Developing highly efficient and convenient nanofibrous composites holds great significance for the separation of water-in-oil emulsions. In this paper, we present a reusable porous fiber composite material obtained by using stearoyl chloride modified cellulose and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) for electrospinning. The modified cellulose stearyl ester (CSE) enhances the hydrophobicity and lipophilicity of the composites. The PVDF/CSE-8:2 nanofibrous membrane exhibits a water contact angle of up to 155°, a separation flux of up to 2715 L·m −2 ·h −1 , and a separation efficiency of over 97% under gravity for oil-water surfactant-stabilized emulsions. Simultaneously, the interaction between CSE and PVDF improves the mechanical properties of the nanofibrous membrane, with the tensile strength of the PVDF/CSE-8:2 nanofibrous membrane (24.3 MPa) being twice that of pure PVDF. Thus, composite nanofibrous membranes can be environmentally friendly through the use of sustainable, low-cost biomass resources to reduce the use of petroleum-based polymers. These properties give PVDF/CSE nanofibrous membranes great potential for commercial oil-water separation.

Electrically-driven membrane technology plays a crucial role in water treatment and purification, finding applications in various fields like saline water and wastewater desalination, saline concentration and wastewater recycling. The content of this study is based on dually cross-linking and hot-pressing on a PVDF blend, to fabricate a kind of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) having semi-interpenetrating network and thus improve the defect of the traditional heterogeneous AEMs. The research explores the impact of vinyl imidazole (VIM) and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) monomers, primarily or dually cross-linking, and optimizes the membrane properties through a hot-pressing process. Under these optimized conditions, the resulting membranes exhibit robust mechanical properties and outstanding desalination capabilities, achieving an area resistance of 2.56 Ω cm 2 (comparable to standard homogeneous membranes), a desalination rate of 97.26% (outperforming the Neosepta AMX: 76.90%), and a salt limiting concentration of 3.1 M (surpassing the heterogeneous AEM and Neosepta AMX). Notably, this synthesis method is characterized by its cheap raw material and low energy consumption. This research offers valuable insights for the advancement and large-scale implementation of anion exchange membrane desalination.

The discharge of large volumes of textile dyeing wastewater, characterized by poor biodegradability and high toxicity, poses severe threats to the environment. In this study, polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) membranes were prepared using the nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method, with porous amino-functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Am-MSNs) mixed into the casting solution to fabricate the Am-MSN/PVDF mixed matrix membranes. By varying the amount of Am-MSNs added, the microstructure and overall performance of the membranes were comprehensively analyzed. The results demonstrated that the addition of Am-MSNs significantly enhanced the hydrophilicity of the membranes. The high specific surface area and amino groups of Am-MSNs facilitated interactions with dye molecules, such as Reactive Black 5 (RB5), through hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attraction, and physical adsorption, resulting in a marked improvement in RB5 rejection rates. Static adsorption tests further validated the superior adsorption capacity of the Am-MSN/PVDF mixed matrix membranes for RB5. Additionally, the nanoscale mesoporous structure of Am-MSNs enhanced the mechanical strength of the membranes. The synergistic effects of the mesoporous structure and amino groups significantly increased the efficiency and stability of the Am-MSN/PVDF mixed matrix membranes in dye removal applications, providing an effective and sustainable solution for the treatment of dye-contaminated wastewater.

Piezocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants is emerging as a promising strategy for sustainable water treatment. However, conventional piezocatalysts, such as BaTiO 3 (BT) nanoparticles suffer from limitations such as poor recyclability, nanoparticle agglomeration, and the risk of secondary pollution. This study presents a novel strategy to overcome these limitations by integrating polydopamine (PDA)-modified BT nanoparticles into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes, forming PVDF/BT-PDA x nanocomposites. PDA serves as an effective surface modifier, enhancing the dispersion of BT nanoparticles, promoting the formation of polar β-phase PVDF, and strengthening interfacial interactions within the membrane matrix. The optimized PVDF/BT-PDA 5 membrane, containing 5 wt% PDA-modified BT nanoparticles, achieved a rifampicin degradation efficiency of 72.89 %, significantly surpassing that of unmodified PVDF membranes (47.77 %) and PVDF membranes with unmodified BT nanoparticles (43.4 %). Additionally, the PVDF/BT-PDA 5 membrane maintained over 90 % degradation efficiency after nine cycles, demonstrating excellent stability and reusability. These findings demonstrate that PDA-assisted integration improves both the piezocatalytic performance and recyclability of nanocomposite membranes, offering a promising and sustainable approach for water pollution remediation.

