Despite aluminum alloys are widely employed in concrete environments, such as in nuclear spent fuel casings and concrete formwork, they remain susceptible to severe corrosion and adhesion caused by concrete, which considerably shortens their service life. The development of low-adhesion superhydrophobic coatings offers a highly promising strategy to enhance both corrosion resistance and anti-adhesion performance. Here, a low-adhesion superhydrophobic coating is fabricated on 6061 aluminum alloy via a facile and scalable spray-coating process. A robust epoxy-based composite reinforced with hydrophobic SiO 2 and glass fibers (GF) is employed, achieving a water contact angle of 156.2°. A glass fiber skeleton interwoven with SiO 2 nanoparticle constitutes a micro‑nano hierarchical structure, which together with low surface energy established a stable Cassie–Baxter state. This hierarchical structure traps an air cushion at the interface, significantly reducing the actual contact area between corrosive media and the substrate. As a result, the coating effectively resists adhesion from both dry cement powder and wet cement slurry, demonstrating notable self-cleaning and anti-adhesion performance. Electrochemical tests conducted in simulated concrete interstitial solution showed that the low-frequency impedance modulus of the superhydrophobic coating increased by more than four orders of magnitude, with a protection efficiency of 99.85%. Moreover, the low adhesion superhydrophobic coating also possesses outstanding mechanical durability, thermal stability, and chemical stability. Therefore, the low-adhesion coating shows great potential for the durable application of aluminum alloy in concrete environment.

The Mg/Al hydrotalcite with different morphologies was prepared under mild conditions through a coprecipitation process. The sulfur- and phosphorus-free MA2 nanosheets were used in combination with MoDTC to improve the low load-bearing capacity and unsatisfactory tribological properties of organic molybdenum in PAO8. Especially, the 2.0 wt % MA2 nanosheets combined with 2.0 wt % MoDTC demonstrated the highest friction performances in PAO8. The results indicated that the synergistic effect between MA2 and MoDTC contributes to the formation of a stable tribofilm composed of MoS2, MgO, Al2O3, MoO3, Fe2(SO4)3, Fe2O3, and Fe3O4. This tribofilm not only could effectively protect the friction interface and provide friction-reducing and antiwear effects but also possess high film-forming rates (PB value) and load-bearing capacity.

Uniform DNTF/Al/NC energetic composite fibers with evenly dispersed components were prepared by electrospinning. • The interconnected fibrous framework accelerates the heat and mass transfer. • Electrospun fibers exhibit better combustion performance and safety performance. Although 3,4-dinitrofurazanfuroxan (DNTF) is a prominent high-energy explosive, its high mechanical sensitivity compromises its safety and limits the wide scale application in advanced solid propellants. To address this issue, DNTF/Al/Nitrocellulose (NC) energetic nanocomposite fibers with different NC contents were fabricated by electrospinning technology. The microstructure, morphological characteristics, and chemical composition were fully characterized by SEM, XRD, FT-IR, and XPS. SEM results confirm that the sample containing 40 wt % NC achieves uniform component dispersion and effectively reduces particle agglomeration, presenting the optimal morphological structure. The thermal decomposition behavior, combustion performance and mechanical sensitivity of the DNTF/Al/NC energetic nanocomposite fibers were systematically investigated in comparison with physically mixed composites. Benefiting from the continuous fibrous network structure, the DNTF/Al/NC energetic nanocomposite fibers exhibited accelerated heat and mass transfer kinetics, as evidenced by sharper exothermic peaks and intensified heat release behavior during thermal decomposition. Combustion tests demonstrate that the optimized composite delivers a shortened ignition delay time from 37.45 s to 31.80 s, and an elevated combustion temperature from 230.7 °C to 268.2 °C, realizing remarkably enhanced energy release efficiency. Moreover, the critical friction load increases from 216 N to 252 N and the impact sensitivity drop height increases from 35 cm to 45 cm, which verifies the significant reduction in mechanical sensitivity and prominent improvement in operational safety. In summary, the electrospun DNTF/Al/NC energetic nanocomposite fibers combine high energy release capacity with excellent safety performance. This facile structural modulation strategy offers a new approach to the rational design and controllable preparation of high performance energetic composite materials with balanced energy and safety. Enhancing the combustion efficiency of aluminum (Al) is a crucial research direction for solid propellants. Constructing an efficient fuel-oxidizer interaction environment through interfacial regulation is an effective approach. In this work, a synergistic strategy integrating polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-mediated interface regulation with core-shell structuring was adopted to fabricate a dual-layer core-shell Al@PVDF@HMX composite energetic materials (EMs). This composite exhibits an ultra-high heat of explosion (8416.8 J·g⁻¹), which is over 52.8% higher than that of the Al+HMX physical mixture. Explosion residue measurements show that the primary combustion products were AlN and Al₂O₃, and no large Al agglomerations were detected, meaning that the inhibition of Al particle agglomeration by the dual-layer core-shell structure and the shell-breaking combustion effect induced by PVDF should be the key factors for the heat of explosion enhancement. Simultaneously, it was demonstrated that the composite is superior safety to HMX, as its impact sensitivity (8%) and friction sensitivity (36%) are decreased by 91% and 64%, respectively. This work indicates that the dual-layer core-shell structured Al@PVDF@HMX can synergistically improve the reaction between Al and HMX, providing a new approach to improve the energy efficiency and safety of EMs.

