To boost the visible light catalytic performance of typical metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials (MIL-68(In)-NH 2 ), a novel stable Z-scheme Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 /MIL-68(In)-NH 2 plasmonic photocatalyst was constructed by electrostatic attraction, co-precipitation reaction, and in-situ photoreduction reaction methods for the first time. The photocatalytic activities of the photocatalysts are systematically explored by the photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) and reduction of Cr(VI) under visible light. Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 /MIL-68(In)-NH 2 displays the best photocatalytic performance among the as-prepared photocatalysts. The rate constant of BPA degradation on Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 /MIL-68(In)-NH 2 is 0.09655 min −1 , which is better than many reported photocatalytic materials. It also achieved a maximum rate constant of 0.02074 min −1 for Cr(VI) reduction. The boosted photocatalytic performance is due to the improved absorption caused by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), effective interface charge transfer and separation, and more reactive sites provided by the large specific surface area. Besides, the photocatalytic degradation pathway of BPA is concluded according to GC-MS analysis. Finally, a more reasonable Z -scheme mechanism is speculated and verified through a series of characterizations and simulations, such as time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy (TRPL), electron spin resonance (ESR), and finite difference time domain (FDTD) method.

As an emerging class of nitrogenous disinfection by-products, halonitromethanes have caused public health concerns owing to their high toxicity. More and more attention has been paid to the new materials and technologies for the removal of halonitromethanes. In this study, a novel material, nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) supported on MIL-96 (nZVI@MIL-96) with favorable stability and reusability, was synthesized and applied to the adsorption-degradation of trichloronitromethane (TCNM) in the water. The results revealed that almost all the TCNM could be removed under 20 mg/L nZVI@MIL-96 dosage with a wide temperature range. The optimum mass ratio of nZVI to MIL-96 was 1:2, and the TCNM adsorption-degradation followed a pseudo-first-order model. The coexisting ions, such as SO 4 2– , PO 4 3– , and NO 3 – , with high concentration brought adverse effects on the removal of TCNM; however, the effects of Cl – and CO 3 2– were insignificant. The concentrations of aluminum and iron ions in water were all within the standard value after adsorption with the nZVI@MIL-96. The degradation mechanism of TCNM by nZVI@MIL-96 included two steps, namely, adsorption and degradation, and methylamine was the terminal dechlorination and denitration products. In a word, the as-prepared nZVI@MIL-96 nanoparticles demonstrated the capabilities as a material of adsorption-degradation of TCNM in the water.

Abstract Using MIL-101(Fe) as the source of carbon and Fe, a magnetic porous carbon (MPC) material with Fe 3 C nanoparticles encapsulated in porous carbon was prepared through one-pot pyrolysis under N 2 atmosphere. With MPC as adsorption material, a stir bar sorptive-dispersive microextraction (SBSDME) method was proposed to extract and preconcentrate sulfonamides (SAs) prior to HPLC-DAD determination. To investigate their extraction ability, different MPC materials were prepared under different carbonization temperatures (600, 700, 800, 900, and 1000 °C). The material prepared under 900 °C (MPC-900) exhibited the highest extraction ability for SAs. The as-prepared MPC materials were also characterized by Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, zeta potential, and other techniques. The main parameters that affect extraction were systematically studied. Under optimal conditions, favorable linearity ( R 2 ≥ 0.9938) and detection limits (0.02–0.04 ng mL −1 ) of sulfonamides were obtained. The average recoveries for spiked milk and lake water samples ranged from 76.9 to 109% and from 75.4 to 118% with RSDs of 3.10–9.63% and 1.71–11.3%, respectively. Sulfameter and sulfisoxazole were detected in milk sample. Sulfisoxazole was detected in the lake water sample. The MPC-900 material demonstrated excellent reusability. It can be reused 24 times with peak areas having no obvious decline. The method can be applied to extract ultra-trace compounds in complex sample matrices. Graphical abstract

With an S-shaped water sorption isotherm and high vapor uptake, as one of the famous metal organic frameworks (MOFs), MIL-100(Fe) (MIL stands for Materials of Institute Lavoisier) has been considered as a very promising candidate for adsorption heat pumps. Usually, MIL-100(Fe) is synthesized by a hydrothermal method under harsh synthesis conditions, such as high temperature and vapor pressure. In this study, in the absence of any solvent, a novel facile MIL-100(Fe) synthetic strategy, which used the dry gel conversion method, was developed. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns showed that the new dry gel conversion technology could expediently synthesize MIL-100(Fe) with a low reaction temperature (140 °C) and high yield (85%), which is superior to the hydrothermal method with reaction temperature of 160 °C and yield of 76%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images illuminated that, compared with the conventional synthesized MIL-100(Fe) in the liquid aqueous solution, the new process synthesized one in the dry gel state exhibited a smaller crystal size (about 50 nm) due to the confined growth of the crystals. The pore analysis indicated that the MIL-100(Fe) synthesized by both processes had a similar hierarchical porous structure with the mesopore and micropore; however, compared with the traditional synthesized adsorbent, the new technology synthesized one possessed a larger pore volume due to the formation of the extra mesopores from the interconnection of the nanocrystals. The static adsorption curve exhibited that the water vapor adsorption capacity of MIL-100(Fe) synthesized by the new process was a little higher than the one synthesized by the traditional hydrothermal method. Moreover, it had a smaller desorption activation energy and better cycle stability.

