One-step construction of Bi2S3/C-TiO2 heterojunction from NH2-MIL-125(Ti) for enhanced photocathodic protection

Shaoming Yang,Yaqi Wang,Jiayi Chen,Yun Feng,Jiahui Li,Yongxin Liu,Liangpeng Zeng,Ji Zhao,Jiali Zhang

Owing to its environmental compatibility and energy conservation properties, photocathodic protection (PCP) has emerged as a promising approach for metal corrosion protection. The key to efficient PCP lies in developing semiconductor composite materials that combine excellent photoelectrochemical performance with a simple preparation process. Herein, a carbon-doped TiO 2 /Bi 2 S 3 composite (Bi 2 S 3 /C-TiO 2 ) was fabricated via a single-step, low-temperature hydrolysis strategy using NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) as the precursor, concurrently achieving carbon doping and incorporating a narrow-bandgap semiconductor. Characterization by UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photoelectrochemical testing under illumination revealed that the composite exhibits significantly enhanced visible-light absorption while effectively suppressing photogenerated charge carrier recombination. Under optimized conditions, the Bi 2 S 3 /C-TiO 2 photoanode shifted the potential of coupled 304 stainless steel (304SS) to −464 mV (vs. Ag/AgCl) under visible-light irradiation—substantially below its corrosion potential—demonstrating effective photogenerated cathodic protection for 304SS.

In Situ Assembly of Ti-Zr Bimetallic Organic Cages towards High-Performance Photocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline Hydrochloride

Yu-Teng Zhang,Jing- Yu Sun,Jian Li,De-Sheng Wei,Wan-Yi Lan,Nan Lv,Shuang-Bao Li

This study reports one-pot microwave-assisted solvothermal synthesis of Ti-Zr bimetallic organic cages (TiZrT-BTC-α, where α denotes the actual Ti molar percentage and T represents the tetrahedral cage structure). The reaction employed zirconocene dichloride (Cp 2 ZrCl 2 , Cp =  η 5 -C 5 H 5 ), titanocene dichloride (Cp 2 TiCl 2 ) and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H 3 BTC) as solid precursors to form a V 4 F 4 (V = vertex and F = face) coordination tetrahedron. The presence of the characteristic Ti-O vibration band at 420 cm -1 in the FT-IR spectrum, along with the characteristic Ti 4+ band signal at 458.6 eV in the XPS spectrum, collectively demonstrates the successful incorporation of titanium into the molecular cage structure. Notably, the introduction of titanium endowed the material with visible light absorption capability and modulates its electronic structure, reducing the band gap value from 3.73 eV (ZrT-BTC) to 2.48 eV (TiZrT-BTC-7.9). The photocatalytic activities of TiZrT-BTC-α were evaluated using tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) as a target pollutant under visible light illumination. Among the series, TiZrT-BTC-7.9 demonstrated excellent photocatalytic activity, achieving 92.17% degradation efficiency for TC (20 mg/L) within 3 hours. Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy combined with radical trapping experiments identified superoxide radicals (·O 2 - ) served as the dominant reactive species. This work paves the way for developing cage-based photocatalysts with tunable optoelectronic properties.

Achieving Ultra-Low Friction in Ti-6Al-4 V Alloy: Hydration Lubrication Mechanisms of HEC-Glycerol Composite

Sheng Dezun,Yu Hongliang,Zhang Xiao,Zhou Xin

Reducing alloy friction to achieve ultra-low friction is a valuable approach to save energy and reduce pollution from oil use, which is a major challenge for researchers. This study introduces a successful method to achieve ultra-low friction in Ti-6Al-4 V using a hydrated lubricant composed of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC). And the effects of speed and concentration on lubricating were investigated. It was found that excessive sliding speeds may lead to lubricant detachment and consequent friction increase, indicating that the adsorption ability of HEC needs to be enhanced in future studies. In addition, when the concentration exceeds 5 wt%, wear loss tends to stabilize across tests with different concentrations, while the friction force increases with rising concentrations. Based on these findings, microscopic studies were conducted to investigate the mechanism of friction reduction. Notably, distinct topographic features resembling ‘valleys’ and ‘plateaus’ were identified on the wear scars in a nanoscale scope. The movement of the surfaces induces the hydrated HEC lubricant to flow from the lower valleys to the higher plateaus, suggesting elastohydrodynamic lubrication mechanisms to form robust films. The valleys serve as lubricant reservoirs, while the plateau tops support the lubricant films to prevent contacts between Ti-6Al-4 V and Si 3 N 4 . The schematic illustrations depict the microscopic mechanisms for achieving of ultra-low friction on Ti-6Al-4 V alloy.