Porous conductive polymer composites are very attractive for static pressure sensing due to high sensitivity and good elasticity contributed by the porous structure , while they are hard to detect dynamic pressure. Herein, we report a porous conductive poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composite capable of detecting static and dynamic pressure over a pressure range of 0–1 MPa, which was fabricated by melt mixing PVDF, polyethylene oxide (PEO) and carbon nanofillers , followed by etching PEO with water. Such porous PVDF composites have a very low percolation threshold (0.035 wt%) of carbon nanostructures (i.e., branched carbon nanotubes) thanks to the selective distribution of conductive fillers in the pore wall after etching. At the same time, the pore size and porosity of the porous PVDF composites can be tuned by the molecular weight (M w ) and blending ratios of two polymers, leading to the kinetically-tailorable blend morphology for tunable mechanical and electrical properties. The as-fabricated porous PVDF composites with a good combination of mechanical properties and electrical conductivities , which can be used as pressure sensors toward wide-range (0–1 MPa) dynamic and static pressure sensing. Such pressure sensors demonstrate potential applications in detecting the degree of finger bending, distinguishing the walking and running, and monitoring a series of technical movements in playing soccer, i.e., static and dynamic exercises.

Dyes and oil substances are two common pollutants in wastewater, and it is highly expected to remove them simultaneously. In this study, MgFe 2 O 4 was synthesized by co-precipitation and then loaded onto polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane to fabricate a MgFe 2 O 4 -PVDF composite membrane, which was successfully employed for concurrent dye degradation through peroxymonosulfate activation and separation of oil-in-water emulsions through one-step single-pass filtration. Under optimum conditions, both Rhodamine B (RhB) and hexane could be efficiently removed by 99.21 % and 99.89 % respectively. The effects of pH, inorganic ions and humic acid were studied, and the system showed wide applicability and good reusability. The reaction mechanism for RhB degradation was proposed based on quenching tests, open circuit potential test, galvanic oxidation process and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The degradation pathway of RhB was proposed according to density function theory calculations for both RhB and its deprotonated counterpart deH-RhB as well as LC-MS analysis, and toxicity evaluation was also performed. The MgFe 2 O 4 -PVDF/PMS system may offer a possible solution for the efficient remediation of complex wastewaters.

Polymer composites combining high dielectric permittivity ( ε ), low dielectric loss, and superior breakdown strength ( E b ) exhibit significant industrial application prospects. To achieve excellent overall dielectric properties in calcium copper titanate (CCTO)/poly (vinylidene fluoride, PVDF) composites, the alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) encapsulated CCTO particles were prepared via a sol-gel technology and subsequently added into PVDF to explore the interlayer’ impact on the morphology and dielectric performance. The results demonstrate that the Al 2 O 3 shell simultaneously improves interfacial compatibility between the two components and thereby reduces both dielectric loss and electrical conductivity in the CCTO@Al 2 O 3 /PVDF. Moreover, the CCTO@Al 2 O 3 /PVDF composites showcase superior E b relative to pure CCTO/PVDF, as the Al 2 O 3 interlayer homogenizes the electric field distribution by mitigating dielectric mismatch and introduces charge-trapping sites that restrict carrier mobility, thereby mitigating electric field distortion and inhibiting electrical tree growth. Precise regulation and control of the Al 2 O 3 thickness enables effective tuning of the overall dielectric properties in CCTO@Al 2 O 3 /PVDF composites. Theoretical analysis unlocks the fundamental polarization mechanisms and the modulated charge transport behavior in modified CCTO/PVDF composites. This study establishes a novel strategy for developing flexible polymer dielectrics combining concurrently high E b and ε , coupled with low loss, presenting promising application prospects in power electronics and high-voltage insulation systems.

