Microfluidic platform serves as controllable fabrication of binary Mo/Ir nanodots/carbon hetero-material for efficient electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction

Hengyuan Liu,Xingjiang Wu,Jianhong Xu

Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is regarded as a potential routine to achieve environment-friendly ammonia production, because of its abundant nitrogen resources, clean energy utilization and flexible operation. However, it is hindered by low activity and selectivity, in which condition well-designed catalysts are urgently in need. In this work, a binary Mo/Ir nanodots/carbon (Mo/Ir/C) hetero-material is efficiently constructed via microfluidic strategy, of which the nanodots are homogeneously distributed on the carbon skeleton and the average size is approximately 1 nm. Excellent performance for NRR is obtained in 1 mol L −1 KOH, of which the optimized ammonia yield and faradic efficiency are 7.27 μg h −1 cm −2 and 2.31% respectively. Moreover, the optimized ammonia yield of 6.20 μg h −1 cm −2 and faradic efficiency of 10.59% are also obtained in 0.005 mol L −1 H 2 SO 4 . This work achieves the continuous-flow synthesis and controllable adjustment of hetero-materials for favorable morphologies, which provides an innovative pathway for catalyst design and further promotes the development of ammonia production field.

FeMo@porous carbon derived from MIL-53(Fe)@MoO3 as excellent heterogeneous electro-Fenton catalyst: Co-catalysis of Mo

Xuedong Du,Wenyang Fu,Pei Su,Qizhan Zhang,Minghua Zhou

An ultra-efficient electro-Fenton catalyst with porous carbon coated Fe-Mo metal (FeMo@PC), was prepared by calcining MIL-53(Fe)@MoO 3 . This FeMo@PC-2 exhibited impressive catalytic performance for sulfamethazine (SMT) degradation with a high turnover frequency value (7.89 L/(g·min)), much better than most of reported catalysts. The mineralization current efficiency and electric energy consumption were 83.2% and 0.03 kWh/g TOC , respectively, at low current (5 mA) and small dosage of catalyst (25.0 mg/L). The removal rate of heterogeneous electro-Fenton (Hetero-EF) process catalyzed by FeMo@PC-2 was 4.58 times that of Fe@PC/Hetero-EF process. Because the internal-micro-electrolysis occurred between PC and Fe 0 , while the co-catalysis of Mo accelerated the rate-limiting step of the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle and greatly improved the H 2 O 2 utilization efficiency. The results of radical scavenger experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance confirmed the main role of surface-bound hydroxyl radical oxidation. This process was feasible to remove diverse organic contaminants such as phenol, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, carbamazepine and SMT. This paper enlightened the importance of the doped Mo, which could greatly improve the activity of the iron-carbon heterogeneous catalyst derived from metal-organic frameworks in EF process for efficient removal of organic contaminants.

A novel Fe/Mo co-catalyzed graphene-based nanocomposite to activate peroxymonosulfate for highly efficient degradation of organic pollutants

Hao Liu,Chao Huang,Ping Wang,Su Huang,Xiong Yang,Haiyin Xu,Jian Zhu,Dingxun Ling,Chonglin Feng,Zhiming Liu

A novel 3D α-FeOOH@MoS 2 /rGO nanocomposite was successfully fabricated by a simple in situ hydrothermal method. It is a highly efficient heterogeneous catalyst in activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for rapid degradation of rhodamine B (RhB), with 99.9% of RhB removed within 20 min. The introduction of rGO contributes to uniform dispersion and sufficient contact of α-FeOOH and MoS 2 nanosheets. Highly active Mo(IV) enhances the reduction of Fe(III), improves Fe(III)/Fe(II) conversion and promotes the generation of O 2 1 O21 , which ensures an improved catalytic activity . MoS 2 /rGO hybrid can effectively solve the problem of material reunion and make α-FeOOH exhibit excellent catalytic performance. The α-FeOOH@MoS 2 -rGO/PMS system is a co-catalytic system based on the active components of α-FeOOH and MoS 2 . The main reactive oxygen species in the α-FeOOH@MoS 2 -rGO/PMS system are O 2 1 O21 , S O 4 . − SO4.− and ⋅ O 2 − ⋅O2− , which contribute to a high reactivity over a wide range of pH (5–9). Besides, this system is highly resistant to anions ( C l − Cl− , S O 4 2 − SO42− ) and natural organic matter (humic acid), and can be widely used for degradation of common organic pollutants. The α-FeOOH@MoS 2 /rGO is a promising Fenton-like catalyst for refractory organic wastewater treatment .

