Positively charged nano-CuO/N-doped pomegranate peel biochar for efficient degradation of chloroquine phosphate and phosphorus recovery

Bo Xu,Zhengcai Zhu,Silin Yang,Haiyan Yang,Jing Yang,Zhengjun Shi,Dawei Wang

Regulating the surface charge of biochar is crucial for its catalytic performance and adsorption capability. Here, Cu 2+ and melamine (Me) modified pomegranate peel powder (Cu-Me-PP) was prepared by coordination self-assembly method using waste pomegranate peel as the raw material. Then, nano-CuO and N-graphite doped biochar (CuO-N-PC) with positively charged surfaces were successfully prepared by pyrolysis of Cu-Me-PP and valence state regulation. The CuO-N-PC-300/ peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system could completely degrade the chloroquine phosphate (CQ) antibiotic within 30 min. Moreover, the effects of catalyst dosage, PMS dosage, solution pH, CQ concentration, and coexisting ions on the degradation efficiency of CQ were studied. It was found that CuO-N-PC-300 could not only catalyze the degradation of CQ but also remove 86.8 % of the phosphorus in the solution via electrostatic adsorption. Zeta potential analyses and molecular electrostatic potential calculations revealed that the electrostatic adsorption between the positively charged biochar and PO 4 3− were the key factors for the recovery of phosphorus. Electrochemical analyses, quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests, and DFT calculations were employed to explore the potential activation mechanism of PMS. Both interfacial electron transfer and the Cu 2+ /Cu + redox reaction were important pathways for activating PMS, generating a large number of •OH and 1 O 2 during the degradation of CQ. Finally, two degradation pathways of CQ were proposed based on LC-MS analysis, and the ecological toxicity was evaluated. This work provided an efficient method for the activation of PMS and the recovery of phosphorus by constructing positively charged nano-CuO sites on the surface of biochar.

Atom-by-atom electrodeposited CuO nanostructures on carbon electrode for rapid detection of type II diabetes drug Gliclazide

Hong Wan,Mingfang Zhan,Sima Akter,Minglan Ma,Chunyan Yin,Huwei Liu,Sakil Mahmud

CuO-modified SPCE enables sensitive electrochemical detection of gliclazide. • Electrodeposited CuO nanostructures increase electroactive surface area. • Oxidation of gliclazide follows proton-coupled two-electron transfer kinetics. • Exhibits low LODs (8.35 μM by LSV, 3.0 μM by amperometry) and wide linearity. • Demonstrates high stability, reproducibility, and recovery in real samples. The sensitive and selective detection of gliclazide (GLi), a critical antidiabetic drug, is essential for pharmaceutical quality control and therapeutic monitoring. This work presents a highly efficient electrochemical sensor based on a screen-printed carbon electrode modified with electrodeposited copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO/SPCE). Comprehensive physicochemical characterization confirmed the successful formation of a nanostructured CuO film, significantly enhancing the electroactive surface area. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) revealed a well-defined oxidation peak at 0.315 V with a peak current ( I ) of −2.725 μA at pH 4.0, indicating an irreversible, adsorption-controlled, proton-coupled two-electron transfer process. Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) exhibited excellent linearity (10–107 μM, R 2  = 0.9890) with a limit of detection (LOD) of 8.35 μM, while amperometric detection further improved the sensitivity, yielding an LOD of 3.0 μM. The sensor demonstrated outstanding reproducibility (relative standard deviation, RSD = 5.28%), stability (RSD = 4.53%), and high recovery rates (93.21–109.28%) in real pharmaceutical samples. These findings highlight CuO/SPCE as an effective, rapid, and reliable platform for routine GLi monitoring in pharmaceutical and clinical settings. Transition Metal (Fe2O3, Co3O4 and NiO)-Promoted CuO-Based α-MnO2 Nanowire Catalysts for Low-Temperature CO Oxidation

Haiou Zhang,Yixin Zhang,Huikang Song,Yan Cui,Yingying Xue,Cai-e Wu,Chao Pan,Jingxin Xu,Jian Qiu,Leilei Xu,Mindong Chen

