Molybdenum doped graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) catalysts were prepared by a simple pyrolysis method using melamine and ammonium molybdate as precursors. The characterization results indicated that the obtained Mo-doped g-C 3 N 4 catalysts had worm-like mesostructures with higher surface area. Introduction of Mo species can effectively extend the spectral response property and reduce the recombination rate of photogenerated electrons and holes. CO 2 photocatalytic reduction tests showed that the Mo-doped g-C 3 N 4 catalysts exhibited considerably higher activity (the highest CO and CH 4 yields of 887 and 123 μmol g − 1 -cat., respectively, after 8 h of UV irradiation.) compared with pure g-C 3 N 4 from melamine.

NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) and La-, Mo- or W-doped NiFe-LDH microparticles (NiFeX-LDH, X = La, Mo, W) were synthesized via the co-precipitation method. Their adsorption characteristics were evaluated by the removal of methyl orange (MO) and hexavalent chromium (Cr6+). The effects of the metal ion doping type, doping concentration (0–3at%), pH and temperature on the MO adsorption properties were systematically studied. The results show that W-doped NiFe-LDH exhibits superior MO removal capacity compared to undoped or La- or Mo-doped NiFe-LDH at the same 1at% doping level, which is attributed to the increased layer charge density and strong affinity for the π-electron systems of MO molecules. The NiFeW-LDH-1at% sample demonstrated the best MO adsorption performance within the W-doping range of 0–3at%, achieving a superior adsorption capability of 666.67 mg/g with a significantly shorter equilibrium time (10–120 min) compared to the similar LDH. NiFeW-LDH-1at% showed promising reusability, with its adsorption efficiency remaining 78.3% of its initial level after five adsorption–desorption cycles. The MO uptake onto NiFeX-LDH was attributed to the combined effect of anion exchange and the attraction of layer charge. In addition, the adsorption of NiFeW-LDH-1at% matched well with the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating a monolayer and chemical adsorption. Furthermore, NiFeW-LDH-1at% effectively adsorbed of Cr2O72−in the aqueous solution, revealing that W doping significantly enhances Cr(VI) removal performance. The maximum theoretical adsorption capacity onto NiFeW-LDH-1at% reached 63.25 mg/g, which was notably higher than that of the pristine NiFe-LDH adsorbent (53.56 mg/g). Overall, the W-doped NiFe-LDH material, as a low-cost and highly efficient adsorbent, shows great potential for wastewater treatment application.

Amorphous tungsten trioxide (a-WO 3 ) films were prepared on ITO conductive glass via electrodeposition and subsequently crystallized to obtain crystalline WO 3 (c-WO 3 ) films by heating a-WO 3 . A dual-phase stacked WO 3 film was fabricated by covering Mo-a-WO 3 film onto c-WO 3 /ITO substrate using electrodeposition and thermal-assisted electrodeposition methods, respectively. Optimization of electrochromic performance was achieved by varying Mo doping levels (0∼5 atom%). Results demonstrate that appropriate Mo doping (3 atom%) enhances the electrochromic properties of a-WO 3 films. Mo doping introduced structural distortions that reduced energy barriers and enhanced ion mobility, leading to improved electrochemical and electrochromic properties. The intermediate c-WO 3 layer improves adhesion between a-WO 3 top film and ITO glass substrate, while the porous structure of a-WO 3 layer increases the number of active sites for electrochromic reactions. Mo3-a-WO 3 /c-WO 3 dual-phase stacked film with doping 3 atom% Mo shows an optical modulation range of 83.4 % at 633 nm, a coloration efficiency of 74.3 cm 2 /C, rapid response time (bleaching/coloration: 3.4 s/6.1 s), and 86.6 % retention of its maximum current density after 2000 cycles, respectively. The high oxidation ion diffusion coefficient (3.53 × 10 −10 cm 2 /s) and reduction diffusion coefficient (1.55 × 10 −10 cm 2 /s) were also observed. This dual-phase stacked film shows significant improvements in electrochromic performance due to the synergistic effects between the dual phases and Mo-doping. Electrochromic device (ECD) assembled with Mo3-a-WO 3 /c-WO 3 dual-phase films as the working electrode, ITO glass as the counter electrode, and 1 mol/L LiClO4/PC solution as the electrolyte exhibited an optical modulation range of 74.2 % and response time (bleaching/ coloring) of 6.8 s/3.7 s. These findings confirm that ECD with Mo-a-WO 3 /c-WO 3 dual-phase films offer excellent electrochromic performance.

