Highly selective NH3 gas sensor based on Co(OH)2/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites operating at room temperature

Bo Huang,Zhihua Zhao,Pu Chen,Baocang Zhou,Zhuo Chen,Yu Fu,Hongyu Zhu,Chen Chen,Shuaiwen Zhang,Anbiao Wang,Pu Shi,Xiaoqing Shen

Ammonia (NH3) is a common air pollutant and is a biomarker for kidney disease. Therefore, the preparation of ammonia gas sensors with high sensitivity, good selectivity and low operating temperature is of great importance for health protection. Using the in situ electrostatic self-assembly approach, a chemoresistive gas sensor based on Co(OH)2/Ti3C2Tx hybrid material was created in this study. The prepared samples were characterized by XRD, XPS, TEM, BET and other testing methods for structure, surface topography and elements. These samples were fabricated into sensors, and the gas sensing properties of the materials were investigated under different test conditions. The results show that the gas response value of the C/M-2 sensor is up to about 14.7%/100 ppm, which is three times the response value of the sensor made of pure MXene to NH3. In addition, the Co(OH)2/Ti3C2Tx hybrid sensors exhibit excellent repeatability, high sensitivity under low concentration (less than 5 ppm), fast response/recovery time (29 s/49 s) and long-time stability, which indicates their promising utility in the IoT field.

Electrostatic Self-Assembly of Ti3C2Tx MXene/Cellulose Nanofiber Composite Films for Wearable Supercapacitor and Joule Heater

Guoqiang Zhou,Xiao Wang,Ting Wan,Chaozheng Liu,Weimin Chen,Shaohua Jiang,Jingquan Han,Youguo Yan,Meichun Li,Changtong Mei

The titanium carbide nanosheets (MXene) hold great potential for fabricating high-performance electronics due to their two-dimensional layered structure, high electrical conductivity, and versatile surface chemistry. However, assembling the small MXene nanosheets into flexible macroscopic films for wearable electronics still remains a challenge. Herein, we report the hierarchical assembling of MXene nanosheets and cellulose nanofibers into high-performance composite films via an electrostatic self-assembly strategy induced by polyethyleneimine. Benefited from the nacre-like microstructure of MXene “bricks” and cellulose nanofibers “mortars” interlocked by polyethyleneimine via hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction, composite films possess integrated superior flexibility, high tensile strength, and stable electrical conductivity, which are advantageous for wearable electronic applications. To provide a proof-of-concept design, a symmetric quasi-solid-state supercapacitor with the as-prepared composite film as electrode is fabricated, which exhibits a specific capacitance of 93.9 mF cm −2 at a current density of 0.1 mA cm −2 and almost constant capacitive behavior under different bending states. In addition, the composite film possesses capacities of electrothermal conversion and complete degradation in a hydrogen peroxide solution. These results demonstrate that the electrostatically self-assembled composite films hold great promise in the development of highly flexible, mechanically robust, and environmentally friendly energy storage and conversion devices.

Ni-MOF/Ti3C2Tx derived multidimensional hierarchical Ni/TiO2/C nanocomposites with lightweight and efficient microwave absorption

Meng Wang,Panpan Zhou,Tong Feng,Zhi Song,Qingguo Ren,Huidong Gu,Xueqing Shi,Qitu Zhang,Lixi Wang

Benefiting from its large specific surface area, abundant defects and functional groups, two-dimensional (2D) laminated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene is a kind of electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorber with great potential. However, the impedance mismatch caused by the excessive conductivity, inappropriate permittivity and lack of magnetic loss seriously hinders the application of MXene to EMW absorption. Herein, multidimensional hierarchical Ni/TiO 2 /C nanocomposites composed of three-dimensional (3D) hydrangea-like Ni/C microspheres and well-arranged 2D carbon sheets embedded with TiO 2 nanoparticles were successfully fabricated from a Ni-based trimellitic acid framework (Ni-BTC) and Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene via facile in-situ solvothermal assembly and annealing processes. As expected, excellent EMW absorption properties were obtained only by changing the annealing temperature. The minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) value of -45.6 dB and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 3.40 GHz (14.6–18.0 GHz) with a layer thickness of only 1.5 mm is obtained by annealing the sample at 700 °C. The outstanding ternary multilayer structure and the optimization of magnetoelectric synergy in impedance matching jointly create its remarkable EMW absorption performance. This work is expected to provide a simple and effective method to design MXene-based EMW absorbing materials possessing high absorption intensity, light weight, wide EAB and thin thickness.