Hydrogen production by photocatalysis under visible light irradiation is a pivotal means of obtaining hydrogen. In this study, Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S was studied to have optimal hydrogen production performance among different zinc-cadmium ratios of Zn x Cd 1-x S, and a series of Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/MIL-125-NH 2 (Ti) composites with different MIL-125-NH 2 (Ti) contents were prepared by simple ultrasonic method. When the percentage of addition of MIL-125-NH 2 (Ti) was 40%, the optimum hydrogen production rate was 92,498 μmol h −1 g −1 , and the photocatalytic activity was still stable even after 16 h. The mechanism investigations demonstrated that this excellent activity was owing to enhanced visible light absorption intensity, extremely efficient electron transfer and proper conduction band position. This work provides new insights into highly efficient and stable photocatalyst in hydrogen production from water without noble metal doping.

Graphical With a sense of selectivity : the metal-organic framework/reduced graphene oxide composite MIL-101(Cr)/rGO is prepared via a simple hydrothermal method. The electrochemical sensor based on the composite shows low detection limits and wide linearity ranges for the determination of metronidazole, Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ , and shows excellent selectivity, reproducibility and stability. In this work, a Cr-based MOF (MIL-101(Cr))/reduced grapheme oxide(rGO) electrocatalyst was prepared through a one-pot hydrothermal method. The obtained composite was characterized via scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and other standard techniques. Electrochemical methods were adopted to study the electrocatalytic ability of the composite. The results imply that, compared to the single components, it exhibits higher electrocatalytic activity for the reduction of metronidazole and stripping of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ . Optimizing the ratio of MIL-101(Cr) and rGO, an electrochemical sensor was prepared using MIL-101(Cr)/rGO-20 and used for detection of metronidazole, Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ , respectively. The linear range for metronidazole can be divided in two parts, i. e. from 0.5 to 200 μM and from 200 to 900 μM. The limit of detection is 0.24 μM (S/N=3, n=10). Likewise, it also exhibits a wide linear range from 0.05 to 6.0 μM for the detection of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ . The corresponding detection limits are found to be 5.2 nM and 3.0 nM (S/N=3, n=10), respectively. The proposed sensor also possesses superb selectivity, reproducibility, stability and can be applied to detect real samples with desired recovery rates. In addition, the possible reduction mechanism of metronidazole and adsorption mechanism of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ were further discussed simply in this work.

A facile and efficient strategy is developed to modify aptamers on the surface of the magnetic metal-organic framework MIL-101 for the rapid magnetic solid-phase extraction of ochratoxin A. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to create a robust aptamer-modified magnetic MIL-101 with covalent bonding for the magnetic separation and enrichment of ochratoxin A. The saturated adsorption of ochratoxin A by aptamer-modified magnetic MIL-101 was 7.9 times greater than that by magnetic metal-organic framework MIL-101 due to the former's high selective recognition as well as good stability. It could be used for extraction more than 12 times with no significant changes in the extraction efficiency. An aptamer-modified magnetic MIL-101-based method of magnetic solid-phase extraction combined with ultra high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry was developed for the determination of trace ochratoxin A with limit of detection of 0.067 ng/L. Ochratoxin A of 4.53–13.7 ng/kg was determined in corn and peanut samples. The recoveries were in the range 82.8–108% with a relative standard deviation ( n = 5) of 4.5–6.5%. These results show that aptamer-modified magnetic MIL-101 exhibits selective and effective enrichment performance and have excellent potential for the analysis of ultra-trace targets from complex matrices.

The application of the metal–organic framework (MOF) MIL-53(Fe) as a novel stationary phase for reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) separation of positional isomers is described for the first time. Under the optimized conditions, baseline separation of xylene, dichlorobenzene, chlorotoluene and nitroaniline isomers was achieved on the MIL-53(Fe) packed column within a short time. The retention mechanisms of these isomers on the MIL-53(Fe) packed column were discussed in detail, and a typical reverse-phase behavior can describe the results. The thermodynamic characteristics of the HPLC separation of positional isomers were also evaluated. It was confirmed that the HPLC separation of positional isomers was controlled by the Gibbs free energy change (ΔG). In addition, reverse-phase HPLC separation of the tested isomers was also carried on MIL-53(Al, Cr) packed columns to investigate the influence of the metal centre of the MIL-53 framework on their chromatographic behaviors. The results showed that the MIL-53(Fe) packed column exhibited better separation performance than the MIL-53(Al, Cr) packed columns. Moreover, the MIL-53(Fe) packed column also gave efficient HPLC separation of alkylbenzene and naphthalene, aniline compounds and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These successful applications suggest the potential of MIL-53(Fe) as a novel stationary phase for efficient reverse-phase HPLC separation.