NiCo layered double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH)/ZIF-67 was in situ grown on the surface of Ni foam (NF) through hydrothermal method and subsequent solution growth method. The ZIF-67 was then hydrothermally converted into hydroxide in the presence of Mo and Ni salts for the preparation of Mo-doped NiCo-LDH (NiCoMo-LDH), and the doping of Mo endowed the NiCo-LDH with more active sites. The obtained NiCoMo-LDH showed a unique multi-dimensional “lollipop” nanostructure, which was then optimized through electrochemical reconstruction in KOH solution. During the electrochemical reconstruction, rich oxygen vacancies were generated in the NiCoMo-LDH via continuous doping/de-doping of hydroxyl ions (OH − ). Moreover, the crystallinity of the NiCoMo-LDH was greatly lowered after the electrochemical reconstruction, resulting in the generation of internal disorders and effective exposure of active sites. Owing to the abundant active sites, variable valence states, multi-dimensional nanostructure as well as rich oxygen vacancies, the electrochemical reconstructed NF@NiCoMo-LDH (ER-NF@NiCoMo-LDH) showed superior electrochemical performances. Finally, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was fabricated by using the ER-NF@NiCoMo-LDH as cathode and NF supported active carbon as anode, which had a high energy density of 0.32 mWh cm −2 (at 1.60 mW cm −2 ) and a nearly 100 % coulombic efficiency. The ASC could be used to power light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for a long time.

Bacterial infections considerably limit the success of scaffold transplantation. CuO 2 may generate hydroxyl radicals through a self-cascade catalytic process, which is effective for sterilization. However, reducing CuO 2 -derived Cu + ions to Cu° can lead to a decline in catalytic activity. To overcome these limitations, we anchored CuO 2 onto MoS 2 to establish stable Cu-S-Mo interfacial sites. The CuO 2 /MoS 2 nanozyme was fabricated using a low-temperature co-precipitation technique and introduced into poly- l -lactic acid scaffolds using selective laser sintering. The Cu-S-Mo interfacial sites showed a triad of functions that synergistically enhanced catalytic performance. These sites stabilized the Cu atoms, augmented catalytic activity by facilitating efficient electron transfer through the Mo 4+ /Mo 6+ redox couple, and improved the conduction of heat derived from the photothermal response of MoS 2 to the Cu catalyst. The synergistic action of chemodynamic and photothermal therapy, mediated by the Cu-S-Mo sites, resulted in remarkable antibacterial efficacy, with 92.3 % and 93.5 % inhibition rates against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli , respectively. Experimental evidence and simulations demonstrated that Cu-S-Mo structure stabilized the Cu atoms and improved electron transfer via interatomic charge transfer. These results highlight the potential of the CuO 2 @MoS 2 /PLLA scaffold in eliminating bacterial infections.

Tuning the electron distribution of metal single-atom active sites via bimetallic clusters is an effective way to enhance their hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity, but remains a great challenge. A biochar-based electrocatalyst (BCMoMn800-2) with both MnN4 active sites and Mo2C/Mn7C3 clusters was synthesized using in situ enriched Mo/Mn biomass as a precursor to trigger the HER. Various characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results indicated that the presence of Mo2C/Mn7C3 clusters in BCMoMn800-2 effectively induced the redistribution of charges at MnN4 sites, reducing the energy of H* activation during the HER. In 0.5 M H2SO4, the overpotential was 27.4 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and the Tafel slope was 31 mV dec−1, and its electrocatalytic performance was close to that of Pt/C. The electrocatalyst also exhibited excellent electrocatalytic stability and durability. This work might provide a new strategy for solid waste recycling and constructing efficient HER electrocatalysts.

It is challenging to produce soft polymer materials with high surface area and nanoscale morphology that can be used for continuous flow water treatment in a processable, versatile, and stable manner. Here, we manufactured a processable Ag@CMPA-bph and used it to treat pollutants in wastewater at continuous flow conditions. The aerogel was prepared by a simple reduction method of CMP matrix and Ag metal precursors. Thermogravimetric analysis and electron microscopy showed that the aerogel had excellent thermal stability and distribution of fine Ag nanoparticles. The synthesized aerogel inherits the controllable properties of the CMP matrix and can be tailored to a specific shape for installation into the water treatment unit. In continuous flow conditions, this aerogel shows excellent catalytic activity to efficiently treat the combined pollutant containing p- nitrophenol and methyl orange ( p- NP&MO), which can reach a removal rate of more than 99 % at the flow rate of 0.6 L h -1 . Furthermore, the Ag@CMPA-bph can also be used for continuous flow treatment of pollutants in river water sample and shows robust anti-pollution load capacity and catalytic activity.

Long-term corrosion profile of molybdenum was studied in three different simulated body fluids up to 28 days, compared with magnesium, zinc, and iron from the perspective of biodegradable metals (bio-metals). Their corrosion rate, mode, products and surface characteristics were comprehensively fathomed. Strikingly, Mo showed progressively advantageous long-term corrosion behavior with the smallest corrosion rate, and most importantly, more uniform mode, as compared with the other three bio-metals. It also performed bilaterally under the simulated inflammatory and bovine serum protein added conditions, with different corrosion progressions. These findings provide an optimistic outlook in opting molybdenum as a new type of bio-metal.