C60 intercalating Ti3C2Tx MXenes assisted by γ-cyclodextrin for electromagnetic interference shielding films with high stability

Kunpeng Qian,Shuang Li,Jianhui Fang,Yuhuan Yang,Shaomei Cao,Miao Miao,Xin Feng

Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes with excellent metallic conductivity and flexibility have shown a promising prospect as electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. Ultrathin, hierarchical hybrid films were fabricated by using C 60 intercalating Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes with the assistance of water-soluble γ -cyclodextrin (CD). The C 60 /CD complex was obtained by high-speed vibration milling using hydrophilic CD as dispersing agent. After thermal annealing treatment, the obtained hybrid film exhibited excellent EMI shielding (53.52±0.43 dB), hydrophobicity (water contact angle: 93.7°) and mechanical stability (over 0.9 million bending times). Taking advantage of the antioxidant of C 60 , the chemical durability of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes based hybrid films was also improved as expected. These results indicate that the well-designed hierarchical hybrid films with the intercalation of C 60 have promising potential for high-performance EMI shielding applications.

Bo Kong,Xiang Yang,Huiqian Dai,Yu Wu,Hong-Bing Lu,Wei Liu,Xiaoying Liu

In this work, an electrochemical sensor was developed based on the delaminated titanium carbide nanosheet (d-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) and fullerene (C 60 ) composite modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The composite materials d-Ti 3 C 2 T x /C 60 were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The prepared modified electrode (d-Ti 3 C 2 T x /C 60 /GCE) exhibited commendable electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of baicalein. Under the optimum detection conditions, the detection of baicalin showed a wide linear range of 0.015–4.0 μM with a detection limit of 0.005 μM. In addition, the d-Ti 3 C 2 T x /C 60 /GCE showed good reproducibility, stability and anti-interference. It was also successfully used for the determination of baicalin in the commercially available Shuanghuanglian oral liquid with satisfactory results.

Mechanically robust Ti3C2Tx MXene/Carbon fiber fabric/Thermoplastic polyurethane composite for efficient electromagnetic interference shielding applications

Ningmin Duan,Zhenyu Shi,Zhaohui Wang,Bin Zou,Chengpeng Zhang,Jilai Wang,Jianren Xi,Xiaoshuai Zhang,Xianzhi Zhang,Guilong Wang

It is a challenge to design Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene-based electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding composites with excellent mechanical properties. Herein, a highly robust, flexible and durable Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/carbon fiber fabric/thermoplastic polyurethanes (Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/CFf/TPU) composite was fabricated through simple electrohydrodynamic atomization deposition, layer-by-layer stacking and hot pressing technology. The synergistic strengthening effect of van der Waals forces and covalent bonds can improve the tensile strength of the composite up to170.2 MPa, which is far greater than that of other MXene-based composites previously reported. In addition, the EMI shielding performance of the Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/CFf/TPU composite also improved with increasing MXene mass fraction, reaching 40.4 dB, which can be attributed to the dielectric loss provided by conductive fillers and the enhanced absorption within the sandwich structure. More interestingly, the composite retained excellent resistance stability, EMI-SE stability and flexibility, even after multiple bending and releasing cycles. This work provides a facile and environmentally-friendly method for preparing composites with excellent EMI shielding properties and mechanical properties, which may provide more possibilities for applications in intelligent wear and electronic wireless communication equipment.