As a toxic pollutant, carbon monoxide (CO) usually causes harmful effects on human health. Therefore, the thermally catalytic oxidation of CO has received extensive attention in recent years. The CuO-based catalysts have been widely investigated due to their availability. In this study, a series of transition metal oxides (Fe2O3, Co3O4and NiO) promoted CuO-based catalysts supported on the α-MnO2nanowire catalysts were prepared by the deposition precipitation method for catalytic CO oxidation reactions. The effects of the loaded transition metal type, the loading amount, and the calcination temperature on the catalytic performances were systematically investigated. Further catalyst characterization showed that the CuO/α-MnO2catalyst modified with 3 wt% Co3O4and calcined at 400 °C performed the highest CO catalytic activity (T90= 75 °C) among the investigated catalysts. It was supposed that the loading of the Co3O4dopant not only increased the content of oxygen vacancies in the catalyst but also increased the specific surface area and pore volume of the CuO/α-MnO2nanowire catalyst, which would further enhance the catalytic activity. The CuO/α-MnO2catalyst modified with 3 wt% NiO and calcined at 400 °C exhibited the highest surface adsorbed oxygen content and the best normalized reaction rate, but the specific surface area limited its activity. Therefore, the appropriate loading of the Co3O4modifier could greatly enhance the activity of CuO/α-MnO2. This research could provide a reference method for constructing efficient low-temperature CO oxidation catalysts. Keywords:transition metal oxides;CuO-based catalysts;Co3O4modification;α-MnO2nanowire;catalytic oxidation of CO

In this study, CMCS-CuO nanoparticles were added to the SA matrix by blending method to prepare SA/CMCS-CuO composite microspheres. The chemical structure and morphology of the composite beads were characterized. The results showed that there was a certain molecular interaction between CMCS-CuO NPs and SA matrix. The swelling experiment showed that with the increase of the mass of CMCS-CuO NPs, the maximum swelling ratio of gel microspheres decreased from 49.83% to 38.2%, and the time to reach the maximum swelling ratio also increased from 8 h to 11 h. Cytotoxicity test, hemolysis test, and cell migration test showed that the composite microspheres had good biocompatibility. Curcumin was added to the composite bead matrix by the blending method, and curcumin-loaded SA/CMCS-CuO composite beads were prepared by the crosslinking method. In vitro release experiments showed that SA/CMCS-CuO composite microspheres had good pH sensitivity, and the addition of CMCS-CuO NPs prolonged the in vitro release time of cur. It has certain application potential in the field of drug release.

Core–shell ZIF-67(Co) wrapped CuO as high efficient peroxymonosulfate catalyst for the degradation of methylene blue

Zhu Wenjun,Zuo Xiaohua,Deng Xiangyi,Zhang Xinhao,Yao Chuang,Wang Xiaobo

Core–shell ZIFs wrapped CuO hybrid materials (CuO@ZIF-67(Co)) were designed, synthesized, characterized, and employed as peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activators to degrade methylene blue (MB). It demonstrated outstanding catalytic activity on account of the unique structure and the synergistic effect between CuO cores and ZIF-67(Co) shells, resulting in complete degradation of MB (10 mg/L) in 1 min. Reactive oxygen species (ROSs) research showed that both SO 4 − and OH were responsible for the removal of MB. The synergistic activation mechanisms in the CuO@ZIF-67(Co)/PMS system were investigated, which mainly involved the effective electron transfer of CuO and ZIF-67(Co) for accelerating the cycle of Cu II /Cu I and Co III /Co II . This study broadens the application of MOF-derived materials for wastewater treatment.

UV-activated CuO nanospheres modified with rGO nanosheets for ppb-level detection of NO2 gas at room temperature

Haineng Bai,Cheng Feng,Hui Guo,Xiaoli Li,Weifeng Liu,Yamin Feng,Kuili Liu,Dunjun Chen,Youdou Zheng,Fuqiang Guo

Monitoring and reducing NO 2 pollution at room temperature is indispensable for human survival. Thus, we propose a light-activated route (UV light, 100 mW/cm 2 ) to realize a high-performance NO 2 detection based on CuO/rGO gas sensor. The CuO/rGO sensor under UV light illumination exhibits a high response of 22.18–100 ppm NO 2 at 23 ℃, which is approximately 1.36 times of the CuO/rGO sensor and 2.31 times of the CuO sensor under dark, respectively. Meanwhile, under UV light illumination, the CuO/rGO sensor has a fast response/recovery speed of 10.9/30.9 s to 20 ppm NO 2 at 23 ℃, which is obviously better than that under dark. Moreover, the light-activated CuO/rGO sensor has excellent repeatability, selectivity, ultra-low detection limit (50 ppb) and long-term stability. The significantly appealing gas-sensing performance of CuO/rGO sensor is mainly ascribed to the mesoporous structure, high specific surface area and plentiful oxygen vacancy of CuO/rGO nanocomposites . More attractively, the photo-generated carriers and formed heterojunction also greatly improve the carrier migration in the context of the NO 2 /CuO/rGO interaction, enhancing the gas-sensing performance of gas sensor. Our work will provide insight in utilizing light illumination to realize ultrasensitive and room-temperature detection of ppb-level NO 2 gas.