A MIL-53(Al)-functionalized terahertz metasurface sensor was developed for the room-temperature detection of styrene, a potential volatile biomarker associated with lung cancer. The sensor combines the localized electromagnetic field enhancement of the terahertz metasurface with the adsorption enrichment capability of MIL-53(Al). Benefiting from the flexible one-dimensional channels, the size-compatible pore environment of MIL-53(Al), and the possible π–π and host–guest interactions between styrene molecules and the terephthalate linkers, the functionalized metasurface exhibits an enhanced sensing response toward styrene. APTES was introduced as an interfacial coupling layer to improve the immobilization and dispersion of MIL-53(Al) nanocrystallites on the metasurface. SEM and FTIR characterizations confirmed the formation of a nanocrystallite-stacked MIL-53(Al) coating and the successful introduction of both APTES and MIL-53(Al) onto the sensor surface. The optimized sensor achieved a sensitivity of 0.37 GHz/ppm and a limit of detection of 1 ppm within the concentration range of 1–100 ppm. In addition, the sensor showed good selectivity against several interfering VOCs, as well as acceptable repeatability and stability. This work provides a feasible strategy for integrating flexible MOF adsorbents with terahertz metasurfaces, offering a potential platform for rapid, label-free, and room-temperature detection of trace aromatic VOCs.

For the industrially promising reaction of CO 2 hydrogenation toward methanol, Cu/Zn/Al-based catalysts present a potential candidate, where the surface active structure dictates the catalytic performance, guiding ongoing research into structure–activity relationships. Herein, a series of CuZn x Al y (where the mol ratio of Zn/Cu = x , mol ratio of Al/Cu = y ) catalysts with varying compositions was synthesized via a coprecipitation method. Physicochemical characterization revealed that a small amount of Al (CuZn 0.56 Al 0.04 ) enhanced the specific surface area, improved the dispersion of Cu and Zn species, and optimized the Cu + /Cu 0 ratio, as evidenced by N 2 physisorption, XRD, and XPS analyses. In contrast, excessive Al content (CuZn 0.23 Al 0.83 ) led to a decline in surface area, pore volume, and surface exposure of active Cu and Zn species. Catalytic performance tests showed that CuZn 0.56 Al 0.04 achieved the highest CO 2 conversion (16.2%), methanol selectivity (56.3%), and methanol space–time yield (STY) (438 g MeOH kg cat −1 h −1 ), outperforming that of the commercial CuZnAl catalyst. In situ DRIFTS studies confirmed that methanol synthesis proceeded via a formate (HCOO) mediated pathway, with the optimal catalyst demonstrating superior efficiency in converting key intermediates (HCO 3 *, CO 3 *, HCOO*) to the final product. The study establishes that tailored Al content is crucial for modulating catalyst surface properties and ultimately promoting catalytic performance for methanol synthesis from CO 2 . Graphical abstract An optimal Al content in co-precipitated CuZn x Al y catalysts optimizes the surface active structure, enabling efficient CO 2 -to-methanol hydrogenation via the formate pathway.