Porous polypyrrole/Ti3C2Tx/alginate aerogels prepared by sacrificial template strategy as electrode materials in symmetric supercapacitors

Xingyue Wu,Junyao Li,Yifang Zhu,Wenrong Cai,Juan Xu,Yong Qin,Yong Kong

Light weight and porous polypyrrole (PPy)/Ti 3 C 2 T x /alginate (Alg) aerogels were prepared via a sacrificial template strategy, which were used as the electrode material in symmetric supercapacitors . PPy and Ti 3 C 2 T x endow the aerogels with high specific capacitance, and the porous structure is in favor of the transfer of electrons and electrolyte ions . The aerogels display high energy density (64 μWh cm −2 ) and power density (0.97 μW cm −2 ) when used in symmetric supercapacitors. In addition, the aerogels also display high cyclic stability owing to the inhibited volume change of PPy during the repeated charge/discharge process.

Antimicrobial and Mechanical Properties of Ag@Ti3C2Tx-Modified PVA Composite Hydrogels Enhanced with Quaternary Ammonium Chitosan

Linxinzheng Guo,Kun Hu,Haibo Wang

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a polymeric material with good biocompatibility, excellent hydrophilicity, and a large number of hydroxyl groups. However, due to its insufficient mechanical properties and poor inhibition of bacteria, it has a lack of applications in wound dressings, stent materials, and other fields. In this study, a simple method was used to prepare composite gel materials: Ag@MXene-HACC-PVA hydrogels with a double-network structure were prepared using an acetal reaction. Due to the double cross-linked interaction, the hydrogel has good mechanical properties and is resistant to swelling. The adhesion and bacterial inhibition were enhanced due to the addition of HACC. In addition, the strain sensing properties of this conductive hydrogel were stable, and the GF (specification factor) was 1.7617 at 40–90% strain. Therefore, the dual-network hydrogel with excellent sensing properties, adhesion properties, antibacterial properties, and cytocompatibility has potential applications in biomedical materials, especially as a tissue engineering repair material.

Ultralight, Conductive Ti3C2Tx MXene/PEDOT:PSS Hybrid Aerogels for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Dominated by the Absorption Mechanism

Guo-Yu Yang,Shao-Zhe Wang,Hong-Tai Sun,Xu-Ming Yao,Chuan-Bing Li,Yu-Jun Li,Jian-Jun Jiang

MXene aerogels with a porous microstructure are a promising electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material due to its low density and excellent electrical conductivity, which has attracted widespread attention. Compared with traditional EMI shielding materials that rely on reflection as the primary mechanism, MXene aerogels with absorption as the dominant mechanism have greater potential for development as a novel EMI shielding material because of its ability to reduce environmental contamination from reflected electromagnetic (EM) waves from materials. In this study, a novel Ti3C2Tx MXene/PEDOT:PSS hybrid aerogel was presented by freeze-drying and thermal annealing using few-layered Ti3C2Tx MXene and the conductive polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). PEDOT:PSS not only improved the gelling ability of Ti3C2Tx but also successfully established a conductive bridge between MXene nanosheets. The experimental results demonstrated that the hybrid aerogel exhibited an obvious porous microstructure, which was beneficial for the multiple scattering of EM waves within the materials. The EMI shielding effectiveness and specific shielding effectiveness reached up to 59 dB and 10,841 dB·cm2·g–1, respectively, while the SER/SET ratio value was only 0.05, indicating superior wave absorption performance. Furthermore, the good impedance matching, due to the electrical conductance loss and polarization loss effect of the composites, plays a critical role in their excellent wave absorption and EMI shielding performance. Therefore, this work provides a practical approach for designing and fabricating lightweight absorption-dominated EMI shielding materials.

Carbon Dots@Ti3C2Tx-MXene 0D/2D Hybrid Composites toward High-Performance Lubricating Additives under Varying Temperatures

