Improving ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism of PVDF-CoFe2O4 thick films: Effect of Ethyl acetate and Temperature

Libo Wang,Yuchang Su,Jing Zhang,Hongzhi Zhang,Qiaoqiao Dong

PVDF-CoFe 2 O 4 (CFO) thick membranes were synthesized by solvent casting method. The mixed organic solvents consist of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and Ethyl acetate (EA), in which the mass ratios of NMP and EA (NMP:EA = 1:0, 1:1, and 1:2) and the temperature of solvent evaporation (range from 50 to 80 °C) has been considered. The phase structure, β-PVDF phase content, and electrical and magnetic properties of these membranes were investigated to reveal the effect of EA addition and temperature on these properties. Results manifest that all samples showed coexistence of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties at room temperature. EA addition makes film more compact, which may be responsible for the differences in ferromagnetic properties. Adding EA and enhancing temperature resulted in phase transition of PVDF from α and γ to β, which contributed to membranes’ ferroelectric performances. In all samples, NMP:EA = 1:2 treated at 80 °C exhibits the maximum β-phase fraction and polarization (Pmax) of 87.2% and 2.398 μC cm −2 , respectively. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. PVDF-based composites filled with PZT@Ag core-shell structured particles for enhanced dielectric properties

Lu Jing,Weili Li,Yu Feng,Yulei Zhang,Jun He,Weidong Fei

Polymer-based composites with high dielectric constant and suppressed dielectric loss were successfully fabricated by using PZT@Ag core-shell structured particles as fillers and PVDF as polymer matrix. The PZT@Ag core-shell structured particles were synthesized via conventional solid-state method. The results indicate that the fillers dispersed in the polymer matrix prominently enhance the dielectric constant while keeping the dielectric loss unchanged simultaneously. Composites with high dielectric constant result from the high dielectric constant of PZT itself, the superior interfacial polarization of PZT@Ag core-shell structure and the conductivity of Ag according to percolation theory, while the dielectric loss is suppressed due to the tunneling current decreasing among Ag particles and Coulomb blockade effect.

Electrochemical performance and stability of a PPy/MMT-PVDF/PMMA composite film at high temperature

Shuo Yang,Xuan Li,Huijun Li,Pei Yao

A polypyrrole/montmorillonite-polyvinylidenedifluoride/polymethyl methacrylate (PPy/MMT-PVDF/PMMA) composite film was prepared by a solvent casting technique. The surface morphology and cross-sectional structure of the 12 wt.% PPy/MMT-PVDF/PMMA composite film exhibited porosity with high specific surface area and good adsorption capacity. The 12 wt.% PPy/MMT-PVDF/PMMA composite film shows good electrolyte uptake (241%) and electrochemical stability. The ionic conductivity of the 12 wt.% PPy/MMT-PVDF/PMMA composite film with LiPF 6 organic electrolyte reaches 2.45 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at 20 °C. The Li/LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 cell assembled with the 12 wt.% PPy/MMT-PVDF/PMMA composite film and LiPF 6 organic electrolyte exhibits good capacity retention and cycling performance at 1 C and 60 °C. At the same time, the nucleophilic substitution reacts with the PPy/MMT-PVDF/PMMA composite film and HF from hydrolysis by trace moisture of LiPF 6 in the electrolyte solution, which can inhibit the disproportionation of Mn 3+ in the LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 electrode material and decrease the internal resistance of the cell at high temperature. In conclusion, the PPy/MMT-PVDF/PMMA composite film can be employed in Li-ion batteries.

