A simple method was developed to prepare fluorescent nitrogen/boron-doped carbon dots (N,B-CDs) in the gram scale. The results showed that the CDs exhibited blue photoluminescence (PL) under 365 nm ultraviolet radiation and excitation-dependent emission. Heteroatoms entered the CDs to enhance the photochemical properties, and their positive properties can be attributed to the presence of guanidino group and functionalized with boronic acid for realizing their utilization in certain applications. These materials could be applied to monitor Fe3+ via static PL quenching, yielding a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.74 μM. Furthermore, the charged and boronic acid groups on the prepared N,B-CDs enabled their use as recognition elements to bind with the bacteria through electrostatic interaction and allowed covalent interactions to form the corresponding boronate ester with E. coli (E. coli) bacterial membrane. This method could satisfy a linear range of 102–107 with LOD of 165 cfu ml−1 for E. coli. This method was applied for the determination of E. coli in tap water and orange juice samples, and satisfactory results were obtained.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging class of porous materials that attracted tremendous attention as eco-friendly photocatalysts. However, poor charge separation in most MOFs largely thwarts their photocatalytic performance. In this work, Materials of Institut Lavoisier-100(Fe) (MIL-100 (Fe)) based on iron mesh was successfully fabricated by in situ growth. MIL-100(Fe) doped with polyaniline, namely MIL-100(Fe)/PANI, were then fabricated by galvanostatic deposition followed by annealing. Compared to pure MIL-100(Fe), MIL-100(Fe)/PANI composites exhibited excellent photocatalytic performances towards Thiamphenicol (TAP) degradation and Escherichia coli ( E. Coli .) inactivation. The apparent rate constant, k , for TAP elimination of the MIL-100(Fe)/PANI composites with H 2 O 2 is approximately 3 times as high as that of pure MIL-100(Fe). The electrochemical studies showed enhanced photocatalytic performances, which can be attributed to the electronic conductivity of PANI polymers. Quenching experiments, fluorescent tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) all suggested ⋅O 2 − , e − , ⋅OH and h + as reactive oxidizing species (ROSs) involved in the photocatalytic process, where ⋅OH played the predominant ROSs. The transformation products of TAP were also isolated and characterized by high-resolution mass spectrometry, and transformation pathways of TAP under Vis/MIL-100(Fe)/PANI/H 2 O 2 were tentatively clarified based on involved intermediates. Herein, MOFs conjugated conductive polymers nanocomposites look promising as efficient photocatalysts for organic pollutants degradation and bacteria inactivation. This work could offer novel strategies for the development of heterojunction composites with enhanced photocatalytic performances for better environmental remediation.

To investigate the role of E-beam treatment on the structure-properties of oxidized starch, this study investigated the influence of E-beam (1, 3, 6 kGy) pretreatment combined with NaClO oxidation (1% and 3%) on the multi-scale structural, physicochemical, and digestive properties of cassava starch. Results showed that E-beam treatment did not affect the starch surface, but the oxidative modification increased granule surface roughness. Also, the synergistic modification preserved starch growth rings, FT-IR patterns and crystal types. Further investigations revealed that E-beam induced starch molecular degradation, leading to decreased molecular weight, depolymerization of long chains, and a loss of short-range order. Moreover, oxidation treatment exacerbated the disruption in starch molecular structure, as evidenced by crystallinity loss, viscosity, and enthalpy reduction. Notably, E-beam induces starch yellowing; however, oxidative modification increases starch whiteness. Additionally, the synergistic modification improved native starch's lower solubility and enhanced the resistant starch content. Results suggest that E-beam pretreatment can enhance oxidative modification by promoting the exposure of active sites of starch molecules without destroying starch structure and can be considered an advanced, green, and efficient pretreatment for modified starch in the future.

