In the field of thermal energy storage, organic phase change materials (PCMs) are widely used as functional materials to boost thermal applications. However, there is often a tradeoff between constructing shape-stable composite PCMs with high enthalpy value and those with low leakage rates. Here, we proposed a promising scheme to address this issue. A novel hydrogel consisting of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and covalent organic framework (COF) was prepared via hydrothermal methods, and the rGO–COF ultralight aerogel with a hierarchical porous structure was formed after freeze-drying. The rGO–COF aerogel shows excellent absorption ability and affinity for organic solvents. It can sufficiently adsorb the molten organic PCMs, such as polyethylene glycol (PEG), and synthesize shape-stable composite PCMs with excellent leak resistance. The COF grown on the surface of rGO has a superior affinity for PEG, so rGO–COF aerogel shows an outstanding PEG loading rate of up to 96.1 wt %, which is 1.7 wt % higher than that of rGO aerogel. In addition, the COF effectively reduces the subcooling of PEG/rGO–COF with 20.3%, compared to PEG/rGO. Meanwhile, the prepared PEG/rGO–COF exhibits extremely high enthalpy and relative enthalpy efficiency (164.6 J/g, 97.4%). This demonstrates that a promising direction was highlighte for the preparation of high-enthalpy shape-stable composite organic PCMs in this work.

Developing a photocatalyst that can effectively utilize the full solar spectrum remains a high-priority objective in the ongoing pursuit of efficient light-to-chemical energy conversion. Herein, the ternary nanocomposite g-C3N4/RGO/W18O49 (CN/RGO/WO) was constructed and characterized by a variety of techniques. Remarkably, under the excitation of photon energies ranging from the ultraviolet (UV) to the near-infrared (NIR) region, the photocatalytic performance of the CN/RGO/WO nanocomposite exhibited a significant enhancement compared with single component g-C3N4 or W18O49 nanosheets for the degradation of methyl orange (MO). The MO photodegradation rate of the optimal CN/1.0 wt% RGO/45.0 wt% WO catalyst reached 0.816 and 0.027 min–1 under UV and visible light excitation, respectively. Even under low-energy NIR light, which is not sufficient to excite g-C3N4, the MO degradation rate can still reach 0.0367 h–1, exhibiting a significant enhancement than pure W18O49. The outstanding MO removal rate and stability were demonstrated by CN/RGO/WO nanocomposites, which arise from the synergistic effect of localized surface plasmon resonance effect induced by W18O49 under vis–NIR excitation and the Z-scheme nanoheterojunction of W18O49 and g-C3N4. In this work, we have exploited the great potential of integrating nonmetallic plasmonic nanomaterials and good conductor RGO to construct high-performance g-C3N4-based full-solar spectral broadband photocatalysts.

Nanoscale heterostructured zinc oxide/reduced graphene oxide (ZnO/rGO) materials with p–n heterojunctions exhibit excellent low temperature NO2gas sensing performance, but their doping ratio modulated sensing properties remain poorly understood. Herein, ZnO nanoparticles were loaded with 0.1~4% rGO by a facile hydrothermal method and evaluated as NO2gas chemiresistor. We have the following key findings. First, ZnO/rGO manifests doping ratio-dependent sensing type switching. Increasing the rGO concentration changes the type of ZnO/rGO conductivity from n-type (<0.6% rGO) to mixed n/p -type (0.6~1.4% rGO) and finally to p-type (>1.4% rGO). Second, interestingly, different sensing regions exhibit different sensing characteristics. In the n-type NO2gas sensing region, all the sensors exhibit the maximum gas response at the optimum working temperature. Among them, the sensor that shows the maximum gas response exhibits a minimum optimum working temperature. In the mixed n/p-type region, the material displays abnormal reversal from n- to p-type sensing transitions as a function of the doping ratio, NO2concentration and working temperature. In the p-type gas sensing region, the response decreases with increasing rGO ratio and working temperature. Third, we derive a conduction path model that shows how the sensing type switches in ZnO/rGO. We also find that p–n heterojunction ratio (np–n/nrGO) plays a key role in the optimal response condition. The model is supported by UV-vis experimental data. The approach presented in this work can be extended to other p–n heterostructures and the insights will benefit the design of more efficient chemiresistive gas sensors. Keywords:p–n junctions;ZnO;reduced graphene oxide;rGO;NO2sensing

