Electrodeposition of Ag nanodendrites SERS substrates for detection of malachite green

Rong Wang,Liping Zhang,Shiying Zou,Hong Zhang

In this paper, novel Ag nanodendrites (Ag NDs) substrates were designed and fabricated on indium tin oxide (ITO) glass by using cyclic voltammetry electrodeposition. This method was simple, facile and controllable without any seed, template or surfactant. The influence of electrodeposition conditions on the microstructure and SERS-active of Ag NDs substrate were studied. Under the optimized conditions, the as-prepared Ag NDs exhibited superior SERS activity toward malachite green(MG) with high enhancement effect of 5.4 × 10 9 and low detection limit of 9.4 × 10 −13  M. Moreover, the Ag-NDs substrate shows extremely good uniformity and reproducibility with low relative standard deviation of 12.6% for substrate-to-substrate. In addition, a logarithmic correlation between MG concentration and Raman intensity was obtained, with the linearly dependent coefficient (R 2 ) of 0.984. The as-prepared Ag NDs substrates were successfully applied to the determination of MG in environmental water, with recoveries in the range of 87.8% to 109.6%. These results show high potential of the Ag NDs as effective SERS substrates for rapid detection of other trace-level contaminants in environment water.

The Synthesis and Tribological Properties of Carbonized Polydopamine/Ag Composite Films

Yang Ming,Jia Zhengfeng,Pang Xianjuan,Shao Xin,Zhen Jinming,Zhang Ran,Ni Junjie,Jiang Jinlong,Yu Bo

In this paper, polydopamine/silver (PDA/Ag) nanoparticles were easily synthesized. Then, the PDA/Ag nanoparticles were sprayed on copper substrate and heat-treated under argon to get carbonized PDA/Ag (CPDA/Ag) composite films. Transmission electron microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed to investigate the conversion of PDA and AgNO 3 into CPDA and Ag, respectively. Results showed that the PDA/Ag composite films heat-treated at 500 °C had much better friction reduction and anti-wear properties than other samples. The tribofilms containing C, N, O, Ag and Cu played an important role on reducing friction and increasing wear resistance.

Ag-Ag2CO3/Bi2MoO6 composites with enhanced visible-light-driven catalytic activity

Junlei Zhang,Zhen Ma

Novel Ag-Ag 2 CO 3 /Bi 2 MoO 6 composites were obtained through in situ formation of Ag 2 CO 3 rods/nanoparticles onto Bi 2 MoO 6 nanosheets, followed by photoreduction. These composites were found to be much more active than Bi 2 MoO 6 in photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) under visible-light irradiation. In particular, an Ag-Ag 2 CO 3 /Bi 2 MoO 6 composite with a theoretical Ag 2 CO 3 /Bi 2 MoO 6 mass ratio of ∼27.5% exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity. It was also the most active in photocatalytic degradation of methyl blue (MB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), due to the enhanced visible-light absorption and efficient separation of photogenerated carriers. The good reusability of Ag-Ag 2 CO 3 /Bi 2 MoO 6 was verified by cycling degradation experiments. The dominant active species were found to be photogenerated holes (h + ). A possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed.

Crosslinked pectin nanofibers with well-dispersed Ag nanoparticles: Preparation and characterization

Ke Li,Sisi Cui,Junli Hu,Yifa Zhou,Yichun Liu

Nanofibers with well-dispersed Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) are promising for some applications. Dispersion electrospinning is a straightforward preparation method but is suffered from the negative effects that the further treatments of nanofibers after electrospinning may bring to the dispersed AgNPs. In this study, we report a post reduction method to fabricate nanofibers with well-dispersed AgNPs. Crosslinked nanofibers of a hydrophilic polysaccharide, pectin, are used. When being immersed in the aqueous solution of AgNO 3 , the crosslinked pectin nanofibers swell, allowing Ag + ions enter inside. The surrounding crosslinked pectin macromolecules functionalize as in situ reducing reagents to reduce Ag + ions, nucleating the crystallization of AgNPs locally. X-ray diffraction characterizations indicate that the formed AgNPs are face-centered cubic crystalline. Results of optical imaging, UV–vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron dispersive spectrometry as well as transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicate that the content and size of AgNPs increase with the increase of AgNO 3 concentration and incubation time. SEM and TEM results show that the dispersion of the AgNPs does not affect the nanofibrous structure and size of the crosslinked pectin nanofibers. TEM results also demonstrate that AgNPs distribute homogeneously along both the length and diameter direction of nanofibers. The composite nanofibers can sustainably release silver for 4 weeks and inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli for 7 days, showing great potential as long-term antibacterial materials. The method may also be used to disperse AgNPs in other hydrophilic nanofibers which need further treatments after electrospinning.

