A robust and extendable sheath flow interface with minimal dead volume for coupling CE with ESI-MS

Pan Fang,Jian-Zhang Pan,Qun Fang

In this paper, we describe a robust sheath flow-based CE-MS interface with minimal interface dead volume based on an extended pattern. A 20   µm i.d. × 90   µm o.d. fused-silica capillary with a chemically-etched thin-wall tip (30   µm o.d.) was used as the separation capillary as well as electrospray emitter, and a 200   µm i.d. × 375   µm o.d. capillary with a tapered tip (40   µm o.d.) was used as the sheath flow capillary. An extendable sheath-flow interface mode was adopted by decreasing the thickness of separation capillary tip and extending the separation capillary tip out from the sheath flow capillary tip, and allowing the sheath flow to be transferred to the separation capillary tip along its outer surface, forming a surface sheath flow to mix with sample flow at the separation capillary tip. Such a strategy could significantly reduce the interface dead volume and thus improve the CE separation efficiency and detection sensitivity, as well as evidently enhance the working reliability of the CE-MS interface. We investigated various factors affecting the interface performance, including capillary extending distance, emitter diameters, sheath flow capillary shape , and sheath flow rate . Under the optimized conditions, a minimal interface dead volume of ca. 4   pL was obtained which is the smallest one compared with previously-reported sheath flow-based CE-MS interfaces. The feasibility and applicability of the present CE-MS interface were demonstrated in the separation of a peptide mixture with high separation efficiency of 2.07–3.38   µm plate heights and good repeatabilities (< 6.1% RSD, n = 5). We except such a simple and robust interface could provide a possible solution for the development of commercial CE-MS interfaces differing from the currently-used ones, and has the potentials to be applied in routine analytical laboratories for various studies such as proteomics, metabolomics, or single cell analysis.

Efficient NO reduction by CO on Cu/Ce co-modified CaO in calcium looping CO2 capture process

Yi Fang,Shoubing Chai,Zhiwei Chu,Zirui He,Yingjie Li

In the calcium looping CO 2 capture process, using CO in the flue gas to reduce NO at a high molar ratio of CO to NO (e.g., above 10:1) can achieve efficient removal of NO. However, the lots of unreacted CO causes secondary pollution. In this study, a novel Cu/Ce co-modified CaO was proposed for cyclic CO 2 capture and the catalytic NO reduction at a low CO:NO molar ratio (e.g., 2:1). The experimental findings indicate that Cu/Ce modification improves the performance of CaO in both catalytic NO reduction and carbonation. The Cu/Ce co-modified CaO contained the optimal Cu/Ce/Ca molar ratio of 1:5:100 possesses both NO removal and CO conversion efficiencies of above 99 %, along with CO 2 removal efficiency exceeding 88%. Microscopic analysis determines that the electron transfer between Cu and Ce facilitates the conversion of lattice oxygen into surface oxygen, mitigating the competition between CO 2 and CO for surface oxygen. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations demonstrate that CO/NO/CO 2 exhibits non-competitive adsorption behavior on Cu/Ce co-modified CaO. Consequently, Cu/Ce-modified CaO possesses superior catalysis for efficient NO reduction by CO at low CO:NO molar ratio in calcium looping process.

Cu,Ce-containing phosphotungstates as laccase-like nanozyme for colorimetric detection of Cr(VI) and Fe(Ⅲ)

Yi Gu,Yang Jiao,Ya Ruan,Jing Yang,Yaling Yang

Herein, a nanocomposite of Cu,Ce-containing phosphotungstates (Cu,Ce-PTs) with outstanding laccase-like activity was fabricated via a one-pot microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. Notably, it was discovered that both Fe 3+ and Cr 6+ could significantly enhance the electron transfer rates of Ce 3+ and Ce 4+ , along with generous Cu 2+ with high catalytic activity, thereby promoting the laccase-like activity of Cu,Ce-PTs. The proposed system can be used for the detection of Fe 3+ and Cr 6+ in a range of 0.667–333.33 μg/mL and 0.033–33.33 μg/mL with a low detection limit of 0.135 μg/mL and 0.0288 μg/mL, respectively. The proposed assay exhibits excellent reusability and selectivity and can be used in traditional Chinese medicine samples analysis.