Storage time is one of the important factors affecting the aroma quality of Pu-erh tea. In this study, the dynamic changes of volatile profiles of Pu-erh teas stored for different years were investigated by combining gas chromatography electronic nose (GC-E-Nose), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS), and gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS). GC-E-Nose combined with partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) realized the rapid discrimination of Pu-erh tea with different storage time (R 2 Y = 0.992, Q 2 = 0.968). There were 43 and 91 volatile compounds identified by GC–MS and GC-IMS, respectively. A satisfactory discrimination (R 2 Y = 0.991, and Q 2 = 0.966) was achieved by using PLS-DA based on the volatile fingerprints of GC-IMS. Moreover, according to the multivariate analysis of VIP > 1.2 and univariate analysis of p < 0.05, 9 volatile components such as linalool and (E)-2-hexenal were selected as key variables to distinguish Pu-erh teas with different storage years. The results provide theoretical support for the quality control of Pu-erh tea.

In this study, an advanced oxidation process with E/Ce(IV) synergistic PMS (E/Ce(IV)/PMS) was established for the efficient removal of Reactive Blue 19 (RB19). The catalytic oxidation performance of different coupling systems was examined and the synergistic effect of E/Ce(IV) with PMS in the system was substantiated. The oxidative removal of RB19 in E/Ce(IV)/PMS was excellent, achieving a removal efficiency of 94.47% and a reasonable power consumption (EE/O value was 3.27 kWh·m −3 ). The effect of pH, current density, Ce(IV) concentration, PMS concentration, initial RB19 concentration and water matrix on the removal efficiency of RB19 were explored. Additionally, quenching and EPR experiments showed that the solution contains different radicals such as SO 4 ·− , HO∙ and 1 O 2 , where 1 O 2 and SO 4 ·− played key roles, but HO∙ just acted a weaker role. Ce ion trapping experiment confirmed that Ce(IV) was involved in the reaction process and played a major role (29.91%). RB19 was subject to three possible degradation pathways, and the intermediate products displayed well biochemical properties. To conclude, the degradation mechanism of RB19 was explored and discussed. In the presence of current, E/Ce(IV)/PMS performed a rapid Ce(IV)/Ce(III) cycle, continuously generating strong catalytic oxidation Ce(IV), The reactive radicals derived from the decomposition of PMS, in conjunction with Ce(IV) and direct electro-oxidation, efficiently destroyed the molecular structure of RB19 and showed an efficient removal rate.

For its significant technological interest, a systematic investigation on mechanical and thermal conduction properties of natural rubber reinforced by functionalized hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets is highly desirable. We herein first demonstrate a unique synthesis of hydroxyl-functionalized boron nitride nanosheets (OH-BNNSs) via a simple one-pot reduction reaction. This involves negative charging by treating BNNSs with lithium in liquid ammonia and subsequent bubbling of oxygen into dispersion of BNNS salts. Subsequently, a series of functionalized boron nitride nanosheets/natural rubber (NR) composites were fabricated by latex mixing and co-coagulation. Co-coagulating a stable aqueous suspension of OH-BNNSs with natural rubber latex afforded a weblike morphology consisting of platelet networks between the latex particles. Compared to pure rubber, the tensile strength and storage modulus at 25 °C for OH-BNNSs/NR (5 wt %) are increased by 466% and 1 order of magnitude, respectively. Benefiting from the unique structure, the composite at 5 wt % shows a 40% improvement in thermal conductivity relative to pure rubber. This latex-based method provides a facile and effective strategy to design and fabricate advanced functional BNNS-based polymeric nanocomposites with a segregated filler network morphology and considerable property enhancements in direct competition with graphene sheets. The composites could be potentially used in heat dissipative tires or conveyor belts.

The production of (S)-N-boc-3-hydroxy piperidine (NBHP) via asymmetric bioreduction of 1-boc-3-piperidinone with reductase is impeded by the need for expensive coenzymes NAD(P)H. In order to regenerate the coenzyme in situ, the gene of alcohol dehydrogenase from Thermoanaerobacter brockii and glucose dehydrogenase from Bacillus subtilis were ligated into the multiple cloning sites of pRSFDuet-1 plasmid to construct the recombinant Escherichia BL21 (DE3) that co-expressing alcohol dehydrogenase and glucose dehydrogenase. Different culture conditions including the medium composition, inducer and pH etc were systematically investigated to improve the enzyme production. The enzyme activity was increased more than 11-fold under optimal culture condition, from 12.7 to 139.8 U L−1. In the further work, the asymmetric reduction of 1-boc-3-piperidinone by whole cells of recombinant E. coli was systematic optimized to increase the substrate concentration and reaction efficiency. At last, S-NBHP (>99% ee) was prepared at 500 mM substrate concentration without external addition of cofactors. The conversion of S-NBHP reached 96.2% within merely 3 h, corresponding a high space-time yield around 774 g L−1 d−1. All these results demonstrated the potential of recombinant E. coli BL21 (DE3) coupled expressing alcohol dehydrogenase and glucose dehydrogenase for efficient synthesis of S-NBHP.

