BACKGROUND The conversion of glucose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) involves the isomerization of glucose to fructose catalyzed by Lewis acid and subsequent dehydration of fructose catalyzed by Brönsted acid. In this work, in order to obtain a high yield of 5-HMF, a series of Sn-Al-Beta catalysts containing both Lewis and Brönsted acid sites were prepared by a convenient solid state ion exchange (SSIE) method using partially dealuminated Beta zeolite and tin(II) acetate. RESULTS The obtained bifunctional catalysts were investigated for one-pot production of 5-HMF from glucose in the ionic liquid (IL) [C 4 mim]Cl. Among various catalysts, Sn-Al-Beta- 4 - 8 exhibited the best catalytic performance, giving a 5-HMF yield of 54% under optimal reaction conditions (393 K, 2 h), along with a glucose conversion of 81%. The Sn-Al-Beta- 4-8 catalyst and IL were regenerated by the extraction of 5-HMF, and the reactivity was reserved after five runs of recycling. In addition to glucose, the Sn-Al-Beta- 4-8 /[C 4 mim]Cl system was also proven to have the potential to effectively convert other carbohydrates into 5-HMF. CONCLUSION The results suggested that the catalyst is convenient to prepare and has preferable efficiency and stability in the conversion of carbohydrates into 5-HMF. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Refining lignin for aromatic hydrocarbons was crucial in the development of clean energy. The most effective way to enhance the carbon efficiency of the raw materials was to reduce the hydrogen consumption and maximize the retention of aromatic ring by directly breaking the C Ar O bond. In this regard, Sn was introduced to regulate the selectivity of Ni/SiO 2 for m-cresol hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) products at low hydrogen consumption. Thanks to the formation of the Ni-Sn alloy in the system, the bimetallic sites synergistically catalyze the C Ar O bond scission through lowering the reaction energy barrier. Further from charge analysis, it was concluded that the charge transfer from Sn to Ni promotes the hydrogenolysis, and the charge transfer between the slab and the adsorbate provides the possibility for the occurrence of direct deoxygenation reaction. The COHP analysis resulted that the introduction of Sn accelerated the C Ar O bond cleavage. Interestingly, another deoxygenation pathway was proposed from the isomerization conversion of m-cresol to dienone intermediate (3-methyl-3,5-cyclohexadienone) in the calculation of transition state. Further HDO can form toluene effortlessly due to the presence of the oxyphilic metal Sn. This also explains the high selectivity of Ni-Sn to toluene. Moreover, the introduction of the Sn promoter effectively prolongs the lifetime of the catalyst by enhancing the tolerance to carbon deactivation.

Multi-component promoters may efficiently improve the catalytic performance of the primary Cu-based catalysts in the Rochow-Müller reaction, but this approach is not well explored, and the roles of the promoters are not very clear. Herein, we report the ZrO 2 -supported CuO catalyst (CuO/ZrO 2 ) modified with a co-promoter of ZnO, Sn, and CuP prepared by a simple dry ball-milling method. The co-promoter could significantly increase the amount of surface adsorbed oxygen and improve the reducing ability of catalysts, facilitating the formation of the active Cu 3 Si phase and further advancing dimethyldichlorosilane ((CH 3 ) 2 SiCl 2 , M2) selectivity and Si conversion in the Rochow-Müller reaction. Compared to the state-of-the-art commercial catalyst, these CuO/ZrO 2 catalysts with the co-promoters all showed enhanced catalytic activity. Especially, the CuO/ZrO 2 catalyst with the co-existence of ZnO, Sn, and CuP promoters achieved the highest M2 selectivity and Si conversion, attributed to its most abundant surface adsorption oxygen and the strongest reducibility. This work opens up a new avenue to improve the catalytic activity of Cu-based catalysts for the Rochow-Müller reaction.

Silicon monoxide (SiO) has aroused increased attention as one of the most promising anodes for high-energy density Li-ion batteries. To enhance the initial Coulombic efficiencies (ICE) and cycle stability of SiO-based anodes, a new facile composition and electrode design strategy have been adapted to fabricate a SiO–Sn–Co/graphite (G) anode. It achieves a unique structure where tiny milled SiO–Sn–Co particles are dispersed among two graphite layers. In this hybrid electrode, Sn–Co alloys promoted Li + extraction kinetics, and the holistic reversibility of SiO and graphite enhanced the electrical conductivity. The SiO–Sn–Co/G electrode delivered an average ICE of 77.6% and a reversible capacity of 640 mAh g −1 at 800 mA g −1 , and the capacity retention was above 98% after 100 cycles, which was much higher than that of the SiO with an ICE of 55.3% and a capacity retention of 50%. These results indicated that this was reliable method to improve the reversibility and cycle ability of the SiO anode. Furthermore, based on its easy and feasible fabrication process, it may provide a suitable choice to combine other alloy anodes with the graphite anode.

