0D/1D/2D Co@Co2Mo3O8 nanocomposite constructed by mutual-supported Co2Mo3O8 nanosheet and Co nanoparticle: Synthesis and enhanced hydrolytic dehydrogenation of ammonia borane

Jiahuan He,Ziwei Huang,Wenzheng Chen,Xuezhang Xiao,Zhendong Yao,Zhaoqing Liang,Liujun Zhan,Ling Lv,Jiacheng Qi,Xiulin Fan,Lixin Chen

Recently, hydrolysis of ammonia borane (AB) is a promising way of producing and employing hydrogen in mild conditions. Nonetheless, the failure to develop inexpensive and high-performance catalyst impedes the further scale hydrogen energy application of AB. Given the fact that ex-situ formed nanocatalysts could be prone to abscission and agglomeration for insufficient dispersion and support, 1D composite microrods with 0D/1D/2D spatial structure constructed by mutual-supported 2D single-crystal Co 2 Mo 3 O 8 nanosheets and 0D Co nanoparticles (denoted as Co@Co 2 Mo 3 O 8 ) have been in-situ synthesized and introduced into the hydrolysis of AB for the first time. Excitingly, the novel Co@Co 2 Mo 3 O 8 exhibits one of the best catalytic performances in the hydrolysis of AB for non-noble metal/metal oxide heterojunction catalysts with TOF value reaching 17.28 m o l H 2 m o l ca t - 1 m i n - 1 at 25 °C, which is 3.95 and 24.0 times that of the single Co 2 Mo 3 O 8 and Co. Meanwhile, two kinds of catalytic components with high intrinsic activity (Co 2 Mo 3 O 8 and Co) and supporting each other in the 0D/1D/2D spatial structure (nanoparticles, microrods, and nanosheets) along with plentiful O vacancies induce the outstanding catalytic activity of Co@Co 2 Mo 3 O 8 . The large-scale controllable preparation method for in-situ fabrication of non-noble metal 0D/1D/2D composite catalysts with high performances would be an accelerator for great potential application for hydrolysis of AB.

Kinetics and molecular mechanism of enhanced fluoranthene biodegradation by co-substrate phenol in co-culture of Stenotrophomonas sp. N5 and Advenella sp. B9

Li Changmei,Wei Gengrui,Wu Haizhen,Wang Yuxiao,Zhu Shuang,Wei Chaohai

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and phenol are persistent pollutants that coexist in coking wastewater (CWW). Fluoranthene (Flu) is the predominant PAH species in the CWW treatment system. Our work emphasized on distinguishing the effects of phenol on Flu biodegradation by co-culture of Stenotrophomonas sp. N5 and Advenella sp. B9 and illustrated the molecular mechanisms. Results showed Flu biodegradation by co-culture was enhanced by phenol. According to the first-order degradation kinetic analysis of Flu, phenol significantly increased the biodegradation rate constant and shortened the half-life of Flu. Transcriptome analysis pointed out the up-regulation of DNA repair activity and 3717 significantly differentially expressed genes (DEGs), were triggered by 800 mg/L phenol. GO enrichment analysis suggested these DEGs are mainly concentrated in biochemical processes such as metal ion binding and alpha-amino acid biosynthesis, which are closely associated with Flu biodegradation, indicating that phenol promotes DNA repair activity and reduces Flu genotoxicity. qRT-PCR was performed to detect the gene expression of aromatic ring-opening dioxygenase. Combined with transcriptome analysis, the qRT-PCR results suggested phenol did not induce the expression of related PAHs-degrading enzymes. RNA extraction and microbial growth curves of COC and COC + Ph provided further evidence that phenol serves as co-substrate which increases biomass and the concentration of degrading enzymes, therefore promoting the Flu degradation.

Lenvatinib and Cu2−xS nanocrystals co-encapsulated in poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) for synergistic chemo-photothermal therapy against advanced hepatocellular carcinoma

Qi Xu,Qiuting Li,Zhe Yang,Piao Huang,Han Hu,Zhimin Mo,Zizhen Qin,Zushun Xu,Tianyou Chen,Shengli Yang

Lenvatinib (LT) is gradually replacing sorafenib as an alternative targeted drug against advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the anticancer effects of LT are still limited because of its low cytotoxicity, multidrug resistance (MDR), and tumor relapse. Herein, we constructed a smart biophotonic nanoplatform to overcome the barriers preventing high performance. LT and copper sulfide nanocrystals (Cu2−xS NCs) with excellent photothermal properties in the near-infrared-II (NIR-II) zone were co-encapsulated in poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) through nanoprecipitation. Both in vitro and in vivo evaluations demonstrated that Cu2−xS NCs enhanced the anticancer efficacy of LT, without recurrence. In addition, the presence of copper ions could allow glutathione (GHS) to be consumed and oxygen to be produced, likely suppressing the expression of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and overcoming the issue of MDR relating to LT. More importantly, synergistic chemo-photothermal therapy with LT and Cu2−xS NCs was more effective than any single therapy or theoretical combination. This nanoplatform is promising for advancing future LT-based treatment strategies for HCC therapy.

