Chiral electrokinetic chromatography using dual pseudo-stationary phases: SBE-β-CD with hydrophobic (deep) eutectic solvents versus micelles and ionic liquids

Song Xue,Yu Xu,Sihui Ding,Haoxiang Meng,Xiaodong Sun,Qi Zhang

Two hydrophobic (deep) eutectic solvents (H(D)ESs), menthol:octanoic acid (Men:OctA) and menthol:trioctylphosphine oxide (Men:TOPO), were prepared, characterized, and then employed for the first time in combination with sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin (SBE-β-CD) for chiral separations in capillary electrokinetic chromatography (EKC). The “H(D)ES + SBE-β-CD” dual pseudo-stationary phase (PSP) systems yielded not only enhanced enantioselectivities, but also accelerated migrations of primaquine and chlorpheniramine, two drugs that cannot be resolved using the single SBE-β-CD system. The enhancement originated from the combined effects of stereoselective complexation and hydrophobic partitioning involving the H(D)ES phase, which moved faster than the anionic CD phase under the separation conditions. The best results in terms of enantioresolution and migration time were obtained using a 20 mM phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) containing 2.0 % SBE-β-CD and 0.2 % Men:OctA at an applied voltage of 15 kV. We further compared the chiral EKC performance of the H(D)ESs with a series of conventional PSPs, including three micelles (Tween-20, Brij-35, SDS) and three ionic liquids (ILs). The results showed that none of these modifiers could achieve comparable EKC performance, suggesting that in certain cases, H(D)ESs could be a superior alternative to traditional modifiers for chiral EKC separations.

Oxygen vacancies and CDs synergistically mediated CD/TiO2 composite materials: investigation of electronic energy band structure modulation, photocatalytic performances, and mechanisms

Dahui Feng,Han Zhao,Yanhua Song,Ruyan Xie,Xiaozhen Zhang,Shuzhe Zhang,Peng Chen,Haifeng Zou

Visible light-driven carbon dot/defect titanium dioxide (CDT) nanocomposites were synthesized utilizing a straightforward solvothermal in conjunction with a wet chemical method. The CDT demonstrated a markedly enhanced capability for dye degradation under visible light, achieving a catalytic activity of up to 0.2485 min−1 for a 20 mg L−1 rhodamine B (RhB) solution, which is 21.6 times greater than that of commercial TiO2 (P25). The observed enhancement in visible light photocatalytic activity is attributed to the synergistic effects of oxygen vacancies and carbon dots (CDs), which synergistically improved the CDT's response to visible light and mitigated charge carrier recombination. The defects induced by oxygen vacancies function as electron capture centers, optimizing the bandgap structure and effectively facilitating the separation of electrons and holes. Meanwhile, the loading of CDs effectively modulated the concentration of oxygen vacancies, significantly enhancing the carrier separation efficiency and migration rate of the composites. Moreover, under various environmental conditions and across multiple cycles, the material consistently exhibited commendable degradation efficiency, high catalytic activity, cycling stability, and robust resistance to environmental interference in the degradation of RhB. Notably, free radical capture experiments indicated that the primary active species in the photodegradation process transitioned from superoxide radicals (˙O2−) and hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) to superoxide radicals (˙O2−) and holes (h+), thereby confirming the existence of a type II heterojunction at the interface between the CDs and TiO2, and proposing a plausible photocatalytic mechanism. This study presents an effective, environmentally friendly, and convenient methodology for the preparation of efficient photocatalytic composites characterized by defects and heterojunctions, thereby significantly advancing the research and application of catalysts for the removal of recalcitrant organic pollutants under visible light.

