Supermolecular assembly networks functionalized MXene toward fire-resistant thermoplastic polyurethane nanocomposites

Nie Chenxin,Yang Jian,Deng Guojun,Feng Yuezhan,Shi Yongqian

A new N–P–Cu containing supermolecular assembly network (MPCSN) was fabricated with titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) nanosheets through intermolecular forces, and then, the flame-retardant thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) nanocomposites were synthesized by melt blending. The obtained results of the TPU/Ti 3 C 2 T x -MPCSN system indicated that the temperature corresponding to T 5% of TPU nanocomposites by adding 2% Ti 3 C 2 T x or 2% MPCSN decreased to 269.1 and 311.5 °C, respectively. Simultaneously, a well dispersion of the loading of 1.0 mass% Ti 3 C 2 T x -MPCSN was found in TPU matrix. Accordingly, the thermal stability of TPU can be found to be substantially improved in the thermogravimetric analysis, which was embodied in the mass loss of TPU/Ti 3 C 2 T x -MPCSN-1.0 reached up to 8.47 mass%. Moreover, the cone calorimeter tests revealed that the peak of heat release rate, the total heat release, carbon monoxide production rate and total carbon monoxide yield of the TPU nanocomposite were prominently diminished by 16.1%, 37.5%, 18.8% and 37.6%, respectively. This provides clues to the flame-retardant mechanism of TPU nanocomposites: The modified Ti 3 C 2 T x is combined with MPCSN through a cross-linked network grown on the surface of the carbon layer, which not only prevents the leakage of combustible gas, but also catalyzes the formation of the carbon layer. This work demonstrates a novel design for improved Ti 3 C 2 T x with supramolecularly assembled networks to reduce potential fire risk in practical TPU applications, applying to applications in polymer materials.

TiO2 Nanosheets/Ti3C2Tx MXene 2D/2D Composites for Excellent Microwave Absorption

Xiaohui Sun,Xueying Zhao,Xuyang Zhang,Guohua Wu,Xianhui Rong,Xiangwei Wang

Ti3C2Tx MXene is a potential microwave absorption material due to its unique physical and chemical properties. However, the impedance mismatch of MXene results in low microwave absorption. In this work, 2D/2D MXene@TiO2 composites were synthesized via a simple hydrothermal oxidation method, TiO2 is derived in situ from MXene without adding any additional Ti precursors. TiO2 with low permittivity can effectively regulate the impedance matching and enhance loss mechanisms. The MXene@TiO2-6 h composite shows a reflection loss (RL) of −58.3 dB at 11.36 GHz with a thickness of 1.75 mm, and the maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) is 4.08 GHz (13.92–18 GHz) at 1.26 mm. Furthermore, the 2D/2D composite can obtain efficient microwave absorption at different frequencies by adjusting the thickness; RL can reach −39.1 dB at 5.04 GHz with a thickness of 3.5 mm. The radar cross section (RCS) of MXene@TiO2-6 h is lower than −19 dB m2 at −60–60°, and the minimum RCS is −56 dB m2 at 15°. This work provides a valuable experience in developing microwave absorption materials.

Functionalizing MXene with PEPA-containing polyphosphazene towards highly fire-safe polypropylene

Lei Li,Yishen Chen,Xuejun Lai,Hongqiang Li,Xingrong Zeng

Phosphorus-nitrogen intumescent flame retardant (IFR) is one of the most promising halogen-free flame retardants in enhancing the fire safety of polypropylene (PP), but its efficiency needs to be further improved. Herein, a novel single-component polyphosphazene IFR containing pentaerythritol caged phosphate (PEPA) functionalized titanium carbide nanosheet (MXene), named PZS-MXene, was prepared. When the amount of PZS-MXene was 25 wt%, PP/PZS-MXene classed a UL-94 V-0 rating with the limiting oxygen index of 32.7%. Compared with PP, its peak of heat release rate, total heat release rate and total smoke production rate were reduced by 74.5%, 33.0%, and 19.8%, respectively. The flame-retardant mechanism revealed that PZS-MXene quenched high-active free radicals to inhibit the degradation of PP during the combustion. MXene rapidly catalyzed the carbonization of PZS to form high-quality intumescent char layer on its surface. Besides, MXene acted as the supporting skeletons and exerted the layered barrier effect to improve the compactness of the intumescent char layer, thus effectively inhibited the degradation and combustion of PP. This work provided new insights for the efficient halogen-free flame-retardant PP.