Humidity sensing is of great importance in monitoring moisture levels in the air, which directly impacts health, safety, comfort, and industrial processes. However, current humidity detection technologies still fall short in meeting the requirements of higher-end applications. In this work, high-performance humidity sensors were developed by tuning the hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of polymer blends composed of PVP, PEG, and PVDF, which were integrated onto the surface of surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonators. By carefully adjusting the blend ratio, a porous and layered nanostructure was achieved, significantly enhancing humidity sensing performance. The optimized sensors exhibited a rapid response time of 2.2 s, a short recovery time of approximately 1.2 s, and a large frequency shift of up to 14 MHz under 15–98% RH. In addition, the devices maintained stable operation for over 2000 seconds with neglegible hysteresis, outperforming commercial counterparts in both sensitivity and response speed. These results demonstrate the great potential of the proposed sensor design for future applications requiring fast, accurate, and reliable humidity sensing.

Bisphenol A (BPA) has been widely detected in environmental and human products and has significant health and environmental impacts. Consequently, an innovative molecularly imprinted membrane was fabricated for the selective adsorption of BPA within water environment. Tannic acid (TA), abundant in plants, was employed to effectuate the reduction of AgNO 3 in an environmentally friendly, and gentle manner, imbuing the membrane with antibacterial properties. A functional hydrophilic layer was created utilizing TA and polyimide (PEI), and mild and efficient imprinting was accomplished through dopamine (DA) self-polymerization. Compared with the blank membrane, the contact angle of the molecularly imprinted membranes (PVDF@Ag@P@MIMs) was reduced to 67.62°, and the optimal adsorption capacity was 33.41 mg g −1 . The imprinting factor of the PVDF@Ag@P@MIMs membrane was 2.90, indicating that the membrane could effectively separate BPA. After 6 cycles of utilization, the adsorption loss was only 4.55 %. In addition, the synthesis of PVDF@Ag@P@MIMs is simple and free of pollutants. The experimental results and green synthesis process of the molecularly imprinted membranes indicate that these materials have potential applications in environmental protection, selective separation, chemical industry, and other fields.

Daytime radiative cooling is a technique that relies on reflecting sunlight and radiating heat through mid-infrared wavelengths to cool objects. However, most daytime radiative cooling materials are not transparent, cannot be used for vehicle windows or other objects that need to retain their original color, and are susceptible to rain, dust, and other contamination, resulting in reduced cooling performance. Here, we developed a transparent, self-cleaning, radiative cooling, highly flexible PVDF composite film (PPF film), which was prepared by solvent evaporation phase conversion method and scraping coating method. The preparation method is simple and the material is easy to obtain. The obtained PPF film can be crimped to different degrees, has high flexibility, a transmittance of 94% in the visible light range (380–760 nm), and a water contact angle of 105° and above, and has self-cleaning performance. In the range of 8–13 μm, the average emissivity of the film reached 94.42%. Outdoor experiments show that, on sunny days, the cavity temperature of the device coated with PPF film glass decreases by 5–6 °C compared with that of bare glass, indicating that the PPF film has excellent radiative cooling performance. In addition, it has relatively strong mechanical properties, ultraviolet aging resistance and acid and alkali resistance. The design of the PPF film enables the radiative cooling material to be transparent, self-cleaning and flexible, with broad application prospects in the outer surface of objects requiring light transmission and cooling, such as special-shaped curved surfaces, solar panels, and architectural glass.

Animal carcasses can be harmlessly treated through high-temperature and high-pressure hydrolysis, resulting in the production of bioactive polypeptides. The polypeptides can be effectively separated from other impurities by ultrafiltration (UF) membranes technology. However, membrane fouling is inevitable during filtrating process, which significantly impacts their lifespan and economic efficiency. In this study, the photocatalyst ZnO nanoparticles on the PVDF membrane surface (PVDF/Zn) were fabricated to degrade foulant. Firstly, tannic acid (TA) was blended into the membrane to provide coordination sites to fix Zn 2 ⁺. Then, ZnO nanoparticles was synthesized exclusively on the membrane surface under ultrasonic assistance, where the ultrasonic energy generated by the cavitation bubbles was excluded by the pore size. Chemical composition and morphology characterization were conducted to prove the successful synthesis of ZnO on the membrane surface. The PVDF/Zn membrane demonstrated a flux of 42 L m −2 h −1 and a rejection of 97 % when filtering BSA solution, with a flux recovery rate (FRR) of 80 % after photocatalytic degradation. During the treatment of high-temperature and high-pressure hydrolyzed animal carcass solution (HHAS), the FRR exceeded 90 %, effectively separating impurities from polypeptides. This work provides a novel approach to enhancing the efficiency of treating HHAS and offers new insights into the preparation of photocatalytic membranes.