Enhanced lattice oxygen redox reversibility in cobalt-free lithium-rich Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.6O2 cathode via Ti/Si dual modification

Yinxuan Liang,Guohuang Kang,Yanru Liu,Jinhui Zhang,Yao Lv,Kangning Cai,Yilei Zhang,Feiyu Kang,Yidan Cao

Lithium-rich manganese-based cathode materials, as promising candidates for next-generation high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries due to their high specific capacity (>250 mAh g −1 ) and cost-effectiveness, are limited by severe capacity decay and voltage fade driven by irreversible structural transitions and oxygen release during cycling. Here, we report a Ti/Si dual-element modification strategy for cobalt-free Li 1.2 Ni 0.2 Mn 0.6 O 2 (LNMO) cathodes. The Ti/Si co-modified TS-LNMO cathode demonstrates superior structural stability and electrochemical performance. Bulk Ti 4+ doping stabilizes the oxygen framework via robust Ti–O bonds and enhances the lattice oxygen redox reversibility, while an in situ formed Li 2 SiO 3 layer suppresses interfacial side reactions, enhances lithium-ion diffusion, and prevents HF-induced erosion. As a result, the TS-LNMO cathode achieves 90% capacity retention after 200 cycles at 0.5 C and maintains ∼80% capacity in full cells cycled to 4.8 V. Additionally, the TS-LNMO cathode exhibits impressive rate performance even at a high rate of 5 C. This work offers an effective strategy for advancing cobalt-free, high-performance lithium-rich cathodes for sustainable energy applications.

Synthesis of Plate-Like TS-1 Zeolites with a Controllable b-Axis Thickness and Ti Coordination States

Hongyu Wang,Fumin Wang,Kaiwei Wang,Xubin Zhang,Changhao Bing,Xiaolu Fan,Tongxue Zhang,Syed Mujtaba ul Hassan

Developing an approach for the efficient synthesis of TS-1 zeolites with desirable morphologies and tunable coordination environments for Ti active sites is a pivotal challenge in the design of high-performance catalysts and zeolite crystal engineering. Herein, we report a cost-effective and efficient additive, guanidinoacetic acid (GAA), and conduct a systematic study on the synthesis of plate-like TS-1 zeolites using GAA as an additive. Introducing GAA during hydrothermal synthesis not only modulates the morphology of TS-1 crystals but also permits GAA to adequately chemically interact with titanium precursors to form hexa-coordinated Ti species. TS-1 zeolites with a controllable b-axis thickness in the range of 80–110 nm, and abundant framework Ti and hexa-coordinated Ti species are successfully achieved by optimizing the synthetic parameters. Through SEM, FT-IR, XPS, TEM, and XRD analysis, the mechanism of GAA altering crystal growth is mainly to inhibit the growth of the (010) plane. A b-axis-oriented TS-1 zeolite enriched with hexa-coordinated Ti species displays better catalytic performance in the 1-hexene epoxidation reaction than the conventional TS-1 zeolite containing only framework Ti species (35 vs 24%). This can be ascribed to the more active hexa-coordinated Ti species and shorter diffusion distance. This synthetic strategy provides a way to change the zeolite morphology and tune the number and distribution of Ti species in TS-1 zeolites.

Ba/Ti co-doping to improve O-redox reversibility and structural stability of Li-rich layered cathodes

Jiacheng Xiao,Yuqing Liu,Jiarui Wang,Zexin Mo,Chenyu Liu,Zhan Lin,Dong Luo

Lithium-rich manganese-based cathode materials, represented as xLi 2 MnO 3 ·(1-x)LiMO 2 (M = Ni, Co, or Mn), exhibit high specific capacity and low cost, making them promising candidates for next-generation high-energy-density lithium-ion battery cathodes. However, the low covalency of the Li–O–Li configuration renders these cathode materials highly susceptible to irreversible oxygen release and structural evolution, leading to severe voltage and capacity degradation, which hinders their practical application. To address this issue, this study employs a Ba/Ti co-doping strategy to modulate the oxygen electron and reinforce the structure of lithium-rich manganese-based cathode materials. Post-cycling results indicate that Ti/Ba co-doping effectively suppresses electrolyte corrosion and surface/interface reactions, improves the reversibility of O-redox during cycling, and enhances the structural stability of both the bulk and surface of the materials. As a result, the Ba/Ti co-doped sample exhibits an excellent capacity retention of 95.2 % after 300 cycles.

