Promoted effect of alkalization on the catalytic performance of Rh/alk-Ti3C2X2 (XO, F) for the hydrodechlorination of chlorophenols in base-free aqueous medium

Mei Ming,Yanlin Ren,Min Hu,Yun Zhang,Ting Sun,Yuling Ma,Xiaojing Li,Weidong Jiang,Daojiang Gao,Jian Bi,Guangyin Fan

Exploring MXenes as supports for synthesis of highly efficient catalysts are extremely important for hydrodechlorination of chlorophenols because of the acute toxicity and strong potential bioaccumulation of chlorophenols. We reported a facile strategy to synthesize Rh nanoparticles deposited on 2D alk-Ti 3 C 2 X 2 (X   =   O, F) (alk-Ti 3 C 2 X 2 for short) MXene, which was prepared through the removal of the Al layers of Ti 3 AlC 2 and post-treatment by alkalization. Modifying the Ti 3 C 2 X 2 support by alkalization triggered the substitution of surface fluorine groups with surface oxygen species. The changes in the surface chemistry of alk-Ti 3 C 2 X 2 effectively prevented particle aggregation to form well-dispersed Rh nanoparticles in small sizes with relative high metal dispersion, thereafter improving the hydrogen uptake capacity of the catalyst. Consequently, the Rh/alk-Ti 3 C 2 X 2 catalyst significantly enhanced the catalytic performance for the HDC reaction, which could be assigned to the large number of active components from small Rh nanoparticles. This strategy provides a basis for investigating the use of MXenes as supports to synthesize well-defined metal nanoparticles in 2D layered structures for potential applications.

Diverse specialized metabolism and their responses to lactalbumin hydrolysate in hairy root cultures of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge and Salvia castanea Diels f. tomentosa Stib

Yumin Fang,Zhuoni Hou,Xiaodan Zhang,Dongfeng Yang,Zongsuo Liang

Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge ( S. miltiorrhiza ) and Salvia castanea Diels f. t omentosa Stib ( S. castanea ) are both important medicinal plants which have been widely used to treat cardiovascular diseases. Tanshinone and phenolic acid are active and specialized metabolites in the two species. However, the divergent mechanism of specialized metabolism in the two species is yet unknown. We found that S. castanea produced higher levels of cryptotanshinone, tanshinone IIA, caffeic acid, and rosmarinic acid, but lower levels of dihydrotanshinone I and salvianolic acid B than S. miltiorrhiza . Some key genes involved in specialized metabolism were potentially associated with the diverse metabolism between the two species. LH with 1 g l −1 contributed more to tanshinone accumulation in S. castanea than that in S. miltiorrhiza . Genes involved in tanshinone biosynthesis in S. castanea were also more sensitive to LH than those in S. miltiorrhiza . Knowledge about diverse specialized metabolism in the two species will help us understand mechanism of tanshinone and phenolic acid biosynthesis.

Quenching induced Cu and F co-doping multi-dimensional Co3O4 with modulated electronic structures and rich oxygen vacancy as excellent oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalyst

Xiaowei Li,Jianmin Gou,Lili Bo,Tian Fang,Chengzhuo Li,Jiangping Ma,Xiaolin Guan,Jinhui Tong

The development of highly efficient non-precious electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a significant challenge. In this work, we introduce a highly effective OER electrocatalyst, Cu-F-Co 3 O 4 , synthesized by doping copper (Cu) and fluorine (F) into Co 3 O 4 using a quenching method. Both experimental and theoretical calculations reveal that Cu and F incorporation significantly shifts the d-band center closer to the Fermi level, creates abundant oxygen vacancies, and facilitates the reconstruction of the catalyst to form the CuCo 2 O 4-y F y /CuO heterojunction. This structural modification enhances the OER performance of the catalyst. Additionally, the multi-dimensional architecture exposes more active sites and accelerates mass and charge transfer kinetics. The optimal catalyst, Cu-F-Co 3 O 4 -0.7, demonstrates a low overpotential of 290 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 , along with remarkable stability exceeding 100 h, significantly outperforming both pristine Co 3 O 4 and benchmark RuO 2 electrocatalysts. These findings offer new insights into activating surface reconstruction in spinel oxides by engineering both anion and cation defects for water oxidation.