Individual and Simultaneous Voltammetric Determination of Cd(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) Applying Amino Functionalized Fe3O4@Carbon Microspheres Modified Electrode

Fan Bai,Xinhao Zhang,Xinmei Hou,Huijuan Liu,Junhong Chen,Tao Yang

Amino-functionalized Fe 3 O 4 @carbon microspheres (NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C) were prepared and the electrochemical sensor was constructed using NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C modified glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) to determine toxic heavy metals in aqueous solution. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to characterize the structure and phase of NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results indicate that NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C modified GCE possesses large active area and excellent electron transfer. Under optimized electrochemical condition, Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II) were determined using NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C modified GCE. The electrode through amino functionalization exhibits higher sensitivity and lower detection limit toward Cd(II) and Cu(II) due to the acid-base pairing interaction between the electron-rich −NH 2 ligand and the electron-deficient heavy metal ions. Compared with other similar results reported in the literature, the NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C modified electrode exhibits wider linear response range while with comparable lower detection limit. It also exhibits excellent stability, reproducibility and anti-interference ability.

A novel ratiometric electrochemical aptasensor based on βcyclodextrinylated graphene and Fc/β-CD host-guest recognition for ultrasensitive detection of Zearalenone

Yao Tian,Mengsi Liang,Yongdong Wei,Yuxin Wang,Ning-Bo Li,Yaoyong Wang

Zearalenone (ZEN) is a carcinogenic mycotoxin commonly found in grains, cereals, and dairy products, posing cancer risks to humans and animals. Chronic high-dose ZEN exposure can cause liver disease, immunosuppression, kidney damage, and tumorigenesis. Sensitive and efficient ZEN detection is therefore essential for protecting human and animal health. To meet the need for sensitive, selective, and low-cost mycotoxin sensors in real food samples, we developed a novel ratiometric electrochemical aptamer sensor for ZEN detection. The sensor design utilizes β-cyclodextrin-functionalized graphene (CG) to effectively enhance electron transfer efficiency, combined with host–guest recognition between ferrocene (Fc) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), as well as Au-S covalent bonding. The 5′-SH and 3′-MB-modified dual-labeled ZEN aptamer (MB-Apt-SH) was immobilized via β-CD/Fc inclusion, with signal amplified by AuNPs binding to -SH. Without ZEN, the aptamer stays on the electrode, giving high IMB and low IFc. With ZEN, it binds the target, pulling it away. Adding Fc-COOH fills the β-CD cavities, increasing IFc and decreasing IMB, thus raising the IFc/IMB ratio proportionally to ZEN concentration. The sensor exhibits a wide linear range from 1 pg/mL to 1000 ng/mL, with a detection limit of 0.4344 pg/mL. Furthermore, the method was successfully applied to the determination of ZEN in wine samples, yielding recovery rates between 94.00% and 104.60%, demonstrating excellent accuracy and applicability. These results indicate that the MCH/AuNPs/SH-Apt-MB/CG/GCE platform is a highly sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor for ZEN detection.

Thiol-grafted magnetic polymer for preconcentration of Cd, Hg, Pb from environmental water followed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry detection

Yujie Chen,Man He,Beibei Chen,Bin Hu

A novel thiol-grafted magnetic polymer (MPPs-SH) was synthesized by “click reaction” between 1,2-ethanedithiol and Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @poly (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate -co- glycidyl methacrylate). The resultant MPPs-SH had high S content (5.4 wt%) and exhibited large specific surface area (156.8 m 2  g −1 ) as well as high adsorption capacity of 254, 64.2, 56.6 mg g −1 for mercury, cadmium and lead ions , respectively. With the prepared MPPs-SH as sorbent , a method of magnetic solid phase extraction combined with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was developed for the quantification of trace mercury, cadmium and lead in environmental water samples. The extraction conditions including sample pH, sample volume, sorbent amount, adsorption/desorption time and elution volume were optimized. Under the optimal conditions, three heavy metal ions were extracted from 150 mL aqueous solution in 10 min and eluted by 0.2 mol L −1 HNO 3 containing 2% thiourea in 5 min. The method presented low limits of detection (0.21, 0.82 and 2.9 ng L −1 ) for target ions. The accuracy of the method was validated by using Certified Reference Materials of Environmental Water including GSB 07–1185–2000 (201435), GSB 07–1183–2000 (201239) and GSB 07–3173–2014 (202046). The application potential was further validated by the determination of trace mercury, cadmium and lead in Yangtze river and East lake water samples. The content of target heavy metal ions in tested water sample was found to be in the range of 6.40–195 ng L −1 , and the recoveries of 86.4–109% were obtained at three spiking concentration levels for mercury, cadmium and lead ions.