Preparation and characterization of proton exchange membrane based on polyphosphoric acid modified by PVDF-HFP

Xiangze Cheng,Huaiyang Jin,Chunhui Shen,Shanjun Gao,Jiang Wang,Xi Zhu

A polyphosphoric acid functionalized proton exchange membrane (PEM) was prepared by a ring opening reaction using the epoxycyclohexylethyltrimethoxysilane (EHTMS) and amino trimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP) as raw materials and was modified by poly(vinylidene fluoride)–hexafluoro propylene (PVDF-HFP). The structure of the membranes was characterized by Fourier transform infrared and scanning electron microscopy. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy explores the content of the elements in the membrane related to the ion exchange capacity value. The membranes’ properties including water uptake, swelling ratio, proton conductivity, and hydrolysis stability were studied. Performance tests show that when ATMP/EHTMS = 1/5, conductivity of the PVDF-HFP modified PEMs increased from 0.83 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 20 °C to 9.53 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at 160 °C, the swelling ratio of membranes decreased from 2.71% to 2.13%. The results indicate that the introduction of F atoms is beneficial to increase the proton conductivity and the dimensional stability. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Construction of SiO2@MWNTs incorporated PVDF substrate for reducing internal concentration polarization in forward osmosis

Xuan Zhang,Liang Shen,Chen-Yu Guan,Chu-Xuan Liu,Wan-Zhong Lang,Yan Wang

This work provides a facile and effective way of incorporating SiO 2 @MWNTs in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate to alleviate the internal concentration polarization (ICP) impact of the resultant thin film composite forward osmosis (TFC-FO) membranes for the first time. The in-situ decoration of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as precursor was conducted, resulting in improved hydrophilicity and the excellent dispersion of synthesized SiO 2 @MWNTs in PVDF membrane substrates accordingly. Effects of the SiO 2 @MWNTs concentration on the morphologies and properties of the modified substrates, and further impact on the polyamide (PA) layer structure are investigated via various characterizations. Besides, the intrinsic separation properties and forward osmosis performance of resultant TFC-FO membranes are also systemically studied. In comparison with the control TFC membrane, SiO 2 @MWNT-modified TFC membranes exhibit higher water fluxes with the enhanced membrane selectivity, as indicated by the decreased J S /J V values (from 1.10 to 0.19 g/L). This work therefore presents an alternative approach to prepare TFC-FO membranes with enhanced water flux as well as increased selectivity.

PVDF/palygorskite composite ultrafiltration membranes: Effects of nano-clay particles on membrane structure and properties

Dongyang Wei,Shouyong Zhou,Meisheng Li,Ailian Xue,Yan Zhang,Yijiang Zhao,Jing Zhong,Dawei Yang

Palygorskite (PGS) was incorporated into a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix and PVDF/PGS nanocomposite UF membranes were prepared successfully via a combination of non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) and thermally-induced phase separation (TIPS) processes. The influence of the size of the PGS particles (PGS-L, 450 nm and PGS-S, 302 nm) on the membrane pore structure, morphology, mechanical strength, filtration performance and antifouling property were investigated. The results showed that the PVDF/PGS-S composite membranes had higher porosity and lower overall membrane thickness and skin layer thickness. This directly resulted in better PWF , BSA flux, BSA rejection and FRR for the membranes loaded with PGS-S, when compared with the characteristics of PVDF/PGS-L membranes. Thus, the physical structures are dominant factors in determining the separation performance of PVDF/PGS composite membranes. However, the surface roughness and thermal stability of PVDF/PGS-L membranes were greater than those of PVDF/PGS-S membranes and their surface was also more hydrophilic . Moreover, they exhibited higher mechanical strength owing to stronger binding forces and lower porosity. Thus, the composite properties of PVDF/PGS UF membranes could be adjusted by controlling the scale of the inorganic filler .

Enhancement of Energy Storage Performances in PMMA/PVDF Nanocomposites with Low Dielectric Bismuth Carbonate Nanosheets

XiaoYa Hao,Qiong Fu,YaFei Hou,YuanJie Yan,TingYu Fu,Jing Cuan,Peng Du,LaiHui Luo,WeiPing Li