Elevating both capacity and voltage tolerance of P2-type layered cathodes with cooperative Al cation/F anion co-doping for advanced sodium-ion batteries

Cao Jiang,Biao Chen,Maowen Xu,Jian Jiang

The single ionic doping helps suppress the detrimental phase transition when P2-type layered cathodes are charged to a high voltage above 4.0 V ( vs. Na + /Na). However, this is realized at the sacrifice of their electrochemical redox centers and output capacities. To achieve both high voltage tolerance and capacity, we herein propose a cooperative Al cation and F anion co-doping strategy. The XANES detections affirm that substituting Ni/O with Al/F intends to augment the amount of highly active Mn 3+ cations in cathodes, making more contributions on specific capacities for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Besides, this co-doping treatment would disorder the transition metal ionic arrangements of cathodes, disrupting long-range Jahn-Teller effects and impeding other undesired phases generation. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, our designed Na 2/3 Ni 0.23 Al 0.1 Mn 2/3 O 1.95 F 0.05 (NAF) cathodes show a delivered capacity as high as 142.0 mAh g −1 (0.2C), and an impressive capacity retention of 86.7 % after all cycling. The in-situ XRD detections reveal no apparent O2 phase peaks emerge until 4.23 V upon deep Na + extraction from NAF. This work provides a key understanding toward cation/anion co-doping effects, opening up a useful avenue for rational design of practical P2-type cathodes for SIBs.

Low Trap Density Para-F Substituted 2D PEA2PbX4 (X = Cl, Br, I) Single Crystals with Tunable Optoelectrical Properties and High Sensitive X-Ray Detector Performance

Jiayu Di,Haojin Li,Li Chen,Siyu Zhang,Yinhui Hu,Kai Sun,Bo Peng,Jie Su,Xue Zhao,Yuqi Fan,Zhenhua Lin,Yue Hao,Peng Gao,Kui Zhao,Jingjing Chang

Exploring halogen engineering is of great significance for reducing the density of defect states in crystals of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites and hence improving the crystal quality. Herein, high-quality single crystals of PEA2PbX4 (X = Cl, Br, I) and their para-F (p-F) substitution analogs are prepared using the facile solution method to study the effects of both p-F substitution and halogen anion engineering. After p-F substitution, the triclinic PEA2PbX4 (X = Cl, Br) and cubic PEA2PbX4 (X = I) crystals unifies to monoclinic crystal structure for p-F-PEA2PbX4 (X = Cl, Br, I) crystals. The p-F substitution and halogen engineering, together with crystal structure variation, enable the tunability of optoelectrical properties. Experimentally, after the p-F substitution, the energy levels are lowered with increased Fermi levels, and the bandgaps of p-F-PEA2PbX4 (X = Cl, Br, I) are slightly reduced. Benefitting from the enhancement of the charge transfer and the reduced trap density by p-F substitution and halogen anion engineering, the average carrier lifetime of the p-F-PEA2PbX4 is obviously reduced. Compared with PEA2PbI4, the X-ray detector based on p-F-PEA2PbI4 perovskite single-crystal has a higher sensitivity of 119.79 μC Gyair-1·cm-2. Moreover, the X-ray detector based on p-F-PEA2PbI4 single crystals exhibits higher radiation stability under high-dose X-ray irradiation, implying long-term operando stability.

Analyte-induced enhancement of oxidase-like activity of cerium-based metal-organic frameworks for “turn-on” detection of 2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline

Xueer Lin,Jiahui Zou,Guancheng Zhu,Linfeng Pang,Yuqi Chen,Yanyan Huang

Heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs), formed during the thermal processing of meat, are a group of carcinogenic and mutagenic compounds that pose significant risks to food safety and human health. Among them, 2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5- f ]quinoline (IQ) is considered one of the most hazardous substances, making its monitoring critically important. However, conventional detection techniques are often limited by sophisticated and costly instruments, complex operation process, and highly trained personnel. In this study, we proposed a “turn-on” colorimetric sensing strategy for the detection of IQ based on the analyte-triggered enhancement of oxidase-like activity of Ce-UiO-66 nanozyme. Ce-UiO-66 was synthesized using a simple solvothermal method via the self-assembly of terephthalic acid and Ce 4+ ions. The resulting Ce-UiO-66 exhibited excellent oxidase-like activity, catalyzing the oxidation of 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) via the generation of superoxide anions from oxygen. In the presence of IQ, electrostatic interactions facilitated the rapid adsorption of IQ onto the negatively charged Ce-UiO-66 surface, reversing the surface charge to positive. This charge shift enhanced the affinity of Ce-UiO-66 for negatively charged ABTS, significantly accelerating its oxidation. Based on this principle, we established a “turn-on” colorimetric sensing strategy for the detection of IQ, achieving a detection limit of 5.41 μM. This Ce-UiO-66 nanozyme-based detection method demonstrated high selectivity and anti-interference performance and could efficiently distinguish its analog 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5- b ]pyridine (PhIP) in complex food matrices. Further experimental data illustrated that this strategy was successfully applied to the detection of IQ in roasted meat samples. This work might offer a simple, cost-effective, and robust approach for rapid screening of IQ in highly contaminated processed meats.