(Fe/Zn/Ni)O·(Fe/Al) 2 O 3 spinels are widely used as raw materials for advanced ceramics and refractories and occur as precipitates in slag phases during nonferrous metal pyrometallurgy. The stability and phase-transformation mechanisms of these spinels are important for optimizing material performance and controlling metallurgical processes. The decomposition of Fe 3 O 4 , FeAl 2 O 4 , ZnFe 2 O 4 , ZnAl 2 O 4 , NiFe 2 O 4 , and NiAl 2 O 4 under various atmospheres was experimentally investigated, and phase evolution during reduction was elucidated. Thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses and reduction experiments showed that Fe(II)-bearing spinels tended to decompose at elevated temperatures in air. ZnFe 2 O 4 and ZnAl 2 O 4 were stable at temperatures up to 1500 °C in air and in an atmosphere with p O2 = 10 −6 atm. At low oxygen partial pressure, aluminate spinels exhibited greater stability. The reduction kinetics of these spinels were also analyzed. The reduction of Fe 3 O 4 , ZnFe 2 O 4 , NiFe 2 O 4 , and NiAl 2 O 4 was described by the Avrami-Erofeev model, indicating that the reduction process was controlled by the nucleation rate. The reduction of ZnAl 2 O 4 was described by a diffusion model.

The ignition process of aluminum powder significantly affects propellant combustion and agglomeration, making the control of ignition through adjusting the surface coating thickness an effective strategy. In this study, core-shell Al@PTFE composites with tunable PTFE shell thickness were successfully synthesized via plasma pretreatment combined with emulsion polymerization. Characterization results demonstrate that the PTFE shell thickness in Al@PTFE can be precisely regulated from 58 nm to 286 nm, corresponding to a mass fraction range of 4.6 wt% to 16.7 wt%. It was found that the PTFE coating not only effectively lowers the laser ignition threshold and shortens the ignition delay of aluminum but also enhances its ignition performance under high-temperature conditions. The underlying mechanism is that the abundant reactive fluorine species released during the thermal decomposition of PTFE can remove the surface Al₂O₃ oxide layer to form AlF₃, thereby significantly reducing both the ignition temperature and delay time. However, in propellant applications, although Al@PTFE composites significantly mitigate aluminum particle agglomeration during combustion, they simultaneously lead to a decrease in the overall burning rate and combustion temperature of the propellant. The tunable shell thickness strategy demonstrated here opens a new avenue for developing high‑performance aluminum fuels with controllable ignition and agglomeration characteristics for solid rocket propulsion.

The hydrolysis of lithium borohydride (LiBH 4 ) is very promising for on-site hydrogen generation to supply hydrogen since it has appealing features such as a high hydrogen capacity (13.9 wt%, water included), fast hydrogen evolution rate, and mild reaction conditions. The large-scale application of LiBH 4 , however, is restricted by its difficult regeneration from stable hydrolytic products (LiBO 2 · x H 2 O), which requires expensive reducing agents such as MgH 2 , high energy-consuming dehydration process for LiBO 2 ·2H 2 O, and additional hydrogen input. Herein, we develop a facile method to directly regenerate LiBH 4 from LiBO 2 ·2H 2 O by ball milling with low-cost Al-rich alloys as reductants and Li 2 O as additives, balancing efficiency and economy well. Introducing Mg (or Ca) into Al to form Al-rich alloys optimizes the mechanical brittleness and chemical reducibility, which facilitate the crushing, collision, and reaction of reactants and the conversion of H + to H − . The specific mechanism study illustrates that Mg in Al 3 Mg 2 preferentially reacts and the in-situ derived Al with fresh surface and fine size is highly active for reductive regeneration of LiBH 4 . Besides, a little addition of Li 2 O suppresses the formation of “boron sink”, [B 12 H 12 ] − , further increasing the yield of LiBH 4 . This work evidences the regeneration potential of Al-based reducing agents on metal borohydrides.

