Effect of Zinc Ions Doping on High Near-infrared (NIR) Reflectance Black Pigments of Ca2MnO4

Zhendong Huang,Yan Shan,Cun Liu,Kezheng Chen,Xuegang Yu

Near-infrared (NIR) reflective pigments have attracted increasing attention in environmental research due to their potential to reduce building energy consumption. In this study, Zn-doped Ca 2 MnO 4 black pigments were synthesized to enhance both NIR reflectance and color performance. The effects of Zn doping on the crystal structure and optical properties were systematically investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, and UV-Vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The optimal composition, Ca 2 Mn 0.96 Zn 0.04 O 4 , exhibited excellent optical characteristics (L*= 40.43, a* = 0.53, b* = 0.10) and a high NIR solar reflectance of approximately 66%. Compared to conventional dark high-reflectance pigments (e.g., Black-10G996), the Zn-doped sample showed significantly improved NIR reflectance (△R* ≥ 20%) and enhanced chromatic properties. The NIR reflectance enhancement was attributed to an increased concentration of oxygen vacancy introduced by Zn doping. Furthermore, thermal simulation experiments under xenon lamp irradiation demonstrated that a model room using Ca 2 Mn 0.96 Zn 0.04 O 4 as the roofing material maintained a temperature 6.5 °C lower than one using a commercial pigment, indicating superior thermal management capability. In addition, the Zn-doped pigments exhibited lower toxicity, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional black pigments.

pH-triggered Schottky heterojunctions for NIR-II-activated and tumor-specific pyroelectrodynamic and photothermal therapy

Jie Meng,Shuang Xie,Zhanlin Zhang,Pan Ran,Xia Lei,Long He,Xiaohong Li

Pyroelectrodynamic therapy (PEDT) of tumors faces challenges due to its low electrocatalytic efficiency at mild temperature and the potential for off-target toxicity to healthy tissue. To overcome these issues, we have engineered pyroelectric nanoparticles (NPs) that feature a pH-triggered heterojunction structure and tumor-selective reactive oxidative species (ROS) production, faclitating synergistic PEDT and mild photothermal therapy (PTT). Herein, molybdenum trioxide (MoO 3 ) was deposited in-situ on the surface of tetragonal BaTiO 3 (tBT) to create tBT@MO. Subsequently, a metal-acid treatment was utrilized to hydrogenate MoO 3 , and the yielded HMO was grafted with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to produce tBT@HMO-PEG. In contrast to vulnerability in normal tissues, hydrogen-doped NPs exhibit stability against H + attacks in the slightly acidic microenvironment of tumors, faclitating efficient near-infrared II (NIR-II) absorption, and the enhanced photothermal conversion enables tumor-selective mild PTT and PEDT. The formation of heterojunctions between tBT and HMO markedly improves electron-hole separations and ROS productions, and the generated pyroelectric field selectively disrupts the membrane potentials of tumor cells, theraby promoting NP internalization. In a tumor-bearing model, NPs exhibit deep tumor penetration and widesperead ROS distribution, overcoming the limitations of the short lifespan and diffusion distance of ROS to achieve potent antitumor efficacy. Moreover, the tumor-selective PEDT and mild hyperthermia ensure treatment safety. Therefore, the innovative design of pH-triggered Schottky heterojunctions effectively mitigate off-target toxicity to normal tissue while improving the precision and efficacy of tumor therapy.

Synthesis and Optical Properties Based on Ni-Doped Zn2SiO4 Blue Pigments with High-NIR Reflectance

Qiuying Wang,Zhiwei Wang,Menghang Qi,Hang Zhao,Xin Xin,Anjali Verma,Theeranun Siritanon,Arthur P. Ramirez,M.A. Subramanian,Peng Jiang

The severe urban heat island effect emphasizes the heightened importance of reducing building energy consumption. Cool pigments with higher near-infrared reflectivity contribute to the overall coating performance of the building. In this work, a novel intense blue pigment with superior infrared reflectance based on Ni-doped Zn2SiO4 was successfully synthesized via the simple solid-state method. The crystal structure, oxidation states, and optical properties are analyzed. The oxidation state of Ni was confirmed to be +2 using magnetic analysis and XPS. The intense blue color exhibited by the solid solution is due to the 3T1(3F) → 3T1(3P) transition of Ni2+ at the tetrahedral sites. UV–vis–NIR spectra demonstrate that this pigment exhibits superior near-infrared reflectance compared to cobalt blue in the range of 900–1700 nm, indicating its potential application in the realm of building energy conservation.

