A synergistic membrane–solution strategy combining enlarged sub-nanoporous PI membrane with EDTA complexation achieves high Li + flux (73 mmol h -1 m -2 ) and exceptional Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity (351). • The EDTA-induced size and charge transformation of Mg 2+ enables effective electrostatic and steric rejection by negatively charged sub-nanopores, breaking the permeability–selectivity trade-off. • The system demonstrates robust separation performance (selectivity > 284) even at Mg 2+ /Li + ratio up to 60, with EDTA 4- being efficiently regenerated and reused over multiple cycles. Efficient extraction of lithium-ion from salt-lake brine remains a significant challenge, primarily due to the similar physicochemical properties of Li + and Mg 2+ , and the inherent trade-off between permeability and selectivity in conventional membrane processes. Herein, we propose a synergistic membrane–solution strategy that integrates an enlarged sub-nanoporous polyimide membrane (ESN-PI) with ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA 4- ) complexation to enhance the Li + flux and Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity simultaneously. The ESN-PI membrane, fabricated via heavy-ion irradiation and controlled alkaline etching, provides enlarged transport channels that significantly improve Li + permeation. Meanwhile, EDTA 4- selectively chelates Mg 2+ to form a bulky, negatively charged [EDTA-Mg] 2- complex, which is electrostatically repelled and sterically hindered by the negatively charged sub-nanopores, thereby greatly suppressing Mg 2+ transmembrane transport. The coupled system delivers a high Li + flux of up to 73 mmol h -1 m -2 and an exceptional Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity of 351. Notably, the separation performance remains robust (selectivity > 300) even at a high feed Mg 2+ /Li + ratio of 60, and EDTA 4- can be efficiently regenerated and reused over multiple cycles. This research utilized heavy ion irradiation technology to prepare a more economical cation exchange membrane. By coupling the membrane with the EDTA complexation strategy, it was able to resolve the contradiction between permeability and selectivity in the ion separation process based on the membrane, providing a promising strategy for extracting lithium from brines with high magnesium ion content. Polymer membranes are widely used for the extraction of lithium resources from salt-lake. The enlarged sub-nanoporous polyimide membranes (ESN-PI) combined with EDTA 4- to achieve efficient Li + /Mg 2+ separation. EDTA 4- can combine with Mg 2+ to form a bulky, negatively charged [EDTA-Mg] 2- complex. The lithium flux and Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity reaches 0.073 mol·h -1 ·m -2 and 351, respectively. This work demonstrates a viable and economically feasible route to decouple the permeability–selectivity trade-off in membrane-based ion separation, offering a promising strategy for lithium extraction from high-Mg 2+ brines. Hollow porous carbon fibers for Li-S battery electrodes were prepared by the KOH activation of carbon prepared from hollow polyacrylonitrile fibers. The fibers had a high specific surface area of 2 491 m 2 ·g −1 , a large pore volume of 1.22 cm 3 ·g −1 and an initial specific capacity of 330 mAh·g −1 at a current density of 1 C. To improve their electrochemical performance, the fibers were modified by treatment with hydrazine hydrate to prepare nitrogen-doped hollow porous carbon fibers with a specific surface area of 1 690 m 2 ·g −1 , a pore volume of 0.84 cm 3 ·g −1 and a high nitrogen content of 8.81 at%. Because of the increased polarity and adsorption capacity produced by the nitrogen doping, the initial specific capacity of the fibers was increased to 420 mAh·g −1 at a current density of 1 C.