A facile synthesis of a Ce-based MOF at room temperature for effective adsorption of methylene blue

Yang Zhou,Dan Wang,Qiuxiang Feng,Qi Wu,Feng Cao,Li Jiang,Qianli Zhang,Jie Liu

Synthesizing stable MOF materials with good adsorption capability in a relatively green way is well worth investigating. In this work, a stable Ce-UiO-66-NH2 MOF was constructed from Ce(IV) salts and a bifunctional ligand, 2-amino terephthalic acid, in a mixture of water and ethanol at room temperature. The MOF solid was fully characterized and its adsorption properties for methylene blue were investigated in detail. Ce-UiO-66-NH2 showed excellent removal ability of MB over a wide pH range, the adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the isothermal adsorption data fit well with a Langmuir model with a maximum capacity of 427 mg g−1. Moreover, a spontaneous heat adsorption process was concluded from thermodynamic study, and this MOF sorbent can be reused for several cycles with its structural stability maintained. A possible mechanism for MB adsorption was also proposed.

A novel Ce/Fe bimetallic metal-organic framework with ortho-dodecahedral multilevel structure for enhanced phosphate adsorption

Zunchang Gao,Yanqing Wei,Xin Tian,Yang Liu,Xin Lan,Dawei Zhang,Shuaiyuan Han,Pengfei Huo

The synthesis of novel Ce/Fe bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (Ce/FcDA/FA-MOFs) via an innovative hydrothermal method is reported. This method utilizes Ce as the central metal and 1,1′-ferrocene dicarboxylic acid (FcDA) and formic acid (FA) as ligands. Optimization of hydrothermal time, feed ratio, and the addition of FA yielded Ce/FcDA/FA-MOFs with ideal ortho -dodecahedral hierarchical configurations. Comprehensive characterization via FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDS, XPS, and N 2 adsorption/desorption analyses elucidated the influence of FA on morphology and chemical structure. Phosphate adsorption tests on Ce/FcDA/FA-MOFs revealed sustained strong selectivity and adsorption capacity, even in the presence of coexisting anions and variations in pH. Kinetic, thermodynamic, and isothermal simulations indicated spontaneous, efficient, and heat-absorbing phosphate adsorption properties on Ce/FcDA/FA-MOFs. Fitting parameters from the Langmuir adsorption model demonstrated a maximum adsorption capacity of up to 530.25 mg g −1 , attributed to physical/chemical adsorption during the reaction. Furthermore, investigation into the adsorption mechanism of Ce/FcDA/FA-MOFs on phosphate through FT-IR, XRD, and XPS analyses of the adsorbed samples revealed a complex process involving the electrostatic mutual attraction of outer-sphere entities and ligand exchange in the inner-sphere. This study advances our understanding of Ce/FcDA/FA-MOFs as effective adsorbents for phosphate and contributes to the development of environmentally sustainable materials with potential applications in water treatment.

A high-surface-area La-Ce-Mn mixed oxide with enhanced activity for CO and C3H8 oxidation

Baohuai Zhao,Rui Ran,Li Sun,Zesheng Yang,Xiaodong Wu,Duan Weng

A high-surface-area La-Ce-Mn mixed oxide was synthesized by citrate method, with further acid etching to dissolve the La 3   + ions in the lattice. The acid etching process efficiently improved the specific surface area, increased the ratios of Mn 4   + /Mn n   + , Ce 3   + /Ce n   + , O α /O tot , and enhanced the oxygen mobility of the catalyst, which were responsible for the superior catalytic performance. Compared to the pristine La 0.8 Ce 0.2 MnO 3   +   δ catalyst, the etched one could convert CO and C 3 H 8 more efficiently, with 90% conversion of CO and C 3 H 8 at only 73 and 196   °C, respectively. Such superior catalytic performance made it possible to be used for automotive emission control during cold-start period.