Towards self-driven and enzyme-free sweat glucose photoelectrochemical sensing via decorating CuO nanoparticles on TiO2 hierarchical nanotubes

Shengchen Ke,Linling Qin,Ruoxi Zhang,Weijian Zhu,Wenxiang Lu,Lu Ma,Shaolong Wu,Xiaofeng Li

It is of great importance to develop a non-invasive and portable glucose sensor to address challenges and obstacles brought by invasive glucose sensors, such as negative physical and psychological impacts to patients during the fingertip blood collection, limited environment of use for enzyme-based electrodes, and cumbersome active-driven integrated devices. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors have great potential in this regard. In this work, self-driven and enzyme-free sweat glucose PEC sensing is realized by constructing TiO 2 hierarchical nanotubes modified by CuO nanoparticles (CuO@TiO 2 HNT). A sensitivity of 138.9 μA mM −1 cm −2 in the low concentration range (< 200 μM) and a detection limit of 0.7 μM (Signal/Noise=3) are achieved by the as-prepared CuO@TiO 2 HNT photoelectrode at relatively zero bias. The testing results for sweat glucose detection before and after meal consumption are consistent with those from commercial glucometers. The CuO@TiO 2 HNT photoelectrode works well at absolutely zero bias and in a wide temperature range (e.g., 0–60 °C). The extraordinary sensing performance can be mainly attributed to the following two factors: (1) the TiO 2 hierarchical nanotubes have an excellent light-capturing property and large specific surface area, and (2) the CuO nanoparticles substantially facilitate surface-carrier transfer for the glucose oxidation reaction. This work provides an enzyme-free sensing photoelectrode for self-driven sweat glucose detection and an alternative route to portable and noninvasive sensing of glucose.

One-step green synthesis of Cu2O/CuO@rGO composites for ppt level detection of NO2 at room temperature

Jinjuan Li,Jing Hu,Nan Li,Miao Cheng,Tao Wei,Qianqian Liu,Ruirui Wang,Wanfei Li,Yun Ling,Yafei Zhang,Bo Liu

Conventional metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors often suffer from high operating temperatures, low selectivity, and complex synthesis processes for NO2 detection. In this work, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets are coated on NaOH-etched Cu2O/CuO urchin-like spheres to form Cu2O/CuO@rGO composites via a one-step green synthesis method at room temperature (RT). The gas sensor based on this material has been utilized for detecting NO2 at RT (25 °C), and the effects of Cu2O addition and reaction time on the morphology as well as gas-sensing properties of the as-prepared sensor are investigated. Of interest, the sensor based on the 550Cu2O/CuO@rGO-5 composite has an ultra-high response (S = 871) to 5 ppm NO2 gas at RT with a response/recovery time of 32/73 s, and the detection limit is as low as 90.6 ppt. In addition, the gas sensor shows excellent selectivity and repeatability. The excellent sensing performance of the as-prepared 550Cu2O/CuO@rGO sensor is attributed to the framework structure of Cu2O/CuO@rGO, the urchin-like hierarchical structure of the Cu2O/CuO and the synergistic effect of the p–p (Cu2O–CuO) heterojunction. This exploration of the present work offers a good reference for mass, green, and low-power sensing material preparation.

Rationally designed hierarchical carbon supported CuO nano-sheets for highly efficient electroreduction of CO2 to multi-carbon products

Hehua Tang,Yitian Zhou,Yifan Liu,Yao Qian,Zetian Qiu,Anqi Chen,Bo-Lin Lin

Electrochemical reduction of CO 2 to value-added products is a promising path to mitigate CO 2 emissions and achieve renewable energy conversion and storage. Cu-based electrocatalysts can catalyze electrochemical conversion of CO 2 to multi-carbon products, however, low catalytic activity and selectivity have hindered the practical applications of this technology. Rationally designing the structure of catalysts for an improved catalytic performance is of vital importance. Here, we reported a hierarchical phenol formaldehyde resin carbon supported CuO nano-sheets (CuO/PFRC) catalyst for enhanced CO 2 electroreduction to multi-carbon products. Compared with CuO nano-sheets (CuO) and commercial VXC-72r carbon black supported CuO nano-sheets (CuO/XVC), CuO/PFRC showed an enhanced catalytic activity towards multi-carbon products (mainly ethylene). The electrochemical measurements exhibited an ethylene Faradaic efficiency of 47.2 % at − 0.64 V (vs. RHE) with a high partial current density of 599 mA cm −2 , which outperformed most previously reported studies. We proposed that the 3D hierarchical structure of CuO/PFRC could facilitate electron transfer process, thus promoting the catalytic activity. Further study uncovered that the hierarchical CuO/PFRC had higher CO 2 adsorption capacity than control samples, which may favor to form a higher local CO 2 concentration environment during CO 2 electroreduction reaction and further facilitate catalytic activity promotion.