Chaetoglobosin F Attenuates Amyloid-β–Induced Neurotoxicity in Caenorhabditis elegans by Regulating Autophagy and Oxidative Stress Via the Insulin/IGF-1 and p38 MAPK Pathways

Lu Xuefei,Xu Kai,Zhou Zhenyu,Ding Gaonan,Zhang Yuan,Liang Yongwen,Zhou Jiahui,Jia Minglu,Zhang Yitang,Shen Li,Li Hualing

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease for which no effective clinical therapies currently exist. The neuroprotective potential of Chaetoglobosin F (CF), a fungal secondary metabolite, was investigated in this study using a Caenorhabditis elegans ( C. elegans ) model of AD that are transgenic nematodes expressing amyloid-beta (Aβ). Key parameters evaluated included paralysis rate, lifespan, motor and cognitive functions, Aβ plaque aggregation, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), and autophagosome formation. The transcriptional levels of genes were examined by real time PCR. Results showed that treatment with CF significantly delayed paralysis, extended lifespan, and ameliorated Aβ-induced deficits in locomotion and chemotaxis. CF markedly reduced Aβ plaque accumulation, suppressed intracellular ROS levels, and promoted autophagosome formation. Furthermore, CF had potent inhibitory effects on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. These beneficial effects were correlated with the upregulation of crucial genes, including daf-16 , skn-1 , pmk-1 , mtl-1 , unc-51 , bec-1 , lgg-1 , sod-1 and sod-3 , which confirmed the improving antioxidant defenses and autophagy. Our findings demonstrate that CF confers strong neuroprotection against Aβ-induced toxicity in C. elegans by co-regulating oxidative stress and autophagy through the Insulin/IGF-1 (IIS) and p38 MAPK signaling pathways. These results suggest that CF is a promising natural compound for further investigation as a potential therapeutic agent for AD. Graphical

Interfacial Regulation of Hard-Anodized Aluminum Alloy for Fabrication of a Wear-Resistant Superhydrophobic F-SiO2@PU Composite Coating with Enhanced Long-Term Corrosion Protection

Hong-Bo Wang,Miao Yu,Chong Ren,Muhaiminul Islam Shakil,Chen Chen,Liang Zhou,Da-Yan Ma,Wei Wang

Conventional superhydrophobic coatings on aluminum alloys are frequently limited by inadequate coating–substrate adhesion, poor mechanical robustness, and the vulnerability of their surface micro/nanostructures to mechanical damage. To address these challenges, a hydroxyl-rich anodic oxide interlayer was formed via hard anodization followed by a hydroxylation treatment, thereby enhancing interfacial bonding and providing abundant active anchoring sites for coating deposition. Using this interface-engineering strategy, a mechanically durable superhydrophobic F-SiO2@polyurethane (PU) composite coating with hierarchical micro/nanostructures was successfully fabricated on aluminum alloy substrates through a facile spray-coating process. The anodized substrate provides abundant hydroxyl groups and interfacial anchoring sites, while the PU matrix enhances structural integrity and facilitates particle fixation. Incorporating fluorinated SiO2nanoparticles produced a hierarchical micro/nanostructure with low surface energy. After 10,000 cm of abrasion and 200 tape-peeling cycles, the coating maintained contact angles above 150°. The coating maintained superior corrosion resistance during prolonged immersion in acidic, alkaline, and saline environments. The improved durability and corrosion resistance originate from the synergistic effects of strong interfacial bonding, polymer barrier protection, and the fluorinated hierarchical structure. This study offers a promising strategy for developing durable superhydrophobic coatings for long-term protection of aluminum alloys.

Synergistic regulation of drying quality in star anise (Illicium verum Hook. f.) through thermal and non-thermal pretreatments: Roles of structural modification and enzyme influence

Silei Zhang,Qingbo Huang,Xiangmin Kuang,Chaofan Guo,Yongli Jiang,Fujie Zhang,Daihong Pan,Ming Du,Sakamon Devahastin,Junjie Yi

Blanching is widely applied as a pretreatment for drying star anise, yet how different pretreatment routes regulate enzyme activity, tissue structure, and final quality remains insufficiently clarified. Here, hot-water blanching (HB), alkaline blanching (AB), radio-frequency treatment (RF), high pressure processing (HPP), and alkaline-assisted HPP (AHPP) were comparatively evaluated, with freezing incorporated as a non-thermal pretreatment option. Drying behavior, water-state redistribution, color development, enzyme activities, bioactive compounds, and aroma-related attributes were assessed to elucidate structure-function relationships. Freezing-assisted pretreatments provided the most consistent improvement in dehydration, reducing the overall drying time from ∼19 h (untreated) to 13–15 h and markedly decreasing residual bound/immobilized water after drying. AHPP resulted in the highest essential oil yield (1.92-fold), while freezing combined with HPP produced the highest redness parameter ( a ⁎  = 14.96), closer to market-typical coloration. Although HB fully inactivated PPO and POD, it led to substantial color deterioration. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents decreased significantly after AHPP ( p < 0.05 ), likely due to enhanced diffusion/leaching losses. Overall, the results indicate that pretreatments modulate enzyme activities and quality primarily through controlled structural alteration, and freezing-assisted strategies offer a practical route to improve drying efficiency while tuning key quality attributes of dried star anise.

