Isothiourea-based burial interface modification for high-efficiency and stable perovskite solar cells

Zipeng Tang,Chunlong Wang,Chunying Ma,Wenzhen Zou,Chao Wei,Xuanshuo Shanguan,Lu Zhou,Xiaoyu Li,Yongchun Ye,Liguo Gao,Yusran Sulaiman,Tingli Ma,Chu Zhang

Senior oxygen-related defects including O vacancies and dangling O-H bonds in the SnO2 ETL result in non-radiative carrier recombination, which directly affect the efficiency performance and stability of perovskite solar cells. Meanwhile, undercoordinated Pb2+ can also induce non-radiative recombination of photogenerated carriers and provide a pathway for ion migration, leading to further degradation of solar cell performance. To tackle such issues, interface modification with multi-functional small molecules is usually considered a convenient way to inhibit non-radiative recombination and improving carrier transportation. Here, we employ two isothiourea group-based bridge molecule CESC (S-carboxyethyl isothiourea hydrochloride) together with DASC (S-[2-(Dimethylamino) ethyl] isothiourea Dihydrochloride) to passivate the burial interface between SnO2 and perovskite, realizing the dual functional passivation towards both filling O2- vacancy in SnO2 lattice and binding the uncoordinated ions. Perovskite solar cells fabricated with this method shows well-improved optoelectronic performance as well as resistance against ambient moisture. Compared with the control device (17.20%), the efficiency of the devices modified by DASC and CESC increased to 18.75% and 19.04%, respectively. The unpackaged solar cells treated with CESC and DASC maintained 91.2% and 89.5% of their initial efficiency, respectively, after aging for 1000 hours in a high humidity environment.

Influence of solvent on the structure and electrochemical performances of Sn-based anode for lithium-ion battery

Lixiong Yin,Simin Chai,Jianfeng Huang,Xingang Kong,Jia Wang,Peijie Bai

In present work, Sn-based composites have been successfully synthesized by the solvothermal method. The composition and content of the solvent have crucial influences on the phase composition, crystallinity and morphology of the samples. It is found that the nanoflakes assembling to the spherical SnS 2 /SnO 2 obtained in deionized water (DI w) gradually convert to nanoparticles in anhydrous ethanol (AE) solvent. The hierarchical SnS 2 /SnO 2 composites obtained in AE solvent exhibit excellent electrochemical performances. The initial discharge capacity of the anode can reach to 1420.06   mA   h   g −1 at 100   mA   g −1 for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), and the capacity can maintain 588.15   mA   h   g −1 after 50 cycles. Compared with other Sn-based anode materials , the SnS 2 /SnO 2 sample obtained in the AE solvent can still retain a stable discharge capacity of 559.16   mA   h   g −1 even at 800   mA   g −1 . The results obtained in the work reveal the influence of the solvent on the morphology of Sn-based samples and the potential of the sphere-like SnS 2 /SnO 2 structure as LIBs anode.

A single dual-mode gas sensor for early safety warning of Li-ion batteries: Micro-scale Li dendrite and electrolyte leakage

Wenjun Yan,Zhishen Jin,Zhengyang Lin,Shiyu Zhou,Yonghai Du,Yulong Chen,Houpan Zhou

Li dendrites and electrolyte leakage are common causes of Li-ion battery failure. H2, generated by Li dendrites, and electrolyte vapors have been regarded as gas markers of the early safety warning of Li-ion batteries. SnO2-based gas sensors, widely used for a variety of applications, are promising for the early safety detection of Li-ion batteries, which are necessary and urgently required for the development of Li-ion battery systems. However, the traditional SnO2 sensor, with a single signal, cannot demonstrate intelligent multi-gas recognition. Here, a single dual-mode (direct and alternating current modes) SnO2 sensor demonstrates clear discrimination of electrolyte vapors and H2, released in different states of Li-ion batteries, together with principal component analysis (PCA) analysis. This work provides insight into the intelligent technology of single gas sensors.

Dual passivation effects of ionic liquids enable efficient and stable perovskite solar cells

Ye Xiaofang,Cai Hongkun,Xu Tie,Ni Jian,Zhang Jianjun

In recent years, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been attracting more and more attention. Although perovskite materials have high defect tolerance, defects remain the main factor that seriously affects the efficiency and stability of PSCs. Herein, the ionic liquid of 1-butyl, 3-methylimidazolium acetate ([BMIM][ACO]) was introduced into the SnO2/perovskite interface for the first time. Thanks to the dipoles formed by ILs spontaneously, the work function of SnO2 was reduced and the transport ability of carriers was improved as well. Moreover, the Lewis acidity and lone pair electrons of [BMIM][ACO] contribute to the passivation of I– defects, Pb2+ defects, or Pb-I anti site defects. In addition, the presence of dipoles will repel the approach of photogenerated holes and the reverse transport of electrons, reducing the recombination of defect sites through field-effect passivation. The solar cell with efficiency of 19.43% was obtained under such a dual passivation effect, and the best device maintained 75.21% of the initial efficiency after 80 h of continuous illumination.

