Intestinal stem cells (ISCs) engage in proliferation to maintain a stable stem cell population and differentiate into functional epithelial subpopulations. This intricate process is upheld by various signals derived from the host and gut microbiota, establishing an ISC niche. However, during inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), this signaling niche undergoes dramatic changes, leading to impaired ISC and hindered restoration of the damaged intestinal epithelial barrier. This study introduces intestinal inflammatory microenvironment-responsive microsphere vehicles designed to remodel the ISC niche, offering an approach to treat IBD. Using an advanced emulsion technique, these microsphere vehicles specifically target colonic inflammation sites, delivering a responsive release of MXene and l-arginine. This delivery system is formulated to modulate intestinal flora and immune responses effectively. l-arginine is converted into nitric oxide to regulate the gut microbiome, while MXene serves as a nanoimmunomodulator to stabilize immune homeostasis. Our findings demonstrate that the anti-inflammatory properties of the microspheres are key to promoting epithelial repair and remodeling of the ISC niche. This study highlights the role of antioxidant microspheres as anti-inflammatory agents that indirectly support ISC function and gut regeneration.

Having poor interfacial compatibility between biochar microsphere (BM) and polylactic acid (PLA) should be responsible for the unbalance of composite film strength and toughness. Elucidating the effect of polydopamine (PDA) on BM and BM/PLA composite films is the ultimate goal of this study based on the mussel bionic principle. It was found that the strong adhesion of PDA on the BM surface was achieved, which improved the surface roughness and thermal stability . Also, PDA modification can facilitate crystallization, increase thermal properties, improve interfacial compatibility, and enhance the tensile properties of BM/PLA composite films. Silane-based PDA modified BM/PLA composite film exhibited the best tensile strength , tensile modulus, and elongation at break with 77.95 MPa, 1.87 GPa, and 7.30%. These noteworthy findings, achieving a simultaneous improvement in PLA strength and toughness, hold promising implications for its sustainability.

A novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was developed for the ultra-sensitive and highly selective detection of hydroquinone (HQ), featuring a composite structure that combines 0D CdS nanoparticles with a 3D flower-like ZnIn 2 S 4 microsphere . The sensor, termed rMIP/CdS/ZnIn 2 S 4 , employed molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) to achieve specific recognition of HQ. An p-phenylenediamine (pPD) polymer film was electrochemically polymerized onto the surface of the CdS/ZnIn 2 S 4 composite-coated glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Through hydrogen bonding, HQ molecules were imprinted onto the polymer film. Subsequent elution removed these molecules, leaving behind specific recognition sites, enabling selective detection of HQ. The unique spatial structure and heterojunction properties of the 0D CdS nanoparticle/3D flower-like ZnIn 2 S 4 composite, combined with molecular imprinting, significantly enhanced the photocurrent response and increased the selectivity and sensitivity for HQ detection. Under optimal conditions, the rMIP/CdS/ZnIn 2 S 4 sensor demonstrated a low detection limit (0.7 nmol·L −1 , S/N=3) over a wide linear range of 1–1200 nmol·L −1 . The sensor was successfully applied to detect HQ in real water samples, showing promise for environmental pollution control applications.

Electrocatalytic NO 3 − reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) has attracted much attention as a promising NH 3 synthesis pathway, and Cu-based catalysts have been proven to lead to advantages in nitrate reduction . However, the active hydrogen (H*) produced by the Cu-based catalyst is insufficient to satisfy the hydrogenation process of the NO 3 RR intermediate, resulting in a large generation of NO 2 − . In this paper, the Co(OH) 2 /Cu 2 O heterojunction was constructed to improve the kinetics of H 2 O dissociation to generate H* and Co(OH) 2 /Cu 2 O (5.87 %) showed lower faradaic efficiency (FE) of NO 2 − than Cu 2 O (50.95 %). Mechanistic studies reveal that the introduction of Co(OH) 2 can help Cu 2 O lower the energy barrier of H 2 O dissociation, greatly boosting the supply of active hydrogen (H*). Not only that, but the reaction energy barriers of *NO to *NOH can be greatly reduced. The final twofold reason works together to greatly improve the efficiency of hydrogenation of NO 2 − , largely solving the problem of FE reduction due to the delayed consumption of NO 2 − , thus realizing improved performance.