Anode material is critical for zinc electrowinning, and the selection and preparation of electrode materials are a focal point in hydrometallurgical research. In the present work, an Al/TiB 2 -Ti 4 O 7 /PbO 2 composite anode was fabricated through a combination of plasma spraying and electrodeposition. The morphology and structure of the TiB 2 -Ti 4 O 7 middle layer and PbO 2 active layer were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. Linear sweep voltammetry, Tafel polarization curves, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to analyze the catalytic activity and corrosion resistance of the composite anode. COMSOL Multiphysics software was used to simulate the electric field distribution of each element in the electrowinning cell. The results demonstrated that a dense and uniform layered structure, along with robust interfacial bonding, was essential for minimizing the interface resistivity and enhancing the corrosion resistance of the Al/TiB 2 -Ti 4 O 7 matrix. The coating optimized at a current of 630 A exhibited superior conductivity and corrosion resistance, with excellent conductivity and current uniformity reducing the internal transmission resistance. In addition, it was observed that a low current density was not favorable for grain nucleation and deposition, whereas a high current density led to structural looseness and high inner stress. The electrochemical behavior of the Al/TiB 2 -Ti 4 O 7 /PbO 2 composite anode was better than that of the Pb-Ag anode, offering lower cell voltage, higher current efficiency, and lower power consumption under identical zinc electrowinning conditions. The electric field analysis indicated that the composite anode provided a more uniform distribution of electric flux line and current density, more negative cathodic overpotential, and a higher zinc deposition rate than the Pb-Ag anode. In industry, it is highly desired to prepare Al-rich hierarchical zeolites by conventional alkali treatment without the use of costly chemical and special process. Here we provide an alternative strategy in which crystal defects are employed as mesopore directing agents. The effective elimination of the intracrystalline defects induces the generation of mesoporous structure in the alkali treatment process. Thus, the limitation originating from the framework Si/Al ratio of parent zeolite is circumvented. This strategy holds all merits of the conventional alkali treatment approach, which is industrially unfavorable. As an example, the Al-rich hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites with very low Si/Al ratios were successfully prepared. The obtained Al-rich hierarchical zeolites were characterized by XRD, XRF, SEM, TEM, N 2 adsorption-desorption, in-situ IR, MAS NMR and NH 3 -TPD. The results showed that Si/Al ratios of the prepared hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites were around 10 and the increases of external surface area and mesoporous volume were up to 2.6 and 3.7 times respectively in comparison with parent zeolite. Moreover, the constructed mesopores were interconnected open channels. In the catalytic cracking of 1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene, the Al-rich hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites exhibited an excellent performance because of the improved diffusion of reactant and product.

Immobilizing the activator on the carrier is an effective strategy to solve the difficult recovery and secondary pollution of activator in advanced oxidation process. In this study, cobalt–aluminum-layered double hydroxide (activator) was immobilized on a PU membrane carrier (Co–Al-LDH@PU membrane) by a hydrothermal in situ growth technique to form a recyclable peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator. The as-prepared Co–Al-LDH@PU membrane exhibited an excellent ability to activate PMS for the removal of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). 97.20% of TC (30 mg L −1 ) was eliminated with Co–Al-LDH@PU membrane (3 × 3 cm 2 ) and 1.6 mM PMS at pH 5.5 in 30 min. Singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was verified as dominant reactive oxygen species responsible for TC removal via quenching tests. Mechanism investigation suggested that the redox cycle of Co 2+ /Co 3+ on the surface of Co–Al-LDH@PU membrane was crucial for PMS activation. Meanwhile, Co–Al-LDH@PU membrane displayed the ideal reusability and versatility.