Both high discharge energy density (Ud) and charge–discharge efficiency (η) for nanocomposites are crucial to the development and application of modern electronic devices. However, the large dielectric contrast and ferroelectric phase greatly limit the improvement of Ud and η of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based nanocomposites. Herein, Bi2O2CO3 (simplified as BOC) nanosheets with low dielectric constant and wide bandgaps and linear poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were filled into PVDF by solution casting to fabricate x vol % BOC/PAPF (PAPF is short for PMMA/PVDF) nanocomposites. The contributions of BOC nanosheets and linear PMMA, especially for the BOC nanosheet, have been systematically studied. Both experimental and simulation results show that BOC nanosheet and PMMA could improve the breakdown strength and reduce the dielectric loss and leakage current of nanocomposites simultaneously, realizing Ud and η improvement at the same time. As a result, the 1.0 vol % BOC/PAPF nanocomposite shows the highest energy storage performance with Ud = 13.68 J/cm3 and η = 85.72%, which is much superior to PVDF. Therefore, this study might provide a proof-of-concept for constructing nanocomposites with excellent Ud and η concurrently.

Enabling high energy storage performance in PVDF-based nanocomposites filled with high-entropy oxide nanofibers

Lu Jing,Weili Li,Chang Gao,Menglu Li,Weidong Fei

Incorporating inorganic ceramic fillers in organic polymer matrix has been demonstrated as the major and effective strategy for excellent energy storage performance. Nevertheless, the excessive addition leads to the deterioration of breakdown strength and energy density , thus impedes the practical application. Herein, a completely new idea of preparing high-entropy oxide (Eu 0.2 Bi 0·2 Y 0·2 La 0·2 Cr 0.2 ) 2 O 3 (EBYLCO) nanofiber fillers is proposed and the EBYLCO-P(VDF-HFP)/PMMA nanocomposites are fabricated with an ultralow filling content. The enhanced entropy in the lattices results in the local polymorphic distortion and effectively increases the degree of the structural disorder. The random stress field and random electric field are remarkably enhanced. The pinning effect produced by the local polymorphic distortion restricts the movements of long polymer chains, which builds a stronger cross-linked network structure, reduces the loss under the strong electric field and further promotes the breakdown strength of the nanocomposites. Besides, the charge-shielding layers between polymer and nanofillers block the injection and transmission of space charges, which also contributes to high breakdown strength. Combining the enhanced breakdown strength of 509.4 kV mm −1 with the significantly increased polarization, the nanocomposite releases a maximum energy density of 15.13 J cm −3 and energy efficiency of 71%. This work is expected to provide a novel design paradigm for the nanofillers and further improves the energy storage capability for the dielectric capacitors.

Preparation and electromagnetic shielding performances of graphene/TPU–PVDF nanocomposites by high-energy ball milling

Dong Wanqiu,He Lin,Chen Chuangqian,Kang Jie,Niu Hongmei,Zhang Jiebing,Li Jin,Li Kanshe

Graphene/polymer nanocomposites have attracted much attention due to their variability and flexibility. In this paper, graphene/polyvinylidene fluoride (graphene/PVDF) and graphene/Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU)–PVDF nanocomposites were successfully prepared by the combined action of viscoelastic matching of polymer and impaction shear field of high-energy ball milling, and the effects of four technological parameters on the exfoliation effect of expanded graphite were investigated. The interlayer exfoliation and graphenization of graphite were realized during the ball milling process. XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, AFM, conductivity test, and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness were used to characterize the structure and performance of the composite. The results show that the graphene thickness in nanocomposites is about 4–7 layers. When the mass fraction of EG is 6%, the conductivity of the composite reaches 0.41 S/m, and the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (EMSE) reaches 15.8 dB. Ball milling together with EG–TPU–PVDF as a grinding agent can effectively realize graphenization of graphite. When the mass fraction of TPU with 44% of hard segment ratio is 10%, graphene thickness in graphene/TPU–PVDF nanocomposites is about 3–5 layers. When the mass fraction of EG is 6%, the electrical conductivity is 1.01 S/m, and the EMSE is 21.4 dB, which shows that the graphene/TPU–PVDF nanocomposites is a typical absorbing type of electromagnetic shielding material.