This study was focused on the differences between three concentrations of four safe bio-active volatile terpenes and natural compounds (trans-cinnamaldehyde, thymol, menthol, and vanillin) on the egg yolk volatile components. In which, Headspace Solid phase Micro Extraction (HS-SPME) followed by GC/MS were used for volatiles analysis, and electronic nose (E-Nose) with 18 sensors was used for the aroma pattern. In the results, a total of 111 different volatile compounds were identified by using GC/MS. Some ketones, amines, nitro and organic acid compounds such as hexanone were significantly reduced after using these compounds. On the other hand, first principal components (PC1) of trans-cinnamaldehyde (0.1%) was decreased significantly ( p < .05) to −4.8 ± 0.8, compared to the control with 4.3 ± 2.1. And, it increased benzaldehyde and nonanal peaks area significantly to 46.56 ± 14.46 and 9.22 ± 4.81 MPA. In menthol (0.1%), the content of d-limonene was decreased to 4.65 ± 0.49 MPA, compared to the control with 14.16 ± 4.95 MPA. On the other hand, by E-Nose, vanillin (0.1%) PC1 was decreased significantly to −4.48 ± 0.43. Moreover, thymol (0.1%) decreased hydrocarbon sensation to 0.448 ± 0.005. And, vanillin (0.1%) decreased hydrogen sulfide and ketones sensation to 0.169 ± 0.01 and 0.344 ± 0.01, respectively. In conclusion, this study is providing novel information to understand the effects of bio-active molecules on the biological fatty media volatility. Also, it explains how terpenes can protect egg yolk media from the unacceptable odor formation which results from the degradation of its lipids and proteins.

Electronic skin (e-skin) inspired by the sensory function of the skin demonstrates broad application prospects in health, medicine, and human–machine interaction. Herein, we developed a self-powered all-fiber bio-inspired e-skin (AFBI E-skin) that integrated functions of antifouling, antibacterial, biocompatibility and breathability. AFBI E-skin was composed of three layers of electrospun nanofibrous films. The superhydrophobic outer layer Poly(vinylidene fluoride)-silica nanofibrous films (PVDF-SiO 2 NFs) possessed antifouling properties against common liquids in daily life and resisted bacterial adhesion. The polyaniline nanofibrous films (PANI NFs) were used as the electrode layer, and it had strong “static” antibacterial capability. Meanwhile, the inner layer Polylactic acid nanofibrous films (PLA NFs) served as a biocompatible substrate. Based on the triboelectric nanogenerator principle, AFBI E-skin not only enabled self-powered sensing but also utilized the generated electrical stimulation for “dynamic” antibacterial. The “dynamic-static” synergistic antibacterial strategy greatly enhanced the antibacterial effect. AFBI E-skin could be used for self-powered motion monitoring to obtain a stable signal output even when water was splashed on its surface. Finally, based on AFBI E-skin, we constructed an ultra-long-range human-machine interaction control system, enabling synchronized hand gestures between human hand and robotic hand in any internet-covered area worldwide theoretically. AFBI E-skin exhibited vast application potential in fields like smart wearable electronics and intelligent robotics.

