Microwave-assisted synthesis of pectin-stabilised CdS/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals and enhanced photocatalytic performance

Dezhi Qin,Guangrui Yang,Yabo Wang,Jiajia Zhang,Li Zhang

Pectin-conjugated CdS/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals were prepared by using a microwave-assisted approach without the addition of any external ligands. The prepared cubic phase CdS/ZnS nanocrystals were uniform and mono-dispersed with sizes of 6–9 nm. The charge and long-chain structure of pectin molecules effectively prevented the aggregation of CdS/ZnS nanocrystals. In addition, pectin molecules have multiple functional groups, such as O–H, C=O, and COO − , which could conjugate with the surface of samples to control the growth of CdS/ZnS nanocrystals. Thermogravimetric analysis provided evidence that the obtained products are inorganic–organic hybrid materials. Based on the analysis of ultraviolet–visible spectra, it was found that the formation of ZnS shell led to a red-shift and an enhancement of absorption of CdS/ZnS nanocrystals compared with that of CdS. Photocatalytic activity of CdS/ZnS nanocrystals was monitored by the degradation of Rhodamine B under visible light irradiation. The presence of ZnS shell inhibited photo-corrosion and photo-dissolution of CdS nanocatalyst, thus resulting in a significant enhancement of photocatalytic activity and stability.

In situ construction of BiVO4(-)cellulose fibers@CDs(-)polyvinyl alcohol composites for tetracycline photocatalytic degradation

Wang Tao,Liu XiQing,Ma ChangChang,Wei MaoBin,Huo PengWei,Yan YongSheng

Non-biodegradable and toxic photocatalysts pose as secondary threats to the environmental security. In this work, non-toxic biocomposites were prepared using natural bamboo cellulose fibers (CF), polyvinyl alcohols (PVAs), BiVO 4 , and carbon dots (CDs) from biomaterials. Thereafter, their optical properties, chemical characterizations, and photocatalytic performances were evaluated. The novel BiVO 4 (-)CF@CDs(-)PVA composites were prepared via the combined implementation of in situ and impregnation methods. The optical properties revealed that the CDs and fibers increased the range and intensity of light absorption. The PVAs were used as the shield and dispersant to enhance stability because they have numerous chemical groups. In view of the various possible paths of electron migration, the enhanced photocatalytic activity of BiVO 4 (-)CF@CDs(-)PVA composites for tetracycline degradation was observed under visible light illumination. The origins of the structure, morphology, and optical mechanism in the enhancement of the photocatalytic ability of BiVO 4 (-)CF@CDs(-)PVA composites were discussed and demonstrated.

Construction of Z-Scheme CdS/WO3 Heterostructure on Photonic Crystals with High-Efficiency Photocatalysis Performance

Chen Mengshi,Xiao Ye

Tungsten oxide (WO 3 ) has been widely used as a photocatalyst for its suitable bandgap and relative stability. However, the high recombination rate of photo-generated carriers impedes raising the photocatalytic efficiency of tungsten oxide (WO 3 ) beyond its current value. In this work, a cadmium sulfide (CdS) and tungsten oxide (WO 3 ) Z-scheme heterostructure system was constructed which shows improved photocatalytic performance due to better hole-electron separation. In addition, photonic crystal fluorine-doped SnO 2 (FTO) was applied to the photoanode as a supporting framework for CdS and WO 3 , which can also play a role in assisting photocatalytic materials to assimilate light at the same time. As a result, the overall photocatalytic performance of a Z-scheme system on a photonic crystal framework has been significantly increased beyond that of conventional tungsten oxide.