Inverted-design for highly-active hydrogen evolution electrocatalyst of MoS2@Ni3S2 core-shell via unlocking the potential of Mo

Chao Song,Yuhua Liu,Chengxiang Huang,Miao Liu,Nailin Yue,Zunhao Zhang,Zizhun Wang,Xu Zou,Wei Zhang,Weitao Zheng

Through inverted-design rather than modifying the generally-assumed S active sites in popular MoS 2 , we unlock the potential of Mo sites and successfully prepared novel MoS 2 @Ni 3 S 2 /NF core-shell nanospheres as a catalyst for the high-performance hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The ΔG H at the Mo site is optimized via Ni 3 S 2 to achieve excellent HER activity. At low current densities, it has similar activity to the Pt/C. However, its performance is better than Pt/C at high density. Moreover, our catalyst shows a considerable stability at a variety of current densities for 50 h, promising to substitute noble metal catalysts in application of commercial alkaline electrocatalysts .

Self-template formation of porous yolk-shell structure Mo-doped NiCo2O4 toward enhanced lithium storage performance as anode material

Yongqiang Ren,Xiuyan Li,Yinan Wang,Qinghua Gong,Shaonan Gu,Tingting Gao,Xuefeng Sun,Guowei Zhou

Hollow ternary metal oxides have shown enormous potential in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which is ascribed to their complex chemical composition, abundant active defect sites, and the synergy effect between metals. In this work, we synthesized Mo-doped NiCo 2 O 4 porous spheres with yolk-shell structure by using a simple self-templating method. Surprisingly, other than the yolk-shell structure we had obtained, the inner core of the yolk-shell was also porous, which could fully enhance the electrolyte infiltration and promote the transmission of lithium ions (Li + ) and electrons (e − ). The diameter of the porous core in the yolk-shell sphere was about 530 nm, and the outer shell's thickness was up to 110 nm. In addition, the unique pores in the core appeared in the diameter of about 85 nm. With this structure, the volume expansion of the anode could be well inhibited during charge/discharge. It exhibited prominent electrochemical performance with high reversible capacity (1338 mA h g −1 at 100 mA g −1 ), satisfactory cycle life (1360 mA h g −1 after 200 cycles at 100 mA g −1 ), and exceptional rate capability (820 mA h g −1 at 2000 mA g −1 ) as anode material in LIBs.

An in-situ NH4+-etched strategy for anchoring atomic Mo site on ZnIn2S4 hierarchical nanotubes for superior hydrogen photocatalysis

Chao Yuguang,Zhang Weiyu,Zhou Peng,Chen Hui,Lu Shiyu,Li Menggang,Zhang Qinghua,Gu Lin,Guo Shaojun

Atomic sites co-catalyst (ASC) on photocatalytic materials possesses an attractive prospect to promote charge carrier separation and tune surface reaction kinetics, yet the synthesis of earth-abundant ASC under low temperature remains a great challenge. Here, a novel in-situ NH 4 + -etched strategy to anchor atomic Mo sites on ZnIn 2 S 4 hierarchical nanotubes (HNTs) with abundant mesopores under mild conditions for promoting charge carrier separation and enhancing light multi-reflections is developed for efficient photocatalytic H 2 evolution. Density functional theory calculations and linear sweep voltammetry demonstrate that the well-defined Mo-S 2 O 1 sites with distinctive coordination configuration and electronic property contribute to the enhanced separation of photo-generated charge carriers and reduced Gibbs free energy for H 2 evolution. Consequently, the well-defined MoSA-ZIS HNTs present an excellent photocatalytic activity with a rate of 29.9 µmol h −1 (5.98 mmol g −1 h −1 ), which is 7.3 times higher than that of ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets (NSs), to be among the best ZnIn 2 S 4 -based photocatalysts. The present strategy breaks the high-temperature limitation of conventional top-down thermal dissociation/emitting approach for anchoring non-noble metal atomic sites on catalyst support.

The POM@MOF hybrid derived hierarchical hollow Mo/Co bimetal oxides nanocages for efficiently activating peroxymonosulfate to degrade levofloxacin

Xinlu Yang,Xinyu Xie,Siqi Li,Wenxuan Zhang,Xiaodan Zhang,Hongxiang Chai,Yuming Huang

Herein, we reported the design and fabrication of polyoxometalates coupling metal-organic framework (POM@MOF) hybrids derived hierarchical hollow Mo/Co bimetal oxides nanocages (Mo/Co HHBONs) for the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade levofloxacin (Lev). The Mo/Co HHBONs are hollow nanocages with high specific-surface areas and hierarchical micropores, mesopores , and macropores . In addition to compositional modulation, polyoxometalate (H 3 PMo 12 O 40 ·nH 2 O) exhibited striking effect on the textural properties of Mo/Co HHBONs. The Mo/Co HHBONs had outstanding catalytic activity with first order-kinetics that were 6 − 10 times higher those previously reported. They exhibited good adaptability over a pH range of 3 − 11, as well as excellent universality and reusability. By altering the surface porosity, electronic structure, and oxygen vacancies of Co 3 O 4 , hetero-metal Mo doping induced Mo/Co HHBONs significantly promote the generation of reactive oxygen species , including • OH, SO 4 •− , O 2 •− , and 1 O 2 . Density functional theory indicated that Mo/Co HHBONs had better adsorption, enhanced electron-transfer abilities, and a longer O-O bond length than did Co 3 O 4 , for improved catalytic reactivity. This research provides a new strategy to design the POM@MOF hybrids derived hierarchical hollow nanocages with highly PMS activating capacity for the removal of antibiotics and other refractory contaminants.