This work presents a novel method to selectively convert levoglucosan to lactic acid (LA) via initially adding LA as the Brønsted acid together with modified Sn-β as the Lewis acid. Sn-β catalysts exchanged with various cations significantly enhance the yield of LA, following the order Sn-β < Sn-β–Na < Sn-β–K < Sn-β–Mg, Sn-β–Ca. The role of exchanged alkali ions stems from removing the remaining Brønsted acid sites in the zeolite and tuning the framework oxygen with more Lewis base sites. The exchange with alkaline earth cations such as Ca2+ and Mg2+ appears to be more effective in promoting the retro-aldol condensation due to the synergetic effect of their stronger Lewis acid that can stabilize the oxygen atom of deprotonated alkoxides during the reaction. The LA yield from levoglucosan can reach up to 66% on Sn-β–Ca under the optimized conditions. We also demonstrated that such a synergetic effect of alkaline-earth ion exchanged Sn-β shows great universality toward enhanced retro-aldol condensation, which can significantly promote the yield of methyl lactate over glucose conversion in methanol solvent.

In this study, Ti-Si-Sn-Sb/GAC particle electrodes were prepared by sol–gel method. The particle electrodes were characterized by SEM, XRD, EDX, and BET then used to carry out three-dimensional (3D) electrocatalytic oxidation degradation on simulated refractory p-aminophenol (PAP) wastewater. The effects of initial pH, cell voltage, aeration flow rate and initial PAP concentration on degradation experiments were investigated. Under the optimal conditions, the PAP and COD removal rates were 89.45% and 75.17% respectively. In addition, the possible degradation mechanism of PAP was further investigated by UV–Vis and HPLC. Finally, it was found that the Ti-Si-Sn-Sb/GAC particle electrodes with high catalytic activity and excellent stability could significantly improve the PAP wastewater removal efficiency.

The sulfide-based solid electrolyte (SSE) has been considered as a strong candidate for potential uses in all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs). Nevertheless, most of the reported SSEs are plagued with their intrinsic air-sensitive behaviors and Li-incompatibility, which largely preclude scalable fabrication and widespread practical application. Herein, we report the Li6+xSb1−xSnxS5I (LSSSI-x) SSEs using nontoxic inexpensive Sn substitution to deal with these issues. The ionic conductivity of Li6+xSb1−xSnxS5I can achieve a maximum value of 3.49 × 10−4 S cm−1 at room temperature when x = 0.4, which is over 40-fold that of the pristine Li6SbS5I. The Li symmetric cell with I-rich Li6.4Sb0.6Sn0.4S5I (LSSSI-0.4) electrolyte delivers a stable Li+ plating/stripping behavior over 450 h at a current density of 0.1 mA cm−2. Benefiting from the decent Li-compatibility of LSSSI-0.4, the assembled ASSLB with LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2-based composite cathode and Li-metal anode displays good cycling performance. The LSSSI-0.4 electrolyte also possesses excellent moisture stability. ASSLB using the dried LSSSI-0.4 electrolyte still exhibits a well-maintained initial discharge capacity of 184.0 mA h g−1 at 0.1C and an impressive capacity retention rate of 70.6% after 600 cycles at 0.2C. This work offers a feasible option with superior integrated properties to push forward the advancement of high-performance ASSLBs.

Graphical The development of Zn ion energy storage devices is seriously hindered by the drawbacks of dendrite growth, low coulomb efficiency, and volume expansion in the plating/stripping process of Zn metal electrodes. In this paper, the electrode which optimized by chemically plating Sn on Cu foam with high surface area and high HER overpotential can provide a large number of active sites for homogeneous nucleation of Zn metal and alleviate HER side reactions, thus improving the reversibility of Zn electrodeposition. Zn ion energy storage devices have received widespread attention because of their high safety, environmental friendliness, low cost, and high energy density. However, Zn metal anodes usually suffer from disadvantages such as dendrite growth, low coulombic efficiency, and volume expansion during plating/stripping, which severely hampers the practical applications. Here, we construct 3D Zn frameworks by exploring different conductive hosts and modify 3D hosts by plating Sn to suppress Zn dendrites and side reactions. The electrode which optimized by electroplating Zn after chemically plating Sn on Cu foam (Sn−Cu foam@Zn) exhibits stable polarization voltage distribution and almost 100% coulombic efficiency over 200 cycles of Zn plating/stripping. Furthermore, when pairing with V 2 O 5 cathode, the full cell showed fast reaction kinetics and a capacity of 113 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at a current density of 1 A g −1 , which is 90.4% of the initial capacity. This work provides a new strategy for the development of high-performance Zn anodes.