In situ construction of hollow carbon spheres with N, Co, and Fe co-doping as electrochemical sensors for simultaneous determination of dihydroxybenzene isomers

Hui Yang,Shunxing Li,Huiwu Yu,Fengying Zheng,Luxiu Lin,Jie Chen,Yuehai Li,Ye Lin

Control of the active sites/centers plays an important role in the design of novel electrode materials with unusual properties and achievement of sensors with high performance. In this study, three-dimensional (3D) freestanding multi-doped hollow carbon spheres (N–Co–Fe–HCS) with a layer thickness of 30 nm, which contained multiple active sites of the heteroatom N and transition metals (Co and Fe), were synthesized via a simple template method (with SiO2 as the template) and cost-efficient in situ self-polymerization, self-adsorption/reduction and carbonization strategies. Moreover, a series of hollow carbon sphere composites of the same family (N–HCS, N–Co–HCS and N–Fe–HCS) were prepared by this sensible process using the same method and precursors but different doping elements. These differences lead to different active sites/centers from hollow carbon spheres and improved electrocatalytic activities for dihydroxybenzene isomers. Furthermore, N–Co–Fe–HCS as an electrochemical sensor exhibited excellent simultaneous qualitative and quantitative determination performance for catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ). The detection limit and the linear range were 75 nmol L−1 and 0.5–500 μmol L−1 for CC and 80 nmol L−1 and 0.5–1500 μmol L−1 for HQ, respectively. The interference from the components coexisting in river water on the detection of CC and HQ was not observed. These results indicate that high-performance electrochemical sensors can be constructed by in situ multi-element doping into electrode materials to achieve multi-active sites.

Enhanced CO2 separation performance of P(PEGMA-co-DEAEMA-co-MMA) copolymer membrane through the synergistic effect of EO groups and amino groups

Liangliang Dong,Yue Wang,Mingqing Chen,Dongjian Shi,Xiaojie Li,Chunfang Zhang,Hui Wang

We report a high performance and CO2-philic, comb copolymer consisting of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) for use in composite membranes for CO2/N2 separation. Since the copolymers contain ethylene oxide (EO) groups and amino groups, the separation performance was expected to be enhanced by the synergistic effect of (1) the increased solubility of CO2 by dipole–dipole interactions between CO2 and EO units and (2) the enhanced CO2 transport by reversible reactions between CO2 and amino groups. The best separation performance was obtained from the PEDM5 composite membrane with 25 mol% of PEGMA, at which the CO2 permeability was 308 barrer and CO2/N2 selectivity was 38, which displays a potentially promising alternative for CO2 separation from N2.

Hexamethylenetetramine-derived pyridinic N abundant porous carbon-supported Co/Co-Nx nanoparticles as highly efficient oxygen reduction catalyst and zinc-air battery cathode

X. Zhang,J. Xu,L. Wu

Fuel cells and metal-air batteries attracted extensive research attention owing to high power density, renewability, and environmental friendliness. Hence, developing heteroatom-doped pyridinic N abundant porous carbon materials with large surface area have an extensive effect on oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for fuel cell and metal-air battery. Herein, high content of pyridinic N porous carbon-supported Co/Co-N x nanoparticles were synthesized as ORR catalysts by carbonizing complexes of hexamethylenetetramine (HMT) and Co(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O with silica template. The HMT-Co@SiO 2 -900 with high content of pyridinic N, large specific surface area, and porous structure exhibits a more positive half-wave potential (0.85 V) than 20% Pt/C and the outstanding performance oxygen evolution reaction  behavior. The low Tafel slope of HMT-Co@SiO 2 -900 revealed the faster reaction kinetics during ORR. The HMT-Co@SiO 2 -900 zinc-air battery showed a high excellent cyclic stability in continuous charge/discharge cycles for 420 times at 10 mA/cm 2 . This research provides an efficient strategy for the preparation of pyridinic N porous electrocatalyst by the reduction of diffusion restriction and exposure of active sites.