Ti3C2 MXene/gold nanorods-based hybrid nanoparticles with photodynamic antibacterial activities

Zhu Beibei,Song Pingan,Li Jingguo,Cao Shaokui,Shi Jun

Photodynamic therapy as an antibiotic-free method could effectively solve the bacterial infection problem and avoid the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria. In this paper, Ti 3 C 2 @gold nanorods (GNRs)/PDA nanoparticles with synergistic photodynamic antibacterial properties were obtained by coating PDA on the surface of in situ growth Ti 3 C 2 @GNRs. GNRs growing on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 MXene nanosheets effectively prevented the aggregation of Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets, which ensured the distinct photodynamic antibacterial performance of Ti 3 C 2 . In addition, the introduction of SH-PEG-CH 3 to Ti 3 C 2 @GNRs nanosheets endowed Ti 3 C 2 @GNRs/PDA nanoparticles with good biocompatibility. Furthermore, Ti 3 C 2 @GNRs/PDA nanoparticles possessed synergistically enhanced photodynamic properties, caused by the remarkable photodynamic properties of Ti 3 C 2 MXene and PDA. In addition, with the increase in PDA content, Ti 3 C 2 @GNRs/PDA nanoparticles could produce more 1 O 2 under 660 nm laser irradiation and the minimum inhibitory concentrations of Ti 3 C 2 @GNRs/PDA 50 nanoparticles against E. coli and S. aureus decreased to about 0.07 mg/mL. Thus, this work utilizes the 1 O 2 -generating performance of Ti 3 C 2 MXene and PDA to fabricate Ti 3 C 2 @GNRs/PDA nanoparticles with synergistically enhanced photodynamic antibacterial activities, which is expected to be applied in antibiotic-free antibacterial field. Superhydrophobic hollow magnetized Fe3O4 nanospheres/MXene fabrics for electromagnetic interference shielding

Xianhong Zheng,Jinhao Tang,Lvzhu Cheng,Haiwei Yang,Lihua Zou,Changlong Li

The development of high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials is urgently needed to mitigate electromagnetic radiation pollution. Two-dimensional transition metal carbides (MXenes) are promising EMI shielding materials because of their high metallic electrical conductivity . However, tuning the EMI shielding performance of MXene composites remains challenging via the structure engineering strategy. Herein, we develop a layer-by-layer assembling strategy to construct multilayer sandwiched hollow magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanospheres (HFO)/MXene on flexible nonwoven fabrics . The fabricated Fe 3 O 4 /MXene composite fabrics (HFMs) exhibit low sheet resistance (4.6 Ω/□), super-hydrophobicity, self-cleaning, and good EMI shielding performance (EMI shielding effectiveness of 33.28 dB). More importantly, the EMI shielding mechanism of HFMs is tunable according to the loaded active materials. Thus, the mechanism can alternate from absorption to reflection. Moreover, the HFMs exhibit good electrothermal performance and can be used as a wearable heater for personal thermal management. This work provides a new approach for the structural design of high EMI shielding materials, and paves the way for the development of wearable electronics.

Ultrahigh Energy and Power Densities of d-MXene-Based Symmetric Supercapacitors

Beenish Mustafa,Wengang Lu,Zhiyuan Wang,Fuzhuo Lian,Andy Shen,Bing Yang,Jun Yuan,Chang Wu,Yangbowen Liu,Weiwei Hu,Lei Wang,Geliang Yu