Post-treatment has been recognized as one of the effective methods for passivating the underlying defects in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), but little attention has been paid to how to pick suitable passivation agents with diverse isomers for efficient PSCs, particularly for the tin–lead (Sn–Pb) mixed PSCs. Here, we introduce the dependence of the power conversion efficiency (PCE) on a dipole moment for surface passivator screening, in which we chose three trifluoromethyl-phenylethylamine hydroiodide (CF3-PEAI) isomers as surface-treatment materials for hole-transport-layer-free (HTL-free) Sn–Pb mixed PSCs. The different positions of the −CF3 group for the CF3-PEAI isomer result in different dipole moments, which influences the interaction between CF3-PEAI and lead iodide. The para position CF3 with the highest dipole moment exhibits a higher PCE than the ortho-position with a lower dipole moment, which is attributed to the large dipole moment on the surface that could tune the surface polarity from p-type to n-type, facilitating electron charge transport in the HTL-free Sn–Pb mixed PSCs. An ultrathin 2D layer is formed on the perovskite surface to passivate the surface defects, which is responsible for the enhancement of the PCE and stability of the PSCs. As a result, the open-circuit voltage (VOC) of the device is improved from 0.775 to 0.824 V, yielding a champion PCE of 20.17%, which is one of the highest PCEs among the reported HTL-free Sn–Pb mixed PSCs. The device also shows improved stability with remaining 75% of its initial PCEs after storage in N2 for 700 h.

With the unprecedented rise of flexible electronic technology, it is imperative to develop the matched flexible power supply systems. Magnesium ion battery (MIB), as a promising next-generation battery system, shows significant potential as a power source for flexible electronic devices. However, the research on flexible MIB remains in its infancy, and the exploration of novel and reliable flexible electrodes is crucial. Herein, a binder-free and flexible self-supporting electrode with bimetallic Bi–Sn nanoparticles anchored in carbon nanofiber (CNF@Bi-Sn) was fabricated via electrospinning method combined with subsequent calcinations, and applied to MIBs for the first time. The CNF@Bi-Sn simultaneously integrated the advantages of hierarchical porous carbon nanofiber framework, the homodisperse nanosized Bi-Sn particles, and the increased phase/grain boundaries, which were beneficial for improving the structural stability and facilitating Mg 2+ diffusion kinetics. The CNF@Bi-Sn alloy anode demonstrated impressive performance with high initial specific capacity of 738mAh/g, exceptional rate capability and outstanding cycling stability of 150mAh/g at 40 mA g −1 after 100 cycles. Significantly, the quantitative kinetic analysis, ex-situ SEM, TEM and XRD were conducted to reveal the structural evolution during cycling and the magnesium storage mechanism based on reversible two-phase alloying/de-alloying transformation reactions. Furthermore, the full batteries were assembled, demonstrating its potential for practical applications. This protocol sheds light on exploring high-performance flexible self-supporting alloy anode for future flexible power systems.

SN-38 is the active metabolite of irinotecan and acts as an effective topoisomerase I inhibitor with therapeutic effects on many malignant tumors, including some drug-resistant cancers. However, the poor solubility, low bioavailability, and severe dose-dependent toxicity limits the clinical application of SN-38. Currently, emerging macrophage membrane-coated nanoparticles provide an efficient biomimetic approach to develop novel SN-38 formulations for the reduction of its side effects. Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a promising methods in tumor treatment to thermally ablate tumors using various materials such Prussian blue nanoparticles (NPs) and can combined with chemotherapy to synergistically work. There is no report that combined SN38 and photothermal therapy for the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC). SN38-PB@CM NPs were constructed by loading SN-38 into macrophage cell membrane-coated hollow mesoporous Prussian blue (PB) NPs. The morphology, size and zeta potential were evaluated by transmission microscopy and dynamic light scatter (DLS). Coomassie bright blue staining was performed to assess total protein profile. The photothermal properties of it were also investigated via near-infrared imaging. CCK8 and calcein-AM/PI staining were used to evaluate cell viability. Flow cytometry was performed to assess cell apoptosis. The fluorescent microscopy was used to observe cellular uptake of SN38-PB@CM NPs to assess its internalization in vitro. The biodistribution, tumor-targeting efficacy, antitumor efficacy and safety of SN38-PB@CM NPs in vivo were assessed in CT26 tumor-bearing mice via In Vivo Imaging System. SN38-PB@CM NPs were successfully constructed and exhibited a uniform size distribution (140.5 ± 4.3 nm) and an excellent drug-loading capacity (5.61 ± 0.64%). SN38-PB@CM NPs showed stable release properties within 72 h. It can also enhance the selective intracellular delivery of SN38 in vitro and showed good near-infrared (NIR) photothermal properties. And the NPs showed excellent tumor targeting, effective photothermal therapy, improved biosafety and antitumor efficacy on CT26-bearing mice. Multifunctional SN38-PB@CM NPs could achieve improved biosafety, great tumor-targeting, high-efficiency PTT and excellent antitumor efficacy, which provided a promising and attractive combination therapy for the treatment of CRC. Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 semiconductor is a promising absorber layer material in thin film solar cells due to its own virtues. In this work, high quality Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 thin films have been successfully fabricated by an ethanol-based sol–gel approach. Different from those conventional sol–gel approaches, SnS2 was used as the tin source to replace the most commonly used SnCl2 in order to avoid the possible chlorine contamination. In addition, sodium was found to improve the short-circuit current and fill factor rather than the open-circuit voltage due to the decrease of the thickness of small-grained layer. The selenized Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 thin films showed large densely packed grains and smooth surface morphology, and a power conversion efficiency of 6.52% has been realized for Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 thin film solar cell without antireflective coating.