Boron-Doped, Carbon-Coated SnO2/Graphene Nanosheets for Enhanced Lithium Storage

Yuxin Liu,Ping Liu,Dongqing Wu,Yanshan Huang,Yanping Tang,Yuezeng Su,Fan Zhang,Xinliang Feng

Graphical Doping for better anode s: Boron-doped carbon-coated SnO 2 /graphene hybrids (BCTGs) were fabricated by hydrothermal carbonization of sucrose in the presence of SnO 2 /graphene (TG) nanosheets and phenylboronic acid or boric acid as dopant source to give BSTGs and subsequent thermal treatment (see figure; GO: graphene oxide). Owing to the dopant B atoms in the hybrid and its 2D core–shell architecture, the hybrid obtained with phenylboronic acid as B source exhibits outstanding cycle stability after 360 cycles and an excellent rate capability at high current density. Heteroatom doping is an effective method to adjust the electrochemical behavior of carbonaceous materials. In this work, boron-doped, carbon-coated SnO 2 /graphene hybrids (BCTGs) were fabricated by hydrothermal carbonization of sucrose in the presence of SnO 2 /graphene nanosheets and phenylboronic acid or boric acid as dopant source and subsequent thermal treatment. Owing to their unique 2D core–shell architecture and B-doped carbon shells, BCTGs have enhanced conductivity and extra active sites for lithium storage. With phenylboronic acid as B source, the resulting hybrid shows outstanding electrochemical performance as the anode in lithium-ion batteries with a highly stable capacity of 1165 mA h g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 after 360 cycles and an excellent rate capability of 600 mA h g −1 at 3.2 A g −1 , and thus outperforms most of the previously reported SnO 2 -based anode materials.

Selective epichlorohydrin-sensing performance of Ag nanoparticles decorated porous SnO2 architectures

Zhenglin Zhang,Haiyan Song,Shishu Zhang,Junyan Zhang,Wenya Bao,Quanqin Zhao,Xiang Wu

Epichlorohydrin (ECH) is mainly an industrial raw material, while it is toxic and dangerous for human health, so finding a simple and effective method for detecting ECH gas is challenging work. Porous SnO2 structures are successfully obtained through a hydrothermal method using SnCl4·5H2O as the tin source and water as the solvent. Ag nanoparticle (NPs) decorated porous SnO2 structures have also been prepared by the impregnation method. The morphology and structure of the as-prepared products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and the nitrogen adsorption–desorption technique. The as-synthesized nanostructures, with diameters ranging from 4–5 μm, are composed of porous nanosheets with an average thickness of 60 nm. The gas sensing properties of the Ag NPs decorated porous SnO2 structures for ECH gas were investigated in detail, and the results showed that the 10% Ag NPs decorated porous SnO2 structures gas sensor was the optimum sensor, demonstrating a response (S = 50) for 100 ppm of ECH gas, while the working temperature was decreased by about 180 °C. In addition, it showed a low detection level (0.5 ppm) for ECH gas, good reproducibility and repeatability, and long-term stability, implying a promising application in detecting ECH gas.

rGO/SnO2 nanocomposite based sensor for ethanol detection under low temperature

Dongmin An,Jialun Dai,Zongwei Zhang,Yingyue Wang,Nan Liu,Yunling Zou

In this study, series of rGO/SnO 2 nanocomposites were synthesized with hydrothermal method by mixing graphene oxide (GO) solution and pre-prepared SnO 2 quantum dot solution. The phase structure and morphology of the as-obtained rGO/SnO 2 nanocomposites were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV–vis absorption spectrums, Raman spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique. The detailed investigation of gas-sensing properties of rGO/SnO 2 nanocomposites-based sensors exhibited that the gas response of SnO 2 -based sensors to ethanol gas increased with the addition of GO, especially when the GO dosage reached 3.3 wt%, which revealed the highest response value of 48.34–50 ppm ethanol gas at 120 °C. Besides, it also displayed an excellent selectivity, good repeatability and long-time stability. The mechanism of rGO functionalized SnO 2 and enhanced ethanol gas sensing property at relative low temperature was proposed.

SnO2@carbon-nanocage interconnected framework for high-performance sodium metal batteries

Haoguang Lin,Na Li

Sodium metal batteries (SMBs) are regarded as a promising alternative for large-scale energy storage due to the abundance and low cost of sodium. However, the development of SMBs primarily hampered by considerable volume expansion and the gradual pulverization/agglomeration of sodium-affinity sites. These issues cause irreversible damage to the framework and lead to excessive current concentration at the agglomerates, which in turn triggers uneven sodium deposition and sodium dendrites growth. In this work, a novel carbon/SnO 2 composite sodium-plating framework (SnO 2 @DCF) is prepared by first constructing a defective carbon-nanocage interconnected framework (DCF) and subsequently encapsulating SnO 2 nanoparticles within the nanocages. Specifically, the defective carbon-nanocage interconnected framework, provides more Na + migration pathways and buffers volume expansion of sodium metal. Meanwhile, the SnO 2 nanoparticles maintain good dispersion in nanocages during cycling, offering abundant nucleation sites and thus facilitating uniform sodium nucleation. The synergistic effect between DCF and SnO 2 realizes dendrite-free sodium deposition, yielding excellent electrochemical performance, such as a low initial sodium nucleation overpotential of only 5.3 mV, minimal voltage hysteresis, and stable cycle behavior for 60 min at 1 mA cm −2 .