Heterostructured Ni–Mo–N nanoparticles decorated on reduced graphene oxide as efficient and robust electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction

Sen Xue,Weimin Zhang,Qing Zhang,Jinhong Du,Hui-Ming Cheng,Wencai Ren

Water electrolysis in alkaline electrolyte is a promising technology for large-scale hydrogen production . However, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is quite sluggish in alkaline electrolyte. Developing highly active and stable non-noble metal electrocatalysts is highly desired to solve this issue but of great challenge. Here, we report a catalyst constructed by Ni–Mo–N nanoparticles decorated on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (Ni–Mo–N/NG). Due to the high intrinsic electrocatalytic activity of heterostructured Ni–Mo–N nanoparticles and synergistic effects between the nanoparticles and graphene, the catalyst exhibits excellent HER electrocatalytic activity with zero onset potential and 46.6 and 159.8 mV overpotentials for 10 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, in alkaline electrolyte at low mass loading. Such electrocatalytic performances exceed those of many reported non-noble metal catalysts even with much higher mass loading, demonstrating the great potential of our Ni–Mo–N/NG catalysts for hydrogen production by water electrolysis.

Effect of Mo Addition and Water Vapor on the High-Temperature Corrosion Performance of APS Ni-Al-based Coatings

Wu Duoli,Wu Haotian,Yuan Ziyi,Wei Xinlong,Zhang Chao

To investigate the influence of Mo addition and water vapor content on the high-temperature corrosion resistance of Ni-Al-based coatings, 0Mo, 5Mo, and 10Mo coatings were deposited by APS thermal spray onto stainless steels. The chlorine-induced corrosion test was conducted in an experimental environment simulating a biomass boiler. The results show that adding the Mo element lowers the coating's ability to resist corrosion without water vapor. The coating is more prone to peeling because Mo prevents the coating from eventually forming a protective oxide layer. Water vapor significantly speeds up the production of oxides and modifies their morphology and structure. The combined effects of Mo and water vapor increase the coating's ability to resist corrosion. The development of thick and protective Ni and Al oxide layers on the coated surface is aided by the acceleration of oxide production by water vapor and the alteration of oxide structure by Mo components.

Defect engineering induces Mo-regulated Co9Se8/FeNiSe heterostructures with selenium vacancy for enhanced electrocatalytic overall water splitting in alkaline

Jingwei Liang,Shaobin Li,Fengbo Li,Li Zhang,Yufeng Jiang,Huiyuan Ma,Kun Cheng,Liang Qing

The pursuit of cost-effective catalysts for electrocatalytic overall water splitting continues to present a significant challenge in the field. A molybdenum (Mo)-regulated Co 9 Se 8 /FeNiSe self-supporting electrode material with rich vacancy defects has been prepared by hydrothermal reaction. Doping of Mo atoms not only can form rich selenium vacancy defects to enrich the inherent activity of the catalyst, but also expose more active sites. The intrinsic electronic architecture of the interface catalysis is regulated and optimized through the introduction of heteroatom Mo, resulting in the exceptional catalytic activities of the Mo-Co 9 Se 8 /FeNiSe heterostructure. Additionally, the Faraday efficiency of hydrogen (H 2 ) and oxygen (O 2 ) production approaches 100 %. The voltage required for the water-splitting system is only 1.58 V (10 mA cm −2 ), and 100 h stability test at 100 mA cm −2 demonstrates no decay. This work presents a new perspective for the reasonable design and synthesis of non-precious metal selenide-based bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Preparation of ultrafine Mo powder by the H2 reduction of MoO2: Parameter optimization, reaction kinetic, and its reduction mechanism

Meng-Chao Li,Lu Wang,Zheng-Liang Xue

The influences of different parameters, such as reaction temperature, yttrium (Y) content, and H 2 concentration, on the particle size and morphological structure of Mo powder prepared via the H 2 reduction of MoO 2 , were investigated in the work. TG, XRD , FE-SEM, laser particle size analysis , model fitting, and orthogonal design experiment methods were adopted to analyze the reaction kinetic and reduction mechanism. The results showed that the optimum conditions for preparing ultrafine Mo powder were recognized as 1073 K, 1 mass% Y content, and a H 2 concentration of 0.000576 mol·cm −2 ·min −1 , which enabled the as-prepared Mo powder with a particle size as small as 107 nm. A new interfacial chemical reaction model with the consideration of reaction temperature, H 2 concentration, and sample thickness, was proposed to analyze the reaction kinetic. It was found that the curves predicted by the model agreed well with the experimental data, with the apparent activation energy extracted to be 94.686 kJ/mol. The effect of different individual parameter on the reaction rate and the possible reduction mechanism were also elucidated.