The chemical upgrade of the waste polyester coating on the surface of aluminum cans to value-added products can not only decrease the release of toxic substances, but also improve the quality of aluminum in the recycling process. In this study, different types of zeolite molecular sieve catalysts loaded with Ni, Mo and Co were synthesized, and utilized in the rapid catalytic pyrolysis of polyester coating. Among them, the Ni/ZSM-5 achieved the maximum aromatic compounds yield of 68.43 % at 600 ℃. A series of characterization results demonstrated that the embedding of transition metals (like Ni) could promote the cyclization and aromatization of products through deoxidation and dehydrogenation reactions by changing the pore structure and increasing total acid content (Brønsted and Lewis acids) of the ZSM-5 molecular sieve. Meanwhile, the thermodynamics of polyester coating during catalytic pyrolysis was studied by thermogravimetric method. The average activation energy of Ni/ZSM-5 catalytic pyrolysis of polyester coating is 238.65 kJ/mol. Furthermore, even after being reused for over 5 cycles, the catalyst can still maintain a relatively high yield of aromatic compounds (exceeding 60 %). Finally, the mechanism for aromatic compounds formation from Ni-modified ZSM-5 in-situ catalyzed polyester coating pyrolysis was proposed. This work provided useful ideas for the subsequent treatment of solid wastes.

Fe-based diamond -composites exhibit considerable potential for applications owing to their excellent mechanical and wear properties. However, the weak interfacial bonding between the Fe-based matrix and diamond particles has consistently limited their overall performance, adversely affecting the working efficiency of diamond tools. In this study, a Mo-B-C coating was pre-coated on the diamond surface. During the sintering process, the in-situ gradient chemical reaction between Fe and Mo-B-C coating resulted in the formation of a biomimetic ‘brick-mud’ interfacial structure consisting of Mo 2 FeB 2 , Mo 2 BC, and amorphous carbon layers. The “brick-mud” structure, combining soft and hard phases, enhanced the interfacial toughness by effectively deflecting, branching, and prolonging interfacial cracks. Additionally, the transitional diffusion of Fe within the interface layer helpd alleviate the interfacial stress concentration and suppress diamond graphitization. As a result, the optimization of interface bonding contributed to a 26.1 % increase in bending strength and a 156 % enhancement in abrasive ratio of the Fe-based diamond composites, offering a novel strategy for interfacial modification in Fe-based diamond tools.

Molybdenum carbide has emerged as a promising candidate for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to its Pt-like electronic properties and stability. However, it suffers from strong hydrogen adsorption and particle aggregation, limiting its catalytic efficiency. Herein, we present a facile one-step pyrolysis strategy using biomass-derived chitosan as a dual-functional carbon/nitrogen source to synthesize nitrogen-doped carbon-supported Mo/Mo 2 C heterojunctions. The chitosan-derived porous carbon matrix prevents nanoparticle agglomeration, while nitrogen doping enhances conductivity. Remarkably, theoretical and experimental analyses reveal that the active sites are not the heterojunctions themselves but the adjacent carbon matrix activated by interfacial electronic effects, achieving near-optimal hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔG H* = 0.01 eV). The optimized catalyst demonstrates outstanding HER performance, requiring only 97.7 mV overpotential to deliver 10 mA cm - ² in alkaline media. This work provides a cost-effective synthesis method alongside novel design principles for high-performance non-precious metal HER catalysts.

Selective oxidation of cyclohexane (CHA) to KA-oil (cyclohexanol/cyclohexanone) is an important reaction in the chemical industry, which is constrained by high energy consumption and low selectivity. In this study, Mo-doped mesoporous TiO2 (Mo-MT) has been successfully synthesized via calcinating MIL-125(Ti) doped with molybdenum acetylacetonate. A series of characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the doped Mo not only decreases the band gap from 3.02 eV (MT) to 2.71 eV (Mo-MT-2) and enhances efficiencies in charge separation and photogenerated carrier transfer but also directly reduces O2 to Mo-η2-O2 peroxo on Mo-MT-2, achieving a 3.2 times higher yield of KA-oil (62.7 μmol) than that by P25 and a high selectivity toward KA-oil of 99.9% under visible-light irradiation. Meanwhile, electron shuttling of benzoquinone facilitates electron transfer from CHA to O2, thus significantly enhancing the KA-oil yield from 62.7 to 431.0 μmol. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance analyses confirm the electron-shuttling roles of benzoquinone in H-abstraction and H-transfer during selective photooxidation of CHA by Mo-MT-2. DFT calculations further reveal that the benzoquinone-hydroquinone/semiquinone-benzoquinone cycle shuttles electrons from CHA to Mo-η2-O2 peroxo on the surface of Mo-MT-2, thus facilitating H-abstraction from CHA to form C6H11·, coupled with the formation of H2O2. The produced C6H11· then eventually reacts with O2 to form KA-oil. This study enriches our understanding of the importance of peroxo species and electron shuttles in selective photooxidation of C(sp3)–H.