Dopamine is an important neurotransmitter for organisms and affects their function, so monitoring and detecting dopamine levels are essential. Sensitivity and selectivity of electrochemical sensors for the detection of dopamine usually rely on hybrid nanocomposites. In this context, we designed a micro-regionally restricted hybrid nanocomposite by modulating the micro-nano structure. Using functional groups on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO) to restrict the random growth of tungsten disulfide nanosheets, we obtained a 2D layered material with bidirectional structural support to achieve high specific surface and high activity for application in robust and novel dopamine electrochemical sensors. A facile electrochemical sensor for dopamine detection was fabricated by modifying a screen-printed carbon electrode with the nanocomposite. The sensor exhibits excellent performance of dopamine detection in the wide range of 1 μmol l−1–100 μmol l−1 with a detection limit of 0.2 μmol l−1 and a high sensitivity of 0.56 μA μmol−1 l−1. The optimized sensor shows a good selectivity, satisfactory long-term stability and reproducibility towards DA and a separation of peak potential of 142 mV with uric acid. In addition, the prepared sensor provides favorable recovery in human serum and artificial cerebrospinal solution (aSCF), indicating great potentials in electrochemical detection and biological sensing applications.

To reduce electromagnetic pollution as well as increase the accuracy of high-precision electronic equipment, more attention has been paid to new electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials, which have the advantages of strong absorption, wide absorption bands, and a narrow thickness. In this study, a novel ternary type of the NiS2@rGO/polypyrrole (PPy) sandwich-like structured composites was synthesized via a facile two-step method, in which the hydrothermal method was used to prepare NiS2@rGO binary composites and then the in situ polymerization method was used to synthesize the PPy, which acted as the outer layer of the sandwich-like structure. The morphologies and electromagnetic absorption performance of the NiS2@rGO/PPy were measured and investigated. A sample with 6 wt% NiS2@rGO/PPy loading paraffin-composite obtained an outstanding reflection loss (RL) of −58.7 dB at 16.44 GHz under a thickness of 2.03 mm. Simultaneously, the effective electromagnetic wave absorption bandwidth for RL < −10 dB, which covered 7.04 to 18.00 GHz (10.96 GHz), was achieved by changing the thickness of the absorber from 2.0 to 3.5 mm. The results not only suggest that the NiS2@rGO/PPy composite has excellent performance in the field of EMW absorption but also prove that the novel sandwich-like structure can contribute to appropriate impedance matching through multiple relaxation and interfacial polarization processes.Keywords:graphene;polypyrrole;sandwich-like structure;electromagnetic absorption

Incorporation of traditional perovskites into reduced graphene oxide (RGO) is an effective strategy to develop useful microwave absorbents. Taking advantage of the suitable impedance of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO), a novel and available microwave absorber was obtained. Here, we showed an outstanding and stable RGO material decorated with LSMO that can be used as an active component of microwave absorption devices. The as-prepared LSMO/RGO composites adopted the merits of RGO and LSMO and provided good properties, such as a controllable dissipation ability, optimized impedance matching, and broadened effective frequency bandwidth. For example, the minimum reflection loss (RL) value of LSMO/RGO composites with a 60% loading filler ratio reached −38.81 dB with a matching thickness of only 1.7 mm. Furthermore, the effective frequency bandwidth can be as wide as 5.64 GHz, with a thickness of 1.95 mm. Therefore, this work initiates a brand new avenue for artificial research of new materials for electromagnetic wave absorption.

A nanocomposite of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-HKUST-1 based on graphene oxide (GO) was modified by polydopamine (PDA). These nanomaterials formed the PDA/RGO/HKUST-1 membrane over the surface of the commercial cellulose acetate membrane support layer to treat dye wastewater. The membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results showed enhanced membrane separation performance because of improved surface flatness and layer spacing. With the insertion of porous HKUST-1 and the cross-linking modification of PDA, the PDA/RGO/HKUST-1 membranes exhibited excellent flux, rejection, hydrophilic, and anti-fouling performance. The composite membrane could effectively reject methylene blue and Congo red, with removal rates of 99.8% and 89.2%, respectively. In addition, the flux of the PDA/RGO/HKUST-1 membrane increased 31-fold with the addition of HKUST-1 and PDA. Overall, the prepared high-flux composite membrane can be used as an excellent material in a variety of environmental applications.