Conversion mechanism of pyrolysis humic substances of cotton stalks and carbide slag and its excellent repair performance in Cd-contaminated soil

Hao Zhou,Yan Dang,Chao Li,Xinyu Chen,Yongqi Liu,Haohao Bian,Andrei Ivanets,Jiliang Zheng,Xiaoyan He,José María García-Mina,Xintai Su

Unlike traditional biomass composting humification, pyrolysis humification can rapidly convert waste biomass into humic substances (HSs) at lower temperatures and in an alkaline environment for soil remediation. This study utilized the strong alkaline solid waste carbide slag (CARBIDE) and cotton stalk (CS) for pyrolysis humification. The pyrolysis humification mechanism and effect of CARBIDE and CS were investigated using FT-IR, NMR, and Py-GC/MS. Furthermore, the ability of HSs to remediate cadmium-contaminated soil (Cd-soil) was assessed through soil property analysis, pot tests, and microbial diversity studies. The results showed that humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) had the highest yield of 19 % and 5 %, respectively, among the humic substances (HS-CS&CA) produced under the conditions of 250 ℃, reaction time of 2 h and mass ratio of CS to CARBIDE of 5: 1. At 250 ℃, CARBIDE changed the heat transfer mechanism of biomass, promoted the decomposition of more hemicellulose and protein, promoted the Deamination, Ketonization and Maillard reaction, and synthesized more HAs. HS-CS&CA had a significant remediation effect on Cd-soil. The immobilization rate of Cd was as high as 23 %, and the accumulation of Cd in maize was reduced by 65 %. At the same time, the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Xanthomonadaceae and Bacillaceae for immobilizing Cd was increased, and the cycling effect of N and P was also enhanced. This study provides an innovative technical route for the rapid humification of CARBIDE and CS and its application in Cd-soil remediation.

Electrospun flexible core-sheath PAN/PU/β-CD@Ag nanofiber membrane decorated with ZnO: enhance the practical ability of semiconductor photocatalyst

Liu Suo,Wu Dingsheng,Hu Jinyan,Zhao Lingling,Zhao Lei,Yang Maohuan,Feng Quan

It is necessary to effectively separate photocatalytic materials from water bodies and reuse catalysts for industrial wastewater treatment. Herein, a novel nanofiber membrane with enhanced light absorption and reusability of photocatalytic materials was prepared. The three-dimensional porous structure of the nanofibers helps the photocatalyst efficiently degrade pollutants. Specifically, a high-efficiency photocatalyst carrier with a nanofiber structure (PAN/PU/β-CD@Ag nanofiber membrane) was prepared by electrospinning and a simple silver plating process, and then ZnO NPs were synthesized in situ on the nanofiber membrane during the hydrothermal process. Under visible-light irradiation, the ZnO-loaded PAN/PU/β-CD@Ag nanofiber membranes exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance for the degradation of methylene blue (MB, 71.5%) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH, 70.5%). Additionally, a possible pathway of charge migration in this system was proposed. This design may provide a new idea for the preparation of visible-light photocatalytic nanofiber membranes and their treatments of wastewater containing dyes and hormones.