Synthesis and characterization of Au@Ag/Ce-UIO-66 nanocomposite for highly sensitive detection of sulfadiazine residue

Hao-Jia Qin,Shuai Zhao,Hua-Ping Gong,Zhi Yu,Yufeng Wang,De Zhang,Pei Liang

Antibiotic residue detection plays a key role in ensuring human health. However, rapid, reliable, and highly sensitive detection methods are still insufficient. To tackle this challenge, in this study, the Au@Ag/Ce-UIO-66, a nanocomposite material consisting of bimetallic gold core and silver shell (Au@Ag) introduced on the surface of Ce-UIO-66, was successfully synthesized. By meticulously regulating the exact concentration and volume of silver nitrate, we successfully generated an optimal matrix. This significantly enhanced the detection capability of the probe molecule CV to an impressive concentration of 10 −9 M, with a remarkably low relative standard deviation of 7.54 %. The matrix exhibits excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance and stability, reaching adsorption equilibrium within 30 min. Moreover, employing this substrate enables the detection of sulfadiazine at concentrations as minimal as 2.5 μg/L, significantly surpassing the standards set by the European Union. Notably, the Raman spectral signal of sulfadiazine maintains stability across various pH conditions at a concentration of 10 −5 M. Finally, the adsorption mechanism and enhancement mechanism between Au@Ag/Ce-UIO-66 and sulfadiazine were explored.

SO2-induced surface defects on monatomic Ce-doped MoTiOx catalyst for efficient reduction of NOx with NH3

Xinyu Han,Kaijie Liu,Mengyao Bian,Zhaoxu Yuan,Yannan Li,Yunlong Zhang,Xiangguang Yang,Yibo Zhang

Despite SO 2 being recognized as a catalyst poisoning substance, a trace amount can enhance the acidity of the NH 3 -SCR (selective catalytic reduction) catalyst, which facilitates NH 3 adsorption and accelerates the reaction rate according to the Eley-Rideal mechanism. In this study, monoatomically dispersed Ce atoms were doped into the MoTiO x lattice to regulate the quantity and distribution of sulfate. This regulation was achieved by leveraging the stronger affinity of SO 2 to Ce, thus maximizing the acidifying effect of SO 2 to boost the NH 3 -SCR performance of the catalyst. The catalyst demonstrated the ability to maintain over 80 % NO x conversion for at least 144 hours in the presence of high concentration SO 2 (250 ppm). A detailed examination of the surface dynamics after SO 2 introduction revealed that NH 4 (SO 4 ) 2 , formed on the surface, converted to NH 4 HSO 4 . The decomposition of NH 4 HSO 4 extracted lattice oxygen from the catalyst, leading to an increase in oxygen vacancies on the catalyst surface as the duration of SO 2 exposure increased. The surface-adsorbed oxygen, brought about by these oxygen vacancies, was readily activated, which promoted the dehydrogenation process of NH 3 and the progression of NH 3 -SCR. Further, based on the discovery of the unique phenomenon and mechanism of NH 4 HSO 4 decomposition that generates oxygen vacancies, gases containing poisonous SO 2 were utilized for the pretreatment of the catalyst to optimize its surface and enhance its sulfur resistance (fighting poison with poison). The results demonstrated that the pretreated catalyst rapidly achieved optimal NO x conversion and maintained catalytic stability for over 240 h even in the presence of 250 ppm SO 2 without any decrease in activity. This research innovatively leveraged the poisonous SO 2 to optimize the catalyst's surface, thereby achieving higher catalytic performance and sulfur resistance, which offers valuable insights into the design of novel sulfur-resistant catalysts.