Junhai Wang,Yu Kan,Tingting Yan,Wenfeng Liang,Lixiu Zhang,Xinran Li,Siyang Gao

Progress in nanolubricant additive is crucial to pursuit of energy saving and sustainable development. For enhancing lubrication efficiency of pentaerythritol ester (PETE) oil, we synthesized zero-dimensional/two-dimensional (0D/2D) carbon dots(CD)@Ti3C2Tx-MXene hybrid composites using a facial hydrothermal method, which gave full play to interlayer shear mechanism of Ti3C2Tx-MXene, repair effect of carbon dots and their potential synergy. The composites were added to PETE as lubricating additives, during which ultrasonic treatment was employed to enhance the dispersion stability. The frictional tests confirmed that the addition of CD@Ti3C2Tx resulted in significant reductions in friction and wear across varying temperatures owing to the ultrasmall size, interlayer sliding, and synergistic effect. The optimal concentration of 0.1 wt % of CD@Ti3C2Tx reduced friction coefficients and wear volumes of PETE by 54.5% and 57.6% at 25 °C, 53.3% and 54.3% at 100 °C, and 40.0% and 45.9% at 200 °C, respectively. A tribofilm induced by complex tribochemical reactions, mainly consisting of carbon dots, Ti3C2Tx, metal oxides, carbides, and nitrides, was generated at the contact interface, which significantly alleviated direct contact between the rubbing pair. This study explores the potential of CD@Ti3C2Tx for development of advanced lubricating materials and is expected to contribute to wider adoption of MXene-based materials in the field of tribology.

Ultrathin and flexible polyimide/Ti3C2TX MXene composite films for electromagnetic interference shielding with harsh environment tolerance

Binzhe Tan,Dongya Guo,Zhirong Tao,Zhibo Chen,Zhijian Lv,Guozhang Wu,Yu Lin

Two-dimensional MXene materials show great potential for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding application because of their superior electrical conductivity. However, the susceptibility to oxidation and the mechanical brittleness of MXenes greatly limit their extensive application. Herein, an ultrathin flexible polyimide (PI)/Ti3C2TX composite film with a nacre-like lamellar structure is successfully prepared using a simple vacuum filtration and thermal imidization process. Owing to the addition of PI, the composite film exhibits excellent mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 114.9 MPa and a fracture strain of 3.0%. Moreover, the nacre-like lamellar structure is conducive to multiple internal reflections, giving rise to the absorption of electromagnetic waves. The PI/Ti3C2TX composite film exhibits an outstanding EMI shielding effectiveness of 37 dB in the X-band range with an ultrathin thickness of only 15 μm. Furthermore, PI serves as an antioxidation coating, and its EMI shielding performance is maintained even when the composite film is exposed to various harsh environments. Therefore, the resulting composite film exhibits excellent EMI shielding stability and durability, which enables the potential application of high-performance EMI shielding materials against harsh environments.

PEDOT-embellished Ti3C2Tx nanosheet supported Pt–Pd bimetallic nanoparticles as efficient and stable methanol oxidation electrocatalysts

Shuyue Xie,Fangfei Liu,Tursun Abdiryim,Xiong Liu,Ruxangul Jamal,Yanyan Song,Mariyam Niyaz,Yajun Liu,Hujun Zhang,Xinsheng Tang

Exploiting high-efficiency and durable electrocatalysts toward the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) is crucial for the advancement of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Herein, we demonstrate the loading of platinum–palladium bimetallic nanoparticles (Pt–Pd NPs) onto poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-embellished titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) nanosheets as the electrocatalyst (Ti3C2Tx/PEDOT/Pt–Pd) via a facile and rapid chemical reduction-assisted one-pot hydrothermal process. The structural and morphological analyses of Ti3C2Tx/PEDOT/Pt–Pd indicate that the three-dimensional (3D) hybrid structure formed between PEDOT and Ti3C2Tx provides a sizable active surface and more active sites, which enhances the homogeneous dispersion of the Pt–Pd NPs and facilitates mass transfer. The Schottky junctions formed between PEDOT and Pt–Pd NPs contribute to charge transfer. The electronic effects and synergistic interactions between the support and catalyst favor the electrocatalytic activity of the catalyst. The electrochemical test results reveal that the Ti3C2Tx/PEDOT/Pt–Pd catalyst has prominent electrocatalytic capability for the MOR. Compared with Ti3C2Tx/Pt–Pd and commercial Pt/C catalysts, the Ti3C2Tx/PEDOT/Pt–Pd catalyst has a larger electrochemical activity surface area (ECSA = 122 m2 g−1) and higher mass activity (MA = 1445.4 mA mg−1), as well as better CO tolerance and more reliable long-term durability (a peak current density retention of 71% after 5200 s).
