Reductive decomposition of phosphogypsum for CaO production is proposed to proceed under a CO2 atmosphere to avoid the presence of CaS in the product. In combination with thermodynamic analysis, thermogravimetric tests are conducted with the monitoring of gas composition to explore the reaction mechanism between C/CaSO4 and CO2. Three reaction stages are identified, i.e., CaSO4 reduction, reaction of CaS with CaSO4, and CaS oxidation by CO2. The reaction path depends on the C/CaSO4 molar ratio and temperature. Further, phosphogypsum decomposition in CO2 is further conducted in a fluidized bed reactor, and data show that over 96.2% of CaSO4 in phosphogypsum is decomposed into CaO at 1000 °C and a C/CaSO4 molar ratio of 1.0 within 83.7 min. Phosphogypsum decomposition in air or nitrogen has lower CaO production. Further, kinetic analyses of CaS oxidation with CO2 in the presence of CaSO4 were performed to illustrate the effect of the CaS–CaSO4 reaction on the CaS–CO2 reaction.

Development of efficient, selective and low-cost photocatalysts, ideally constructed from Earth-abundant elements, is still a big challenge for CO 2 photoreduction. Herein, adopting mixed halides strategy, the activity of all-inorganic perovskites toward CO 2 reduction is enhanced sharply under simulated sunlight without photosensitizer, meanwhile maintaining high selectivity of CO and CH 4 production. Via regulating ratio of Br and Cl, the yield of CO and CH 4 changes obviously and the optimized catalyst is CsPb(Br 0.5 /Cl 0.5 ) 3 with a total yield of CO and CH 4 up to 875 μmol/g (selectivity of 99%) which outperforms any other reported halide perovskites and is 4.5 and 9.1 folds higher than that of CsPbBr 3 and CsPbCl 3 under the same condition. The efficient charge separation and moderate stability in mixed-halide perovskites may account for the excellent performance in CO 2 reduction. This study may provide a new strategy in design of high performance and low-cost halide perovskite materials for photocatalysis.

Dry hydrated potassium carbonate (DHPC) is a free-flowing powder prepared by uniformly mixing hydrated K2CO3 and hydrophobic nanosilica. We demonstrated that DHPCs can absorb CO2 rapidly because of their high surface-to-volume ratio. Their CO2 capture performance is superior to that of 30 wt% monoethanolamine (MEA), an industry standard. DHPC-75 (containing 75 wt% K2CO3) has a CO2 uptake capacity of 233 mg g−1 (90% saturation uptake within 13 min), higher than the widely used 30 wt% MEA aqueous solution (111 mg g−1, 90% saturation uptake within 25 min). DHPC-75 also exhibits an excellent cycling performance, thus becoming a promising candidate for practical application.

To improve the conversion efficiency and reduce the CO 2 emissions associated with the reforming of biomass tar to syngas, photothermal catalysts were prepared in this study through various impregnation methods. Photothermocatalytic CO 2 reforming (PTCR) of benzene as a tar model compound, was conducted using the prepared Ni/TiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 catalysts. The results show that the introduction of TiO 2 facilitates the conversion of NiO to Ni during the photothermal reaction, while the photocatalysis of TiO 2 significantly enhances the photothermocatalytic activity of the Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts at low temperatures. Moreover, the methodology for catalyst preparation involving the loading of NiO before TiO 2 is also beneficial to catalyst performance. However, when the mass ratio of TiO 2 to Al 2 O 3 exceeds 1, the specific surface area, pore volume, and structural stability of the catalysts are reduced. The results of PTCR experiment show the following optimal Ni/TiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 catalyst preparation parameters: 25% NiO content and a TiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 ratio of 3:7; 450 °C calcination temperature and a nitrogen atmosphere. The maximum benzene conversion achieved through PTCR with the 0.25Ni/0.3Ti0.7Al(M2) catalyst is 88.2%. However, a large amount of coke is deposited onto the spent catalyst surface, contributing significantly to catalyst deactivation.

Zeolite LTA, with high porosity and uniform pore distribution, has been widely used in the gas adsorption field. In this paper, a 1.38 nm thick two-dimensional zeolite LTA was synthesized from kaolin, changing the cubic morphology of the traditional zeolite LTA. SEM and TEM images showed that the zeolite LTA exhibited a lamellar structure. In a comparative experiment with CO2 adsorption at different temperatures, the 2D zeolite LTA with a large specific surface area could capture more CO2 than the conventional 3D zeolite LTA. In addition, the CO2/CH4 selectivity of the 2D Zeolite LTA was 76.78 at 298 K.

Wood sponges obtained by structure-retaining delignification of natural wood sheets are promising for CO 2 storage. Herein, lignin in balsa wood is selectively removed through chemical treatment, leading to a highly porous structure. To boost the CO 2 adsorption capacity, amine agents are grafted on the delignified wood via a condensation reaction. The resulting amine-grafted wood sponges exhibit hierarchical porosity and are mechanically resilient. A relatively high CO 2 uptake of 1.22 mmol g −1 (25 °C, 1 bar) is achieved due to the physisorption of hierarchical pores and chemisorption of high amine group loading. Such amine-grafted wood sponges fabricated from top-down strategy hold great potential to serve as renewable CO 2 capture materials.