Tb2O3/SnO2 composite nanofibers by electrospinning for enhanced acetone sensing performance

Yu Shu,Jiang Haotian,Zhang Jie,Li Wei

Gas-sensing performance can be markedly enhanced by constructing metal-oxide semiconductor nanocomposites. In this study, Tb 2 O 3 /SnO 2 composite nanofibers with varying Tb 2 O 3 concentrations were synthesized via a straightforward electrospinning method followed by annealing. The heterostructure of Tb 2 O 3 /SnO 2 composite nanofibers was thoroughly characterized using techniques such as XRD, SEM, TEM, UV-Vis, and XPS. Gas-sensing properties were evaluated using a static gas testing system. The results demonstrate that the sensor with 1 mol% Tb exhibits excellent acetone sensing performance at 320 °C, showing a response value of 63.7–100 ppm acetone—two times higher than that of pure SnO 2 sensors. Moreover, it maintains a response level under high humidity comparable to that of pure SnO 2 under low humidity, although all sensors show a noticeable decrease in performance under elevated humidity. The sensor also exhibits good selectivity and a sub-ppm detection limit of 0.2 ppm, highlighting its potential for non-invasive diabetes monitoring through exhaled-breath analysis.

Room-temperature NO2 detection using visible light-responsive SnO2-In2O3 heterostructures

Yongrui Li,Zhaorui Zhang,Chenshuai Han,Fanjian Meng,Minghui Yang

Metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS)-based gas sensors are promising platforms for NO 2 detection, yet their high operating temperatures and sluggish response-recovery times hinder practical applications. We report a hollow SnO 2 -In 2 O 3 heterostructure prepared through a hydrothermal route, followed by milling and calcination, enabling visible-light-activated NO 2 detection at room temperature. The sensor exhibits an exceptional response of 324.67–10 ppm NO 2 with rapid response/recovery times of 21/18 s and outstanding stability over 42 days. These remarkable properties arise from an increased number of active sites, a reduced band gap, and accelerates interfacial electron transfer. The well-engineered heterostructure facilitates efficient charge separation, enabling highly sensitive and low-power NO 2 sensing at room temperature. This work provides a heterostructure-engineering strategy for developing low-power MOS-based gas sensors for environmental NO 2 monitoring.

Humidity sensor based on ZnS/SnO2 nanocomposites with improved sensing properties

Qianqian Li,Fan Li,Peng Li,Shuguo Yu

This work prepared ZnS, SnO 2 , and zinc oxide/tin dioxide (ZnS/SnO 2 ) composite materials by the hydrothermal method, and systematically studied their physicochemical properties. Humidity sensors were constructed based on these materials, and their humidity-sensing performances were tested. The characterization results show that ZnS has a cubic sphalerite structure, SnO 2 has an orthorhombic rutile structure, and the surface of ZnS/SnO 2 composites is rich in hydrophilic functional groups such as hydroxyl groups (-OH) and high-density oxygen vacancy defects. The results of the humidity-sensitive performance study showed that the ZnS/SnO 2 composites prepared under specific conditions exhibited good humidity-sensitive properties. These conditions include a molar ratio of ZnS to SnO 2 of 1:15, a reaction time of 12 h, and a reaction temperature of 200°C. The ZnS/SnO 2 humidity sensor, designed according to these optimized parameters, exhibits excellent performance at room temperature. It has an extremely high response of 2.14 × 10 6  %, a minimum hysteresis of 2.4 %, excellent linearity, and fast response and recovery times of 9.7 s and 38.6 s, respectively, over a humidity range of 11 % RH to 95 % RH. The successful fabrication of the ZnS/SnO 2 humidity sensor not only demonstrates its superior performance but also provides valuable insights into the design of high-performance sensors.

MXene/PANI/SnO2 electrochemical sensor for the determination of 4-aminophenol

Chen Jing,Xue Wenli,Shi Yaqin,Liu Wenjing,Ma Rongfang

An electrochemical sensor based on MXene/PANI/SnO 2 nanomaterials was developed for the detection of 4-aminophenol (4-AP). In situ oxidative growth of PANI on the MXene surface effectively hindered the stacking of the lamellae and increased the specific surface area of the composites. Further complexation of tin dioxide with swelling properties of the structure provided adsorption and catalytic sites for 4-AP. The prepared electrochemical sensor displayed good Linearity in the concentration range 0.50 ~ 115.38 µM and low detection limit (LOD = 0.19 µM). The sensor also had good reproducibility and stability. The MXene/PANI/SnO 2 /GCE sensor was applied to the determination of tablets and Yellow River water, and expressed high recoveries and low relative standard deviations. Graphical