Constructing a suitable charged surface layer of nanofiltration (NF) membrane is one of the key challenges to achieve efficient Li + /Mg 2+ separation performance with high Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio ( W Mg2+/Li+ ). Herein, we proposed a facile route, i.e., grafting the short chain amino-rich monomers (SCA, H(NHCH 2 CH 2 ) 1-4 -NH 2 ) instead of conventional amino-rich macro-monomers (ARM), to construct a separation layer with uniform positive charge on the surface of pristine polyamide (PA) NF membrane to achieve effective Li + /Mg 2+ separation. The SCA grafted NF membrane (PA-g-SCA) retained a more uniform distribution of positively charged groups on the PA layer compared with ARM grafted NF membrane. The SCA grafted NF membrane exhibited a high rejection of Mg 2+ and high permeation of Li + at the same time, leading to an extremely high separation factor for Li + /Mg 2+ of 130 even in the W Mg2+/Li+ of 200:1 in the feed, which greatly surpassed those reported. The pure water flux was 1.8 folds than that of the pristine NF membrane due to the hydrophilicity improvement. The results suggested that the distribution uniformity of positive charges could be the key to efficient Li + /Mg 2+ separation of the NF membrane. Our study provided a facile and robust route to design and construct high Li + /Mg 2+ separation performance NF membranes.

Lithium-carbon dioxide (Li-CO 2 ) batteries have attracted much attention due to their high theoretical energy density. However, due to the existance of lithium carbonate and amorphous carbon in the discharge products that are difficult to decompose, the battery shows low coulombic efficiency and poor cycle performance. Here, by adjusting the adsorption of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) on ruthenium (Ru) catalysts surface, this work reports an ultralow charge overpotential and long cycle life Li-CO 2 battery that consists of typical lithium metal, ternary molten salt electrolyte (TMSE), and Ru-based cathode. Experimental results show that the Ru catalysts deposited on quartz nanofiber (QF) can suppress the four-electron conversion of CO 2 to lithium carbonate (Li 2 CO 3 ). As a result, the battery shows a long-cycle-life of over 457 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 with a limited capacity of 500 mAh g −1 Ru . Remarkably, a recorded low discharge potential of ≈3.0 V has been achieved after 35 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 , with a charge potential retention of over 99%. Moreover, the battery can operate over 25 A g −1 and recover 96% potential. This battery technology paves the way for designing high-performance rechargeable Li-CO 2 batteries with carbon neutrality.

Nanofiltration (NF) membrane with high selectivity and permeance is important for recovering lithium from salt lake brine. In this work, sandwich-like NF membranes were prepared using polyamide (PA) as the interfacial polymerization (IP) layer, dopamine (DA) and zwitterion-g-C 3 N 4 as the composite interlayer and polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane as the substrate. Three NF membranes were prepared with different zwitterion-g-C 3 N 4 : M3 membrane modified with C 5 H 12 ClNO 2 -g-C 3 N 4 , M4 membrane modified with C 12 H 24 N 2 O 4 S-g-C 3 N 4 and M5 membrane modified with C 19 H 39 NO 2 -g-C 3 N 4 , and their physical and chemical properties, separation capacity, and antifouling behaviour were analyzed. The zwitterion-g-C 3 N 4 composite interlayer improves the hydrophilicity and pore structure of NF membranes. The water contact angle (CA) of M5 membrane is 25.5°and its pore size is 0.49 nm. M5 membrane shows a high retention rate of 96.66 % for Mg 2+ in mixed salt solution (Mg 2+ /Li + = 84) and performs well in salt lake brine with a rejection of 97.90 % to Mg 2+ . The flux recovery ratio (FRR) can be kept above 93 %. This study may give ideas for the preparation of composite NF membrane for water softening and lithium utilization.