Peapod-Like Structured B/N Co-Doped Carbon Nanotube Array Encapsulating MxPy (M = Fe, Co, and Ni) Nanoparticles for High-Rate Potassium Storage

Xiwen Tao,Zhengguang Zhang,Zheng Li,Shuangsheng Xiong,Shengmei Wang,Faming Gao,Chen Wang,Li Hou

Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have become the desirable alternatives for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) originating from abundant reserves and appropriate redox potential, while the considerable radius size of K+ leading to poor reaction kinetics and huge volume expansion limits the practical application of PIBs. Hybridization of transition-metal phosphides and carbon substrates can effectively optimize the obstacles of poor conductivity, sluggish kinetics, and huge volume variation. Thus, the peapod-like structural MxPy@BNCNTs (M = Fe, Co, and Ni) composites as anode materials for PIBs were synthesized through a facile strategy. Notably, the unique architecture of B/N codoped carbon nanotube array as fast ion/electron transfer pathways effectively improves the electronic conductivity of composites. The MxPy nanoparticles (NPs) are encapsulated in BNCNTs with an amorphous carbon layer (5–10 nm), which discernibly alleviate the volume changes during potassiation/depotassiation. In conclusion, the composites show a commendable cycling performance, possessing reversible capacities of 111, 152, and 122 mA h g–1 after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g–1 with a negligible capacity loss for FeP@BNCNT, CoP/Co2P@BNCNT, and Ni2P@BNCNT electrodes, respectively. Especially, after 1000 cycles at 2.0 A g–1, the CoP/Co2P@BNCNT electrode still possesses a capacity of 87.9 mA h g–1, demonstrating excellent rate performance and long-term life. This work may offer an innovative and viable route to construct a stable architecture for solving the issue of poor stability of TMP-based anodes at a high current density.

New Insights into the Activation of Peracetic Acid by Co(II): Role of Co(II)-Peracetic Acid Complex as the Dominant Intermediate Oxidant

Zihao Zhao,Xinhong Li,Hongchao Li,Jieshu Qian,Bingcai Pan

The combination of Co(II) and peracetic acid (PAA) is an important alternative advanced oxidation process (AOPs), in which R-O• radicals including acetyloxyl radicals (CH3C(O)O•) and acetylperoxyl radicals (CH3C(O)OO•) have been considered to be the primary reactive species for the oxidative degradation of contaminants. However, it is still unclear how the active Co species participates in this process. In this study, we conduct a series of experiments including chemical probing, radical quenching, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and Co(III) oxidation to investigate the degradation mechanism of contaminants in the Co(II)/PAA process, using bisphenol A (BPA) as target pollutant. On the basis of these results, we propose a Co(II)-PAA complex (Co(II)-OO(O)CCH3) to be the primary reactive species, while R-O• radicals and Co(III) (available as dimeric Co-peroxide species) derived from the decomposition of Co(II)-PAA complex are the minor contributors for the oxidation of BPA. Factors, including PAA concentration, Co(II) concentration, solution pH, inorganic anions, and natural organic matters (NOM), that might affect the oxidation performance of the Co(II)/PAA process were also investigated systematically. This study sheds new light on the mechanistic understanding of the Co(II)/PAA process for the oxidation of contaminants in water.

Highly efficient Pt-Co alloy hollow spheres with ultra-thin shells synthesized via Co-B-O complex as intermediates for hydrogen evolution reaction

Min Wei,Lei Huang,Shangli Huang,Zhenyu Chen,Dandan Lyu,Xiaoran Zhang,Shuangbao Wang,Zhi Qun Tian,Pei Kang Shen

Improving utilization of precious metals is one of the crucial challenges for electrochemical energy catalysis. Tuning precious metal structure to expose active sites is an effective strategy to reduce mass loading in the practical application. Herein, Pt-Co hollow nanospheres were synthesized via a sequential reduction strategy using amorphous Co-B-O complex as the key spheres-forming intermediates. The modulation mechanism of Pt-Co hollow nanospheres formation was established by investigating critical factors of addition sequence of reducing agent, the type of reducing agents and the ratio of Pt and Co precursors. The optimized Pt-Co hollow nanospheres with the Pt/Co molar ratio of 1:1 by this method is characterized by the average diameter of around 30 nm and the shell thickness of 2.3 nm. They displays superior performance for enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in the aspect of activity and stability in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , in which the mass activity of the Pt-Co hollow spheres exhibits 2.82 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C and its stability also has a significant enhancement. The outstanding activity of the Pt-Co hollow nanospheres for HER is mainly attributed to its highly accessible electron/mass transport path, expose active sites on the ultra-thin shells and strain effect induced by the hollow sphere structure. This hollow nanospheres with ultra-thin shell provides a promising way to develop highly efficient precious metal based electrocatalysts.