This study introduces a new electrochemical sensor for bisphenol A (BPA) and metal ions utilizing a microsphere dual-ligand Ni-based MOFs modified carbon paste. The MOFs (Ni-bipy-btc) synthesized from dual-ligands were prepared via a hydrothermal method and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), FT-IR spectrometer, X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS), and specific surface area test (BET) analysis. The resulting MOFs exhibited promising performance as electrode materials for electrochemical sensors targeting the detection of BPA and heavy metal ions (Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ ). The linear range of the MOFs (Ni-bipy-btc)/CPE electrode for BPA detection ranged from 0.2 to 150 μM, with a detection limit of 0.045 μM, demonstrating robust immunity and stability. Additionally, the limit of detection for the MOFs (Ni-bipy-btc)/CPE electrode was found to be 4.3 and 9.5 nM for Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ ions, respectively, showcasing excellent stability and reproducibility. This study presents a straightforward approach for the highly sensitive electrochemical detection of BPA and heavy metal ions using a simple hydrothermal reaction method.

In this study, tannin-derived porous carbon (TAC) with different microstructures was prepared via a microwave hydrothermal method, followed by KOH activation. Subsequently, the sea urchin–like NiCo-LDH/Tannin-derived carbon-based microsphere composite materials were rationally synthesized through a single-step microwave hydrothermal co-assembly process. The physicochemical characteristics and supercapacitive performance were systematically analyzed. TAC with a microspherical structure promoted and controlled the growth of LDHs, resulting in a more regular sea urchin–like structure, improved dispersibility, reduced resistance, and increased active sites. NiCo-LDH@TAC600-0 (without KOH activation) as an electrode material delivered a specific capacitance (Cs) of 1250 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 and 1035 F g −1 at 10 A g −1 , with a rate performance of 82.8%. The asymmetric supercapacitor device using NiCo-LDH@TAC600-0 and TAC provided an energy density of 30.8 Wh kg −1 at 800 W kg −1 and a capacitance retention rate of 72.5% after 5000 cycles. This study offers a novel approach to enhancing NiCo-LDH properties for efficient energy storage.

In this manuscript, a sandwich electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor for galactosyltransferase (Gal T) activity analysis based on a graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheet interface and polystyrene microsphere-enhanced responses is described. The carboxylated g-C3N4 nanosheet was firstly coated on the GC electrode surface, and then the bovine serum albumin conjugated with N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc-BSA) was further modified on the g-C3N4 modified GC electrode. In the presence of Gal T and UDP-Gal as a coreactor, galactose was conjugated to GlcNAc-BSA, and the ECL signal of the GlcNAc-BSA conjugated g-C3N4 nanosheet modified electrode decreased. After the adsorption of Artocarpus integrifolia lectin (AIA) conjugated polystyrene microsphere (PSM) nanoprobes through the specific interaction between galactose and AIA, the ECL signal decreased significantly due to the poor conductivity of the nanoprobes, which inhibited the electron transfer on the electrode interface, leading to high sensitivity toward Gal T activity analysis. The detection limit of 7 × 10−5 U mL−1 was obtained. The proposed ECL sensor has been applied to Gal T activity analysis in serum samples as well as Gal T activity expression in different cell lines, and may be a novel tool to for glycosyltransferase activity evaluation and inhibition in clinic diagnostics. This strategy can also be extended to detect and monitor other glycosyltransferases.

A number of bone repair materials are demanded due to bone injury in clinical treatment. Magnetic hydrogels combined with the magnetic field have showed great promoting potential in the field of bone regeneration. Considering the superiority of magnetic microspheres in magnetic localization
and drug release, magnetic poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) microspheres, obtained by electrospraying, were combined with gelatin hydrogel to construct a magnetic poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) microsphere-gelatin hydrogel for bone repair in our study. Particularly, we investigated the combined
effect of 20 mT static magnetic field and magnetic poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) microsphere-gelatin hydrogel on the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts, indicating that it could significantly promote cell growth at a low concentration of Fe3 O4. Furthermore, the
hydrogel containing 400 mg˙ L–1Fe3 O4 presented the highest growth-promoting effect under a 20 mT static magnetic field. Therefore, the magnetic poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) microsphere-gelatin hydrogel possesses impressive application value in promoting
osteogenesis and bone repair.