Polymer solid-state electrolytes (PSSEs) are promising for solving the safety problem of Lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs). However, PSSEs with low modulus in nature are prone to be penetrated by lithium dendrites, resulting in short circuit of LMBs. Here, we design and prepare piezoelectric BaTiO 3 doped polyacrylonitrile (PAN@BTO) quasi-solid-state electrolytes (PQSSEs) by electrostatic spinning method to suppress dendritic growth. The piezoelectric polymer electrolytes are squeezed by nucleation and growth processes of Li dendrites, which can generate a piezoelectric electric field to regulate the deposition of Li + ions and eliminate lithium bud. Consequently, piezoelectric PAN@BTO PQSSEs enables highly stable Li plating/stripping cycling for over 2 000 h at 0.15 mA/cm 2 at room temperature (RT, 25 °C). Also, LiFePO 4 |PAN@BTO|Li full cells demonstrate excellent cycle performance (136.9 mA·h/g and 78% retention after 600 cycles at 0.5 C) at RT. Moreover, LiFePO 4 |PAN@BTO|Li battery show extremely high safety and can still work normally under high-speed impact (2 Hz, ∼30 kPa). We construct an in-situ cell monitoring system and disclose that the mechanism of suppressed lithium dendrite is originated from the generation of opposite piezoelectric potential and the feedback speed of intermittent piezoelectric potential signals is extremely fast.

The Mg 1- x Li x ZrTa 2 O 8- x /2 ( x = 0–0.07) ceramics were fabricated to investigate the effects of Li + heterovalent substitution for Mg 2+ . The site occupancy and existence of the Li + were examined based on Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package (VASP) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. Single phase solid solution with wolframite structure was identified in the whole region. Li + substitution reduced the densification temperature from 1475 °C to 1400 °C. Notably, the Q × f exhibited an obvious increase by up to 74 % from 41,844 GHz at x = 0–72,782 GHz at x = 0.05. The Q × f for x < 0.01 was largely dependent on the intrinsic loss originating from packing fraction, while as 0.01 ≤ x ≤ 0.05, it was dominated by extrinsic factors, especially the oxygen vacancy concentration. The corresponding dielectric constant ε r decreased in term of ionic polarizability. The variations of resonant frequency temperature coefficient τ f were explained from the views of [TaO 6 ] oxygen octahedral distortion and bond energy. A near-zero τ f was obtained for x = 0.05 composition, accompanied by ε r = 11.97, Q×f = 72,782 GH at 1450 °C. Li substitution was effective and inexpensive for MgZrTa 2 O 8 ceramic to realize dielectric properties enhancement and densification temperature optimization simultaneously.

As a novel two-dimensional (2D) layered material, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene has excellent electronic conductivity and strong polysulfides adsorption. Its potential for Li-S batteries has been well recoginised since it can compensate conductivity of sulfur and improve cycling stability simultaneously. However, like other 2D materials , the stacking feature of the MXene nanosheet greatly limits its advantages and applications. Herein, a sulfydryl-modified MXene - sulfur cathode is synthesized via simple hydrothermal and copolymerization reactions. Compared to the conventional physical absorption between MXene and polysulfide, it was found that a chemical modification of MXene offers a much robust structure with little stacking on MXene. During the discharge process high-order Li 2 S 4 intermediates were first formed but consumed immediately. The remaining polysulfides are only short chains of Li 2 S, Li 2 S 2 and Li 2 S 3 . This type of cathode can greatly suppress the “shuttle effect” by reducing the generation of soluble high-order polysulfides in the electrolyte, which is attributed to rapid capacity fading. As a result, the cathode achieves an excellent initial specific capacity of 1367 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 C. It also has a high first capacity of 880 mAh·g −1 and remains 715 mAh·g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 C, with a retention rate of 81.3%. Our work provides a new strategy for applying MXene in the Li-S battery field.