Graphical Be more active: A new strategy is proposed to construct the ionic liquid, polyoxometalate (POM), and metal–organic framework (MOF) composite. POM bridges the gap between the ionic liquid and the carrier (MOF); thus, the heteropolyanion-based ionic liquid can be encapsulated within the cages of MIL-100 (MIL=Materials of Institut Lavoisier) through anion exchange. The POM–ionic-liquid-functionalized MOF demonstrates high catalytic activity for the esterification of oleic acid with ethanol and is stable in the liquid-phase reaction, with no obvious leaching of the active component. A new strategy was proposed to construct the ionic liquid, polyoxometalate (POM), and metal–organic framework (MOF) composite. The POM-based MOF was synthesized by using the direct hydrothermal method. The sulfonic acid group-functionalized ionic liquid was used for further modification of the hybrid material to realize the encapsulation of the heteropolyanion-based ionic liquid within the cages of the MOF. The catalysts were characterized by using XRD, N 2 adsorption–desorption, FTIR, SEM, TEM, elemental analysis, and TGA. The results indicated that the heteropolyanion-based ionic liquid had been successfully encapsulated within the cages and the structure of MIL-100 (MIL=Materials of Institut Lavoisier) remained intact. The POM–ionic-liquid-functionalized MOF, with high content of the active component, had both Lewis and Brønsted acid sites, which led to high catalytic activity for the esterification of oleic acid with ethanol. The esterification reaction conditions were optimized by using response surface methodology (RSM), and the corresponding conversion of oleic acid reached 94.6 %. The catalyst could be easily recovered and reused six times without significant loss of activity.

A novel highly electrochemiluminescence (ECL) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been successfully synthesized by combining CdSe quantum dots (QDs) and MIL-101 in one step by facile hydrothermal method. The as-prepared MIL-101-CdSe nanocomposites combine a high ECL activity and sensing selectivity derived from CdSe and the highly selective adsorption and efficient accumulation performance of MOFs. The selective accumulation effect of MOFs can greatly amplify the sensing signal and specificity of the ECL probe. The resulting nanocomposites were applied to develop an ultrasensitive ECL immunosensor for detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). This ECL immunosensor has a sensitive response to CEA in a linear range of 10 −12 mg mL −1 –10 −4 mg mL −1 with a detection limit of 0.33 fg mL −1 . The developed ECL immunosensor shows high sensitivity, good stability, specificity, and excellent reproducibility, and can be used for detection of real samples, which providing potential application in clinical detection.

MIL-126(Fe) shows great potential for aqueous phase drug adsorption due to its permanent porosity and easy modification. Herein, we utilized the ligand installation method to introduce two ligands, 2-amino terephthalic acid (NH 2 -BDC) and 2-nitro terephthalic acid (NO 2 -BDC), into MIL-126(Fe) to prepare MIL-126(Fe)-NH 2 and MIL-126(Fe)-NO 2 , respectively. Various analytical tools were used to confirm the successful installation of the 1, 4-phthalic acid (BDC) series of ligands, as well as the successful introduction of amino (-NH 2 ) and nitro (-NO 2 ) groups. The presence of both -NH 2 and -NO 2 groups improved the adsorption of TC by the adsorbent material, with -NH 2 groups having a stronger influence on the enhancement. The experimental results indicated that MIL-126(Fe)-NH 2 had the highest adsorption performance at the optimal pH of 7, achieving a static adsorption capacity of 326.5 mg/g, which was about twice the adsorption capacity of the original MIL-126(Fe). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) determined that the adsorption of TC by MIL-126(Fe)-NH 2 relies mainly on π-π interaction and Fe-N coordination bonds. Furthermore, the higher adsorption capacity of MIL-126(Fe)-NH 2 can be attributed to the O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds interaction between -NH 2 and the phenolic hydroxyl group (Ph-OH) in the TC molecule.

Achieving efficient phosphorus recovery and reuse from wastewater presents formidable challenges. In this study, a synergistic adsorption photocatalysis process was successfully constructed. 0.1Bi-MIL-101-NH 2 showed the maximum phosphorus adsorption performance of 112 mg/g. After phosphorus adsorption, photoelectrochemical measurements confirmed that the photoelectric properties of the 0.1Bi-MIL-101-NH 2 -P sample was improved, and the degradation efficiency of SMX was increased by 20 % within 120 min. Meanwhile, the mineralization rate reached 91 %. The incorporation of Bi significantly enhanced the adsorption energy of the 0.1Bi-MIL-101-NH 2 sample. Notably, the presence of phosphorus on the surface of 0.1Bi-MIL-101-NH 2 -P enhanced the adsorption of water molecules by the material, thereby augmenting the generation of •OH. •O 2 - and •OH played dominant roles in the photodegradation of SMX. Finally, the degradation pathways of intermediates were further studied by Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and LC-MS analysis. This study provides a new avenue for phosphorus recovery and organic pollutant degradation.