Black phosphorus-based field effect transistor devices for Ag ions detection*

Hui-De Wang,David K Sang,Zhi-Nan Guo,Rui Cao,Jin-Lai Zhao,Muhammad Najeeb Ullah Shah,Tao-Jian Fan,Dian-Yuan Fan,Han Zhang

Black phosphorus (BP), an attractive two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor, is widely used in the fields of optoelectronic devices, biomedicine, and chemical sensing. Silver ion (Ag+), a commonly used additive in food industry, can sterilize and keep food fresh. But excessive intake of Ag+ will harm human health. Therefore, high sensitive, fast and simple Ag+ detection method is significant. Here, a high-performance BP field effect transistor (FET) sensor is fabricated for Ag+ detection with high sensitivity, rapid detection speed, and wide detection concentration range. The detection limit for Ag+ is 10−10 mol/L. Testing time for each sample by this method is 60 s. Besides, the mechanism of BP-FET sensor for Ag+ detection is investigated systematically. The simple BP-FET sensor may inspire some relevant research and potential applications, such as providing an effective method for the actual detection of Ag+, especially in witnessed inspections field of food.

Homogeneously alloyed nanoparticles of immiscible Ag–Cu with ultrahigh antibacterial activity

Lingyan Yang,Liliang Chen,Yi-Chun Chen,Lei Kang,Jiantao Yu,Yuhang Wang,Chengjia Lu,Tsutomu Mashimo,Akira Yoshiasa,Chia-Hua Lin

Immiscible bimetallic Ag–Cu system has been synthesized by the pulsed plasma in liquid method with a graph of one pulse duration. Herein, by combining X-ray power diffraction, K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, our results indicate that homogeneously alloyed Ag–Cu nanoparticles (Ag–Cu NAs) have the average diameter about 2.1 nm, composed by 48.5 at% Ag and 51.5 at% Cu with chemical analysis and the estimated lattice parameter was 3.873 Å. The antibacterial property of Ag–Cu NAs was detected against E. coli and S. aureus strains according to the colony formed abilities of bacteria on agar plates covered with the nanoparticles. With very short incubation period, Ag–Cu NAs completely inhibited the E. coli and S. aureus growth at an ultralow concentration. The mechanism of antibacterial property of Ag–Cu NAs was performed by the inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry and the plane wave pseudopotential method implemented in the CASTEP package based on the density functional theory. The Ag + dissolution is correlated with antibacterial activity for Ag–Cu NAs-assisted antibacterial treatment. These findings obtained revealed that our Ag–Cu NAs could be served as a containing material of numerous bacteria-free products in order to avoid their bacterial contamination.

Ag-Ag3VO4/AgIO3 composites with enhanced visible-light-driven catalytic activity

Junlei Zhang,Zhen Ma

Ag-Ag 3 VO 4 /AgIO 3 composites composed of Ag-Ag 3 VO 4 particles (major component) and AgIO 3 nanosheets (minor component) were obtained via photoreduction of Ag 3 VO 4 /AgIO 3 composites prepared by sequential precipitation. The optimal Ag-Ag 3 VO 4 /AgIO 3 catalysts (in particular, the one with an AgIO 3 /Ag 3 VO 4 mass ratio of 6.4%) were found to be more active than AgIO 3 , Ag 3 VO 4 , and Ag-Ag 3 VO 4 in the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB), methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) under visible-light irradiation. Ag-Ag 3 VO 4 /AgIO 3 can be reused in cycling experiments. Photogenerated holes (h + ) and superoxide radical anions ( O 2 − ) were demonstrated by radical-capture experiments as the main active species in the photocatalytic degradation of RhB. The more efficient separation and transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs are responsible for the enhanced activity of Ag-Ag 3 VO 4 /AgIO 3 . A possible photocatalytic mechanism is proposed.