Here, rational design electrodes are fabricated by mixing MXene with an aqueous solution of chloroauric acid (HAuCl4). In order to prevent MXene from self-restacking, the groups of -OH on the surface of Ti3C2Txnanosheets underwent a one-step simultaneous self-reduction from AuCl4-, generating spaces for rapid ion transit. Additionally, by using this procedure, MXene’s surface oxidation can be decreased while preserving its physio-chemical properties. The interlayered MX/Au NPs that have been obtained are combined into a conducting network structure that offers more active electrochemical sites and improved mass transfer at the electrode–electrolyte interface, both of which promote quick electron transfer during electrochemical reactions and excellent structural durability. The Ti3C2Tx-AuNPs film thus demonstrated a rate performance that was preferable to that of pure Ti3C2Txfilm. According to the results of the characterization, the AuNPs effectively adorn the MXene nanosheets. Due to the renowned pseudocapacitance charge storage mechanism, MXene-based electrode materials also work well as supercapacitors in sulfuric acid, which is why MXene AuNPs electrodes have been tested in 3 M and 1 M H2SO4. The symmetric supercapacitors made of MXene and AuNPs have shown exceptional specific capacitance of 696.67 Fg−1at 5 mVs−1in 3 M H2SO4electrolyte, and they can sustain 90% of their original capacitance for 5000 cycles. The highest energy and power density of this device, which operates within a 1.2 V potential window, are 138.4 Wh kg−1and 2076 W kg−1, respectively. These findings offer a productive method for creating high-performance metal oxide-based symmetric capacitors and a straightforward, workable approach for improving MXene-based electrode designs, which can be applied to other electro-chemical systems that are ion transport-restricted, such as metal ion batteries and catalysis. Keywords:symmetric supercapacitors;MXene;chloroauric acid (HauCl4);energy density;power density;aqueous electrolyte;energy storage;2D materials

Dual active nanozyme-loaded MXene enables hyperthermia-enhanced tumor nanocatalytic therapy

Minglu Tang,Yangtian Shi,Liang Lu,Jingqi Li,Zhaocong Zhang,Jiatong Ni,Wenxin Wang,Yanhua Zhang,Tiedong Sun,Zhiguang Wu

Nanozymes, which have enzymatic activity and physicochemical properties of nanomaterials, have attracted extensive attention in the field of tumor therapy. However, the low activity of nanozymes in the tumor microenvironment leads to limited therapeutic effects. Here, we report an MXene-integrated nanozyme that exhibits dual catalytic activities, exerting synergistic effects to enhance tumor therapy. The MXene-integrated nanozyme consists of CeO 2 nanozymes with dual enzyme-like activities (simulating catalase and peroxidase) loaded on MXene. In such a construct, the catalase- and peroxidase-like activity of CeO 2 nanozymes alleviates hypoxia and elevates oxidative stress in the tumor microenvironment, and the overexpressed glutathione (GSH) is consumed by the redox reaction of CeO 2 nanozymes. The CeO 2 nanozyme-loaded MXene could couple the photothermal effect and dual enzyme-like activities, resulting in enhanced tumor nanocatalytic therapy with a tumor growth inhibition (TGI) effect of 92%. Dual active nanozyme-loaded MXene is a promising material for the development of nanozyme catalytic therapy in the future.

3D Printing of Ultrathin MXene toward Tough and Thermally Resistant Nanocomposites

Yuewei Li,Ranjith Kumar Kankala,Ai-Zheng Chen,Shi-Bin Wang

Liquid crystal display (LCD)-based 3D printing, a facile and cost-effective manufacturing technique, is often applied when fabricating objects with porcelain structures using photosensitive resins (PSRs). Currently, 3D printed constructions are typically used as models for demonstration purposes rather than industrial applications because of their poor performance. In this study, we prepared nanocomposites by incorporating Ti3C2MXene nanosheets to enhance the overall characteristics of a PSR, including mechanical properties and thermal resistance. Notably, the designed nanocomposites showed optimum performance at an MXene loading of 0.5%w/w. The mechanical properties of the designed nanocomposites confirmed the enhanced ultimate tensile and flexural strengths (by 32.1% and 42.7%, respectively), at 0.5%w/wMXene loading. Moreover, the incorporated MXene presented no substantial influence on the toughness of the PSR. The glass transition and thermal degradation temperatures at 5% weight loss increased by 7.4 and 10.6 °C, respectively, resulting predominantly from the hydrogen bonding between the PSR and MXene. Together, the experimental results indicate that the designed PSR/MXene nanocomposites are expected to replace pristine resins for LCD printing in various practical applications.Keywords:3D printing;photosensitive resin;mechanical property;thermal resistance