Flocculation is one of the promising methods for harvesting microalgae. In this study, a series of grafted cationic chitosan-cyclodextrin composite flocculants (CTS/β-CDs) with different structural properties were prepared from chitosan and cyclodextrin. The results showed that the harvesting efficiency of CTS/β-CD-1 for C. vulgaris reached 99.91%. The chain type of polymeric flocculants with moderate graft chain lengths (L = 10–20) and tighter branched chain density distribution (D = 1.0–1.8) was favorable for C. vulgaris harvesting. The addition of CTS/β-CDs caused the discrete C. vulgaris cells to be flocculated and aggregated, and the reorganization of particles resulted in larger particles after flocculation, improving the dewatering performance of microalgae flocs. CTS/β-CDs had no significant inhibitory effect on the extraction of lipids, proteins and carbohydrates, and did not affect the extraction and quality of fatty acid methyl esters, and the re-cultivation experiments of the harvested water showed that chitosan-based flocculant was able to effectively reduce the cost of microalgae harvesting. Electrostatic interactions and bridging were the main harvesting mechanisms between CTS/β-CD-1 and C vulgaris . E-DLVO modeling suggested that flocculation is mainly a result of electrostatic and acid-base interactions when the distance between particles is small. At higher pH, the harvesting efficiency of CTS/β-CD-1 with C. vulgaris decreased. The study contributes to a better understanding of the structure–activity relationship between the structural characteristics of flocculants and the harvesting performance.

Soil pollution by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) arising from the crude disposal and recycling of electronic and electrical waste (e-waste) is a serious issue, and effective remediation technologies are urgently needed. Nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) and bimetallic systems have been shown to promote successfully the destruction of halogenated organic compounds. In the present study, nZVI and Pd/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles synthesized by chemical deposition were used to remove 2,2′,4,4′,5,5′-hexachlorobiphenyl from deionized water, and then applied to PCBs contaminated soil collected from an e-waste recycling area. The results indicated that the hydrodechlorination of 2,2′,4,4′,5,5′-hexachlorobiphenyl by nZVI and Pd/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles followed pseudo-first-order kinetics and Pd loading was beneficial to the hydrodechlorination process. It was also found that the removal efficiencies of PCBs from soil achieved using Pd/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles were higher than that achieved using nZVI and that PCBs degradation might be affected by the soil properties. Finally, the potential challenges of nZVI application to in situ remediation were explored.

Sample pretreatment is a key to rapid screening of pathogens for prevention and control of foodborne diseases. Magnetic immunoseparation is a specific method based on antibody–antigen reaction to capture the target bacteria and concentrate them in a smaller-volume buffer. The use of nano-sized magnetic particles could improve the separation efficiency of bacteria but require much higher gradient and strength magnetic field. In this study, a strong magnetic bioseparator with a mean field strength of 1.35 T and a mean gradient of 90 T/m was developed with the use of the 30 nm and 180 nm magnetic particles to specifically separate and efficiently concentrate foodborne bacterial pathogens using Escherichia coli O157:H7 as a model bacterium. The polyclonal antibodies against E. coli were evaluated using Dot ELISA analysis for their good affinity with the target bacteria and then used to modify the surface of the magnetic nanoparticles by 1-(3-Dimethylaminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC·HCl) method and streptavidin-biotin binding. The magnetic particle concentrations were optimized to be 40 µg/ml and 100 µg/ml for the 30 nm and 180 nm particles, respectively, the immunoreaction time was optimized to be 45 min for both sizes of particles, and the separation times were optimized to be 60 min and 2 min for the 30 nm and 180 nm particles, respectively. The total magnetic separation time was 2 h and 1 h for the 30 nm and 180 nm particles, respectively. The experimental results demonstrated that the bioseparator with the use of either 30 nm or 180 nm immunomagnetic particles could achieve a separation efficiency of >90% for E. coli O157:H7 at the concentrations ranging from 10 2 to 10 5 cfu/ml. No obvious interferences from non-target foodborne pathogens, such as Salmonella Typhimurium and Listeria innocua , were found. For overall consideration of the consuming time, the cost, and the separation efficiency, the 180 nm magnetic particles are practical for rapid screening applications; however the 30 nm magnetic particles are preferable for specific detection applications. This immunomagnetic bioseparator can be integrated with either conventional culture methods or some rapid detection methods, such as biosensors and PCR, for more sensitive detection of foodborne pathogens.