Magnetic, recyclable PtyCo1−y/Ti3C2X2 (X = O, F) catalyst: a facile synthesis and enhanced catalytic activity for hydrogen generation from the hydrolysis of ammonia borane

Guangyin Fan,Xiaojing Li,Yuling Ma,Yun Zhang,Jiangtao Wu,Bin Xu,Ting Sun,Daojiang Gao,Jian Bi

Exploring the applications of two dimensional layered Ti3C2X2 (X = OH, F) is of great importance because of its excellent physical and chemical properties. Herein, we report the synthesis of the bimetallic catalyst PtyCo1−y/Ti3C2X2via a facile one-pot approach using Ti3C2X2 as the support. The in situ synthesized PtyCo1−y/Ti3C2X2 is subsequently applied as a catalyst for hydrogen evolution from the hydrolysis of ammonia borane at 25 °C. Experimental results show that Pt0.08Co0.92/Ti3C2X2 exhibits excellent catalytic activity for the hydrolysis of ammonia borane with a high hydrogen generation rate of 100.7 L H2 (min gPt)−1 and turnover frequency of 727 mol H2 (min molPt)−1 because of the synergistic effect between Pt and Co. Moreover, Pt0.08Co0.92/Ti3C2X2 could be recovered from the reaction mixture by a magnet and recycled at least seven times, thus showing its high recycling efficiency.

Flower-like FeWO4/f-MWCNTs Sphere for Triethylamine Gas Sensors Operating at Room Temperature: Sensing Performance, Mechanism Study, and Application to Detection of Fish Freshness

Zhihua Zhao,Shuhan Chen,Huiqin Li,Lan Wu,Zhigang Shao,Qilin Zou,Zhikun Wang

Triethylamine (TEA) is a colorless organic liquid known for its high volatility that poses significant irritation to the human respiratory tract; meanwhile, TEA can be released from decaying fish, which can be monitored by a gas sensor. However, conventional TEA gas sensors typically require high operating temperatures, leading to a substantial energy consumption. To address food safety concerns and promote environmental sustainability, the advancement of a TEA sensor that works at room temperature is urgently needed. In our work, an FeWO4/f-MWCNTs-3 chemoresistive gas sensor was fabricated by the hydrothermal method, integrating FeWO4 with multiwalled carbon nanotubes treated with mixed acids (f-MWCNTs). The sensor demonstrates superior performance, owing to its elevated specific surface area, total pore volume, and synergistic effect of p–p heterojunctions. FeWO4/f-MWCNTs-3 demonstrates excellent reproducibility, moisture resistance, stability, a minimal detection threshold of 1 ppm, and relatively rapid response/recovery times of 15/63 s. It attains a 113% response at 100 ppm of TEA at 25 °C. The applicability of FeWO4/f-MWCNTs-3 for assessing fish freshness via TEA concentration analysis from pomfret fish stored at ambient temperature for 14 days was validated, indicating its significance in fish freshness detection methodologies. Additionally, the gas-sensing mechanism of this sensor was further explored using density functional theory (DFT).

Na2BaB12O18F4: A Mixed Alkali/Alkaline-Earth Metal Fluorooxoborate with Two Unprecedented Interpenetrating Three-Dimensional B–O/F Anionic Networks and a Short Ultraviolet Cutoff Edge

Tuohetijiang Baiheti,Abudukadi Tudi,Minqiang Gai,Xuping Wang,Shujuan Han

Fluorooxoborates are promising yet largely untapped crystal materials for linear and nonlinear optical applications. The introduction of a strong electronegative F atom into an oxyboron anionic group offers a virtually unlimited chance for structural engineering and ultimately purposeful tuning of the macroscopic optical properties of the crystal. Herein, a new mixed alkali/alkaline-earth fluorooxoborate, Na2BaB12O18F4, was synthesized in a closed system. Na2BaB12O18F4 features a [B6O11F2] fundamental building unit (FBB), which polymerizes into two new (first example) independent interpenetrating three-dimensional (3D) B–O/F anionic networks constructed entirely from BO3 and BO3F units. Based on optical characterizations and the first-principles calculations, Na2BaB12O18F4 exhibits a moderate birefringence (0.054 @ 1064 nm) and a short ultraviolet (UV) cutoff edge (below 190 nm). The successful synthesis and characterization of Na2BaB12O18F4 may speed up the subsequent discovery of other mixed alkali/alkaline-earth metal fluorooxoborates.