Electrochemiluminescence immunoassay for the prostate-specific antigen by using a CdS/chitosan/g-C3N4 nanocomposite

Huang Bo,Liu Xing-Pei,Chen Jing-Shuai,Mao Chang-jie,Niu He-Lin,Jin Bao-Kang

An electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor was fabricated for the evaluation of prostate specific antigen (PSA). The sensor was developed by successively modifying glassy carbon electrode (GCE) electrodes with CdS/Chito/g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposites and DNA1 was labeled at the 5′ end with thiol. The aptamer DNA was labeled at the 3′ end with a quencher ferrocene (Fc) was ligated to DNA1 by the principle of complementary base pairing. In the absence of PSA, the ECL intensity signal is effectively quenches through the energy transfer and photoexcitation electron transfer between CdS/Chito/g-C 3 N 4 emitter and quencher Fc. After incubation with target PSA, the aptamer DNA interacts with PSA and then moved away from the electrode surface together, which will recover the ECL intensity. Under the optimal conditions, the ECL intensity increases linearly with the logarithm of PSA concentration in the range of 1 pg·mL −1 to 100 ng·mL −1 , and the detection limit is 0.14 pg·mL −1 (S/ N  = 3). The biosensor has been successfully applied to the determination of PSA in serum sample. Schematic representation of the electrochemiluminescence sensor based on a CdS/chitosan/g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposite, which can be applied to the determination of prostate specific antigen in serum.

Synthesis of high-efficient g-C3N4/polydopamine/CdS nanophotocatalyst based on bioinspired adhesion and chelation

Dong Yang,Wenjing Wang,Xuyang Zhao,Zhiyuan Zhou,Hanjie Ren,Yao Chen,Zhanfeng Zhao,Ke An,Zhongyi Jiang

By utilizing the bioinspired adhesion and metal chelation of polydopamine (PDA), a kind of ternary nanocomposites that consist of the graphitic carbon nitride nanosheet (CNNS), PDA layer and cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanocrystals were synthesized. In the resultant CNNS/PDA/CdS nanocomposites, CdS nanocrystals about 5−10 nm in diameter are scattered on the CNNS surface in the presence of the PDA layer. Due to the energy band matching, CNNS constructs a type II heterostructure with CdS nanoparticles via the mediation of the electroconductive PDA layer, thus enhancing the photocatalytic activity. Compared with pristine CdS and CNNS, the CNNS/PDA/CdS nanocomposite conspicuously shows superior photocatalytic performance under visible light above 420 nm, which can degrade 97 % Rhodamine B (RhB) molecules within 80 min. The introduction of a PDA layer between CNNS and CdS not only promotes the photon energy absorption but also facilitates the separation of photoinduced electron-hole pairs.

Synthesis of EDTA-bridged CdS/g-C3N4 heterostructure photocatalyst with enhanced performance for photoredox reactions

Yi Xiao,Ting Wang,Ganhua Qiu,Kun Zhang,Changguo Xue,Benxia Li

Photocatalytic reactions represent a kind of green and sustainable chemical processes for organic transformations, but the efficiency is limited by the severe recombination and/or inadequate redox potentials of photoinduced charge carriers in photocatalysts . To address these issues, herein, the CdS-EDTA/g-C 3 N 4 heterostructures were designed according to Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism and synthesized by the hydrothermal growth of CdS on g-C 3 N 4 nanoflakes with assistance of EDTA chelating agent. EDTA played multiple roles in the formation of CdS-EDTA/g-C 3 N 4 heterostructure photocatalysts, such as controlling the morphology of CdS nanostructures , linking CdS and g-C 3 N 4 together, and boosting the charge transfer between two semiconductors. The optimized CdS-EDTA/g-C 3 N 4 (10%) photocatalyst exhibited much higher activities toward the selective reduction of nitrophenol and the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol , than those of CdS/g-C 3 N 4 heterostructures without EDTA. The enhanced photocatalysis of CdS-EDTA/g-C 3 N 4 can be ascribed to the efficient separation and suitable photoredox potentials of photoexcited charge carriers in the EDTA-bridged Z-scheme system. This work provides the inspiration for exploring inexpensive organic electron mediators for constructing all-solid-state Z-scheme photocatalysts and demonstrates the enhanced performance of Z-scheme photocatalysts for photoredox reactions of organic transformations.