Anisotropic electromagnetic absorption of the aligned Ti3C2Tx MXene/RGO nanocomposite foam

Yuanhao Ning,Minglong Yang,Zongbin Zhao,Xianxian Sun,Shuang Yang,Shasha Wang,Lei Liang,Yuanjing Cheng,Weilong Yin,Ye Yuan,Yibin Li

Transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) with superb electrical properties have excellent applications for electromagnetic wave absorption (EMA). Whereas, the three-dimensional (3D) MXene's fabrication assemblies with anisotropic EMA performance are still a challenge as MXene nanosheets have weak gelation capabilities. In this study, graphene oxide was introduced to assist in fabricating the 3D MXene/RGO porous foam through the method of unidirectional freeze casting followed by hydrazine hydrate chemical reduction. Combined with the excellent electrical properties of MXene and RGO , the resultant lightweight (∼6 mg/cm 3 ) MXene/RGO composite foam (MGF) with a free-standing configuration exhibits anisotropic microwave absorption performance. At the sample thickness of 5 mm, MGF-1/2 shows −26.79 dB minimum reflection loss at 4.39 GHz along the perpendicular direction that relates to the unidirectional freeze casting direction. While along the parallel direction, materials with 3 mm thickness reach the maximum effective bandwidth of 8.34 GHz. The lightweight MXene/RGO nanocomposite foam with anisotropic performance may significantly extend the feasibility of MXenes in EMA.

Alkali-Induced Porous MXene/Carbon Nanotube-Based Film Electrodes for Supercapacitors

Kangle Li,Peng Zhang,Razium Ali Soomro,Bin Xu

MXenes have emerged as promising electrode materials for supercapacitors based on their metallic conductivity, good hydrophilicity, rich surface chemistry, and excellent mechanical characteristics. However, the strong interlayer van der Waals forces induce significant layer restacking, which restrict complete exposure of MXenes’ surface active sites, impeding electron/ion transport and resulting in poor electrochemical performances. Herein, a porous MXene/carbon nanotube (CNT) film was prepared through a simple alkali-induced process. The developed porosity and the introduction of CNTs can effectively suppress the restacking of MXene nanosheets, promoting the effective utilization of the surface active sites of the MXene and facilitating fast ion/electron transportation. Consequently, the porous MXene/CNT film exhibited a high specific capacitance of 401.4 F g–1 at 1 A g–1 and a sustained capacitance of 336.2 F g–1 at an ultrahigh current density of 1000 A g–1, corresponding to an 83.8% capacitance retention. Furthermore, the film electrode demonstrated outstanding cycling stability, with a capacitance retention of 99.0% after 20,000 cycles at 100 A g–1, showing its significant potential for supercapacitor applications.

Highly Performed Fiber-Based Supercapacitor in a Conjugation of Mesoporous MXene

Zijiao Guo,Zan Lu,Yue Li,Wei Liu

With the continuous demands for wearable electronics, the embeddable power sources have drawn attention to develop advanced electrode materials and feasible manufacture procedures. Fiber-based flexible energy storage devices have the potential to be practically integrated by utilizing the high-performance materials with precisely constructed structures. Herein, a novel approach is presented to achieve an outstanding fiber-based supercapacitor by simultaneous wet-spinning of mesoporous MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) nanoflakes. The volumetric capacitance of the porous fiber is enhanced up to ≈145% when the content of mesoporous MXene reaches 15 wt%. The symmetric all-solid-state fiber supercapacitor shows an extraordinary capability of 821.5 F cm –3 at a current density of 0.5 A cm –3 , which reflects an enormous improvement to that of a nonporous MXene fiber-based supercapacitor. The measured energy density is 8.9 mWh cm –3 at a power density of 401 mW cm –3 , which also indicates the effective synergy of the constructed pathways for ions and electrons. This work demonstrates the feasibility of scalable production of fiber-based electrode materials with porous MXene for powering wearable applications.