Anchoring β-CD on simvastatin-loaded rHDL for selective cholesterol crystals dissolution and enhanced anti-inflammatory effects in macrophage/foam cells

Jianhua He,Xiaoju Zhou,Fengfei Xu,Hongliang He,Shuangyan Ma,Xinyue Liu,Mengyuan Zhang,Wenli Zhang,Jianping Liu

Macrophage/foam cells and cholesterol crystals (CCs) have been regarded as the central triggers of maladaptive inflammation in atherosclerotic plaque. Despite the tremendous progress of recombinant high-density lipoprotein (rHDL) serving for targeted drug delivery to alleviate inflammation in macrophage/foam cells, the active attempt to modulate/improve its CCs dissolution capacity remains poorly explored. The untreated CCs can seriously aggravate inflammation and threaten plaque stability. Based on the superb ability of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) to bind CCs and promote cholesterol efflux, simvastatin-loaded discoidal-rHDL (ST-d-rHDL) anchored with β-CD (βCD-ST-d-rHDL) was constructed. We verified that βCD-ST-d-rHDL specifically bound and dissolved CCs extracellularly and intracellularly. Furthermore, anchoring β-CD onto the surface of ST-d-rHDL enhanced its cholesterol removal ability in RAW 264.7 cell-derived foam cells characterized by accelerated cholesterol efflux, reduced intracellular lipid deposition, and improved cell membrane fluidity/permeability. Finally, βCD-ST-d-rHDL exerted efficient drug delivery and effective anti-inflammatory effects in macrophage/foam cells. Collectively, anchoring β-CD onto the surface of ST-d-rHDL for selective CCs dissolution, accelerated cholesterol efflux, and improved drug delivery represents an effective strategy to enhance anti-inflammatory effects for the therapy of atherosclerosis.

Preparation and physicochemical effects of zein nanofiber membrane encapsulated with citral/HP-β-CD inclusion complex and its application on cheese

Chen Shen,Wenqing Chen,Changzhu Li,Yong Ye,Haiying Cui,Lin Lin

As a nutritious cold chain food , cheese is susceptible to Listeria monocytogenes contamination. In order to prevent and control Listeria monocytogenes in cheese safely and efficiently, maintain the sensory quality during sale, this paper developed a novel nanofiber membrane with good mechanical strength, hydrophobicity , thermal stability , release performance and bacteriostatic performance as food active packaging. In this study, zein was introduced and electrospun to form a reliable carrier to embed and deliver citral in the cavity of HP-β-CD (Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin). We found that the zein-based nanofiber membranes showed preferable tensile properties and hydrophobicity with 4% (w:v) addition of citral/HP-β-CD inclusion complex. Meanwhile, the thermal stability and release property of citral were significantly improved by embedding in HP-β-CD and loading into zein-base nanofiber membranes. Moreover, after packaged by Zein nanofiber membrane encapsulated with citral/HP-β-CD inclusion complex under the storage conditions of 4 °C and 12 °C, the growth of Listeria monocytogenes in four kinds of cheeses was inhibited to a certain degree. The texture and sensory quality of the four cheeses at the two temperatures and the color quality under the low temperature condition of 4 °C did not change significantly. In summary, Zein nanofiber membranes encapsulated with citral/HP-β-CD inclusion complex has potential application prospects in the field of food active packaging.

Growth of MSe semiconductor nanowires on metal substrates through an Ag2Se-catalyzed solution–solid–solid mechanism (M = Zn, Cd and Mn)