1D hierarchical CdS NPs/NiO NFs heterostructures with enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation

Chonghai Deng,Hanmei Hu,Hong Yu,Man Wang,Mengyi Ci,Lili Wang,Sane Zhu,Yiping Wu,Huirong Le

One-dimensional (1D) hierarchically structured CdS nanoparticles (NPs)/NiO nanofibers (NFs) heterostructures with remarkable removal efficiency for diazo dye Congo red (CR) were fabricated by a stepwise synthesis process, which was involved a chemical bathing deposition combined with calcination, and a microwave-assisted wet chemical reaction. The crystal phases, morphologies, optical absorption properties, and adsorption/photocatalytic activity of as-prepared products were investigated by XRD, FESEM, TEM, high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), N 2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and photoluminescence (PL) spectrum respectively. The experimental results indicated that binary satellite- core CdS NPs/NiO NFs heterojunctions are comprised of n-type CdS NPs with size of 10–30 nm decorated onto 1D p-type NiO NFs with diameter of 60–180 nm and length up to microns, which are self-assembled by nanoparticles with 30–100 nm in size. The possible formation mechanism for satellite-core structured CdS/NiO heterojunction is proposed. Interestingly, the decolorization efficiency over CdS/NiO heterostructures reached up to 91.2% in removal of aqueous CR at high concentration within 40 min under visible light irradiation, which was approximately 5.2 and 3.8 times as high as that of pure CdS nanocrystals (NCs) and the mixture of NiO NFs and CdS NCs. Furthermore, the possible photocatalytic mechanism was also investigated. The as-designed hybrid CdS NPs/NiO NFs heterostructures exhibited improved photocatalytic activity, which is attributed to the enhancement of the visible light adsorption, the efficient separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, and the high adsorption capacity towards CR molecules, thereby displaying superior visible- light-driven photodegradation of CR in high concentration. This work may provide a green engineering heterojunction technology to develop the advanced multifunctional nanocomposites for their applications in wastewater purification.

Sulfur Vacancy-Rich O-Doped 1T-MoS2 Nanosheets for Exceptional Photocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation over CdS

Benteng Sun,Zhangqian Liang,Yeye Qian,Xuesong Xu,Ye Han,Jian Tian

Here, we reported that sulfur vacancy-rich O-doped 1T-MoS2 nanosheets (denoted as SV-1T-MoS2) can surpass the activity of Pt as cocatalysts to assist in the photocatalytic nitrogen fixation of CdS nanorods. SV-1T-MoS2 cocatalysts exhibit sulfur vacancies, O-doping, more metallic 1T phase, and high electronic conductivity, thus leading to the exposure of more active edge sites, high Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area, enhanced visible light absorption, and improved electron separation and transfer, which are beneficial for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation. Consequently, the optimized 30 wt % SV-1T-MoS2-/CdS composites exhibit an outstanding nitrogen fixation rate of 8220.83 μmol L–1 h–1 g–1 and long-term stability under simulated solar light irradiation, significantly higher than pure CdS nanorods, CdS–Pt (0.1 wt %), and 30 wt % 1T-MoS2/CdS composites. The catalytic mechanism of photocatalytic nitrogen fixation on SV-1T-MoS2 is discussed by density functional theory calculations.

A fluorescence turn-on CDs-AgNPs composites for highly sensitive and selective detection of Hg2+

Kaiyu Zhang,Yuxin Sang,Yingdi Gao,Qinxing Sun,Weina Li

In this paper, a simple and effective fluorescence turn-on approach for highly sensitive and selective monitoring Hg 2+ ions was designed by using carbon dots (CDs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). It reveals that the fluorescence of CDs solution can be quenched in the presence of AgNPs through inner filter effect (IFE) and the quenched CDs-AgNPs system is turned on after addition of Hg 2+ ions, which is due to higher affinity of Hg 2+ and AgNPs than that of CDs and AgNPs, thus resulting the disappearance of AgNPs from the CDs-AgNPs composites and leading to the fluorescence turn-on of CDs. The developed fluorescence turn-on approach exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity for detection of Hg 2+ . Under the optimum experimental conditions, good linearity was achieved over the range of 100–160 μM and the limit of detection (LOD) was estimated to be 2.22×10 -8 M for Hg 2+ . The recoveries of Hg 2+ spiked in real samples ranged from 98.4% to 101.6%. Results of this study suggest that the fluorescence turn-on approach can be used to the detection of Hg 2+ in real water samples.