CuO nanosheets incorporated scrap steel slag coupled with persulfate catalysts for high-efficient degradation of sulfonamide from water

Keke Yin,Linlin Hao,Guiju Li

A highly efficient and magnetically recoverable persulfate (PS) catalyst was prepared for the removal of sulfonamide (SMD) from wastewater, which is difficult to be degraded by the conventional biological treatment. In this study, the scrap steel slag (SSS) was used as supporting carrier and the CuO nanosheet was incorporated on the surface of SSS. The optimal conditions were determined as follows: the dosage of CuO/SSS was 1 g L −1 , the PS concentration was 4 mM and the optimal initial pH was 6.85. Under the optimal conditions, the maximum SMD removal efficiency of 80.29% was achieved within 30 min by using CuO/SSS + PS. In addition, the CuO/SSS + PS system had a wide pH range (5–9) and more than 60% removal efficiency of SMD could be obtained with the pH between 3 and 11. The mechanism based on the phase transformation of Cu(I/II), Cu(II/III) and Fe(II/III) was elucidated by using different analytical techniques, such as SEM, XRD, XPS, BET, FTIR, VSM characterization and free radical analysis. This study provided a new pathway for the SSS resource utilization and the effective degradation of SMD from the refractory wastewater by using CuO/SSS catalyst coupled with PS system.

Adsorption and Removal of Antibiotic Pollutants using CuO−Co3O4 Co-modified Porous Boron Nitride Fibers in Aqueous Solution

Wenjuan Bai,Bozheng Wang,Shaobo Yang,Song Yan,Chaochao Cao,Zheng Zhou,Jiawei Ji,Kai Guo,Chengchun Tang

Graphical A bimetallic oxide co-modified CuO−Co 3 O 4 /P−BNFs material is reported in this work, which significantly improved the adsorption performance on TCs, and the removal rate of TCs was more than twice that of P−BNFs under the same conditions. The presence of antibiotic contaminants in aqueous environment already poses significant risks to ecological sustainability, biodiversity and human public health and safety. Therefore, it is urgent to develop practical water pollution control technologies and new materials. Here, we prepared CuO−Co 3 O 4 co-modified porous boron nitride fibers (P−BNFs) for the adsorption and removal of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) in aqueous environment. The prepared adsorbents were characterized by XRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM, TEM and BET, and the adsorption behavior was explored by batch experiments. The results show that the removal percentage for doxycycline (DC) reaches 98.68 %, which was much higher than that of P−BNFs, and the modification results of P−BNFs with CuO or Co 3 O 4 alone. After five regeneration cycles, the removal rate of DC by CuO−Co 3 O 4 /P−BNFs was still as high as 89.33 %. This is promising and indicates that the prepared CuO−Co 3 O 4 /P−BNFs adsorbent has good renewable recycling performance and practical application prospects.

CuO@carbon nanofiber as an efficient peroxymonosulfate catalyst for mitigation of organic matter fouling in the ultrafiltration process

Xiaoxiang Cheng,Yinuo Liu,Lu Zheng,Fengxun Tan,Congwei Luo,Bing Xu,Jingtao Xu,Xuewu Zhu,Daoji Wu,Heng Liang

Persulfate oxidation has been increasingly integrated with membrane separation for water purification, whereas the oxidizing ability of persulfate is relatively limited, and appropriate activation methods are urgently required. In this work, a novel catalyst of carbon nanofiber (CNF) supported CuO (CuO@CNF) was synthesized for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The micro-morphology showed that CuO nanoparticles were well dispersed on the CNF support, which solved the agglomeration problem of nanoparticles and improved the catalytic ability. Furtherly, PMS oxidation activated by CuO@CNF was proposed as a pre-processing means for improving ultrafiltration (UF) water purification efficiency and mitigating membrane fouling. The prepared CuO@CNF was more efficient than individual CNF and CuO in activating PMS for the reduction of various typical natural organic matter, improving permeation flux, and mitigating membrane fouling. The fouling control efficiencies were also verified by characterizing the membrane surface functional groups. The CuO@CNF catalyst could signally promote the oxidative capacity by generating a series of reactive oxygen species, thus enhancing the removal of organics with varying species and molecular weight ranges in surface water. With respect to the fouling condition, the specific permeation flux after filtration was improved from 0.25 to 0.61, with the removal rate of reversible fouling resistance reached 89.6%. The fouling mechanism was apparently altered, with both standard and complete blocking dominated throughout the filtration process. The findings are beneficial for the development of new strategies to improve membrane-based water purification efficiency.