Research on carbon black and cerium co-doped Ti4O7-CB-Ce electrocatalytic oxidation of tetracycline-based antibiotics

Chen Junxia,He Xinyi,Lei Chongtian,Li Weigang,Yang Zhenzhen,Zhou Qing

Elemental doping is a promising way for enhancing the electrocatalytic activity of metal oxides. Herein, we fabricate Ti/ Ti 4 O 7 -CB-Ce anode materials by the modification means of carbon black and cerium co-doped Ti 4 O 7 , and this shift effectively improves the interfacial charge transfer rate of Ti 4 O 7 and •OH yield in the electrocatalytic process. Remarkably, the Ti 4 O 7 -CB-Ce anode exhibits excellent efficiency of minocycline (MNC) wastewater treatment (100% removal within 20 min), and the removal rate reduces from 100 to 98.5% after five cycles, which is comparable to BDD electrode. •OH and 1 O 2 are identified as the active species in the reaction. Meanwhile, it is discovered that Ti/ Ti 4 O 7 -CB-Ce anodes can effectively improve the biochemical properties of the non-biodegradable pharmaceutical wastewater (B/C values from 0.25 to 0.44) and significantly reduce the toxicity of the wastewater (luminescent bacteria inhibition rate from 100 to 26.6%). This work paves an effective strategy for designing superior metal oxides electrocatalysts.

Using a new octahedron UiO-66(Ce) to enrich target molecules for highly sensitive detection of ziram

Fen Yang,Shuai Zhao,Biaobiao Ge,Jie Huang,Qianmin Dong,Qiang Chen,Shangzhong Jin,Pei Liang

We demonstrate a method for the detection of Ziram in water by using the adsorption properties of UiO-66(Ce) metal-organic framework (MOF) combined with the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate of precious metal nanoparticles. The traditional UiO-66 is based on Zr as the metal center. After replacing the Zr metal center with Ce, the synthesized UiO-66(Ce) has short aging, high efficiency, low energy consumption, and energy saving. Furthermore, by adding P123, UiO-66 is modified to have a structure similar to the durian shell spine, which can provide more composite sites for metal nanoparticles. Thus, more SERS hot spots are generated. The combination of AuNPs with UiO-66(Ce) has been confirmed by XRD, XPS, and other characterization and analysis techniques. The Raman probe molecule R6G was used as an evaluation tool to evaluate the performance of this SERS substrate. The results showed that the relative standard deviation (RSD) of the substrate was as low as 8.96 % at a concentration of 10 –6 M of the R6G solution, and the substrate demonstrated high stability. Finally, the substrate was applied for the detection of ziram in lake water, achieving a detection concentration of 10 –8 M, an enhancement factor of 2.57 × 10 5 , and a detection limit as low as 5.21 × 10 –9 M, demonstrating excellent sensitivity and enabling efficient trace pollutant detection in complex water environments.

Synergistic enhancement of carbon-based perovskite solar cells via Ce-MOF-derived interfacial layer and hot pressing

Zhenwu Zhong,Min Liu,Zhaoxiang Qi,Ying Wang,Wenjun Zhang,Yan Zhang,Ying Qi,Hongyu Mi,Jian Cheng,Shu Yin,Yahong Xie

This study presents a facile synthesis of cerium-based metal–organic frameworks (Ce-BTC) and their subsequent pyrolysis into nanorod-shaped CeO 2 -BTC for interfacial engineering in carbon-based perovskite solar cells (C-PSCs). The optimized FTO/SnO 2 /CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 /CeO 2 -BTC/Carbon architecture achieves a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.63%, representing a 31.09% enhancement over the baseline device. This improvement stems from multiple synergistic effects: CeO 2 -BTC demonstrates exceptional charge extraction capability, establishes superior interfacial contact, and directly coordinates with perovskite through Pb-O bond formation. Furthermore, the C=O groups effectively anchor uncoordinated Pb 2 + ions, modulating perovskite crystallization kinetics and improving film quality. Subsequent hot-pressing treatment elevates the champion device PCE to 15.12% through enhanced interfacial compactness. Remarkably, the optimized devices retain 93.26% of initial efficiency after 700 h of ambient air exposure without encapsulation, demonstrating exceptional environmental stability. This work provides a comprehensive strategy for developing high-performance, durable carbon-based perovskite photovoltaics through rational interface engineering.