NIR-induced label-free subcutaneous PEC biosensor UC@Cu2O@TiO2 for detection of L-cysteine

Changqiu Ma,Daheng Jiang,Linghui Zeng,Lixin Zhu,Xiaoliang Xu

Conventional photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensors based on ZnO and TiO2 face challenges in applications in vivo due to the poor penetration of excitation light through the skin. To address this limitation, we designed a novel near-infrared (NIR)-driven FTO@UC@Cu2O@TiO2 heterojunction biosensor for subcutaneous L-cysteine detection. NIR light penetrates the skin and excites the upconversion material (called UC for short, NaYF4:Er, Yb), which emits visible light at 540 nm. This emission activates the Cu2O semiconductor to generate photocurrent. The Cu2O@TiO2 heterojunction facilitates charge carrier separation and suppresses electron-hole recombination. The biosensor demonstrates stable, sensitive, and reproducible detection of L-cysteine over a range of 10 μM to 10 pM, with a detection limit of 5.2 pM. Notably, it also enables subcutaneous detection covering a range from 10 μM to 100 pM, with a detection limit of 74 pM. These results provide a promising strategy for real-time in situ monitoring of L-cysteine in clinical applications.

Flexible NIR-to-Blue Quantum Dot Up-Conversion Devices for Wearable Bio-Imaging and Monitoring

Kuibao Yu,Hailong Hu,Yuan Qie,Chao Zhong,Zhihan Lin,Tian Liu,Fushan Li

Near infrared (NIR)-to-visible up-conversion devices (UCDs) offer significant advantages in pixelless bio-imaging and monitoring. Herein, a flexible NIR-to-blue quantum dot (QD) UCD is developed by directly stacking an organic bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) photodetector unit with an environmentally-friendly ZnSe/ZnS QD light-emitting unit in tandem. Aiming at the interconnection layer (ICL) that couples these two units, an Mg-doped ZnO ICL is rationally designed to achieve high conductivity and a low work function, facilitating the rapid transport of photo-generated electrons and their efficient injection into the QD emitting layer. Importantly, Mg-passivated ICL with fewer surface defects alleviates the exciton quenching at the QD/ICL interface and suppresses the undesired charge recombination at the ICL/BHJ interface. The resultant QD-UCDs enable a high photon-to-photon conversion efficiency (

Towards highly efficient NIR II response up-conversion phosphor enabled by long lifetimes of Er3+

Yin Xiumei,Xu Wen,Zhu Ge,Ji Yanan,Xiao Qi,Dong Xinyao,He Ming,Cao Baosheng,Zhou Na,Luo Xixian,Guo Lin,Dong Bin

The second near-infrared (NIR II) response photon up-conversion (UC) materials show great application prospects in the fields of biology and optical communication. However, it is still an enormous challenge to obtain efficient NIR II response materials. Herein, we develop a series of Er 3+ doped ternary sulfides phosphors with highly efficient UC emissions under 1532 nm irradiation. β-NaYS 2 :Er 3+ achieves a visible UC efficiency as high as 2.6%, along with high brightness, spectral stability of lights illumination and temperature. Such efficient UC is dominated by excited state absorption, accompanied by the advantage of long lifetimes ( 4 I 9/2 , 9.24 ms; 4 I 13/2 , 30.27 ms) of excited state levels of Er 3+ , instead of the well-recognized energy transfer UC between sensitizer and activator. NaYS 2 :Er 3+ phosphors are further developed for high-performance underwater communication and narrowband NIR photodetectors. Our findings suggest a novel approach for developing NIR II response UC materials, and simulate new applications, eg., simultaneous NIR and visible optical communication.