Li-O 2 batteries with extremely high specific energy density have been regarded as a kind of promising successor to current Li-ion batteries. However, the high charge overpotential for the decomposition of Li 2 O 2 discharge product reduces the energy efficiency and triggers a series of side reactions that cause the Li-O 2 batteries to have a limited lifetime. Herein, Co-doped C 3 N 4 (Co-C 3 N 4 ) photocatalysts were designed by an in situ thermal evaporation method to take advantage of the photo-assisted charging technology to conquer the shortcomings of Li-O 2 batteries encountered in the charge process. Different from the commonly used photocatalysts, the Co-C 3 N 4 photocatalysts perform well no matter with and without illumination, owing to the Co doping induced conductivity and electrocatalytic ability enhancement. This makes the Co-C 3 N 4 reduce the charge and discharge overpotentials and improve the cycling performance of Li-O 2 batteries (from 20 to 106 cycles) without illumination. While introducing illumination, the performance can be further improved: Charge voltage reduces to 3.3 V, and the energy efficiency increases to 84.84%, indicating that the Co-C 3 N 4 could behave as a suitable photocathode for Li-O 2 batteries. Besides, the low charge voltage and the continuous illumination together weaken the corrosion of the Li anode, making the long-term high-efficiency operation of Li-O 2 batteries no longer just extravagant hope.

Nickel (Ni)-rich layered oxides have high specific capacities and are inexpensive, but their synthesis and electrochemical performance continue to present difficulties. In this study, we investigated the effect of a dual conductive compound of dot-like Nb 12 WO 33 and film-like lithium boron oxide (Li-B-O; applied using a simple dry-coating method) on the Ni-rich oxide layer in Li batteries. The film-like Li-B-O homogeneous coating segregated the cathode from the electrolyte, which improved the initial efficiency and cycle stability, and the dot-like Nb 12 WO 33 provided a fast Li-ion transition channel, which improved the rate performance of the Ni-rich oxide layer. The modified cathode with dual conductive coating exhibited significantly improved electrochemical performance. Its discharge capacity was 225.6 mAh g −1 , with high initial efficiency of 92.73% in the voltage range of 3.0–4.3 V at 0.1 C, whereas that of the uncoated sample was 219.4 mAh g −1 , with an initial efficiency of 90.4%. The modified cathode had a discharge capacity of 179.1 mAh g −1 at 5 C, compared with that of 161.1 mAh g −1 for the uncoated sample; the capacity retention of the coated sample was 92.84% at 0.5 C after 50 cycles at 25 ℃, whereas that of the uncoated sample was only 81.41%. A similar strategy could be utilized to enhance the performance of other cathode materials .

A novel small organic molecule namely N,N’-bis(2-anthraquinone)-dihydrophenazine (DAQ-DPZ, 270 mAh/g) with n-p-n molecular heterojunction configuration is designed as the bipolar electrode material for Li-dual-ion batteries. To delay the dissolution for small-molecule organic electrodes, DAQ-DPZ is further coated by a protective carbon layer (DAQ-DPZ@C) through the process called surface self-carbonization. As expected, the resulting DAQ-DPZ@C can show the peak discharge capacity of 269 mAh/g and high median potential of 2.62 V in 1.6–4.4 V (vs. Li + /Li), corresponding to the peak energy density of 704 Wh kg −1 in Li-dual-ion half cells. Furthermore, DAQ-DPZ@C in the symmetric Li-dual-ion batteries can deliver the peak discharge capacity of 88 mAh/g cathode and the peak energy density of 113 Wh kg -1 cathode , stably running for over 5000 cycles. To the best of our knowledge, these results are the top ones for small-molecule organic bipolar electrodes in the symmetric Li-dual-ion batteries.

Positively charged nanofiltration membranes hold great potential in Li + /Mg 2+ separation, but their application in alkaline solutions, such as alkaline salt-lake brines has not been reported. Herein, inspired by the arginine's unique structure and biological function, we explore superstrong basic triaminoguanidine (TG) molecule as aqueous monomer to fabricate positively charged polyamide nanofiltration membranes for Li + /Mg 2+ separation. With the Li + /Mg 2+ mass ratios of 1:50 and 1:120, at pH 9.6, the separation factors (S Li,Mg ) of membranes reach 31.8 and 20.9. Meanwhile, at pH 5.6, the S Li,Mg are 46.4 and 36.4, which are the ever-reported highest value and such high S Li,Mg can be well retained in the pH range of 5.6–8.6. The superior Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity stems from the superhigh protonation capacity of guanidine groups in a broad pH range.