Hydrophilic porous PVDF membrane embedded with BaTiO3 featuring controlled oxygen vacancies for piezocatalytic water cleaning

Licheng Wan,Wenrou Tian,Najun Li,Dongyun Chen,Qingfeng Xu,Hua Li,Jinghui He,Jianmei Lu

High-efficient and recyclable piezocatalysts are promising to utilize natural mechanical energy in piezocatalytic degradation for environmental purification. Herein, a new piezoelectric membrane with dual piezoelectric potentials was fabricated by embedding piezoelectric BaTiO 3 nanocubes in piezoelectric PVDF polymeric film . In particular, the pre-modified controlled oxygen vacancies in BaTiO 3 nanocubes (BTO-OVs) enhanced the adsorption and activation of dissolved oxygen in water, promoting the generation of reactive radicals. And the PVDF film embedded by BTO-OVs had boosted piezoelectric property and improved hydrophilicity and porosity after socking. Thus, the hydrophilic porous composite membrane (HPVDF/BTO-OVs) had efficient adsorption and piezocatalytic degradation of Bisphenol A in water under ultrasonic vibration and the removal efficiency is 14 times higher than that of pure PVDF film. In addition, the HPVDF/BTO-OVs membrane adhered on impeller can effectively remove BPA under 900 rpm stirring, which provided a promising material for water purification utilizing low-frequency mechanical energy from nature.

Highly sensitive, flexible and wearable piezoelectric motion sensor based on PT promoted β-phase PVDF

Jing Li,Guoyun Zhou,Yan Hong,Wei He,Shouxu Wang,Yuanming Chen,Chong Wang,Yao Tang,Yukai Sun,Yongkang Zhu

Wearable electronic devices with biocompatibility and stability to monitor the practical human physiological states are urgently expected for some intensive disease recovery or healthy fitness improvement. In this work, a highly sensitive piezoelectric sensor with the aid of polythiophene (PT) promoting polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) from α-phase to β-phase was designed. Electric-sensitivity of 4.961 V/N is obtained at the low-pressure and 0.09 N periodic pressure positively produces considerable output open circuit voltage. It is proved that PT facilitates PVDF to accumulate charge carriers at their interfaces, resulting in interface polarization and thus extremely piezoelectric sensitivity. Reliability test suggested the sensor stays stable performance after a long-term (~2.6% decline after 5000 cycles) repetitive deformation. Through the practices of our assembled wearable sensor demonstrating its powerful ability in recording human joint movement and breathing, which also shows that it is very promising in online movement monitoring of personal health.

One-step modification of electrospun PVDF nanofiber membranes for effective separation of oil–water emulsion

Yiling Nie,Shihong Zhang,Yi He,Liyun Zhang,Yuqi Wang,Shuangshuang Li,Na Wang

At present, based on the excellent mechanical properties, high porosity and chemical stability of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofiber membranes, the development of simple methods to achieve hydrophilic modification of electrospun PVDF nanofiber membranes for the treatment of oily wastewater has become a hot but challenging subject of research. Herein, we report a simple one-step method to modify electrospun PVDF nanofiber membranes to change their wettability. Specifically, tannic acid (TA) and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) are deposited on the membrane and the strong oxidizing property of sodium periodate (SP) is used to optimize the wettability of the membrane. Then, a series of characterization methods was used to study the change in the surface morphology and chemical composition of the membrane during the modification process. The modified membrane is superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic with excellent oil adhesion resistance. For the oil–water separation process, the modified membrane was employed in the treatment of oil–water emulsions containing surfactants, exhibiting high flux (1871 L m−2 h−1) and excellent separation efficiency (99.83%) only driven by gravity. Moreover, the membrane retains its separation efficiency (above 90.50%) after ten cycles and exhibits excellent recyclability. Herein, this simple modification method can not only improve the wettability of the PVDF membrane but also takes advantage of the large flux of electrospun membranes to achieve good oil and water separation performance. In addition, the membrane could maintain its stability under harsh conditions. This method can provide a strategy for more studies on electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride nanofiber membranes for oil–water separation.