Bioactive NIR-II Light-Responsive Shape Memory Composite Based on Cuprorivaite Nanosheets for Endometrial Regeneration

Chenle Dong,Chen Yang,Muhammad Rizwan Younis,Jing Zhang,Gang He,Xingdi Qiu,Lian-Hua Fu,Dong-Yang Zhang,Hao Wang,Wenli Hong,Jing Lin,Xueqing Wu,Peng Huang

Intrauterine adhesions (IUAs) caused by mechanical damage or infection increase the risk of infertility in women. Although numerous physical barriers such as balloon or hydrogel are developed for the prevention of IUAs, the therapeutic efficacy is barely satisfactory due to limited endometrial healing, which may lead to recurrence. Herein, a second near-infrared (NIR-II) light-responsive shape memory composite based on the combination of cuprorivaite (CaCuSi 4 O 10 ) nanosheets (CUP NSs) as photothermal conversion agents and polymer poly( d , l -lactide- co -trimethylene carbonate) (PT) as shape memory building blocks is developed. The as-prepared CUP/PT composite possesses excellent shape memory performance under NIR-II light, and the improved operational feasibility as an antiadhesion barrier for the treatment of IUAs. Moreover, the released ions (Cu, Si) can stimulate the endometrial regeneration due to the angiogenic bioactivity. This study provides a new strategy to prevent IUA and restore the injured endometrium relied on shape memory composite with enhanced tissues reconstruction ability.

Nanoparticles destabilizing the cell membranes triggered by NIR light for cancer imaging and photo-immunotherapy

Tang Dongsheng,Cui Minhui,Wang Bin,Liang Ganghao,Zhang Hanchen,Xiao Haihua

Cationic polymers have great potential for cancer therapy due to their unique interactions with cancer cells. However, their clinical application remains limited by their high toxicity. Here we show a cell membrane-targeting cationic polymer with antineoplastic activity (P mt ) and a second near-infrared (NIR-II) fluorescent biodegradable polymer with photosensitizer Bodipy units and reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsive thioketal bonds (P Bodipy ). Subsequently, these two polymers can self-assemble into antineoplastic nanoparticles (denoted mt-NP Bodipy ) which could further accumulate at the tumor and destroy cell membranes through electrostatic interactions, resulting in cell membrane destabilization. Meanwhile, the photosensitizer Bodipy produces ROS to induce damage to cell membranes, proteins, and DNAs to kill cancer cells concertedly, finally resulting in cell membrane lysis and cancer cell death. This work highlights the use of near-infrared light to spatially and temporarily control cationic polymers for photodynamic therapy, photo-immunotherapy, and NIR-II fluorescence for bio-imaging.

Preparation of NIR responsive resveratrol@Au nanocages using for regulating oxidative stress microenvironment of periodontitis

Mofei Han,Kaiqi Tang,Zhenhua Chen

Periodontitis, as a chronic inflammatory oral disease, is the primary cause of tooth loss. The oxidative stress microenvironment of periodontitis causes damage of both osteoblasts’ mitochondrion and periodontal tissue. Natural extracts with antioxidant properties, including resveratrol (RSV), have been reported in regulating oxidative stress microenvironment, however, the controlled release of them in periodontal tissue is still a challenge. Herein, a smart photothermal-responsive gold nanocages hydrogel (RSV-Au@H) was constructed for the treatment of periodontitis by controlling the release of resveratrol. Under the near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation for 5 min, RSV-Au@H could be heated to 45.8 ℃ due to the good photothermal effect of Au nanocages encapsulated in the hydrogel. This NIR stimulated photothermal effect of RSV-Au@H could control the release of RSV. Molecular biology indicated that RSV-Au@H could scavenge ROS with 42 % efficiency. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed a significant improvement in osteoblasts mitochondrial morphology. Micro-CT scanning revealed that RSV-Au@H reduced the distance between cemento-enamel junction and alveolar bone crest (CEJ-ABC) by up to 55 % and increased bone volume fraction by about 48 %. These results suggested that this multifunctional nanoplatform with NIR controlled release of RSV might be a new therapeutic strategy for periodontitis.