Surface co-modification with highly-dispersed Mn & Cu oxides of g-C3N4 nanosheets for efficiently photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO and CH4

Xinxin Zhang,Kang Hu,Xuliang Zhang,Wajid Ali,Zhijun Li,Yang Qu,Hao Wang,Qingyang Zhang,Liqiang Jing

In this work, an in-situ way has been developed to achieve the co-modification of highly-dispersed Mn and Cu oxides to g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets for efficient CO 2 reduction. The Mn & Cu amount-optimized nanosheets exhibit the improved photocatalytic activity for CO 2 reduction to CO and CH 4 both by 3 times compared with the generally-bulk g-C 3 N 4 , mainly attributed to the nanosheet structure and to the roles of modified Mn and Cu oxides. Based on the transient-state surface photovoltage responses, transient-state photoluminescence spectra, and electrochemical measurements, it is confirmed that the modified Mn and Cu oxides could respectively capture the photogenerated holes and electrons, and provide the catalytic functions for water oxidation and CO 2 reduction. Remarkably, the simultaneous introduction of Mn and Cu oxides shows an obvious synergistic effect on the improvement of photocatalytic activity for CO 2 reduction. This work provides a feasible way to synthesize high-activity g-C 3 N 4 -based photocatalysts for energy production.

Reactive dye/poly(styrene-co-butyl acrylate-co-trimethyl(vinylbenzyl) ammonium chloride) nanospheres with high coloration performance for cleaner dyeing of cotton fabrics

Fang Kuanjun,Xie Ruyi,Liu Xiuming,Zhao Gaojie,Han Dongmei,Chen Weichao,Shi Zhen,Hao Longyun,Cai Yuqing

Abstract The low utilization of dyestuff in textile coloration leads to serious environmental pollution and wasting of resources. Dye/polymer nanospheres have high absorbing, reflecting and scattering light properties due to the large specific surface area, the regular shape, and the uniform size. In the present study, we report the reactive dye/poly(styrene-butyl acrylate-trimethyl ammonium chloride) composite nanosphere as a highly efficient colorant for cationic cotton fabrics. The dye contents of the four colored nanospheres can reach to 217–404 mg/g. The hydration diameters of the composite nanospheres are 83–101 nm for four different reactive dyes. They have the negative zeta potentials, approximately − 25.3 to − 37.6 mV. The reactive dye/copolymer nanospheres exhibit much more powerful coloration ability for cotton fabrics and higher dye utilization than the ordinary reactive dyes. The color depths of cotton fabrics dyed with colored nanospheres are 2.8, 4.9, 10.6 and 4.2 times of the values of the corresponding dye colored samples. The dye/copolymer nanospheres have much larger color gamut than the ordinary dyes. The color durability and levelness of the dye/copolymer nanospheres on cotton fibers are good enough for practical applications. What’s more important is that the residual dye/copolymer nanospheres in the dye bath can be reused in the next dyeing process. This novel nanosphere dyeing method does not only save the colorants but also avoid the discharging of colored sewage. Graphical abstract The reactive dye/poly(St-BA-VBT) nanospheres were successfully fabricated by adding the cationic poly(St-BA-VBT) nanospheres dispersions into reactive dye solutions. This article offered a novel dyeing method for cotton fabrics using dye/poly(St-BA-VBT) nanospheres. These colored nanospheres can endow the cotton fabrics with good color performance and avoid the discharging of colored waste water, which provide a green way for textile coloration.

Application of CH4/N2 separation based on poly(styrene-b-isoprene-b-styrene) (SIS)-poly(dimethylsiloxane-co-methylhydrosiloxane) (PDMS-co-PMHS) crosslinked membrane

Xing Yang,Yayun Zheng,Lan Wang,Qingping Guo,Haiquan Shan,Zongxiang Xu,Jujie Luo

This work involves the preparation and characterization of poly(styrene-b-isoprene-b-styrene)-poly(dimethylsiloxane- co -methylhydrosiloxane) (SIS-c-PDMS-co-PMHS) crosslinked membranes towards CH 4 /N 2 separation. SIS-c-PDMS-co-PMHS was synthesized via a simple hydrosilylation reaction with various PDMS-co-PMHS contents. The structure of crosslinked membranes was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , indicating the degree of hydrosilylation reaction. The morphology of sample membranes was observed in detail by means of Scanning Electron Microscope analysis . Thermodynamic stability and the crosslinked behavior of crosslinked membranes were explored by thermogravimetric analysis and Soxhlet extraction experiments. Furthermore, single gas (CH 4 , N 2 ) permeability was measured using the time-lag method. The CH 4 permeability of crosslinked membranes with 70 wt% PDMS-co-PMHS could reach 503 Barrer at 25 °C and 1 bar, which is significantly greater than that of SIS (25.9 Barrer), while the CH 4 /N 2 ideal selectivity hardly changed. Notably, CH 4 permeability further improved by 77.6% (893.4 Barrer) as the temperature increased to 55 °C. For the CH 4 /N 2 (50/50 vol%) mixed gas, the SIS-c-PDMS-co-PMHS-70 sample membrane exhibited ideal gas separation performance relative to that of the pure SIS membrane (CH 4 : 447.4 vs. 24.2 Barrer,N 2 : 188.1 vs. 9.46 Barrer).