Solvothermal synthesis of urchin-like V–Ti–O hierarchical micro-nanostructures for the catalytic ammoxidation of chlorotoluenes

Yuan Chen,Yelin Li,Wanjun Tang,Tingcheng Li,Qingliang You,Guangyong Xie

In the field of heterogeneous catalysis, it still remains a challenge in controlled preparation of micro-nanostructured composite oxide catalysts. In this regard, a series of urchin-like V–Ti–O micro-nanostructures with varying Ti/V molar ratios are successfully synthesized by the reaction between tetrabutyl titanate (TBOT) and vanadyl oxalate via a facile one-step solvothermal process and subsequent calcination. The influences of reaction conditions, such as the ratio of reactant, the acidity of reaction system, and the use of glycol on the morphologies and oxidation state of vanadium are investigated. The results show that urchin-like hierarchical micro-nanostructures are formed, on which a large number of one-dimensional nanobelts radially grow from the center. Vanadium oxide species are highly dispersed on the external surface of the anatase TiO 2 structure. The obtained V–Ti–O catalysts are tested for the ammoxidation of mono- and dichlorotoluenes in gas-phase with molecular oxygen and exhibit high catalytic activity in converting chlorotoluenes to corresponding nitriles.

A dimensionally stable anode DSA-coated titanium electrode (RuO2-IrO2/Ti) for electrocoagulation removal of polystyrene microplastics

Min Zhang,Shuhuan Yin,Jia Wen,Bin Zheng,Shaohua Lin,Haixia Wu

With the increasing severity of microplastic (MPs) pollution in aquatic environments, the process of removing MPs from water environments by electrocoagulation (EC) technology has attracted widespread attention. In this study, EC using a dimensionally stable anode (DSA)-coated Ti electrode (RuO₂-IrO₂/Ti) under pulsed current was employed to treat wastewater containing polystyrene (PS) MPs. The effects of factors such as electrolyte concentration, initial solution pH, current density, pulse frequency, and pulse duty cycle on the PS removal efficiency were investigated. The results showed that the maximum PS removal of 94.2 % was achieved with an energy consumption of 5.5 kWh/g. The removal mechanism of PS was elucidated through analyses including scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of electrode, X-ray diffraction, fourier transform infrared, and zeta potential measurement of the flocs. Finally, the article conducts an economic analysis of this technology and provides an outlook on its application prospects. This study confirms that the EC technology using RuO₂-IrO₂/Ti can remove MPs from wastewater effectively, which may provide new insights for the development of MPs removal technologies.

Dual Strategy in Manganese-Based Cathodes with K Expansion and Ni/Ti Compression for Stable Sodium Storage

Zhengyang Li,Yuting Chen,Zhiyuan Guo,Tong Wang,Qi Fan,Yuhang Zhuang,Chenying Li,Mei Yang,Teng Xu,Yanchen Liu,Zhiyuan Li,Qin Sun,Xiaohui Zhu,Hui Xia

Manganese-based oxide cathodes for sodium-ion batteries face irreversible degradation from Mn 3+ Jahn–Teller distortion and Mn 2+ dissolution, compounded by cyclic strain during (de)sodiation. To address this, a P2-K 0.7 Mn 0.8 Ni 0.1 Ti 0.1 O 2 (KMNT) cathode via dual-regulation is developed: K + pillars expand alkali - metal layers enabling fast Na⁺ diffusion, while Ni/Ti co-doping compresses transition-metal layers to suppress Mn migration and Jahn–Teller effect. Besides, the K + pillars in discharged KMNT enhance Mn─O interactions via electrostatic effects, elevating Mn redox potentials and enabling a high average discharge voltage of ≈2.6 V (vs. Na + /Na). Even at a low potential cut-off of 1.5 V, the KMNT cathode demonstrates a reversible specific capacity of 124 mAh g −1 at 1 C with 98% capacity retention after 200 cycles and retains 83% after 900 cycles at a large current density of 10 C, significantly outperforming conventional Mn-based cathodes. Electrochemical and operando tests confirm the dynamic K + /Na + exchange mechanism and absence of Mn 2+ formation, establishing a new paradigm for stable Mn-rich cathodes.

