As typical persistent organic pollutants, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have aroused high environmental concern because of their toxicity and recalcitrant degradation. Here we report the visible-light-induced degradation of PBDEs with AgI–TiO2 (>420 nm). A series of nano-structured AgI–TiO2 particles were synthesized by a deposition–precipitation method and characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, BET and UV-Vis-DRS. The AgI–TiO2 hybrids showed high efficiency for degradation of PBDEs and excellent photostability in cyclic run experiments. The absorbance intensity and absorption ability of AgI–TiO2 hybrids and the properties of the solvents were found to greatly influence the efficiency of degradation of PBDEs. The 0.2-AgI–TiO2 (the mass ratio of Ag to P25 was about 20%) in CH3OH solution presented the highest reaction rate with 0.29 ± 0.02 h−1. Most interestingly, mechanistic pathways in the degradation of PBDEs were different under UV and visible light. Unlike the common single-electron transfer in the UV-TiO2 system, the debromination mechanism in the visible light/AgI–TiO2 system showed multi-electron transfer. The analysis of products showed that many different lower brominated congeners simultaneously appeared under visible light rather than being stepwise formed under UV. This implies that the special structure of AgI–TiO2 performs remarkably enhanced electron transfer, multi-electron transfer, and results in high photocatalytic activity. This research may provide a green and efficient method to remove halogenated pollutants by using visible light.

Hexagonal CePO 4 nanorods were synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method without the presence of surfactants and then characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ultraviolet-visible (UV–vis) absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. UV-light driven photocatalytic activities of hexagonal CePO 4 nanorods were detailedly demonstrated via degrading different organic dyes such as congo red (CR), organic rhodamine B (RB), methyl orange (MO) and methylene blue (MB) since these nanorods exhibit strong UV absorption with the cutoff edge of about 420 nm.

In this work, an intramolecular carbon nitride (CN)-based quaternary homojunction functionalized with pyridine rings is prepared via an in situ alkali-assisted copolymerization strategy of bulk CN and 2-aminopyridine for efficient visible light hydrogen generation. In the obtained structure, triazine-based CN (TCN), heptazine-based CN (HCN), pyridine unit incorporated TCN, and pyridine ring inserted HCN constitute a special multicomponent system and form a built-in electric field between the crystalline semiconductors by the arrangement of energy band levels. The electron-withdrawing function of the conjugated heterocycle can trigger the skeleton delocalization and edge induction effect. Highly accelerated photoelectron-hole transfer rates via multi-stepwise charge migration pathways are achieved by the synergistic effect of the functional group modification and molecular quaternary homojunction. Under the addition of 5 mg 2-aminopyridine, the resulting homojunction framework exhibits a significantly improved hydrogen evolution rate of 6.64 mmol g −1 h −1 with an apparent quantum efficiency of 12.27% at 420 nm. Further, the catalyst verifies its potential commercial value since it can produce hydrogen from various real water environments. This study provides a reliable way for the rational design and fabrication of intramolecular multi-homojunction to obtain high-efficient photocatalytic reactions.

Unbalanced electron-hole injection in perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) has always been a major stumbling block limiting device performance. Here we develop a heterointerface Coulomb enhancement strategy to efficiently promote electron injection between perovskite emitter and transport layer and thereby balance the electron-hole recombination equilibrium through manipulating defect-rich positive-charge centers induced Coulomb interactions in LiF interlayer. Through multiscale polarization response characterizations combined with capacitance-voltage and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, it is confirmed that diffusing holes trapped in LiF layer leads to the increased interfacial polarization. Moreover, the polarization response reversal and high-frequency-dependent dissipation sensitivity further corroborate the LiF-induced interfacial Coulomb enhancement mechanism. The universality of the concept is also successfully verified in devices with electron-only, hole-only, and PN structures. Consequently, the modified PeLEDs show a lower leakage current, along with a significant performance improvement by 1.9 times in external quantum efficiency (18.8%) and 5.7 times in luminance compared with control samples. This study provides a unique perspective to promote carrier transport balance by taking advantage of physical effects within interlayer.