To develop a highly sensitive colorimetric detection method for the diabetes early diagnosis by determining the glucose in urine instead of blood can avoid the painful blood collection and risks of cross infection. In this paper, novel artificial enzyme mimics were formed by loading bimetallic nanoparticle Fe Pd on the surface of reduced graphene (rGO). Also, we proposed a Fe Pd/rGO coupled with portable paper sensor for the detection of glucose in urine. The results indicated that urine glucose can be sensitively detected in a wide range of 1–200 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.76 μM. Most important, the color difference along with the increase of urine glucose concentration can be easily distinguished by naked eyes, which is important to its practical usage in screening and diagnosis of diabetes. Furthermore, the reason of the high sensitivity of Fe Pd/rGO towards glucose was investigated in detail via various probing experiments. Fe Pd/rGO has an artificial enzyme mimic activity, which can catalyze O 2 and generate H 2 O 2 from glucose oxidation . The electron transfer between Fe Pd and H 2 O 2 will produce • OH that can oxidize terephthalic acid (TMB) by emitting a blue color. The findings in this study provide a promising alternative for the early screening and diagnosis of diabetes.

Developing high energy density room-temperature sodium sulfur (RT Na-S) batteries relies on the design of delicate structure that can be efficiently injected sulfur and enhance the cycle life of electrode active material. Herein, a three dimensional (3D) hierarchical cathode substrate with VO 2 nanoflowers as catalyst in situ grown on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for sulfur cathodes are designed and prepared. In this novel structure, the electronic conductivity of sulfur cathode can be greatly improved due to the high electrical conductivity of rGO substrate. More importantly, the catalytic effect of VO 2 accelerates the conversion long-chain NaPSs to Na 2 S 2 /Na 2 S, and enhances the cycle capability, which can be validated by experimental data. As a result, the as-obtained rGO/VO 2 /S composites achieves an initial reversible capacity of 876.4 mA h g −1 at 0.2C. Moreover, the capacity of 156.1 mA h g −1 is demonstrated after long-cycling term of 1000 cycles at 2C and high cycle stability of only 0.07% capacity decay per cycle is exhibited.

A nanoscale petal-like α-Ni(OH) 2 /reduced graphene oxide (α-Ni(OH) 2 /RGO) composite was synthesized with the one-step microwave method. α-Ni(OH) 2 particles with sizes of approximately 200 nm are uniformly distributed on the reduced graphene oxide sheet in the sample. When used as an electrode for alkaline rechargeable batteries, the discharge capacity of the α-Ni(OH) 2 /RGO composite reaches 333.5 mAh/g at 0.2C and 247.1 mAh/g at 10 C, respectively, with an excellent rate capability. After 2000 cycles, the capacity of the electrode is insignificantly attenuated, indicating a high capacity retention and cycling stability. The outstanding electrochemical properties are attributed to the nanoscale petal-like structure α-Ni(OH) 2 anchoring on the RGO sheets, which facilitates ion diffusion and increases the active surface, which is effectively reacting with the electrolyte. The nanoscale petal-like electrode material fabricated in this study provides clues to address the problem of energy applications of high-performance alkaline rechargeable batteries.

The passivation of lithium metal anodes to mitigate an unstable solid electrolyte interface and parasitic dendrite growth is the key premise for their successful implementation in lithium metal batteries. Herein, aiming to simultaneously reduce the interfacial resistance and to suppress lithium dendrites, we coated lithium metal anodes with two-dimensional (2D) rGO layers prepared via a solvent-evaporation-assisted self-assembly. Upon lithiation/delithiation, the rGO coating cracked into mosaic-like flakes, in between which the interconnected gaps served as the passage for uniform lithium plating/stripping. Half cells composed of a sandwich Cu/Li/rGO electrode vs. Cu foils revealed much improved Li usage and coulombic efficiencies. Through ex situ SEM imaging and XPS depth profiling, a comprehensive view of Li intercalation, deposition, and dendrite suppression on the rGO coating was obtained. As a result of the improved kinetics of Li transportation, excellent electrochemical performances were demonstrated in symmetric gLi‖gLi cells with a stabilized overpotential of only 87.9 mV at 5 mA cm−2 over 600 cycles, and in Li–S batteries with a stabilized capacity of 1200 mA h g−1 at 1C near 1000 cycles.