Dual-functional Ti-doped Na3V2(PO4)2O2F cathode for high-rate and long-life sodium-ion batteries

Pengfei Wang,Yanyan Li,Bo Fan,Bin Yang,Liangdong Lin,Chen Bao,Qinghai Ma,Gaofeng Li,Dianbo Ruan

A series of Ti-doped Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 O 2 F materials were synthesized through a controlled coprecipitation method with precise Ti content regulation. Experimental results indicate that a 15 wt% Ti doping level (NVTOPF-0.15) optimally enhances electrochemical performance, yielding an initial discharge capacity of 119.3 mAh g −1 at 0.2C and retaining 84.3 % of its capacity after 2000 cycles at 5C. Titanium doping exerted a dual-functional effect: streamlining the synthesis pathway through synergistic coprecipitation with controllable particle size and enhancing the lattice substitution of Ti 4+ for V in VO 6 octahedra. This substitution refined the crystal structure and enhanced Na + diffusion kinetics. Titanium doping-induced structural reconstruction led to a reduction in particle size, thereby facilitating the electrochemical reaction kinetics. Additionally, using a combination of the Randles-Sevcik equation and theoretical calculations, it was found that titanium doping significantly increased the Na + diffusion coefficient and decreased the band gap. This study presents a dual-functional titanium-doping approach for high-rate and long-life sodium-ion cathode materials. The synthesis of NVTOPF via the co-precipitation method will provide new guidance for the development and application of positive electrode materials in sodium-ion batteries.

Synergistic tuning of electrical and thermal transport properties in Bi2SeS2 thermoelectric material via Ti/Cu co-doping

Rui-Hua Chen,Suniya Siddique,Hua-Jing Zhang,Ning Chen,Zhuo-Ming Xu,Zi-Long Zhang,Yue-Xing Chen,Zhuang-Hao Zheng,Fu Li

Herein, a Ti/Cu co-doping strategy is employed in Bi 2 SeS 2 to optimize its electrical and thermal transport properties through carrier regulation and microstructure modulation. The Ti/Cu co-doped Bi 2 SeS 2 samples were synthesized by mechanical alloying followed by spark plasma sintering. It is found that the co-doping boosts electrical conductivity while preserving a moderate Seebeck coefficient of 150–200 μV K −1 . This yields a high power factor of 5.5 μW cm −1 K −2 at 773 K. Moreover, the lattice thermal conductivity is reduced to ∼0.25 W m −1 K −1 , primarily due to effective phonon scattering induced by lattice strain and point defects. Finally, a peak zT of ∼0.80 is achieved at 773 K in Bi 1.96 Ti 0.04 SeS 2 -1 %Cu, surpassing the solely Cu-doped and Ti-doped counterparts by ∼22 % and 40 %, respectively. These findings reveal that multi-element doping is an effective approach for tailoring both charge and phonon transport, providing valuable insights for the design of advanced thermoelectric materials.

Trabecular-like Ti-6Al-4V scaffolds for orthopedic: fabrication by selective laser melting and in vitro biocompatibility

Huixin Liang,Youwen Yang,Deqiao Xie,Lan Li,Ning Mao,Changjiang Wang,Zongjun Tian,Qing Jiang,Lida Shen

Porous metal scaffolds play an important role in the orthopedic field, due to their wide applications in prostheses implantation. Some previous studies showed that the scaffolds with trabecular bone structure reconstructed via computed tomography had satisfactory biocompatibility. However, the reverse modeling scaffolds were inflexible for customized design. Therefore, a top-down designing biomimetic bone scaffold with favorable mechanical performances and cytocompatibility is urgently demanded for orthopedic implants. An emerging additive manufacturing technique, selective laser melting , was employed to fabricate the trabecular-like porous Ti-6Al-4 V scaffolds with varying irregularities (0.05-0.5) and porosities (48.83%–74.28%) designed through a novel Voronoi-Tessellation based method. Micro-computed tomography and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the scaffolds’ morphology. Quasi-static compression tests were performed to evaluate the scaffolds’ mechanical properties . The MG63 cells culture in vitro experiments, including adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation, were conducted to study the cytocompatibility of scaffolds. Compressive tests of scaffolds revealed an apparent elastic modulus range of 1.93–5.24 GPa and an ultimate strength ranging within 44.9–237.5 MPa, which were influenced by irregularity and porosity, and improved by heat treatment. Furthermore, the in vitro assay suggested that the original surface of the SLM-fabricated scaffolds was favorable for osteoblasts adhesion and migration because of micro scale pores and ravines. The trabecular-like porous scaffolds with full irregularity and higher porosity exhibited enhanced cells proliferation and osteoblast differentiation at earlier time, due to their preferable combination of small and large pores with various shapes. This study suggested that selective laser melting-derived Ti-6Al-4 V scaffold with the trabecular-like porous structure designed through Voronoi-Tessellation method, favorable mechanical performance, and good cytocompatibility was a potential biomaterial for orthopedic implants.