Huimin Wang,Tingting Wang,Zibin Huang,Yizhuo Liu,Dehui Leng,Junli Wang

The growth of metal chalcogenide nanowires (NWs) on metal substrates is challenging work since the direct reactions taking place between the chalcogen (S, Se or Te) and zero-valent metal (M0) are frequently unable to regulate the crystallization of nanocrystals in an anisotropic one-dimensional (1D) manner. We here report the use of Ag2Se seeds as catalyst particles to realize the growth of metal selenide (MSe) NWs on their respective metal foil or flakes, including ZnSe/Zn, CdSe/Cd, and MnSe/Mn material systems. Metal foil or flakes (M = Zn, Cd and Mn) serve as a support substrate as well as a metal cation source during the NW synthesis. The preformed Ag2Se seeds play the roles of not only catalytic particles that initiate a so-called solution–solid–solid process to produce crystalline MSe NWs on metal substrates, but also inert impurities that promote an electrochemical anodic reaction of the metal to supply metal cations (M0 − 2e → M2+) for the NW formation. The microstructural studies by HRTEM reveal the polytypism and particularly the diameter-dependence of crystal phases and growth directions in the resulting MSe NWs, which can be rationalized from the viewpoints of the energetics and the catalyst/NW interfacial structures. These semiconductor NWs grown on metal foil or flakes may find wide use in photoelectric catalysis and devices without a transfer process of free-standing NWs onto a conductive support substrate.

Phosphate modified hydrochars produced via phytic acid-assisted hydrothermal carbonization for efficient removal of U(VI), Pb(II) and Cd(II)

Xin Zhao,Meng Li,Fuqiang Zhai,Yanling Hou,Rui Hu

Phosphate species can complex with nuclides and heavy metals from aqueous solutions strongly. The introduction of phosphate groups onto the surface of biochar sorbents (mostly <1.0 at.% of P) is highly desired. In this study, phosphate modified hydrochars (HTBs) were prepared through the hydrothermal carbonization of bamboo sawdust with various duration (2, 12, 24 h) in the presence of phytic acid (0–70 wt%). The results showed that the addition of PA with a low concentration of 10 wt% carbonized at 2 h generated hydrogen protons to etch the pristine sawdust, inducing the granulation of surfaces and a 5.5-fold enhancement of surface area. While HTBs carbonized with increasing PA concentrations (30–70 wt%) and longer duration (12 and 24 h) presented more carbonaceous particles with rising sizes from <100 nm to 2.5 μm, which should be due to the cross-linkage of dehydrated phosphate-containing organic carbon components to the matrix, enabling the resultful surface modification (maximum of 2.1 wt% of P). The uptake of U(VI), Pb(II) and Cd(II) on HTBs was investigated given various geochemical conditions including contact time, pH, ionic strength , humic acid and temperature. HTBs could capture U(VI), Pb(II) and Cd(II) efficiently from the ideal and simulated wastewaters, and be reused well after six recycles. This work opened a new strategy for the potential of phosphate-hydrochars in the aqueous remediation.

Carboxymethylcellulose-chitosan film modified magnetic alkaline Ca-bentonite for the efficient removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solution

Wang Yingya,Zhang Hanbing,Yaseen Muhammad,Tong Zhangfa,Chen Ninghua,Shi Huazhen

In order to endow alkaline Ca-bentonite (ACB) with magnetic separation ability, simultaneously obtain better magnetic stability and stronger removal capacity of heavy metal cations; magnetic alkaline Ca-bentonite/carboxymethylcellulose-chitosan film (MACB/C-C) was prepared by organic modification of magnetic alkaline Ca-bentonite (MACB) using non-toxic carboxymethylcellulose and chitosan. Textural characterization results revealed that magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were successfully immobilized on ACB and modified with C-C. The functionalized layer of C-C concurrently enhanced the stability of Fe 3 O 4 and removal performances of heavy metal cations. Adsorption results indicated that MACB/C-C exhibited thorough separation from aqueous solution and greater uptake ability for Pb(II) and Cd(II) (483 mg·g −1 and 123 mg·g −1 ) than the nascent MACB (335 mg·g −1 and 76 mg·g −1 ), respectively, at pH 5 and 25 °C temperature. The adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) on MACB/C-C mainly occurred via surface precipitation and complexation when pH > 2. MACB/C-C could be efficiently recycled with marginal decrease in adsorption capacity. The current approach credited to the convenient operation, simplified synthesis, and high efficiency of MACB/C-C could be deemed as a promising alternative for the removal of heavy metal cations from wastewater.