Determination of Thiols by Fluorescence using Au@Ag Nanoclusters as Probes

Zhong-Xia Wang,Shou-Nian Ding,Ezzaldeen Younes Jomma Narjh

A simple and label-free fluorescent assay for the sensitive determination of biological thiols was developed using Au@Ag nanoclusters. The sensing approach was based on the strong affinity of thiols to silver on the surface of the nanoclusters. In the presence of thiol-containing amino acids, the fluorescence of the Au@Ag nanoclusters was quenched due to the formation of a non-fluorescent coordination complex via the robust Ag-S bond, which allowed the determination of thiol-containing amino acids in a very simple and rapid way. Under the optimal conditions, an excellent linear relationship was present due to quenching of the Au@Ag nanoclusters over cysteine concentrations between 20 nM and 80 µM with a low detection limit of 5.87 nM. Glutathione was determined between 2 µM and 70 µM with a detection limit of 1.01 µM. In addition, the results reveal that the fluorescent assay has excellent selectivity toward thiol-containing amino acids compared to non-thiol containing amino acids. Moreover, the assay was successfully used to determine cysteine in human plasma, and thus Au@Ag nanoclusters are a suitable fluorescent probe for biological applications.

Polymethacrylic acid–facilitated nanofiber matrix loading Ag nanoparticles for SERS measurements

Hui Yang,Cheng Zhi Huang

Nanofiber matrix loading Ag nanoparticles have been applied for SERS measurements with the limitation of poor reproducibility. By introducing polymethacrylic acid (PMAA) into the electrospun solutions in this contribution, fairly uniform PMAA/poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) ultrafine fibers containing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were successfully prepared via electrospinning by means of in situ photo reduction of silver ions. PMAA can significantly improve the absorbing amounts of silver ions in the polymer owing to its linear structure with abundant carboxyl groups, which makes the content and size of formed AgNPs in the polymer matrix to be easily controlled under different light sources (such as desk lamp, 365 nm UV lamp, and 254 nm UV lamp). With the electrospun AgNPs/PMAA/PVP fibrous membranes, malachite green (MG), a significant environmental organic pollutant known for its genotoxicity, was successfully detected with RSD values below 0.2% through SERS signals.

Preparation of porous TiO2/Ag heterostructure films with enhanced photocatalytic activity

Fengquan Gao,Yong Yang,Tianhe Wang

TiO 2 /Ag nanostructured porous films were prepared by spin coating of P25 TiO 2 /colloidal silica on glass substrate and subsequent photochemical deposition of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The adhesion strength of the film on glass substrate was evaluated and the result indicated that porous films formed on the glass substrates were robust and durable. The porous structure of TiO 2 /SiO 2 film facilitated the implantation of uniformly dispersed AgNPs having sizes generally less than 10   nm. By acting as electron scavengers, AgNPs effectively provided an alternative electron transfer route, thus enhancing the photocatalytic efficiency for degradation of methylene blue (MB). Compared with the bare TiO 2 film derived from P25, TiO 2 /Ag porous films showed an improved photocatalytic activity. This conclusion was further supported by photocurrent density measurements on the films. The study also demonstrated experimentally that TiO 2 /Ag porous films had sustained stability with the photocatalysis maintaining its original activity after at least four consecutive reaction cycles.

Visual sensing of Hg2+ using unmodified Au@Ag core–shell nanoparticles

Li Lihua,Feng Dexiang,Fang Xian,Han Xiaowei,Zhang Yuzhong

In this work, we have developed a novel visual Hg 2+ sensor in aqueous solution using unmodified Au@Ag core–shell nanoparticles at room temperature, based on a redox reaction between Ag-shell and Hg 2+ . The prepared Au@Ag core–shell nanoparticles exhibited good monodispersity. In the presence of Hg 2+ , Hg 2+ was reduced into Hg (0) by Ag-shell, and deposited on the surface of Au-core to form Au–Hg alloys and caused nanoparticles aggregation, leading to the color changes of the solution from yellow to purplish red, and the surface plasmon resonance spectra of Au@Ag core–shell nanoparticles red shift. Under the optimal conditions, the visual sensor could selectively detect Hg 2+ as low as 0.4 µM with the naked eye and 5.0 nM by UV–vis spectra analysis methods. The designed sensor had several advantages: (1) the nanoparticles surface need not be functionalized. (2) The color change of the solution was in 2 s and could easily be observed with naked eyes. The visual sensor had been applied to detection of Hg 2+ in tap and lake water, which obtained satisfied result.