Treating and recycling high concentration acetic acid in the exhaust water has long posed a challenge in industry. These wastes containing acetic acid are typically processed via basic neutralization, characterized by high acidity and resistance to degradation, which can bring potential economic burden and environmental hazards. Here we report a new photocatalytic conversion route for addressing high concentrations of acetic acid. This process transforms acetic acid into valuable succinic acid through dehydrogenative coupling. Additionally, the photocatalytic conversion of acetic acid exhibits structure sensitivity when employing Pt cocatalysts of varying sizes. Through inhibiting the undesirable H termination of active free radicals over small Pt atoms and clusters, the rate of undesired decarboxylation reactions can be decreased by 75 %. This effectively enhances the selectivity of the coupling product succinic acid by 2.1 times, achieving a succinic acid formation rate of 7.28 mmol/(g cat •h). This work offers a theoretical guidance for searching value-added reaction pathways of acetic acid, thereby establishing an innovative approach for high concentration exhaust acetic acid treatment and converting low value monocarboxylic molecules into valuable diacid polymerization monomers under a mild and green condition.

Objectives The low durability of composite resin restorations can be attributed to the degradation of the resin dentin bonding interface. Owing to the presence of hydrophilic components in the adhesive, the integrity of the resin dentin bonding interface is easily compromised, which, in turn, leads to a reduction in bond strength. The hydrophilic nature of the adhesive leads to water sorption, phase separation, and leaching of the resin component. Therefore, hydrophobic adhesives could effectively be used to stabilize the integrity and durability of the resin dentin bonding interface. Methods We synthesized a novel hydrophobic dentin adhesive by partially replacing bisphenol A glycidyl dimethacrylate (Bis-GMA) with a light-curable urushiol monomer. The properties of the produced adhesive, including the degree of conversion, viscosity, contact angle, water sorption/solubility, and mechanical strength, were comprehensively examined and compared to those of the commercially adhesive Adper Single Bond 2 as a positive control. The adhesive properties were determined using microtensile bond strength measurements, laser confocal microscopy, scanning electron microscopy observations, and nanoleakage tests. Finally, the novel adhesive was subjected to biocompatibility testing to determine its potential cytotoxicity. Results At a light-curable urushiol content of 20 %, the synthesized adhesive exhibited high degrees of conversion and hydrophobicity, low cytotoxicity, good mechanical properties, and outstanding adhesive strength. Conclusions The introduction of the light-curable urushiol into dentin adhesives can significantly enhance their hydrophobic, mechanical, and bonding properties, demonstrating potential to significantly improve restoration longevity. Clinical significance The integration of light-curable urushiol has endowed the experimental adhesives with several enhanced functionalities. These notable benefits underscore the suitability of this monomer for expanded applications in clinical practice.

Nitric oxide (NO) has received growing attention as an effective antibacterial agent with broad-spectrum activity and a low risk of resistance. However, it remains challenging to develop effective, controllable, and biocompatible NO-releasing materials. Here, we report a novel NO nanogenerator (AL-BNN6-PEG) self-assembled by lignin, a UV-absorbing and hydrophobic NO donor (N,N′-disec-butyl-N,N′-dinitroso-1,4-phenylenediamine, BNN6), and PEG-DSPE2000. It was discovered that upon visible light irradiation (450–460 nm), BNN6 can be decomposed by lignin within micellar nanoparticles via a photoinduced electron transfer mechanism in the aqueous medium. Lignin not only served as a sustainable carrier, enhancing the water dispersity of BNN6, but also acted as a biocompatible photosensitizer, triggering BNN6 decomposition with the concomitant release of NO. As a result, the micellar nanoparticles displayed superior antibacterial effects against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria upon visible light illumination. Moreover, MTT assay revealed the negligible cytotoxic effect of the micellar nanoparticles to the mouse fibroblast cells (L929). This research provides more insight into the BNN6 decomposition mechanism and demonstrates a straightforward, effective, and biocompatible strategy for controlled NO-mediated antibacterial applications.