Sensitive, rapid, and multiplexed detection of foodborne pathogens is critical for ensuring food safety, given the prevalence of multipathogen contamination in foods. Herein, we developed a polystyrene (PS) microsphere-enabled three-dimensional (color/size/number) sensing strategy and further established an oil-immersion microscopy and computer vision-integrated imaging biosensor for multiplexed detection of foodborne pathogens. This method employed differentially colored and sized microspheres as signal probes for pathogen encoding. By the integration of aptamer-binding reactions with the computer vision algorithm-based decode and counting process, the number of PS probes was correlated with the corresponding pathogen concentration. Meanwhile, the oil-immersion imaging system significantly enhanced microsphere image clarity and resolution, reducing method dependence on algorithmic and instrumental performance while improving applicability. This biosensor enables the simultaneous detection of multiple foodborne pathogens (e.g., Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus) within 50 min at detection limits below 100 CFU/mL without DNA extraction, providing an intelligent platform for food safety assurance.

Emulsion polymerization conducted in the presence of polymeric emulsifiers is a new strategy to reduce the possible environmental pollution and product performance degradation caused by small molecular emulsifier residue. However, rare literature has reported on the research field of vinyl chloride (VC). This study constructed a facile and efficient VC emulsion polymerization system by utilizing a modified poly(maleic anhydride-co-vinyl pivalate) (PMVP) copolymer as a polymeric emulsifier. Concretely, PMVP copolymer microspheres are synthesized first via self-stabilized precipitation polymerization (2SP) between maleic anhydride (MAH) and vinyl pivalate (VPi). The effects of key reaction parameters, including solvent composition, monomer feed ratios, reaction temperature, and monomer/initiator dosages on the present 2SP polymerization are investigated systematically. As a result, monodisperse PMVP microspheres with tunable particle sizes (Dn, 800–1300 nm), low number-average molecular weight (Mn ∼ 2300 g/mol), and high yield (>90%) are successfully prepared in the methyl tert-butyl ether/n-hexane (m/m = 3:2) mixture solvent, which is screened as the optimal reaction medium. Subsequently, PMVP microspheres are ammonia-hydrolyzed and further applied as effective polymeric emulsifiers for VC emulsion polymerization. Gratifyingly, poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) emulsion is synthesized successfully with high monomer conversion. The size of PVC latex can be tuned depending on the emulsifier concentration. More importantly, the final emulsion exhibits outstanding colloidal stability against thermal, mechanical force, freeze–thaw, and Ca2+ ions. In summary, this work has successfully constructed a PVC emulsion polymerization by employing PMVP-based copolymers as functional polymeric emulsifiers, offering a promising platform for emulsion polymerization applications.

Pichia kudriavzevii was one of the important aroma-producing fungi in the solid-state fermentation of Baijiu, and immobilization was an effective strategy for improving microbial performance. Herein, P. kudriavzevii cells were immobilized in a gel network that crosslinked by chitosan and sodium alginate to form sodium alginate/chitosan- P. kudriavzevii microspheres (SA/CS-PMs). Their structural characteristics and formation processes were characterized by SEM and FT-IR. The effect of synthesis conditions on the performance of microspheres were determined by single-factor experiments. Under the optimal conditions, the SA/CS-PMs could increase the amylase activity of the fermentation broth by 57.18%, the esterase activity by 66.13%, the content of ester by 67.04%, and could be reused at least three times. Further research results indicated that the content of ester could be increased significantly in Baijiu solid-state fermentation with the SA/CS-PMs. In conclusion, the SA/CS-PMs could improve the ester production ability of P. kudriavzevii by increasing the esterase activity, which was a valuable exploration of directional biosynthesis and a feasible strategy to improve solid-state fermentation quality.

The construction of hollow metallic microspheres with rationally designed building blocks of the metal shell is a promising way to achieve low density and functionality control, but the microengineering of the metallic structures on a micrometer spherical surface is a great challenge. In the present work, a novel and simple calcination-induced aggregation strategy is developed to realize the distribution status and microstructure control of Co-Cu bimetal building blocks assembled on a hollow glass microsphere support, and thus a series of low-density (0.58 g cm −3 ) dual shell composite hollow microspheres are constructed with gradient in electromagnetic property depending on the calcination temperature (CT). The optimized microwave shielding performance can be achieved at a CT of 500 °C, while further increasing CT to 700 °C leads to an interesting conversion from microwave shielding to absorption with an optimized effective absorption bandwidth of 4.64 GHz at a low matching thickness of 1.33 mm. The mechanism underlying the CT-dependent metallic shell structure variation and further the decisive effect of the shell structure on the microwave response behavior are proposed based on a series of contrast experiments.