CDs–MnO2–TPPS Ternary System for Ratiometric Fluorescence Detection of Ascorbic Acid and Alkaline Phosphatase

Hongzhi Lu,Shoufang Xu

Manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanosheet-based fluorescence sensors often use oxidase-like activity or wide absorption spectrum for detection of antioxidants. In those strategies, MnO2 nanosheets were reduced to Mn2+ by antioxidants. However, few strategies emphasize the role of Mn2+ obtained from MnO2 reduction in the design of the fluorescence sensor. Herein, we expanded the application of a MnO2 nanosheet-based fluorescence sensor by involving Mn2+ in the detection process using ascorbic acid (AA) as a model target. In this strategy, carbon dots (CDs), MnO2 nanosheets, and tetraphenylporphyrin tetrasulfonic acid (TPPS) comprise a ternary system for ratiometric fluorescence detection of AA. Initially, CDs were quenched by MnO2 nanosheets based on the inner filter effect, while TPPS maintained its fluorescence intensity. After the addition of AA, MnO2 nanosheets were reduced to Mn2+ so that the fluorescence intensity of CDs was recovered and TTPS was quenched by coordination with Mn2+. Overall, AA triggered an emission intensity increase at 440 nm for CDs and a decrease at 640 nm for TPPS. The ratio intensity of CDs to TPPS (F440/F640) showed a good linear relationship from 0.5 to 40 μM, with a low detection limit of 0.13 μM for AA detection. By means of the alkaline phosphatase (ALP)-triggered generation of AA, this strategy can be applied for the detection of ALP in the range of 0.1–100 mU/mL, with a detection limit of 0.04 mU/mL. Furthermore, this sensor was applied to detect AA and ALP in real, complex samples with ideal recovery. This novel platform extended the application of MnO2 nanosheet-based fluorescence sensors.

Performance and mechanism of photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline by Z–scheme heterojunction of CdS@LDHs

Tiantian Dai,Ziying Yuan,Yue Meng,Bo Xie,Zheming Ni,Shengjie Xia

Z–scheme heterojunction has the advantages of high carrier separation efficiency and strong oxidation ability, which is a potential material for photodegradation . In this paper, CdS@Zn,Cr-layered double hydroxides (CdS@LDHs) Z–scheme heterojunction was synthesized and used for photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC). The effects of the amount of catalyst, pH value of the solution, initial concentration of TC, light intensity , and reaction temperature were studied. The degradation kinetics and mechanism were also discussed in detail. Under the optimal conditions (initial concentration of TC 50 mg/L, pH 9, light intensity 500 W, the amount of the catalyst 25 mg, and reaction temperature 45 °C), the highest removal percentage and the corresponding activity of CdS@LDHs was 93.04% and 37.09 mg g −1  h −1 , respectively. In addition, DFT calculation confirmed the existence of built–in electric field (BIEF) in the heterojunction, which promotes the electron transfer from CdS to LDHs. The amount of electron transfer was accelerated, and the recombination of electron and hole was obviously inhibited, so that they were more involved in oxidation and reduction. Thus, it makes CdS@LDHs heterojunction as a highly efficient catalyst for photodegradation of TC.

Hollow structured PtNix alloy as cocatalyst of CdS for hydrogen generation under visible light irradiation

Qianqian Ba,Xinjia Jia,Li Huang,Xiying Li,Li Gao,Liqun Mao

PtNi x hollow nanoparticles (HNPs) as a cocatalyst was synthesized by a galvanic replacement method at room temperature , and then was loaded on CdS. The hollow structure of PtNi x alloy was confirmed by TEM and STEM . Photocatalytic hydrogen production reaction was performed for PtNi x /CdS catalyst under 300 W Xe lamp (λ ≥ 420 nm). It is noteworthy that PtNi 0.5 /CdS shows the highest hydrogen evolution activity of 2.9 mmol/h with QE = 51.24% at 420 nm, which is higher than that of situ-photodeposited Pt onto CdS (0.57 mmol/h). The enhancement of hydrogen evolution performance of PtNi 0.5 /CdS could be attributed to the porous shell and hollow structure of PtNi 0.5 NPs, as well as the strong electronic coupling effect between Pt and Ni. Besides, the sheet structure of CdS in some degree promoted the hydrogen production rate. Therefore, the PtNi x HNPs could be a promising cocatalyst of CdS for solar driven hydrogen evolution.
