitis alleviation efficacy and food fortification

Rui Sun,Zhongyi Lv,Ying Wang,Menghui Li,Jianrui Qi,Kai Wang,Haihua Yang,Tianli Yue,Yahong Yuan

Probiotics and polyphenols have multiple bioactivities, and developing co-encapsulated microcapsules (CM) is a novel strategy to enhance their nutritional diversity. However, the development of CMs is challenged by complicated processing, single types, and unclear in vivo effects and applications. In this study, the co -microencapsulations of polyphenol and probiotic were constructed using pectin, alginate (WGCA@LK), and Fu brick tea polysaccharides (WGCF@LK), respectively, with chitosan-whey isolate proteins by layer-by-layer coacervation reaction, and their protective effects, in vivo effectiveness, and application potential were evaluated. WGCA@LK improved the encapsulation rate of polyphenols (42.41 %), and remained high viability of probiotics after passing through gastric acidic environment (8.79 ± 0.04 log CFU/g) and storage for 4 weeks (4.59 ± 0.06 log CFU/g). WGCF@LK exhibited the highest total antioxidant activity (19.40 ± 0.25 μmol/mL) and its prebiotic activity removed the restriction on probiotic growth. WGCA@LK showed strong in vitro colonic adhesion, but WGCF@LK promoted in vivo retention of probiotics at 48 h. WGCF@LK showed excellent anti-inflammatory effects and alleviated symptoms of acute colitis in mice. These findings provide unique insights into the fortification of probiotic-polyphenol CMs by different polysaccharides and the development of novel health foods with rich functional hierarchies and superior therapeutic effects.

Facile Fabrication of Injectable Multifunctional Hydrogels Based on Gallium-Polyphenol Networks with Superior Antibacterial Activity for Promoting Infected Wound Healing

Minglang Zou,Cuiping Chen,Mingda Wang,Chen Lei,Yongming Wang,Fang Luo,Da Huang,Meishui Wang,Houbing Zheng,Biao Wang,Zhenyu Lin,Zuquan Weng

Multifunctional hydrogels hold significant promise for promoting the healing of infected wounds but often fall short in inhibiting antibiotic-resistant pathogens, and their clinical translation is limited by complex preparation processes and high costs. In this study, a multifunctional hydrogel is developed by combining metal-phenolic networks (MPNs) formed by tannic acid (TA) and gallium ions (Ga 3 ⁺) with chitosan (CS) through a simple one-step method. The resulting CS-TA-Ga 3 ⁺ (CTG) hydrogel is cost-effective and exhibits desirable properties, including injectability, self-healing, pH responsiveness, hemostasis, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial activities. Importantly, the CTG hydrogels are effective against antibiotic-resistant pathogens due to the unique antibacterial mechanism of Ga 3 ⁺. In vivo studies demonstrate that the CTG hydrogel promotes follicle formation and collagen deposition, accelerating the healing of infected wounds by inhibiting blood loss, suppressing bacterial growth, and modulating the inflammatory microenvironment. These findings highlight the CTG hydrogel's potential as an advanced and translational dressing for enhancing the healing of infected wounds.

Development of sustainable and active food packaging films based on alginate enriched with plant polyphenol carbon dots and layered clay

Long Mao,Zhiye Dong,Fang Dong,Xianglong Dai,Zhiming Cao

Natural polymer based food packaging has attracted more and more attention, but the lack of active functions of natural polymer hinders its application in the field of active packaging. In this study, chlorogenic acid carbon dots (CGA-CDs) was synthesized mildly using natural plant polyphenol CGA as carbon source, and CGA functionalized layered clays (LDHs@CGA) was introduced as reinforcing agent. Alg active films were fabricated by solution casting method using natural polysaccharide-alginate (Alg), CGA-CDs and LDHs@CGA. The results showed that the average particle size of the synthesized CGA-CDs was ∼2.0 nm, with obvious graphitized structure inside and active groups (-OH and -NH 2 , etc.) outside, showing obvious UV absorption and antibacterial activity. With the addition of CGA-CDs, UV barrier, antibacterial, thermal stability, hydrophobicity and flexibility of Alg active films were significantly improved. When the amount of CGA-CDs reached 2 %, UV transmission (280 nm) and of Alg active films was only 2.66 %, which was reduced by 88.1 % compared with pure Alg film. The highest antibacterial rate against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus reached 86.0 % and 91.6 %, respectively. Freshness preservation experiment of fresh-cut apples indicated that Alg active coating incorporating CGA-CDs maintained the lowest browning index and mildew. These results indicate that the excellent active functions of CGA-CDs can promote the application of Alg matrix in the field of natural polymer active packaging.