The solar-powered photocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction is considered a promising alternative method for H2O2 production under mild reaction conditions. However, the intrinsic competitive pathway grossly inhibits the selectivity and final yield of H2O2 accompanying the loss of photogenerated electrons during the oxygen reduction reaction process. Herein, two-coordinate nitrogen (N2C) vacancy-rich g-C3N4 (DCN1.2) was developed by polymerization pyrolysis using the bottom-up strategy. DCN1.2 with a low-coordinated N2C-vacancy enabled an enhanced H2O2 production in a wide pH range. The optimized DCN1.2 demonstrated a H2O2 yield of 556.2 μmol·gcat–1·h–1 at pH = 10, which was approximately 3 times higher than that of pristine CN (202.7 μmol gcat–1·h–1). DFT calculations and photochemical experimental results revealed that N2C-vacancies induced the asymmetric electron distribution of DCN, thereby facilitating electron transfer and promoting the O2 adsorption/activation for H2O2 production. Additionally, EPR and situ FTIR measurements indicated that DCN1.2 could produce H2O2 via a sequential two-step single-electron pathway, thereby achieving efficient H2O2 production with good selectivity. This study provides guidance for the rational design of defect-engineering g-C3N4 catalysts for efficient photocatalytic H2O2 generation.

Relatively scant work was related to polynaphthalene (PN) and its derivatives because of the unique nonlinear optical properties which make PN and its derivatives owning potential applications in various domains. According to relevant studies, the pursuit for the synthesis of high quality PN films is a great challenge for the applications of PN. To achieve high quality polymer films, three bridged naphthalene derivatives were designed, and finally two crosslinked PN exhibiting space network were electrosynthesized, respectively, by direct anodic oxidation from 1,6-bis(naphthalen-2-yloxy)hexane and 1,4-bis((naphthalen-2-yloxy)methyl)benzene in mixed electrolyte of dichloromethane containing boron trifluoride diethyl etherate. Furthermore, as-formed conducting films were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, spectroscopic analysis, thermal analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. And the series of characterizations indicated that films hold high stability and good blue-light-emitting property. Meanwhile, these polymer films were smooth, shiny, and flexible easily being processed into various shapes by conventional mechanical methods. Consequently, these high quality PN films will facilitate their potential applications as blue-light-emitting materials in organic light-emitting diode. Because di(naphthalen-2-yl) terephthalate was difficult to electropolymerize, the effects of bridged spacers to polymerization were also discussed. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is one of the most aggressive and challenging subtypes with limited treatment options and poor prognosis. To overcome these obstacles, Ag-doped SnSe (ASS) nanosheets were used as photonic hyperthermia agents for treating TNBC. ASS featured a high photothermal-conversion efficiency and photon hyperthermia effect. Additionally, biosafety assessments, including hemolysis assays and histopathological analysis, confirmed that ASS was biosafety. These findings suggest that ASS, in synergy with the second near-infrared biowindow (NIR-II) light irradiation, offers a noninvasive, effective, and safe therapeutic strategy for TNBC. This innovative approach exemplifies the evolving landscape of TNBC treatment, where technology and biology converge to offer more precise and personalized therapies.

Highly efficient nanoarchitectures are of great interest for achieving precise chemotherapy with minimized adverse side effects in cancer therapy. However, a major challenge remains in exploring a rational approach to synthesize spatiotemporally selective vehicles for precise cancer chemotherapy. Here, we demonstrate a rational design of bifunctional light-activatable platinum nanocomplexes (PtNCs) that produce dually cooperative cancer therapy through spatiotemporally selective thermo-chemotherapy. The Pt4+-coordinated polycarboxylic nanogel is explored as the nanoreactor template, which is exploited to synthesize bifunctional PtNCs consisting of a zero-valent Pt0 core and a surrounding bivalent Pt2+ shell with tunable ratios through a facile and controllable reduction. Without light exposure, chemotherapeutic Pt2+ ions are tightly bound on the surface of PtNCs, efficiently reducing undesirable drug leakage and nonselective damage on normal tissues/cells. Upon light exposure, PtNCs generate much heat via photothermal conversion from the Pt0 core and simultaneously trigger a rapid release of chemotherapeutic Pt2+ ions, thereby leading to the spatiotemporally light-activatable synergistic effect of thermo-chemotherapy. Moreover, PtNCs show enhanced tumor accumulation through the heat-triggered hydrophilicity–hydrophobicity transition upon immediate light exposure after injection, dramatically facilitating in vivo tumor regression through their cooperative anticancer efficiency. This rational design of spatiotemporally activatable nanoparticles provides an insightful tool for precise cancer therapy.