Mg-CO 2 batteries, which exploit the greenhouse gas CO 2 as cathode active species, are an appealing next-generation battery candidate due to their high efficiency energy storage and value-added CO 2 utilization. However, compared with other metal-CO 2 systems, few aprotic Mg-CO 2 batteries have been reported so far as a result of several crucial problems including the comparatively slow redox reaction kinetics, a large decomposition energy barrier of the reduction products, and poor reversibility in their multi-electron three-phase cathodic reactions in nonaqueous environments. Herein, a rechargeable Mg-CO 2 battery is developed by using a Mo 2 C-CNTs catalytic cathode, a nonaqueous electrolyte, and a magnesium metal anode. The Mo 2 C-CNTs catalytic cathode can greatly reduce the charge overpotential of the Mg-CO 2 battery through tuning the CO 2 reduction pathways. The results of a variety of ex situ and in situ experiments as well as theoretical calculations show the Mo 2 C catalyst not only induces surface molecular adsorption for faster reaction kinetics but also improves the selectivity toward MgC 2 O 4 in the CO 2 reduction process for a higher Faraday efficiency. An exceptional low voltage hysteresis is achieved for the Mg-CO 2 battery. This work demonstrates a promising strategic option for rechargeable nonaqueous Mg-CO 2 batteries for simultaneously addressing energy and environmental issues.

Polyamine-based solid adsorbents are promising candidates for CO2 capture, but long-term stability under practical regeneration conditions (100% CO2 at 120 °C) remains the biggest hurdle. In this paper, we prepared MXene-supported adsorbents with excellent long-term stability by combining two strategies. First, 1,2-butylene oxide (BO) with an epoxy group was grafted onto polyethyleneimine (PEI) to suppress the formation of urea. Second, Ti3C2(OH)x MXene was used as the support of polyamines to improve the wear resistance and thermal conductivity. The prepared MXene-supported adsorbents exhibit a large working capacity (2.6 mmol g−1) and a very stable cycling stability because of the synergetic effect. The adsorbents also exhibit a very low regeneration heat of 1.90 MJ per kg (CO2) and a high mechanical stability against attrition (0.26% after 5 h time-on-stream). Thus, these MXene-supported adsorbents make the CO2 capture process promising.

Multifunctional electrocatalytic desalination is a promising method to increase the production of additional valuable chemicals during the desalination process. In this work, a multifunctional desalination device was demonstrated to effectively desalinate brackish water (15 000 ppm) to 9 ppm while generating formate from captured CO2 at the Bi nanoparticle cathode and releasing oxygen at the Ir/C anode. The salt feed channel is sandwiched between two electrode chambers and separated by ion-exchange membranes. The electrocatalytic process accelerates the transportation of sodium ions and chloride ions in the brine to the cathode and anode chamber, respectively. The fastest salt removal rate to date was obtained, reaching up to 228.41 μg cm−2 min−1 with a removal efficiency of 99.94%. The influences of applied potential and the concentrations of salt feed and electrolyte were investigated in detail. The current research provides a new route towards an electrochemical desalination system.

Carbon dots (CDs) have attracted great attention in recent years owing to their potential applications in such as photocatalysts, organic synthesis, and bioimaging. However, it is always difficult for the separation and recycling of carbon dots from homogeneous reaction systems, which may limit their application in catalysis. A stimuli-responsive phase transfer of CDs is promising to solve these problems. In this work, we developed a novel class of CO2-responsive carbon dots decorated with different molecular weight polyetheramines (PEAs) (Mn = 230, 400, 2000 g/mol, respectively) and investigated their phase transfer behavior. It was found that PEA230-CD were well able to reversibly transfer between water and organic solvents by alternative bubbling and removal of CO2, the phase transfer efficiency of PEA400-CD was about 40%, and PEA2000-CD cannot transfer. The mechanism of the CO2-switched phase transfer involves the reversible reaction of PEA-functionalized CDs with CO2 and reversible formation of hydrophilic bicarbonates salts. As an example of applications, the phase transfer strategy was successfully applied in a Henry reaction by using the CDs as catalysts for efficient homogeneous catalysis, heterogeneous separation, and recycling of the CDs.

The CO 2 methanation is an important process in coal-to-gas, power-to-gas and CO 2 removal for spacecraft. Recently, metal-organic framework (MOF) derivatives have been demonstrated as high-performance catalysts for CO 2 upgrading processes. However, due to the high costs and low stability of MOF derivatives, it still remains challenge for the development of alternative synthesis methods avoiding MOF precursors. In this work, we present the sol-gel method for loading Ni-MOF to silica support in two-steps. Upon modifying the procedure, a more simplified one-step sol-gel method has been developed. Furthermore, the obtained Ni/SiO 2 catalyst still exhibits great catalytic performance with a CO 2 conversion of 77.2% and considerable CH 4 selectivity of ~100% during a stability test for 52 h under a low temperature of 310 °C and high GHSV of 20,000 mL·g −1 ·h −1 . Therefore, this work provides a ground-breaking direct strategy for loading MOF derived catalysts, and might shed a light on the preparation of highly dispersed Ni/SiO 2 catalyst.

The conversion of CO 2 into carbon materials and oxygen gas has great significance for reducing the greenhouse gas concentrations of Earth and realizing in situ utilization of Mars’ atmosphere. In this work, LiF-Li 2 O melts containing CO 2 were electrolyzed using a Ni cathode and Pt anode at 850°C. Carbon materials with different morphologies were deposited on the cathode and oxygen evolution was detected in anode gas. The products were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and gas chromatography. The results demonstrated that CO 2 was firstly captured and converted into the carbonate in LiF-Li 2 O melts, and subsequently electrolyzed. The morphologies of the carbon material obtained on the cathode were dependent on the electrolysis potentials. The rate of CO 2 and O 2 production in the anode gas was related to the reaction process, current density, and potentials. Electrochemical decomposition of CO 2 into carbon materials and oxygen gas in a fluoride melt was proved to be feasible.