A Multifunctional NIR-II Rare-Earth Nanoagent for In Vivo Monitoring Cancer Revascularization and Prognosis

Zhenfeng Yu,Jialing Zhou,Zi-Han Chen,Zhihua Wang,Aliyah Almomen,Ahmed Mohamed El-Toni,Aibin Liang,Yong Fan,Fan Zhang

Cancer remains a leading cause of mortality worldwide. Although chemotherapeutic agents can effectively induce tumor regression, they often cause severe vascular damage that adversely affects patient prognosis. To address this issue, using the representative chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin (DOX) as the model, a biocompatible rare-earth nanoagent capable of dual-wavelength emission in the UV and NIR-IIb (1500–1700 nm) regions upon excitation at 980 and 808 nm is reported. This unique property endows the spatiotemporally controlled release of Angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1), guided by NIR-IIb imaging, to promote vascular repair following DOX chemotherapy. Furthermore, the system allows for real-time monitoring of angiogenesis to assess therapeutic efficacy. In a 4T1 tumor-bearing mouse, this combined strategy reduced the number of abnormal vascular branches by ≈50% at each time point and significantly prolonged the survival time of mice. This study introduces a novel therapeutic paradigm that integrates tumor eradication with concurrent nanomedicine-driven vascular repair, paving the way for more effective and durable treatment strategies for tumors.

Investigations on the NIR Fluorescence Band Modulation of Bi-Doped Silica-Based Glasses and Fibers

Qianhong Zheng,Genying Zeng,Chenxing Liao,Huoming Huang,Weixiong You,Xinyu Ye,Liaolin Zhang

Bi-doped glasses and fibers have been widely applied in solid-state and fiber lasers. However, the mechanism underlying near-infrared (NIR) luminescence remains unclear, and Bi-related luminescence centers (BLCs) are prone to alteration during fiber fabrication, making it challenging to achieve high-performance Bi-doped glass fibers. In this work, Bi-, Bi-Al-, and Bi-Ge-doped silica glasses were investigated to elucidate the origin of NIR luminescence. Two broad NIR fluorescence bands were observed in silica glasses, originating from distinct BLCs. The longer-wavelength fluorescence band at 1423 nm, demonstrating sensitivity to Bi doping concentration and homogeneity, is attributed to Bi clusters (aggregates of Bi+ions), whereas the shorter-wavelength emission, independent of Bi concentration, originates from isolated Bi+ions. A vacuum-assisted melting-in-tube method with a single-step heating process was employed to fabricate Bi-doped silica-based glasses and fibers. The fluorescence bands of the fibers remained consistent with those of the precursor glasses, indicating no new BLCs were formed during fiber fabrication. The modulation of fluorescence bands was primarily governed by Bi cluster formation. Suppressing Bi clustering through co-doping with Al/Ge or optimizing fabrication conditions offers an effective route to tailor the fluorescence properties of Bi-doped glasses and fibers.

Bioinspired 3D-Printed NIR-Responsive MXene-Based Multifunctional Eutectogel Microneedles for Personalized Infected Wound Healing

Huan Liu,Aminov Nail,Decheng Meng,Liran Zhu,Xiaohan Guo,Cong Li,Xiaoqing Ye,Huanjun Li

Infected wound healing remains a significant clinical challenge, demanding innovative therapeutic strategies to simultaneously address bacterial elimination, tissue regeneration, and controlled drug delivery. Inspired by the hierarchical structure of crocodile teeth, a bioinspired, 3D-printed microneedle patch integrating Mxene nanosheets and a polymerizable deep eutectic solvent (PDES) composed of vinyl pyrrolidone (VP), itaconic acid (IA), and N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM) is developed. The resulting MXene-based eutectogel microneedle (MF-MXene@MN) combines photothermal responsiveness, antioxidant activity, and temperature-triggered drug release for photothermal conversion and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging. The gradient-height design inspired by crocodile teeth enhances tissue adhesion, while DLP 3D printing enables personalized wound dressing geometries with <50 µm resolution. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated a 94.88% wound closure rate within 10 days, 3.2-fold increased angiogenesis, 68% reduced bacterial viability ( S. aureus : 32.59%; E. coli : 48.17% under NIR), and pH-/temperature-responsive mangiferin release (88.3% cumulative release via 5 NIR cycles). These synergistic functions promote wound healing, offering superior antibacterial ability, tissue regeneration promotion, and drug release control compared to traditional wound dressings and microneedle systems. This multifunctional platform integrates bioinspired design, stimuli-responsive materials, and additive manufacturing, providing a transformative solution for precision wound management.
